-I don't know what's going on but I think a modern day Van Helsing
rides my train in the morning. This dude parks his SUV at my train
station and *every* day, regardless of the weather, he wears a long
trench coat, cargo pants with a ton of (full) pockets, and a
mountaineer-worthy backpack/harness thingy that's loaded with gear.
All this to ride a commuter train into Chicago? I don't even want to

-Lillian Axe Roar Back On Metro City Records Label With A New Album,
WATERS RISING, For June 19th, 2007

Opening for the likes of Ratt, Poison, Queensryche, Krokus, Stryper
and Lita Ford, working with some of rock's most respected producers
and scoring several "Headbanger's Ball" approved video clips, Lillian
Axe certainly carved (or perhaps more appropriately, chopped) a niche
for themselves with metalheads worldwide during the '80s and '90s. And
now, after an extended hiatus, the group -- which is now comprised of
Derrick LeFevre (lead vocals), Steve Blaze (lead guitars/vocals), Sam
Poitevent (guitars/vocals), Eric Morris (bass), and Ken Koudelka
(drums) -- has unleashed their first new studio album in nearly
fifteen years (and first for the Metro City Records label), titled
WATERS RISING.

"We have spent the last three years getting this record done, in four
different locations, and we have gone through a complete metamorphosis
mentally and physically," explains Blaze. "It's a different
environment in the music industry these days yet the spirit and soul
in creating music has stayed the same in the Lillian Axe camp. My
engineer, Rob Hovey, and I spent many hours experimenting with
different approaches to this record, but it always came back to the
same formula: do what we do, period."

Blaze also offered some insight regarding several favorite individual
tracks from WATERS RISING. "The song 'Quarantine' deals with
germaphobia -- I suffer from this condition. I deal sometimes with the
'dirtiness' of the world by living in a very clean, pristine, and
organized environment. 'The 2nd Of May' speaks of child disappearance
and the theories behind the inability to find so many missing people.
'Fields Of Yesterday' would be Lillian Axe's 'Stairway To Heaven' or
'Bohemian Rhapsody.' The one song that encompasses the pieces
sonically and emotionally that are the quintessential elements of that
group. It is about eight minutes long and has a mid-section which
capsulates the history of man's existence in an ethereal interlude
which soars and then slams back to reality. '5' is an instrumental in
which I used about 80 guitar tracks. I attempted to touch on many
different aspects of the instrument from arpeggios to clean picking to
orchestration to heavy blues riffs to speed riffing to manipulation
feedback. It took a while, as I wrote it as we recorded it, but the
fanatic end result was just what I intended."

Originally formed in 1983, the New Orleans-based group soon caught the
attention of Ratt manager Marshall Berle and MCA Records, leading to
the release of the group's self-titled 1988 release (produced by late
Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby), 1989's LOVE + WAR (produced by Tony
Platt, who previously worked with AC/DC), 1991's OUT OF THE DARKNESS
INTO THE LIGHT, 1992's POETIC JUSTICE, and 1993's PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA
(the last two of which were produced by Leif Mases, who previously
worked with Led Zeppelin). Additionally, such Lillian Axe tracks as
"Dream Of A Lifetime," "Show A Little Love," "True Believer," and a
cover of Badfinger's "No Matter What" received attention from rock
radio and MTV.

By the middle of the '90s, Lillian Axe opted to take a break, although
a collection of previously unreleased material was issued in 1999,
FIELDS OF YESTERDAY. With metal once more ruling the charts and the
airwaves by the early 21st century, Lillian Axe was back in business
with live shows, resulting in the release of their first-ever live
album, LIVE 2002, recorded in Houston, Texas. Roadwork has continued
for the band -- including playing to 27,000 fans at Germany's Bang
Your Head!!! Festival in 2004, as well as an extensive European tour a
year later. With new singer LeFevre recently replacing longtime
frontman Ron Taylor, WATERS RISING sees a whole new metallic chapter
unfolding for Lillian Axe.

"This album has been conceptually in the works for years. WATERS
RISING represents the boiling point factor, that life seems to be a
tumultuous ride always on the brink of explosion. These recent times
on this planet seem to be proving this point. However, in each
individual is the point where you reconcile this within your spirit
and peace takes over allowing you to cope more effectively. The songs
on this record cover the different ways that we deal with this factor
and the fact that everyone is trying to make sense of it."

Track listing for WATERS RISING:

1. Waters Rising
2. Antarctica
3. Become A Monster
4. Quarantine
5. I Have To Die, Goodbye
6. Fear Of Time
7. Until The End Of The World
8. Fields Of Yesterday
9. Thirst
10. The 2nd Of May
11. Deep In The Black
12. 5

-K.K. Downing Opens The Steel Mill

Judas Priest legend K.K. Downing has launched his personal Web site:
http://www.kkdowning.net/

The site is titled the Steel Mill, and is intended to be a forum for
all things Downing, Judas Priest and Metal Music! It's the first place
to go to get all the information about K.K. Downing, as well as
finding out about all of K.K.'s side projects. There are also great
forums where you can discuss any of your metal issues, and get the
lowdown on the best new (and classic) metal albums.

K.K. has just been in the press, talking about his recent project
Violent Storm, which he executive produced and played on. He has also
been very busy in the studio with Priest, recording their new album,
which is a concept album, based on the predictions of Nostradamus. It
is due to be released in the latter half of 2007, and will be
doubtless followed by a massive world tour.

K.K. had this to say about the Steel Mill:

"Hi metal fans

"I am proud to present my new [site] which is uniquely international
and able to give music fans worldwide the opportunity to interact and
participate

"Lots of things will be happening at the steel mill, you will be
meeting friends of mine, and get to communicate with other metal fans
all over the world

"I will be reviewing new and not so new records, live gigs and having
interviews with interesting people

"The mill workers will be working hard but we [need] your input to
keep the flames in the forge as hot as possible.

"Keep feeding the flames

"K.K. Downing"

-Are They Punk? Are They Comedy? They're The Rezidudes! And....
WELCOME TO THE SUCK On April 1st

What's wrong with having a little bit of fun with rock n' roll? The
Rezidudes are certainly unhappy with the current over-serious state of
rock n' roll and this Manchvegas, New Hampshire-based quintet are
ready to do something about it with their April 1st (yep, April Fool's
Day) release for Screaming Ferret Wrecords, WELCOME TO THE SUCK.

Think South Cali pop punk (Me First And The Gimme Gimme's, Avail, No
Use For A Name, etc.) with heavy metal guitars, and you're not far off
from the Rezidudes' musical forte. But instead of specializing in
original compositions, the quintet takes well-known songs from the
'50s through the '80s and transforms them into metal/punk party
anthems -- including Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer," John Denver's
"Country Roads" and even the "Theme From 'Cheers,'" among others.

Comprised of Shannon Verfaillie (vocals), Meliah Rage's Jim Koury
(guitar), Kevin Cornish (guitar), Jimbo Ormiston (bass), and Andre
Dube (drums), The Rezidudes are (according to Cornish) "...a group of
life long friends who enjoy getting together once a week to live out
our mid-life crisis, rock and roll fantasies and have a good time. In
a nut shell, we get a kick out of taking tired old mellow songs that
everybody knows and giving them a swift kick in the ass. Picture the
evil offspring of Carly Simon and Joey Ramone if you would."

WELCOME TO THE SUCK was recorded at Screaming Ferret Studios in
Manchester, New Hampshire by label head Tim Koukos, and mastered by
Grammy Award Winner Doc Wiley at Sonic Nerve Studio in Miami Beach,
Florida.

"This had to be one of, if not the most, fun sessions I've ever
recorded and co-produced," admits Koukos. "The hardest part was trying
to stop laughing while we were tracking so we could actually finish
the recordings! Very fond memories from this one that I'll truly
cherish for the rest of my life."

Track listing for WELCOME TO THE SUCK:

1. Sunshine
2. Boxer
3. Help
4. California Dreamin'
5. Tainted Love
6. Come Dancing
7. Country Road
8. Theme From "Cheers"
9. Jenny
10. Brown Eyed Girl
11. Alchohol
12. Leavin' On A Jet Plane
13. Paint It Black
14. Blowin' In The Wind
15. Fire And Rain
16. Statie Blues
17. Jimbo
18. Mother's Little Helper

-Glenn Hughes And Chad Smith To Perform Together At L.A.'s Whisky A Go
Go

TRENTON, N.J. -- Glenn Hughes has been confirmed to play an exclusive
headline performance along with drummer Chad Smith at Los Angeles'
Whisky A Go Go on Saturday, June 2.

This will be Hughes' first American performance since the release of
his debut Demolition Records album, MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE, on which he
worked closely with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Smith.

The Whisky is the venue where Hughes and his former band Trapeze first
made a serious impact in the early '70s in America, so it is a fitting
venue for Hughes to perform new music from this phase of his storied
career.

"The Whisky was the club that was responsible for my breaking the U.S.
market in the early '70s," Hughes said. "I played there a half a dozen
times between '70 and '73. This is the venue where members of Deep
Purple would show up to check out my band Trapeze. I have great
memories of this legendary club. After playing there I knew I would
become a Los Angelean, and would never live in England again. It feels
like I'm comin' home with my wife, the amazing Chad Smith. It's gonna
be funky."

Dubbed "the voice of rock" for his rich, soulful singing, Hughes has
explored many musical paths and worked with some of the greatest
musicians in the business. Smith, Hughes' partner in crime in recent
years, acted as a sounding board for Hughes' demos before the
musicians came together with longtime guitarist JJ Marsh to flesh out
the tracks for MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE. The trio, along with help from
Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and Mark Kilian on keys and
string arrangements, recorded MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE live at Smith's
Hollywood Hills home.

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are now on sale via Ticketmaster
outlets. The Whisky A Go Go is located at 8901 Sunset Boulevard in
West Hollywood, Calif.

-Byzantine Offers In-studio Update, Touring Plans

West Virginia's forward-thinking thrashers Byzantine are currently in
the studio finishing recording for the band's upcoming full-length,
OBLIVION BECKONS. Mixing will take place at Highview Studios by Drew
Mazurek and the album will be mastered by Alan Douches at West West
Side Music and the album will see a late summer release.

"The record is coming along really well," commented bassist Skip
Cromer. "The sound is really good, we tried some redneck experiments
to get some slamming tones and they ended up working. The majority of
the songs definitely fall into the trash vein of things."

Byzantine recently took a short break from recording with producer
Charles A. Fisher in Sissonville, WV to join up with God Forbid,
Arsis, Goatwhore and Mnemic for a brief trek throughout the eastern
U.S. The band is currently scheduling summer touring plans, including
an appearance at Milwaukee Metalfest, Columbus' Independence Fest and
Uprising Fest 2007 in Connecticut as well regional headlining shows.

Byzantine's forthcoming DVD, SALVATION, is also now available for pre-
order at

. The effort will feature a six-song live set -- including the
exclusive "Cradle Song," which will not appear on the forthcoming

-Gojira Front Man Talks About The Band, Current Tour, North American
Success -- Video Available

Pure Grain Audio ( http://www.puregrainaudio.com/gallery/gallery.htm )
now has a video interview online with French death metallers Gojira,
from the band's recent stop in Guelph, Ontario in Canada while on tour
with Lamb Of God, Trivium and Machine Head. The interview is in-depth,
covering several subjects including the band's beginnings, touring
North America for the second time and the band's recent success. There
are a few excerpts available here.

On touring North America as an opening act:
"We have a very strong fan base of dedicated fans, it's amazing,"
front man Joe Duplantier said. "They write us letters, they come to
the show. Some of them have seen us 20 times or me and in France,
we're kind of an established band now. When we tour in France we are
headliners. We have a big crowd for us, it's even harder to be a
headliner like that with dedicated fans, because you have to give the
best all the time [rather than] being the opening act. Actually, it's
very refreshing to be on this tour playing 30 minutes and being like,
'We have to go in and warm up the place and then go in the bus.'"

On Gojira's atypical lyrical content:
"It's just spontaneous, like the music," Duplantier said of the band's
lyrical direction. "It just goes together. And to me, sometimes people
tell me, 'Why do you have a peaceful message and you play metal? It's
so violent, it's so dark, it's so nasty.' I want to say, 'No, actually
it's not paradoxical at all.' On Earth, we have a problem, we are on
the ship and it's sinking and we have to do something about it. So
there's an emergency... I feel like it's natural, it's spontaneous to
scream. But that's not the only point for the message. I would say the
message is more like take care of yourself if you want to take care of
your world and the ship. Learn how to respect yourself and know better
-- if you want to know the world and respect the world."

Gojira is continuing to support the band's first proper North American
release, FROM MARS TO SIRIUS, which saw an August 2006 release through
Prosthetic Records, after being available in only Europe through
Listenable Records in September 2005. The video for the song "To
Sirius" will be played again this weekend on MTV2's "Headbanger's
Ball" -- check local listings for time and channel. The video can also
be seen on-line at http://youtube.com/watch?v=k2rLuTJzaKQ .

-Yakuza Offers Another Update On Forthcoming Record

Chicago's Yakuza has posted another update on-line regarding progress
on the forthcoming album TRANSMUTATIONS at
http://www.prostheticrecords.com/yakuza-instudio.html , featuring
commentary and in-studio photos.

"The tracking and mix is complete," front man Bruce Lamont said of the
album's progress. "We had jazz percussionists Michael Zerang and Hamid
Drake come in for a few songs, it was a serious f*cking honor. Man, I
can't even begin to tell you how happy we are with the results. The
songs are varied as always, this will never change... I will have to
say, the label is gonna have a good time trying to market this one!
Sanford [Parker, producer] brought the sonic continuity we have been
striving for since day one. I'm really proud of the dudes for steppin'
up."

"We've also got some video coming up soon," Lamont added. "It's our
version of [Metallica documentary] 'Some Kind Of Monster' Awh sh*t!"

Yakuza began demoing new material on February 28 at Semifour Studios
in the band's hometown. TRANSMUTATIONS is being produced by Sanford
Parker (Pelican, Minsk, Rwake), who made a guest appearance on the
band's last release, SAMSARA. A fall 2007 release through Prosthetic
Records is expected. The band will continue previewing new material
live April 8 with Genghis Tron and label mates Kylesa as well as
supporting Goatwhore on April 20.

-All That Remains Front Man Offers Update Before Band Leaves For
Europe

After the band's recent successful first headlining tour throughout
North America, Massachusetts' All That Remains is now gearing up for a
headlining run across the Atlantic, ready to tear through Europe with
support from Misery Signals, Textures and Eternal Lord (U.K. dates
only). Upon completion, All That Remains will return to the U.S. for
dates with Bullet For My Valentine before returning to Europe for
Wacken: Open Air 2007 in Germany.

"I'm starting to get my mind ready for another flight to Europe,"
front man Phil Labonte said. "I hate flying. We carry guitars,
wireless crap, cymbals, pedals, our luggage, computers, and all kinds
of other stuff. BUT, once we get there and get situated it's gonna be
sweet! Our first headliner in the U.S. was amazing and I was worried
about that, so we'll see how this one goes. If the U.S. is any
indicator: it's gonna rule. If you're planning on going to the London
show: Get tickets soon. It's gonna sell out."

All That Remains is also deep into production of the band's debut DVD.
Labonte comments on that as well: "High Roller sent us some stuff and
it looks AMAZING! Larry (KrazyLarry) and Mario (Onabur) from our
message board are both on the DVD. Mario is only kinda on the DVD, I
guess you would say. His valentine to Jeanne [Sagan, bass] is there.
Ray from Full Blown Chaos is on it and is awesome! I can't wait until
we get this thing together for you guys. I think we'll see more stuff
once we get back from Europe, so I'll give you another update then."

"We were screwing around with some new music this week at practice,"
he continues. "We are starting to get into the notion of writing. We
are planning on having some time this summer off, so we're gonna start
writing some stuff. Jason [Costa, drummer] is bringing a very creative
mindset. Good stuff."

All That Remains continues to support the band's latest release, THE
FALL OF IDEALS, which saw a summer 2006 release and led to stints on
Sounds Of The Underground 2006 in Europe, Ozzfest 2006, and tours with
DragonForce, Killswitch Engage, a headlining tour and the forthcoming
European headlining tour.

*** FROM THE MEGA-VAULT ***
*
by Keith Abt (KeithAbt@...)

-This Week: PLAYIN' CATCH UP...

(I'm still trying to get caught up on all the backlogged stuff in my
"To Be Reviewed" pile...so without further ado, let's get to the
tunes...)

...The new CD by Spider Rockets, EVER AFTER (P-Dog Records) arrived in
my mailbox out of the blue some time ago. Since the band hails from
New Jersey, I thought that perhaps they'd picked me to receive it
since I am a fellow Garden State resident. Tim later told me that my
place of residence had nothing to do with it, because the rest of the
Detritus staff had also received the CD...so much for feeling special,
eh? (By the way, the mere fact that none of THEM have bothered to
review it all these months later should tell you something...!) I
don't really know where to begin reviewing EVER AFTER because to be
honest, I thought it was god-awful. Hardly what I would call "Detritus
material," Spider Rockets is a hard-edged alterna-rock band that
features the squeaky voiced Helena Cos (who sounds like a pissed off
Gwen Stefani) warbling over ten tracks of some of the most watery,
generic tunes I've heard in ages. Spider Rockets' Web site compares
their sound and attitude to Velvet Revolver, 7 Year Bitch, Audioslave,
and Alanis Morrisette (!), but none of those artists are exactly my
bag (what can I say, I'm just a dumb metal head!), so for me it was a
chore to simply get through one spin of the CD. By the time the disc
was done the only track that stuck in my head was the cover of the
Beatles' "Helter Skelter," and even that was only because I was
imagining how cool it would be if John Lennon and George Harrison rose
from their graves to exact terrible vengeance upon the band members
for defiling their classic song. Anyone want a free drink coaster, or
a skeet-shooting target? I'll be glad to send you my copy of EVER
AFTER just to get it out of my house. Sorry, Spider Rockets, I'm sure
you're nice people and all, but my New Jersey loyalty only goes so
far... If this sounds like it's your bag at all, feel free to peruse
http://www.SpiderRockets.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/SpiderRockets
, but don't bother to tell them that I sent you. :J

...Moving on to (thankfully) more metallic pastures... Obtaining a
copy of LAW AND PERSECUTION by Italian thrashers Nameless Crime
(Powerzone Records) was a more high-tech process than I'm used to.
Instead of simply receiving a promotional CD in the mail, I was e-
mailed a link and a password to a special area on their record
label's
Web site, which allowed me to download the entire album in MP3
format.
This was a first for me, and I found the whole thing somewhat ironic
considering that the music business is usually trying to DETER people
from downloading tunes! Anyway, I've discovered several cool new
bands
from Italy over the past year (like Merendine Atomiche and Eldritch)
thanks to my Detritus reviewing duties, and Nameless Crime is another
winner. During the first spin of LAW AND PERSECUTION it became
obvious
that these boys must be big Dave Mustaine fans, as the album sounds a
lot like COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION-era Megadeth. The guitar team of
Mario Ruggiero and Alessandra Tuccillo especially impressed me; these
guys can definitely lay down some seriously shredding old-school
riffs
and keep it tight too. Fabio Manda's vocals took a little getting
used
to (his Italian accent was a little distracting for me at first), and
the band's lack of English expertise also provided some unintentional
comedy. (I'm still trying to understand what the song title "Roadside
Bison" could possibly mean, and lyrics like "With your warnings I
clean my ass, my life is not for sale!" in the track "Mr. Stone"
raised a quizzical eyebrow too!), but other than those minor
complaints I'd say that Nameless Crime can be added to my list of
cool
Italian bands to keep an eye on in the future. The band's Web site,
http://www.namelesscrime.com/ , appears to be under construction at
the moment, but you can find out more info at their label's homepage,
which is http://www.powerzonerecords.com/ ...

...Continuing on the true metal tip we have GRIMOIRE OF RUIN
(Darkhaven Records) by Shadow Demon, a lavishly packaged indie release
by a troop of headbangers who call the wilds of Washington State home.
There's an interesting mix of NWOBHM riffage, doom metal imagery, and
Iced Earth-style grandiosity happening on GRIMOIRE OF RUIN, though
some tracks tend to drag on a bit (only one song comes in under the
five-minute mark) and overstay their welcome. I have a feeling that
vocalist Blaine Hammond is going to be the make-or-break member of
Shadow Demon for most first time listeners, as his voice is a strange
cocktail mix of James Hetfield's youthful snarl and Hansi Kursch's
oddball pompous delivery. I couldn't stand his voice when I first
listened to the CD but he's slowly grown on me over time. I have no
complaints about the rest of the band; they're competent and do their
jobs well, but overall Shadow Demon seem to be missing that special
"something" that pushes them over the cliff for me from being a band
that's merely "cool" to a band that I'm crazy about. Maybe they're
trying to be a little too "epic" for their own good at this early
stage in their career, maybe it's a feeling that they should've spent
a little less money on the amazingly cool artwork and calligraphy in
the booklet and poured that cash into the rather dry studio production
job. Whatever the case, GRIMOIRE OF RUIN is a decent first attempt by
a band that definitely has its you-know-what together and is simply in
need of a label deal that will hook them up with a killer producer. As
they stand right now, fans of the grimy U.S. "true underground metal"
bands like October 31st or Skullview will probably be happy to give
'em a shot in their CD players. Check 'em out at
http://www.shadowdemon.us/ or http://www.darkhavenrecords.com/ .

...What do you get when you combine former members of Quiet Riot,
Rainbow, Bonham, Lynch Mob and Dio? The right answer would be 3 Legged
Dogg, a new band featuring guitarist Carlos Cavazo, bassist Jimmy
Bain, drummer Vinny Appice, and vocalist Chas West, though personally
my reply would be "Ehhh...not much." Their FROZEN SUMMER debut (Perris
Records) sounded decent enough while it was playing, but it
unfortunately didn't leave much of an impression after it was over.
Going by the cast of musicians I was expecting a retro '80s hard rock
fest, but FROZEN SUMMER is a decidedly modern rock CD, having more in
common with Nickelback, Godsmack, or 3 Doors Down than with any of the
members' former projects. The guitars are low-tuned and grungy, the
songs are melancholy, and Chas West delivers the lyrics in a slow
drawl that gets a little monotonous by the CD's halfway point. Even
though I'm obviously not a modern rock guy, I will say that this disc
is very well done. If these boys were signed to a bigger label and got
some radio play they might see some success with this disc, but it's
simply not my style. You can always check out
http://www.3leggeddogg.com/ or http://www.myspace.com/3leggeddogg to
decide if it's yours.

-Wow! The "To Be Reviewed" pile has at last been cut down to size...
Again, I apologize to the bands, the labels, and the P.R. people who
were nice enough to send this stuff to me during the last quarter of
2006, only to have me sit on it all for a couple of months... Tim has
just sent me a package of fresh promos in the past week, and I promise
y'all that reviews of all of those will be more timely! Till next
time, keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold, as old
what's his name used to say... ;)

-THIS WEEK'S PLAYLIST: Intense – AS OUR ARMY GROWS; Saviour Machine –

Python – GOOD AND EVIL.

*** REALM OF SHRED ***
*
by Neal Woodall (MysticX9@...)

-Well I have once again neglected the Realm for too long; my
intentions were good but life got in the way. In any case, a few items
worth addressing...

...First of all, let me make a correction to the review I wrote of Ray
DeTone's GUITAR NOIR CD. I incorrectly stated that there was a drum
machine used on the album; Ray assured me that indeed there was no
drum machine used, as a matter of fact Ray utilized the services of
some very well respected drummers and percussionists on GUITAR NOIR.
More information and samples can be found at http://www.raydetone.com/
and http://www.myspace.com/raydetone .

...There are some nice short interviews with several shred artists
such as Vinnie Moore, Rusty Cooley and Preshant Aswani over at
InstruMentalCase. Check 'em out:

...I see Michael Schenker is once again planning a U.S. tour. I would
like to get very excited about this but I'm a bit anxious based on his
reputation for canceling shows, sometimes at the last minute!
Hopefully he has it all together this time around, as I would gladly
take a road trip to catch him in action, it's been a long time since
I've seen the master live. Fingers crossed...
http://www.michaelschenkerhimself.com

...So I guess MySpace is now passe with the youngsters? I knew it was
just a matter of time, maybe that will reduce the amount of nonsense
on there and the site can be used more as a marketing tool for bands
and other entertainers. As a matter of fact I just heard some
promising songs from Lance King's new band Krucible on there, see what
you think at http://www.myspace.com/krucible .

...One of our readers, Mark Vincent, recently turned me on to a cool
band -- Aghora from Miami, Florida. Killer progressive metal with a
unique twist, give 'em a listen at http://www.aghora.org/ . Thanks
Mark!

...Gary Moore fan site "Lord Of The Strings" reports that Gary's new
album will be called CLOSE AS YOU GET and will again be in the blues
style, so unfortunately for us hard rockers it will not be the Irish
flavored rock album rumored to be in the works. As far as I know,
there are no current plans to record such an album but I'll keep you
posted if I hear anything. You can also subscribe to the "Lord Of The
Strings" newsletter at http://www.garymoorefc.com/ .

...Well ProgPower USA VIII tickets are officially sold out! I figured
it would sell out this year as there are some really strong bands in
the lineup. You can still get tickets to the Showcase on Thursday
night, I recommend you do as it is going to be incredible! The link
for tix is http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0E003E6897A9585F , and
more info on the festival can be found at http://www.progpowerusa.com/
.

...I'm fired up about the upcoming G3 show featuring Satriani,
Petrucci and Gilbert -- all guitar fanatics should make it a priority
to see this show but in case you miss it I'll have a review for you in
an upcoming Detritus. See http://www.satriani.com/G3 for more.

...Rush is probably going to be the big summer tour for me, they are
scheduled for June 13th in Atlanta. Tickets for many of the shows go
on sale Saturday so don't miss out. New song "Far Cry" sounds good,
can't wait to hear the whole album on May 1st! See
http://www.rush.com/ .

...In the pet peeve department, surely Eddie was aware he had a
problem that needed attention before he announced a reunion and tour
for this year? Why get your old fans all excited and then pull the rug
out from under them? Oh well, with Michael out of the picture I
couldn't see the tour going well anyway. Maybe Eddie will see clearly
once he is out of rehab and a true reunion can take place, time will
tell... http://www.van-halen.com/

-Well, I've rambled enough for now. I'll try to get more of these out
in the future but you know how that goes!

-Currently on the playlist: Vicious Rumors - WARBALL, Alex Skolnick
Trio - LAST DAY IN PARADISE, Vitalij Kuprij - GLACIAL INFERNO, Daryl
Stuermer - GO, Aghora - FORMLESS, Pyramaze - LEGEND OF THE BONE
CARVER. Vintage Pick: Iron Maiden - SOMEWHERE IN TIME.

-Cheers!

by Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@...)

-Started watching Season 2 of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" this week.
So far, mostly a yawn. The show runs exactly the same last season and
I guess, for me, some of the initial cuteness has worn off. You know
when his kids Nick and Sophie are going to lay into him with a verbal
jab, when wacky Aunt Tracy will say something outlandish, and when
he's going to give his various self-satisfied looks to the camera. Of
the two new episodes so far I'd say the coolest moments were 1)
footage of Gene backstage after a show on the REVENGE tour, talking to
then four-year-old Nick about how "daddy and Uncle Paul" were just on
stage, and 2) footage of Gene and Paul Stanley promoting last year's
KISSOLOGY box set together; in all of Season 1 I think Paul appeared
for maybe five seconds.

-My friends and I were chuckling about this concert announcement:
Night Ranger live at BagelFest in Matoon, IL. Now, it has to be
pointed out that Matoon is the home of Eastern Illinois University so
their probably will be a decent crowd at this show, but you do have to
admit "BagelFest in Matoon" sounds like 20 people at a Bob's Chili
Cook-off type of deal...

-I dug out Shotgun Messiah's VIOLENT NEW BREED last week. Man, I can't
believe that album is *14* years old already. Many people have said
this before and I'll say it again: It was soooo far ahead of its time
it's not funny. Can someone please put out an APB on Harry K. Cody?
His guitar heroics are sorely missed.

-I discovered a co-worker is a big Rush head, so for a goof I leant
him my copy of the WORKING MAN tribute album. Through it he discovered
James LaBrie and Jack Russell, and I have now gotten him into Dream
Theater and Great White. I love doing this.

-Now in my current playlist: Alex Skolnick Trio - LAST DAY IN PARADISE
(Magnatude Records), Saga - WORLDS APART REVISITED (Inside Out Music
America), Tishamingo - THE POINT (Magnatude Records).

DOKKEN - UNCHAIN THE NIGHT (DVD) (A) Rhino, 2007
RT: 115:22
This puppy originally surfaced on VHS wayyyy back in '86, and yes I am
old enough to remember watching it. :) It was a fairly groundbreaking
release at the time because 1) rock home video was still pretty new
and 2) as main men Don Dokken and Mick Brown detail in a bonus
interview, the behind-the-scenes segments filmed on the road and in
hotels showed the band members in some quieter, not "on" moments. The
main program is 45 minutes' worth of promo videos ("Unchain The
Night," "Just Got Lucky," "Breaking The Chains," "Alone Again," "The
Hunter," "In My Dreams," and "It's Not Love"), road life, interview
snippets, and hotel room hi-jinks, all complete with healthy doses of
humor. Some of the footage was shot by the band members themselves on
super 8 and looks understandably grainy, but it adds to the charm. The
single best moment of this section is George Lynch and Jeff Pilson
filming a commercial for the "Guitar Buddy Throw 'n' Go Wrap-around
Guitar Trainer" -- order now to get your bonus free copy of "Metal
Poser" that teaches windmills, spins, deep knee bends, heavy metal
faces, and more! -- that by itself is worth this DVD's purchase price.
The promo videos are snapshots of the era, complete with performance
footage, big hair, cheesy post-apocalypse sets, fire, chains, girls,
motorcycles, playing in the rain, etc., and great stuff like Lynch's
Kajagoogoo hairdo, Don's uber sexy "Breaking The Chains" mini-kimono,
Lynch playing the "Just Got Lucky" solo on a volcano, and the whole
band playing "It's Not Love," driving around town on the back of a
flatbed truck. Bonus DVD materials include a funny, nearly 30-minute
interview with Mick and Don (man, Brown's laugh and enthusiasm are
contagious!); the promo clips for "Walk Away," "Dream Warriors,"
"Heaven Sent," and "Burning Like A Flame" (all of which, naturally,
came out after UNCHAIN THE NIGHT's original release date); and another
23 minutes of Mick and Don talking about the four bonus videos. The
funniest thing in the extras is the "Burning Like A Flame" intro,
where they talk about playing with an effects processor back in the
day that reversed whatever what was spoken into it -- Mick and Don
claim former Dio keyboardist Claude Schnell's name sounded the same
forwards and backwards, thus proving he had signed a deal with the
devil. (Also, in a clever bit of marketing, during the main interview
Don talks about unearthing the tapes that eventually became the
recently-released FROM CONCEPTION: LIVE 1981 live album. I guess now
living next door to Gene Simmons has rubbed off on him!) All in all,
this DVD's release was long overdue as UNCHAIN THE NIGHT is a
mandatory watch for all '80s metallers.

IRON MAIDEN - DEATH ON THE ROAD (DVD) (A-) Iron Maiden
Holdings/Columbia Music Video, 2007
DVD 1: RT: 105:00
DVD 2: RT: 105:00
DVD 3: RT: 195:53

DEATH ON THE ROAD is a bit of a delayed detonation for U.S. fans as
Maiden fanatics in Europe have had the DVD for over a year now;
apparently Steve Harris was unhappy with some aspects of the package
so he ended up pushing the American release date back several times in
order to ensure the highest quality. Was it worth the wait? Of course
it was! DEATH ON THE ROAD finds the venerable metal sextet in top form
at a concert recorded in Dortmund, Germany, on the DANCE OF DEATH tour
in 2003. Like the ROCK IN RIO DVD, DEATH ON THE ROAD features a
multitude of cameras capturing the band at a breakneck pace, with both
a 5.1 and stereo mix included to make you feel like you are right
there in the front row. Maiden tears through 16 songs with all the
power and intensity they are known for, delivering particularly
explosive versions of "Wrathchild," "The Trooper," "Brave New World,"
"Paschendale" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name." If there is one complaint
about the set list it is that some essential material was left out, as
not one song was played from POWERSLAVE or SOMEWHERE IN TIME. A minor
issue, as this tour was highlighting the DANCE OF DEATH album and
indeed there are six songs from that release here, along with the
unexpected inclusion of "Can I Play With Madness" and "Lord Of The
Flies." The sound is amazing, the stage show fantastic as the boys
deliver all the expected theatrics with an energy and flair that many
bands half their age can't duplicate. Also included is a "Special
Features" disc with a 75-minute documentary on the making of the DANCE
OF DEATH album, a 45-minute doc on what goes into the production of
Maiden's massive tour, plus fan and band interviews, promo videos, and
a picture and artwork gallery. Make no mistake, Maiden know how to
package a DVD correctly, and DEATH ON THE ROAD is highly recommended
for all diehard Maiden fans as well as those who are interested in
seeing the band performing in a modern setting. Get it.

Seems I'm reviewing as much jazz and progressive rock as I am metal
and hard rock these days, and I must say it's a joy when the music on
offer is as good as that found on GO. Daryl Stuermer is probably best
known to rock fans for his work with Genesis and Phil Collins, but he
originally cut his teeth as a fusion player in Jean Luc Ponty's band,
playing on some very memorable albums such as AURORA, IMAGINARY VOYAGE
and ENIGMATIC OCEAN. Daryl has also found time to release some well-
received solo albums, and we can certainly add GO to that list.
Stylistically GO is very well played jazz-rock fusion, incorporating
elements of Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and especially Shawn Lane, as
GO sounds to my ears like a close cousin to Shawn's POWERS OF TEN
album. Highlights are many, just check out the emotional melodicism of
"Dream In Blue," the killer groove and energy of "Breaking Point,"
awesome in-the-pocket virtuosity of "Meltdown" or the uplifting feel
of "The Archer." The production is spot-on excellent, with great
ensemble playing by Daryl's band including drummer John Calarco,
keyboardist Kostia Efimov and bassists Eric Hervey and Leland Sklar.
If you love expertly played jazz-rock fusion you'll want to put a copy
of GO in your collection immediately, and make sure to see Daryl on
the Genesis reunion tour as I'm sure that will be something very
special!
