-The Saga Is Complete ... Queensryche Perform MINDCRIME AT THE MOORE

Double CD and Double DVD Featuring the Full Theatrical Performance of
OPERATION: MINDCRIME I and II Are Both Available From Rhino June 26

LOS ANGELES -- Queensryche brought the group's acclaimed OPERATION:
MINDCRIME albums to the stage last year performing the original and
its 2006 sequel in their entirety during the group's successful North
American tour. The marathon shows included a full theatrical
production complete with surround sound, video imagery and actors
portraying the concept albums' characters onstage with the band. Rhino
captures Queensryche's epic performance in front of the quintet's
hometown crowd at the Moore Theater in Seattle with MINDCRIME AT THE
MOORE. The double CD ($24.98) and double DVD ($29.99) versions will
both be available June 26 at all physical retail outlets and
http://www.rhino.com/ . The album will also be available at all
digital retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $14.99. An
iTunes exclusive version featuring a video of "The Chase" with Ronnie
James Dio will be available for $15.99.

The CD includes singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate along with
guitarists Michael Wilton and Mike Stone, bassist Eddie Jackson and
drummer Scott Rockenfield performing all 32 MINDCRIME tracks plus a
two-song encore featuring their signature hits -- "Jet City Woman" and
"Walk In The Shadows." The DVD features the same performance expanded
with bonus material including a tour documentary, a featurette on the
band's "Rock & Ride Across America" charity motorcycle ride for the
VH1 Save The Music Foundation, and a live performance of "The Chase"
from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, featuring Ronnie James
Dio's only public appearance as Dr. X.

"This concert is the realization of an idea that began nearly two
decades ago," says Tate. "The story and music of OPERATION: MINDCRIME
is very dear to the band. We are thrilled with this performance and
proud to share it with our audience."

Queensryche released OPERATION: MINDCRIME in 1988. Praised by critics
and certified platinum, the album was an acclaimed success remaining
on Billboard's Top 200 for more than a year. In 2006 the band released
a long-awaited sequel to their magnum opus to critical and commercial
success. The album debuted at #14 on the Top 200, their highest debut
in over a decade.

The concept albums follow an intriguing and complex plot that revolves
around Dr. X, a political puppet master who brainwashes Nikki -- the
story's main character -- to assassinate corrupt public figures. The
story also includes Nikki's lover, Sister Mary. A former teenage
prostitute who becomes a nun, Sister Mary is murdered mysteriously,
leaving the cliffhanger "Who Killed Sister Mary?" Set 20 years after
the original, OPERATION: MINDCRIME II explores Nikki's fate after
being released from prison and reveals the identity of Mary's killer.
The album centers on revenge and what it does to people, their
emotions and the choices they make.

Phoenixville, PA. The musician lineup will be the same as the European
dates with core member Don Schiff joining the band for this show on
NS/Stick. Lana Lane will make a special appearance in the Rocket
Scientists set at the festival. More info at http://www.rosfest.com/ .

Don Schiff appears live with Rocket Scientists with the gracious
support of Stick Enterprises.

ABOUT STICK ENTERPRISES: This California Stick manufacturing and
marketing corporation was founded by musician/inventor Emmett Chapman,
creator of the legendary Chapman Stick as well as the more recent NS/
Stick, a design collaboration between Emmett and Ned Steinberger.
Emmett discovered and created the unique "Stick" two-handed tapping
method on his nine-string guitar in 1969. It was a totally new way of
playing on strings -- fingers of both hands aligned parallel to the
frets and to each other, each hand approaching the fretboard from
opposite sides. This technique has now been in use for nearly 40 years
by Stick players and also by those tapping guitarists and bassists who
align both hands at right angles to the neck and strings. Don became
one of Emmett's first students in 1975 and quickly rose to band
performance level on Stick from a professional bass player's
perspective. The student then began to inspire the teacher to new
heights as Don applied his funky left-hand bass rhythm concepts to
Emmett's powerful tapping technique. More information at
http://www.stick.com/ .

ROCKET SCIENTISTS was formed in the late 1980s by keyboardist Erik
Norlander and vocalist / guitarist Mark McCrite. The two released
their first CD EARTHBOUND in 1993 joined by then-session bassist Don
Schiff. Schiff quickly became a part of the band for their second
release in 1995 BRUTAL ARCHITECTURE, and the three toured in the U.S.
and Europe in 1997 along with drummer Tommy Amato culminating in the
live CD EARTH BELOW AND SKY ABOVE: LIVE IN EUROPE AND AMERICA. In
1999, Rocket Scientists released OBLIVION DAYS, raising the bar on
already high expectations. At the turn of the century, Norlander,
Schiff and McCrite all worked on solo projects in addition to backing
symphonic rock vocal icon Lana Lane on several tours around the world.
The latest release is the band's fourth studio album REVOLUTION ROAD,
a double CD released in the fall of 2006, their strongest and most
successful title to date.

LANA LANE is an accomplished rock vocalist with a long history of
albums and tours. Lana began touring in Japan in 1998 to support
GARDEN OF THE MOON and the subsequent BALLAD COLLECTION and QUEEN OF
THE OCEAN releases. She then expanded her touring efforts to Europe in
2001 to support SECRETS OF ASTROLOGY with additional tours in 2003 and
2004. Lana has been dubbed as "The Queen Of Symphonic Rock" by her
fans and the press, and yet she remains a very versatile artist able
to move from intimate jazz pieces to bone crushing progressive metal.
But in the end it is Lana's love of melody and artistry that reigns
over all. Lana is a dedicated artist who approaches her craft with
grace and integrity. She celebrated the 10 year anniversary of her
first album in 2005 with the stunning concept album, LADY MACBETH, and
has recently released a live DVD of her 10th Anniversary Concert Tour.
Lana's newest release is GEMINI, an album of classic rock covers
recorded with an all-star band.

-Dead End Kidz Udate

[Note: This was sent by our very own John Erigo, who doubles as the
front man for the Dead End Kidz. - Tim]

Hey friends. Yeah, it's been a while, and yeah, I did say I was
"retired," but I'm NOT dead yet!!! Just wanted to shoot you all a
quick update on what's going on. I am not sure how many of you are on
MySpace, but that's where most of the DEK action has been taking place
lately. PLEASE go to http://www.myspace.com/dekmusic to see! We have
four songs there to listen to/download and recently, a day after our
first anniversary on MySpace, we received our 10,000th play. Now I
know there are bands on there with way more plays than us, but for a
band that hasn't really done any promoting or gigging, we felt like
that was quite an accomplishment! Going into the studio last July to
record the seven songs that make up UNFINISHED BUSINESS, we never
dreamed that many plays from the Internet! So, that's really cool. We
ARE going to "press" a CD, with artwork and everything, so I am sure
you'll have one soon (if you want one that is!).

This past Monday, we actually got together and jammed as we are
planning to do some kind of live event(s) later this year, so be
ready! While this is not a full fledged comeback, we do want to have
fun with this project and do some promoting of the CD UNFINISHED
BUSINESS when we get the final product.

So, again, PLEASE check out the MySpace page and read some of the
blogs for more details. We hope you're all doin' good and ready for
some kick-ass rock 'n' roll, DEK style!

-Foghat Signs To Metro City Records With Release Of LIVE II On May
22nd And Continues Non-Stop Tour

Best known for their live performances and classic rock anthems "Slow
Ride" and "Fool For The City," which remain in rotation on many rock
radio stations to this day, Foghat continues to bring their hard-edged
rock boogie blues to the masses, as tour dates for 2007 continue to be
added and firmed up.

The group, which features Roger Earl (drums), Craig MacGregor (bass),
Charlie Huhn (vocals/guitars) and Bryan Bassett (lead/slide guitar),
will issue LIVE II. Thirty years ago the Double Platinum FOGHAT LIVE
was released. It is considered to be one of the best live albums of
the '70s. Metro City Records, in conjunction with Foghat Records, will
issue a follow-up to LIVE with a self-produced two-CD set entitled
LIVE II on May 22nd and will be available in all major retail outlets

rehearsal bonus tracks. Leading up to this release was the 2003 studio
album, FAMILY JOULES as well as THE OFFICIAL BOOTLEG DVD VOLUME 1 from

whipping up a blues-rock frenzy for their audience. Your chance to
catch the band in the flesh is approaching fast as they will be
touring non-stop throughout the year.

Label head Bill Proulx says, "Metro City Records is very proud to sign
Foghat. This group is one of the premier bands of classic rock and
boogie blues. Foghat is one of the bands I always felt that just
didn't get enough credit for their creative and energetic output. Our
goal is to give them the full recognition they deserve. The band also
brings to the label an artist that already has a well-established fan
base and a commitment to continue putting out great music. I look
forward to participate in the continued success of the band."

-Crushed Issue Mike Clink-Produced Debut, MY MACHINE

Specializing in a sound that manages to merge goth with metal -- while
not sacrificing melody -- the five-man band Crushed should easily
garner heaps of crossover interest with their just-released debut, MY
MACHINE. Hailing from the arid locale of Phoenix, Arizona, the group
(which consists of singer/guitarist Mark Lauer, guitarist Mike
Halland, guitarist/keyboardist Harry McCaleb, bassist Mike Brown, and
drummer Jeff Garten) quickly impressed one of rock's most renowned
producers, Mike Clink, who was the main man behind none other than
Guns N' Roses' APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, among other rock classics.
"Crushed is a blend of hard rock with a melodic overtone, similar to a
wolf in sheep's clothing," explains Clink. "The band gave 110% to make
sure this was the best Crushed album they could deliver."

Clink's expertise quickly rubbed off on Crushed, resulting in one
helluva debut. "Mike only works on one level and that is top notch
professionalism," adds Lauer. "I have to say I really learned a lot
about myself and recording by working with Mike Clink. He encouraged
me to dig deeper and to bring out my best." Garten also voices Lauer's
sentiment. "[Clink] was able to dig in, and bring out the performances
that were inside of us. His astute selections of the people he works
with have made MY MACHINE an album I'm extremely proud to call my
own."

The 14-track album perfectly captures "the Crushed sound," which
touches upon riff rockers ("Nocturnal"), melodicism ("Crash Coping"),
and tracks that touch upon both approaches ("Hovering"). Having built
a solid following in the Arizona region, the group is itching to bring
the songs from MY MACHINE to life on concert stages throughout the
world, admits Halland. "We throw in new songs to test them as well, so
fans can hear songs live they would have not heard otherwise. Crushed
is a very energetic live band -- the band looks at each show as an
event."

UPCOMING CRUSHED SHOWS:

Apr 14, 2007 - 8:00P - JOE'S GROTTO - PHOENIX, Arizona

May 17, 2007 - 12:00P - Hyperactive Conference and Music Festival 2007
- ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico

-Lion Music News And Updates

April 20th 2007 Releases

Milan Polak - STRAIGHT

After two hugely successful instrumental albums in DREAMSCAPES and
GUITAR ODYSSEY, Austrian guitar virtuoso Milan Polak returns with his
first solo vocal album entitled STRAIGHT. The album is powered by 13
rocking tracks that not only showcase Milan's guitar prowess but also
his great bluesy vocals backed by a killer band of Randy Coven (bass,
ex-Malmsteen, Ark, MCM), John Macaluso (drums, ex-Malmsteen, Ark, John
Macaluso & Union Radio) and Fabio Trentini (bass). Fans of Milan's
guitar work will not find any lack of fret board prowess but the
addition of vocals gives a more balanced packaged.

http://www.lionmusic.com/straight.htm

Delphian - UNRAVEL

Raw and honest; that's how the recordings of UNRAVEL, Delphian's
second album can best be described. The band went for the recording
takes which had the best feel and flow, which led to a grooving and
heavy album. The style of Delphian has evolved from progressive metal
in the earlier recordings to a heavy kind of rock on the latest album
UNRAVEL. From heavy to epic, all completed with dramatic, emotional
lyrics and vocals by female singer Aniek Janssen. Reviewers speak of
a
non-comparable unique sound, consisting of dynamic, creative rhythms
combined with melodic guitar riffs and crystal clear vocals and flute
playing.

Steen Grontved - NIGHT VISION GOGGLES

Danish guitarist Steen Grøntved is a veteran of the session music
scene having appeared on countless releases over the last few years
(within Denmark mostly) across many genres. Steen makes his debut onto
the instrumental guitar platform with the fusion/jazz/rock rich NIGHT
VISION GOGGLES. The album is home to 12 tracks that travel through a
myriad of tonalities and cultural expressions with an end product that
is very accessible and possesses strong melodic content. NIGHT VISION
GOGGLES is a very fresh sounding guitar instrumental with lush
melodies and great ambience.

Dave Martone Gaining Superb Worldwide Press

Canadian guitar whiz Dave Martone has been picking up superb critical
praise from around the globe for his latest release WHEN THE ALIENS
COME.

Reviews
"After listening to this breathtaking display, you have to wonder why
Martone does not attract the same attention as Malmsteen, Satriani,
etc."

"Simply said if you like guitar instrumentals this one of the most
original I have heard in sometime and has its very own definite place
in the genre. If the greys do come and wipe us all out, it will be
something to look forward to if this is their soundtrack."

"Canadian guitar maestro Dave Martone has produced a literally out of
this world album! The premise behind the music on this all
instrumental affair is too imagine music as it would be played in 400
hundred years time. This being the case he whips out the SFX guitar
and boy can he play!"

"Martone is perhaps one of today's best innovators on the instrument,
many know of his talents, and many should be checking him out, a true
pioneer of his craft and one that refuses to stagnate in a sea of
guitarists, where he stands out. So for all you fans of the guitar,
this is the CD to get for 2007, or 2407 for that matter."
- Prognosis
http://user190176.wx17.registeredsite.com/MUSIC_DBCDInfo.asp?
txtCDID=21\402

"If you're a fan of progressive instrumental guitar music, consider
this a must-hear album."

"WHEN THE ALIENS COME is an album that sets out to push the envelope
on playing, similar to Greg Howe and Ron Thal, with inventive prowess
on the six strings to reiterate the melodic stance at a different
level."

-Intense Words For Intense

Released domestically today, Intense's AS OUR ARMY GROWS is the Little
Power Metal Record That Could. Slowly yet surely, good word has been
going around these hitherto-unknown Brits' debut for Napalm Records.
It's power metal with class and grit, true and triumphant yet never
flowery or cheese-grating. To make an important distinction, Intense
conceed that their brand of power metal is much more akin to classic
Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, and Nevermore than, say, their more aromatic
European contemporaries. Press Folk seem to agree:

"They may be marketed as power metal, but Intense seldom cross over
into the histrionics, trite melodies, and overly sanitized realms of
Euro power metal . . . take their cues from Iced Earth, Jag Panzer,
Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden . . . bordering on the brilliant -- you
won't hear many better pure metal albums this year" – Zero Tolerance
[4.5/6 rating]

"One of the bands that do power metal properly, as they don't re-
generate the cliches associated with this often-weak genre . . .
overall, the whole album delivers in a big way, and it succeeds
because it knows where to put the power in metal and that's what
separates them from the flock" – Caustic Truths [5/5 rating]

"Joins this elite force [of Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, and Kamelot]
in crafting a traditional heavy metal record with a vibrant power
metal base that possesses a decidedly Iced Earth vibe . . . for those
who simply want to hear some old-school power metal, which in the past
few years has become a rare commodity indeed" – SOD

"Those wishing for a return to the Matt Barlow days of Iced Earth will
find a measure of it in AS OUR ARMY GROWS . . . does a nice job of
writing tunes that are memorable . . . a quality release that should
appeal to many fans of the style" – Blabbermouth.net

"Balls-out, climatic power metal that is sure to win over hordes of
fans on North American and European shores" – Explicitly Intense

"Give Intense mega kudos for putting out a trilogy of songs on this
album dedicated to 'Videodrome,' if not for it being an amazing film
but just for being that much more original and creative than the
derivative fantasy fare. If you like traditional heavy metal marketed
as 'power metal,' then I've no doubt Intense is an orgasm waiting to
happen for you" – Dirt Culture

"Intense's own name pretty much sums up what's afoot here . . . full
of thick guitar grooves that carry the melody on a wave of metallic
muscle . . . puts the power into power metal . . . power metal with a
bite, power metal for metalheads who like their heavy metal HEAVY. . .
It's still very much power metal, but it's got a big, bad-ass fist" –
Corazine.com

"Their most powerful, well-thought and -constructed album to date . .
. extremely talented and have one of the most impressive rhythm
sections in the power metal genre . . . If you're a fan of power metal
in the vein of bands like Iced Earth, you can't go wrong here" –
BlackAngel Promotions

-Lion's Share Signs With AFM Records

After four successful albums and several tours with bands like
Manowar, Dio, Motorhead, Saxon, U.D.O., Iced Earth and Nevermore,
Swedish heavy metal masters Lion's Share are back with their long-
awaited comeback masterpiece, EMOTIONAL COMA, due out on June 15 in
Europe through AFM Records. The band features guitar player and
founding member Lars Chriss, along with vocalist Patrik Johansson
(Astral Doors, Wuthering Heights), bass player Sampo Axelsson (Glenn
Hughes) and well-known session drummer Richard Evensand (Chimaira,
Soilwork, Therion).

Commented Chriss: "We are extremely proud and honored to be a part of
such a great label as AFM Records. AFM is home to many great bands and
we couldn't be more excited to be a part of that roster. It feels
great to work with a label staff that understands our music and goals.
We are looking forward to a long and successful cooperation."

According to a press release, EMOTIONAL COMA is "the heaviest and most
powerful Lion's Share record to date" and it features guest
appearances by Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Glen Drover (Megadeth) and Mats
Levén (Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen).

Commented Markus Wosgien, A&R of AFM Records: "The new record is heavy
metal at its finest. It shows the band from another side, less
progressive, more straight and metal. If you are into the old gods
like Saxon, Judas Priest or Accept -- you will love this unique and
high-class record, which is a new beginning in the history of this
amazing band."

EMOTIONAL COMA track listing:

1. Cult Of Denial
2. The Arsonist
3. Emotional Coma (feat. Glen Drover)
4. Clones Of Fate
5. The Edge Of The Razor (feat. Bruce Kulick)

-THE DEVIL KNOWS MY NAME In Stores Now -- April 3rd

Featuring Joe Satriani, Jim Root & Eric Johnson

HOLLYWOOD -- Out of the dark passages of John 5's mind comes this
mind-blowing, sinister guitar instrumental. THE DEVIL KNOWS MY NAME is
John 5's third solo album, due out on April 3rd, 2007, which features
guest guitar solos from two legendary guitarists -- Joe Satriani and
Eric Johnson with newer legend in-the-making Jim Root (Slipknot).
Keeping time are Zombie band-mates Tommy Clufetos (drums) and Piggy D.
(bass). The album was recorded in the middle of night where John 5
would lay down his leads. This is the only album that all leads were
doubled -- an instrumental feat that is rarely taken on by the best of
the guitar players.

THE DEVIL KNOWS MY NAME melds around clues, quotes and references of
serial killers, wielding an eerie tone for those who dare to enter the
world of John 5's mind. "I wanted a different tone to the instrumental
with twisted imagery of sounds," explains John 5. "Utilizing serial
killers came to light for this project while looking at their crimes
and how distorted their minds work."

Not all is sinister on THE DEVIL KNOWS MY NAME but there are tunnels
to the past greats. John 5 shreds-out his version of Guns N' Roses'
"Welcome To The Jungle" and Chet Atkins "Young Thing." "I chose
'Welcome To The Jungle' for the one reason -- when I was becoming
successful it was easy to stay in the nest back home, then I saw the
video and that made me get up and go to Hollywood." "Welcome To The
Jungle" will be the first release off the album and is hitting the
airwaves soon.

John 5 has created a worldwide following as a widely respected
guitarist with such platinum artists as Marilyn Manson, David Lee
Roth, Rob Halford and now an integral member of Rob Zombie. John 5's
eclectic influences combine for a truly unique guitar oriented record
that once again sets new standards in the genre.

-Reviews For Emperor Multimedia CDs

Just to let all our media friends know that POLISHING OF METAL Author
Derek McDonald was on 89.9FM (Toronto) last night on Mike Lazaris's
"Hard Beyond Driven" heavy metal radio show to discuss POLISHING OF
METAL. The successful interview covered most aspects of the project in
a light hearted manner. This was the last article on the show for the
year. A deal is being attempted to see the interview rebroadcasted
over the Diskery Web site for those who missed the popular segment.

BW&BK's Martin Popoff has reviewed POLISHING OF METAL for the next
edition of the magazine, although the project contained far more data
than his books ever did, he requested to review it and concluded after
reading only the first 339 pages that it was "Practically un-rateable"
but nontheless gave it a full five marks! In the short and less-than-
detailed article he commented about "The bizarre brainchild of
Oakville, Ontario's Derek McDonald" featuring such bands as "Goat
Horn, Skulgrinder and Penetrator," and confirms that the disc features
"weblinks, five hours of music and 1,304 band biographies...". The
proposed article is expected to appear in the next edition of the
magazine.

Emperor Multimedia, for its part, has argued that the article was
nonetheless biased and gives the errored conclusion that the entire
CD-ROM featured ONLY 339 pages when it features far more and argues
that the entire section on the music history was skipped over.

The media coverage will nonetheless bolster the already brisk sales of
the world's first all heavy metal multimedia archive CD.

-Yakuza Front Man Comments On Recording Forthcoming Record

Bruce Lamont, front man of Chicago's Yakuza, recently sat down with
forward-thinking webzine Sonic Frontiers to discuss Yakuza's
forthcoming release, TRANSMUTATIONS. Having completed all tracking for
the record with producer Sanford Parker (Pelican, Minsk, Rwake),
TRANSMUTATIONS, the follow-up to 2006's SAMSARA, is currently slated
for a fall release through Prosthetic Records.

A few excerpts from the interview, available in full at Sonic
Frontiers ( http://www.sonicfrontiers.net/php/story-19.html ):

On the album's title:
"TRANSMUTATIONS is the conversion of one object into another, more or
less transforming a base element or an idea into something of
extraordinary value. We attempt this through our writing and
performing, taking something as basic as sounds, moods, etc., and
transform these into something beyond that, something that will affect
the listener on a much deeper level."

On guest appearances on TRANSMUTATIONS:
"This time around, we wanted to focus on ourselves a bit more. We did
have jazz percussionists Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang come in to do
some overdubs. That stuff sounds great."

Yakuza will continue previewing new material live April 8 with Genghis
Tron and label mates Kylesa as well when the band supports Goatwhore

-I didn't hear about it until too late, but apparently Survivor, with
new front man Robin McAuley (ex-MSG, Grand Prix), performed Tuesday
night on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars." Yes, you read that right. And
here I am, Mr. Big Internet Rock Journalist, and I had to hear about
it the morning after...from my mom! I hope it was cool. The funny
thing was when my mom told me about it, I said, "Hey, cool, their new
singer is one of my heavy metal guys from the '80s." She asked, "Does
he have dyed jet-black hair?" "Yes," I said sheepishly." "Then it was
him," she confirmed. :) For more on McAuley and Survivor, check out
http://www.robinmcauley.com/survivor.html .

Then in somewhat thematically related news, I was doing dishes late
last night (again, how metal...) while watching Chicago's ABC 7 news.
The last story -- you know, the kind of cute/funny/warm 'n' fuzzy
thing news shows close with -- was about REO Speedwagon performing at
a suburban Chicago Wal-Mart store yesterday, to promote its new album.
The story finished and the lead anchors were trying to end the
broadcast gracefully, but the sports guy, Mark Giangreco, couldn't
contain himself and said, "I'm gonna shoot myself...Wal-Mart?" With
that, everyone on the set started cracking up. Pretty funny.

-Oh, and keep an eye out for Serenity's WORDS UNTOLD & DREAMS UNLIVED
on Napalm Records. This thing kicks *big* ass and is alreadly my top
album of 2007. Wow.

-Now in my current playlist: Black Sabbath - THE DIO YEARS (Warner

BLACK SABBATH - THE DIO YEARS (A) Warner Bros./Rhino, 2007

What grade did you expect, really? I mean, c'mon, this is
unquestionably historic stuff, even if (unlike me!) you prefer the
Ozzy version of the band. This collection brings together songs from
the Ronnie James Dio-era Sabbath albums -- HEAVEN AND HELL, MOB RULES,
LIVE EVIL, and DEHUMANIZER -- plus three new tracks. Bask in the
glories of classics like "Heaven And Hell," "Neon Knights," "The Mob
Rules," "Die Young," and "Lady Evil," and reintroduce yourself to
underrated gems like "TV Crimes," "Turn Up The Night," and "Falling
Off The Edge Of The World." And what of the new songs? They're worthy
and should stack up well in concert, even if Lord of all Riffing Tony
Iommi's liner notes commentary makes it appear they were thrown
together in formulaic fashion. "The Devil Cried" (the single, and the
"mid-paced" one, per Iommi) is a hefty six-minute lumberer, "Shadow Of
The Wind" (the "quite slow" one) is a trademark Sabbath dirge (its
5:40 length feels like double that...), and closer "Ear In The Wall"
("the up-tempo rocker") is my personal fave of the three, even if the
intro riff recalls "Cardinal Sin" from 1994's CROSS PURPOSES. Extra
bonus points for the nifty inside artwork that seamlessly blends
together imagery from the Dio-era album covers into a fine new piece.
Check the band out now -- rechristened Heaven And Hell, mind you -- as
it tours in support of this excellent release. (Now when is that TONY
MARTIN YEARS compilation and tour by Headless Cross going to happen?

PATRIK CARLSSON - MELODIC TRAVEL (B-) Lion Music, 2006

Patrik Carlsson is another up-and-coming instrumental guitarist from
Sweden whose sophomore release is the mixed but engaging MELODIC
TRAVEL. Patrik puts his Vai, Satriani, Beck and Santana influences to
work on a variety of pieces, covering styles as diverse as rock, jazz,
Latin and funk in a manner that is often more relaxed and playful than
on many of these kind of albums. "Settler's Pleasure" is a strange
choice for an opener, more of a guitar solo idea over programmed
drums, but it is a bit creative starting things off with a piece like
this. "Liberty City" goes with a happier vibe, a bouncy bass
underscoring some nice jazzy lines. Patrik is at his best on tracks
like "Night Vision," where the guitarist really gets into the pocket
and invites the listener into the gentle groove with cool comping and
well placed melodic solos. Patrik can get a bit standard on pieces
like "Kristiina's Song" and "The Great A," but then comes back with
more cool night jazz on the atmospheric "Hip 'N Melodic" and shows
himself to have a skill for flamenco-type playing on "Spanish
Vaganza." Patrik is a good player and seems to be more at home with
the relaxed jazz approach rather than the shred guitar hero thing so
common these days. Points off for the drums which sound too canned to
really propel the music properly, but overall MELODIC TRAVEL reveals
Patrik to be a promising musician attempting to take the guitar
instrumental in a different direction.

ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO - LAST DAY IN PARADISE (A-/B+) Magnatude Records,

Alex Skolnick has made a kind of Saul to Paul transformation over the
last several years; originally coming from a background of thrash
metal with '80s heavy hitters Testament and later performing with
Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, he then earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree from New School University's jazz program in 2001 and has
since re-emerged as a bona fide jazz musician on solo releases GOODBYE
TO ROMANCE and TRANSFORMATION. Alex's latest album is called LAST DAY
IN PARADISE and it is surely his most realized work to date,
thoroughly embracing the jazz idiom while maintaining links to his
past via three excellent cover songs. LAST DAY IN PARADISE begins with
"Mercury Retrograde," a piece which would not sound out of place on a
Pat Metheny album, its breathy vocals soaring over sparkling chord
voicings and cleanly picked melodic lines. The atmospheric title track
enchants with a transcendent melody, while tracks such as "Channel 4"
and "Out There Somewhere" brim with complex and creative
improvisation. The inclusion of jazz versions of "Tom Sawyer,"
"Practice What You Preach" (here renamed "Practica Lo Que Predicas")
and "Revelation (Mother Earth)" is positively inspired, often
surprising in how well the melodies and harmonies translate. Alex
concludes the album with the cleverly offbeat "Western Sabbath Stomp,"
complete with heavy chords and tasty slide guitar. Band mates Matt
"Zebar" Zebroski (drums) and Nathan Peck (bass) are real finds,
excellent musicians easily up to the task of fueling Alex's innovative
arrangements, while Alex consistently shows himself to be a player of
the highest caliber. LAST DAY IN PARADISE may not appeal to young
metal fans lacking a reference for jazz, but for those whose ears are
acclimated this is an exceptional release that will doubtless provide
numerous hours of enjoyment.

VIXEN - LIVE & LEARN (C) Demolition Records, 2007

Man, I really, *really* am trying to get into this but it just ain't
happenin'. The first two Vixen albums from 1988 and 1990 were poof
metal delights, complete with requisite big hair, fun rockers, and
power ballads -- definitely a pair of guilty pleasures. Then part of
the lineup reunited and pooped out TANGERINE in 1998, and the less
said about that the better. Now another decade has passed and founding
member/guitarist Jan Kuehnemund -- notably absent in '98 -- has
assembled a new lineup for LIVE & LEARN. First off, I was surprised by
the shockingly lame cover art: the four ladies sitting at school desks
with the band logo and album title floating above their heads. (You
can just flip the booklet over and display the inside picture as the
cover; it's a much cooler image of a one-room school house being
struck by lightning.) Second off, I was surprised by the fairly
uninspired songs. I expected Kuehnemund to come roaring back, eager to
reclaim the band from past members as her baby. But, not really... New
singer Jenna Sanz-Agero kinda phones it in in places, which doesn't
help. The bright spots are some cool, chorused guitars and heavy
riffing in "I Try," the nice, easy groove in "Pacifist," the driving
beat in "Angry," and good background vocals. LIVE & LEARN is certainly
not like all those "modern" 1990s albums from former hair bands -- you
know, the ones that alienated longtime fans and also failed to
register with the grunge kids -- but it is not very memorable. Perhaps
this is a case of First Album By A New Lineup Syndrome, and the next
one will be stronger.
