-G3 featuring Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci and Joe Satriani
The Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA
March 28, 2007

Joe Satriani continues to surprise and astonish guitar enthusiasts
with his sagacious choice of participants in his enduring G3 festival,
this time switching out long-standing cohort Steve Vai with returning
wizard John Petrucci and adding the incredible virtuosity of Paul
Gilbert into the mix. It was Paul who I was most excited to see this
time around, as I'd witnessed the magic of Joe and John on numerous
occasions but had only seen Paul at a guitar clinic many years ago. I
wanted to be surprised by the set lists so I purposefully kept myself
in the dark about what Paul, John and Joe had in store, and believe me
I was blown away in more ways than one! I didn't have to wait long for
an absolutely transcendent example of fretboard mastery as Paul
appeared onstage:

Paul Gilbert

Get Out Of My Yard / Hurry Up / Castle Dragon / Rusty Old Boat /
Radiator / Scarified / Scit Scat Wah / Spaceship One / Twelve Twelve /
solo / To Be With You / Down To Mexico

Paul came out right on time along with none other than Bruce Bouillet,
who acted as the "human capo" while Paul played the title track off
his new solo album GET OUT OF MY YARD. This was truly amazing to watch
as his sound was perfect and his technique was unbelievable! I don't
think I've ever seen anyone play arpeggios better than Paul. Next up
was the Rush inspired track "Hurry Up" and it was great to see Paul
and Bruce playing in tandem, recalling the glorious Racer X days of
SECOND HEAT and LIVE: EXTREME VOLUME. The best was yet to come,
however, as the guys tore into not only the incredible "Scarified" but
also "Scit Scat Wah," a track I didn't think I would ever get to see
performed live! Paul drew heavily from GET OUT OF MY YARD, delivering
white hot versions of "Castle Dragon," "Rusty Old Boat," "Radiator"
and "Twelve Twelve," at all points demonstrating clearly why Joe chose
to include him on the tour. Bruce was excellent all throughout the
show, matching and complementing Paul's fire and precision with
practiced ease. It was funny to see Paul wearing headphones throughout
the set as it reminded me of when Eric Johnson did this on the first
G3 tour. Paul's band also included his wife Emi on keyboards, bassist
Mike Szuter and drummer Jeff Bowders, and they all did an exceptional
job. I really had to pinch myself while I was witnessing this as I
thought I might have been having a really cool dream, but indeed it
was real. Finishing off with uptempo rocker "Down To Mexico," the only
disappointment for me was the length of the set, which clocked in at
around 40 minutes; otherwise I have to say that this was one of my
all-time favorite G3 performances, certainly Paul has to be one of the
most technically proficient players I have ever seen. If you have a
chance I would highly recommend that you see him live, you'll be glad
you did!

John Petrucci

Jaws Of Life / Glasgow Kiss / Lost Without You / Curve / Wishful
Thinking / Damage Control

Next up was John, and the first thing I noticed was his incredible
sound as he had an absolutely fantastic tone! Starting off with "Jaws
Of Life," from his SUSPENDED ANIMATION album, the second thing I
noticed was fellow Dream Theater partner-in-shred Mike Portnoy on
drums! I don't know why this surprised me so much as Mike had played
with him the last time he was on the G3 tour, but I was really
awestruck to see him there, laying down his characteristically
powerful and precise beats. It was cool to see John in a solo context
as I had only seen him with Dream Theater before. John is so highly
skilled it is really hard to pick out one aspect of his playing to
praise, but I must say his use of chromatics, alternate picking and
tapping in just the right combination is one of his many strengths.
The Celtic flavored "Glasgow Kiss" followed with more furious playing,
John effortlessly ripping out lead lines while exceptional bassist
Dave LaRue and that drum monster Mike kept the rhythm solid as well as
interesting. It's fascinating to hear all the different influences
contained in John's playing, such as on "Lost Without You" where he
injects a Jeff Beck/Gary Moore flavor, or on the Satriani-esque
"Curve." Although John didn't have a rhythm guitarist to accompany
him, this wasn't missed as John is so adept at handling both chores in
Dream Theater. Completing his set with the totally killer "Damage
Control," I felt satisfied that I had seen one of the preeminent
shredders of our day in perfect form, and the anticipation of the G3
jam began to take over my thoughts...

Joe Satriani

War / One Big Rush / Flying In A Blue Dream / Cool #9 / Super Colossal
/ Satch Boogie / Circles / Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing / Surfing
With The Alien / Always With Me, Always With You

The place really filled up right before Joe took the stage and
interestingly enough I had the riff from "War" going through my mind
as Joe opened up with that very song and let me tell you he was loud!
A little too loud at times as this caused a somewhat muffled effect
which made it difficult to hear some of the subtleties of Joe's
playing. Joe's set list was representative of what he usually plays
and I was disappointed to hear only one song off his new album SUPER
COLOSSAL, arguably his best album since CRYSTAL PLANET. Still, you
can't beat Joe for totally captivating playing, his touch and tone
right up there with the greats. Joe's band included Dave LaRue who did
double duty on this tour, along with rhythm guitarist Galen Henson and
drummer Jeff Campitelli. Joe always does a great job of entertaining
the crowd and he did so once again on this evening, despite the sound
being a bit "blurry" as I observed in my notes. Very cool to see this
amazing talent once again. John joined Joe as he finished up "Always
With Me, Always With You" followed by Paul and it was clear what was
to happen next...

G3 Jam

Foxey Lady / Purple Haze / Voodoo Chile / Goin' Down / Jumpin' Jack
Flash

Well the time passed too fast and it was already time for the
legendary G3 jam, and in time-honored fashion the guys all came out
and performed a tribute to Hendrix as the first order of business,
positively ripping through "Foxey Lady," "Purple Haze" and a bit of
"Voodoo Chile;" Paul sang the Hendrix songs perfectly and everyone
played like the guitar gods they are, effortlessly trading leads with
creativity and plenty of shred factor. Joe took over vocals for "Goin'
Down" and the show ended with the unusual choice of the Stones'
"Jumpin' Jack Flash," complete with leads I've never heard Keith
Richards play! Great jam, great show overall and something I certainly
hope will be captured for a future DVD release. Sure to be in my list
of best shows of the year, I highly recommend that you attend if at
all possible. Just be ready for a lot of guitar!!!

-Thanks to Nancy Sayle and the G3 cast and crew.
