-ProgPower USA Sold-Out; Surprise Headline Set Announced
ProgPower USA has announced a surprise headline set for this year's
sold-out edition of the internationally renowned festival. Saturday
night will now finish with an all-star cover set featuring vocalists
from both the showcase and the festival. Each vocalist will be given
the opportunity to perform 1-2 cover songs of their choice with the
music being provided by the members of Pagan's Mind. Additional guests
will join them throughout the set.
"The fans have made this festival a success and it's time to give
something back to them. I wanted to announce this after the sell-out
as a reward instead of in advance as an incentive. It's going to be
one hell of a party on stage," said Promoter Glenn Harveston.
As a result of the additional performance, there has been a major
change in the schedule and door times. "I had to shake things up quite
a bit to make this work. However, the fans can relax knowing that not
one band will have a single minute cut from their previously announced
set lengths," adds Harveston. The new schedule and door times can be
found at the festival Web site: http://www.progpowerusa.com/ .

-Lizzy Borden Album Cover Photo Shoot
Lizzy Borden has shot the cover of the as yet un-named new recording
due out the end of summer.
Lizzy is working with special effects wizard and make-up artist Ralis
Kahn ( http://www.ralisfx.com/ ). Although no details have been
revealed, Ralis has designed the set and the look of the band based on
the characters in the storyline of the new recording.
Famed "Metal" photographer Alex Solca took well over a 1,000 shots in
a two-day marathon, involving extras as well as the band (Lizzy, Joey
Scott, Marten Andersson and Ira Black). At the end of the two-day
shoot the set was literally set ablaze(!) with flames shooting 30 feet
into the air! And all captured on film.
"Because a lot of music is going straight to iTunes, we thought we
would pay special attention to both the cover and the back cover and
fill the inside of the CD booklet with tons of fun shots from this
specialized photo shoot. As we all know, very soon there will no
longer be an actual CD to have a cool booklet for. Everything will go
straight from the studio to your iPod, so we thought we would really
do this one up right!" commented Lizzy.
Fifteen hours worth of video footage was also filmed during the two
day shoot. Stay tuned to http://www.Lizzyborden.com/ for the "Making
of" as well as the cover to be posted soon.
In other news:
Lizzy Borden has enlisted the "metal guitar" services of Jack Frost.
Jack is coming on board to play the New England Metal Festival (April
28 in Worcester, MA) with us as the second guitarist with Ira Black.
Jack is also one of the "special guest" guitarists playing on the new
record due out the end of summer. (

-We Are I Create Buzz With Six-Song EP And "Controlled Chaos Hybrid
Rock"
What was the last band that managed to successfully merge classic
rock's multi-layered sound with prog metal sonic exploration? Few have
been so bold -- but Boston's We Are I are no average band. "Everybody
in the band is a really great player," explains guitarist Rich
Chamberland. "It's really diverse. J. [Staples, singer] is a freak --
he's very melodic, he's got almost like a Freddie Mercury voice, but
he's got a rapid fire delivery to it. Keenan [Wakem, bass], the bass
player, is amazing -- his stage show is killer. He's just a killer
player. New blood, Ralph Arsenault on drums has kicked the band up an
extra notch. He played through 98% of our material -- right off the
bat."
Having already issued one EP, OFF THE HOOK, the quartet has just
unleashed another EP, a self-titled release produced by Anthony J.
Resta, who has worked with the likes of Collective Soul, Megadeth,
Perry Farrell, and Elton John. "I think if you listen to our stuff,
it's heavy but melodic -- it's Queen on steroids, because everybody
sings. This is a four-part-harmony band. What you hear is what you
get. We don't 'kind of pull it off.' I like to think of us as a
'hybrid band,' not alternative. We fuse a lot of stuff together. If
you listen to it, you've got J. doing some stuff like Freddie Mercury,
then you turn around and we've three over four time, so it's like Tool
but even a little crazier. But it makes sense in the song --
controlled chaos hybrid rock."
Soon after their formation, We Are I quickly made fans out of some of
the Boston area's most successful and renowned hard rock musicians,
including Disturbed's Dave Draiman (who says of the band, "Their CD
jumped out at us -- we heard something very unique, the caliber of
musicianship is top notch") and Godsmack's Robbie Merrill (who is
highly anticipating the group's new release -- "I just couldn't take
their first album out of my CD player, I can't wait for the new
stuff!").
As a result of Draiman and Merrill's support of the group -- and prime
opening spots for the likes of Disturbed, Lacuna Coil, and King's X --
record labels are beginning to buzz around We Are I. With even great
success certainly not far off, it's the band's desire to pull through
the rough times that has gotten them to where they are today. "We
always seem to beat the odds and get on with it. It's been a struggle.
But when it really gets rough is when everybody comes together the
most and we pull it off."

-Crushed Issue Mike Clink-Produced Debut, MY MACHINE
Specializing in a sound that manages to merge goth with metal -- while
not sacrificing melody -- the five-man band Crushed should easily
garner heaps of crossover interest with their just-released debut, MY
MACHINE. Hailing from the arid locale of Phoenix, Arizona, the group
(which consists of singer/guitarist Mark Lauer, guitarist Mike
Halland, guitarist/keyboardist Harry McCaleb, bassist Mike Brown, and
drummer Jeff Garten) quickly impressed one of rock's most renowned
producers, Mike Clink, who was the main man behind none other than
Guns N' Roses' APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, among other rock classics.
"Crushed is a blend of hard rock with a melodic overtone, similar to a
wolf in sheep's clothing," explains Clink. "The band gave 110% to make
sure this was the best Crushed album they could deliver."
Clink's expertise quickly rubbed off on Crushed, resulting in one
helluva debut. "Mike only works on one level and that is top notch
professionalism," adds Lauer. "I have to say I really learned a lot
about myself and recording by working with Mike Clink. He encouraged
me to dig deeper and to bring out my best." Garten also voices Lauer's
sentiment. "[Clink] was able to dig in, and bring out the performances
that were inside of us. His astute selections of the people he works
with have made MY MACHINE an album I'm extremely proud to call my
own."
The fourteen-track album perfectly captures "the Crushed sound," which
touches upon riff rockers ("Nocturnal"), melodicism ("Crash Coping"),
and tracks that touch upon both approaches ("Hovering"). Having built
a solid following in the Arizona region, the group is itching to bring
the songs from MY MACHINE to life on concert stages throughout the
world, admits Halland. "We throw in new songs to test them as well, so
fans can hear songs live they would have not heard otherwise. Crushed
is a very energetic live band -- the band looks at each show as an
event."
Upcoming Crushed Shows:
Mar 31, 2007 - 1:30P - TEMPE MUSIC FESTIVAL - TEMPE, Arizona
Apr 14, 2007 - 8:00P - JOE'S GROTTO - PHOENIX, Arizona
May 17, 2007 - 12:00P - Hyperactive Conference and Music Festival 2007

-Lion Music Is Proud To Announce The Signing Of A New Progressive
Metal Sensation -- Twinspirits
Twinspirits is the latest step in Daniele Liverani's career. This
project comes with the purpose of creating a band that really can
break through in the progressive music world! During his musical
trips, Daniele gathered over the last few years the suitable elements
that could fit his design. Human engine Dario Ciccioni (
http://www.dariociccioni.net/ ) on drums, guitar prodigy Tommy Ermolli
( http://www.tommyermolli.com/ ), bass talent Alberto Rigoni (
http://www.albertorigoni.net/ ) and the raw voice power singer Sψren
Adamsen ( http://www.nico.dk/ ) alongside the mastermind keyboardist
Daniele Liverani make up this fresh powerful new band.
It all started when Daniele met Dario rehearsing on his drums in a
recording studio. The meeting gave shape to the three episodes of
Daniele's Genius Rock Opera ( http://www.geniusrockopera.com/ ) . Some
years later at DISMA Music Show, another important event happened.
Daniele and Dario saw Tommy playing some Vai/Satriani tunes and
decided to come in touch with this young (he was just 14!) talented
guitarist. After some time, the "core" was complete with the welcoming
to the band of Alberto (progressive bass player for many bands like
Ascra, Dream Theater cover band). After auditioning many great singers
across the international scene (including Gψran Edman, Terry Ilous and
many others) they found the best matching voice in Sψren Adamsen with
his incredible versatility and powerful style. The Twinspirits lineup
was then complete!
The first studio album called THE MUSIC THAT WILL HEAL THE WORLD is
released on Lion Music ( http://www.lionmusic.com/ ) in June 2007 with
worldwide distribution and will please all fans of progressive metal
that appreciate an original sound, strong songs and virtuoso
musicianship.
Plans are being set up for live shows around Europe to promo the new
album.

-Manes Featured In Book About The History Of Gothic Rock
A new book named "Obskure Opus I," due out mid-May, features an
exclusive in-depth interview with Manes where they discuss their
history and development as well as their new album. The book features
articles on the pioneers of the gothic musical movement like Sisters
Of Mercy, The Mission, Diamanda Galas, Christian Death, Fields Of The
Nephilim and many more, most of them based on exclusive and unreleased
interviews with the artists. The closely linked industrial and avant-
garde black metal movements is also discussed, where Manes is featured
as a part of the latter segment. The preface of the book is written by
Mick Mercer, author of books like "Gothic Rock 'n' Roll," "Gothic Rock
'n' roll Black Book" and "The Hex Files: The Goth Bible." As a part of
the interview with Manes, they comment on the process of making their
new album HOW THE WORLD CAME TO AN END:
"...[with the new album we] try to walk our own path as much as
possible for real, and try to break with preconception from both
outside and within the band. And through that feel the freedom
released when you can see each album, or any other form of output, as
a stand-alone entity, not just another step in fully designing the
ultimate bullseye product for the predicted target audience ... Each
album as an invention."
The book is in French language only per today, but an English version
is being planned.

-East Meets West On Ozzfest As Taiwanese Band ChthoniC Joins The
Tour's Lineup
TRENTON, N.J. -- Ozzfest will get a taste of the Far East as the
Taiwanese black metal band ChthoniC joins the traveling heavy metal
festival's lineup this summer.
"It's our pleasure to play Ozzfest as the first Asian extreme metal
band," said ChthoniC front man Freddy. "We believe that we are going
to lead a wave of Asian extreme metal to the world!"
Added guitarist Jesse: "I have dreamt of standing on this stage!"
ChthoniC's presence on the tour is significant also because Ozzfest
marks ChthoniC's first full U.S. tour. ChthoniC's past American
performances have been limited to special appearances at metal
festivals, where the group first began making a name for themselves
stateside a few years back.
"It took us 10 years to be on the stage of Ozzfest and it's one of the
biggest opportunities of our career," said bassist Doris. "Based on
the experience of our numerous tours in Asia, we have faith that
metalheads in the U.S. are going to be blown away by this Typhoon of
Oriental Extreme Metal."
In its 12th year, Ozzfest has made the bold move to become "FreeFest,"
an event entirely free for fans. Tens of thousands of fans are
expected to attend.
Called "the Black Sabbath of Asia" by the Taipei Times for its impact
on heavy music, ChthoniC has furthered its Western reputation with the
release of its latest -- and fourth in all -- release, SEEDIQ BALE.
Using the weepy sounds of the "er-hu," a traditional Eastern two-
string violin that dates back to the Tang Dynasty of the 618-907,
ChthoniC adds a unique element to its symphonic style of black metal.
ChthoniC has stirred up controversy in the past with its strong
Taiwanese pro-independence stance, which has been the focus of much of
the band's past material. In keeping with its culturally-inspired
concepts, SEEDIQ BALE reaches further back into Taiwanese history to
the legend of the Seediq and its struggle with Japan over land and
religion.
Hailing from a country with a little-known metal scene, ChthoniC has
gained national attention in its native land where it was awarded
"Best Rock Group" at the 14th Annual Golden Melody Awards, the Eastern
Asian equivalent of a Grammy. The award was presented to the band by
none other than the country's President Chen Shui-bian. "Music is more
powerful, more moving than politicians," the President said before
ChthoniC joined him on stage.
The group capped off that momentous year by playing the annual New
Year's Eve live, nationally broadcasted concert in front of
President's Hall and with the release of the band's Mandarin theme for
the 21st Century Fox Taiwan release of "Freddy Vs. Jason."
ChthoniC's previous albums, WHERE THE ANCESTORS' SOULS GATHERED, 9TH
EMPYREAN, and RELENTLESS RECURRENCE, have been recorded in both
Mandarin and English.

-We got a large shipment of discs from MVD Audio, who's handling a
cool series of reissues from Polish label Metal Mind Productions. The
bulk of the discs are late '80s/early '90s thrashers originally
released by Roadrunner/RoadRacer, with titles from Sadus, Heathen,
Realm, Xentrix, Last Crack, Disincarnate, Pestilence, Toxik, Solitude
Aeternus, Znowhite, Atrophy, Gorguts...and Crimson Glory. (More on
that later.) See http://www.mvdb2b.com/ , http://www.metalmind.com.pl/
, http://www.metalopolis.pl/ , and http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/
for more.
Most of the discs have some form of bonus content, which is always
appreciated, but the real treasure (for me anyway) is the liner notes.
Even if I don't know squat about, or enjoy, a band I still dig reading
about its origin, especially if the band dates back to the '80s. This
stuff is a real history lesson. Some of the liners talk about and have
pictures of the bands' old demo tapes, complete with hand-drawn
artwork. Takes me right back to the days when I was discovering local
Chicago bands like Radakka, O'Dette, Defcon, Prisoner, Myth, etc. Ah,
good times.
Anyway, back to Crimson Glory... You'd think this reissue series would
include the 1986 self-titled debut or its all-time classic follow-up,
1988's TRANSCENDENCE, but no, it includes 1991's freaky, Led Zeppish
departure STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL. Odd. I remember when this came out I
*forced* myself to listen to it until I found stuff on it that I
liked. Yes, the tribal drumming from new skinsman Ravi Jakhotia was
killer, but the new direction really threw me for a loop. (FYI: There
are no bonus tracks on this disc.)
What's more, 1999's ASTRONOMICA is also included, despite the facts
it's significantly younger than everything else in the series, and it
wasn't originally released by Roadrunner or RoadRacer. Double odd. But
get past that quickly and go buy this, because its bonus content is a
second disc featuring all the B-sides and import bonus tracks from the
era, including a couple good demos and five vintage live songs
recorded by the classic lineup.
The staff here at Detritus is putting the full-court press on this
reissue series, so stay tuned for a bunch of reviews.

SUN CAGED - ARTEMISIA (B+) Lion Music, 2007
10 tracks, RT: 69:56

Describing the music of Sun Caged is no easy task, as the band takes
some of the expected prog metal influences like Dream Theater and
Fates Warning and mixes in some rather unusual elements, sometimes
bringing to mind the dark alternative sound of Alice In Chains and
Faith No More, and this blend actually works quite well on the
outfit's second offering ARTEMISIA. Very conspicuous on ARTEMISIA are
the vocals of Paul Adrian Villarreal, who effectively conveys a sense
of foreboding with lyrics matching his often bleak and disconsolate
delivery (imagine a synthesis of Steve Walsh, Layne Staley and John
Arch!). Founder and guitarist Marcel Coenen once again displays his
genius for writing interesting and intricate riffs with creative solos
integrated brilliantly rather than showcased as the main event.
Newcomers Rene Kroon, Roel Vink and Roel Van Helden (keyboards, bass
and drums respectively) get to display their considerable talents on
killer pieces such as "A Fair Trade," "Bloodline," "Engelbert The
Inchworm" and "Dialogue." The production is excellent, one of the
better mixes I've heard from the Lion camp. ARTEMISIA runs over an
hour and the despondency has a tendency to get to you by the time it's
all over, but otherwise I can fully recommend it to those looking for
some very well constructed prog metal. Note: Sun Caged were supposed
to play at the ProgPower USA Pre-Party in 2004 but unfortunately were
unable to make it, unintentionally disappointing many who were looking
forward to their North American debut; I hope I get a chance to see
them there at some point in the future, as they are a near-perfect fit
for the festival...

WUTHERING HEIGHTS - THE SHADOW CABINET (B+) Sensory, 2007
Disc 1: 10 tracks, RT: 55:34
Disc 2: 7 tracks, RT: 42:57

Wuthering Heights goes a step further in perfecting their
progressive/power/folk metal amalgam with fourth album THE SHADOW
CABINET, an excellent slice of medieval themed stories and melodies
sure to excite those with an ear for something different. On songs
such as "The Raven," "Faith - Apathy Divine Part I," "Envy" and "I
Shall Not Yield," founder, guitarist and songwriter Erik Ravn creates
rich and vivid imagery with his lyrics, channeled via the powerful
voice of Nils Patrik Johansson (Astral Doors). You'll find great
musicianship all over THE SHADOW CABINET, including furious drumming
courtesy of Morten Gade Sorensen (Pyramaze), ripping leads by Erik and
co-guitarist Martin Arendal, Andreas Lindahl's majestic keyboards and
the dexterous bass playing of Teddy Muller. Probably as much of an
influence as traditional power metal mainstays like Helloween and
Gamma Ray is Celtic-flavored progressive rock like Jethro Tull and
Skyclad, Wuthering Heights opting to incorporate violin, piano and
acoustic guitar in very effective arrangements. THE SHADOW CABINET
features a great sound due in no small part to veteran producer Tommy
Hansen, who really manages to bring out the power and unique
characteristics of the band. I find the anthemic choruses on songs
like "Demon Desire" and "Sleep" a bit standard but otherwise this is a
fantastic disc that should immediately find its way into the hands of
those into bands such as Blind Guardian, Rhapsody and Falconer. This
version of the album also includes a live recording of Wuthering
Heights' 2004 ProgPower USA performance -- entitled ROAMING FAR FROM
HOME -- which suffers from poor sound but is a nice inclusion for fans
and especially those who were in attendance at that show, the first
the band had played outside their homeland. I'm looking forward to
seeing these guys live again now that I'm more familiar and accustomed
to their material, a creative and well-crafted blend of unusual
elements.
