-Long-time Kiss Fan Jennifer Gregory Wins "Name The King Of All Beasts
Contest"
[Note: This is from the Kiss Comics Group Newsletter. - Tim]
Paul Stanley And Gene Simmons Personally Pick Her Entry. King Of All
Beasts Will Now Be Called Chikara
When long-time Kiss fan, Jennifer Gregory, read the e-mail from
Platinum Studios and the Kiss Comics Group stating that she had won
the contest to name the "Kiss 4K" character, King Of All Beasts, her
co-workers were looking at her very strangely. It was probably because
Jennifer was screaming loudly at her computer.
Jennifer thought that the title to the 1988 Japanese limited edition
compilation album would make a great comic book character name. "I
knew that Chikara meant power and I thought that making that the name
of one of the 'Kiss 4K' characters made sense," said Ms. Gregory.

Saltatio Mortis - Back To The Middle Ages
After the success of their chart album DES KONIGS HENKER, Saltatio
Mortis is finally back in the studio under the supervision of producer
Thomas Heiman-Trosien (In Extremo, Schandmaul). Heavy guitars in
combination with Medieval sounds will define Saltatio Mortis' next
release. Musically and lyrically, the new, untitled album (European
Release Date: 31.08.2007) will perfectly fuse modern times with the
Dark Ages.

Erben Der Schopfung - The Return
For over four years, Erben Der Schopfung kept a low profile, but now
the band formed by Oliver Falk returns with new material and a new
lineup. "The new songs are much heavier and we have focused much more
heavily on the guitars, as well as in using more digital effects. The
new material moves in the direction of Electro/EBM Dark Metal. Plus,
we have added quite a few surprises," says Oliver. The yet untitled
album is currently being recorded in the band's very own studio and
scheduled for a late 2007 release.

Hurtlocker - Thrash Or Be Thrashed
Chicago's Hurtlocker has entered Studio One with Chris Djuricic to
record the follow-up of FEAR AND A HANDFUL OF DUST. Vocalist Grant
Belcher on the new material: "We have lengthier songs and more solos,
but don't worry, it's gonna stay f*cking heavy. We've got more
blastbeats, more aggression, some Grind parts and a sh*tload of
extreme Thrash -- definetely no ballads or cheesy stuff!" The release
date for the new onslaught EMBRACE THE FALL is yet to be confirmed.

Sinamore - New Album
Sinamore is currently working in Soundtrack Studio to record the
successor to A NEW DAY, before July sees its final mastering at
Finnvox Studios (Sentenced, H.I.M.). Band leader Tommi Muhli had this
to say: "I think we've stepped over onto darker ground. The new
material follows the musical direction found on the last tracks that
made their way onto A NEW DAY ("Misery Carnival," "Drama For Two," and
"Fallen"). The songs are deeper, melancholic, powerful, and definately
more Metal than on the previous album." Expect new dark anthems in
autumn 2007.

WeltenBrand - Lineup Additions
WeltenBrand will present itself in the future with no less than THREE
singers. Manja "Tyrae" Gückel will form an extraordinary vocal trio
with Dina Falk and Ritchie Wenawasser. Furthermore, the band is
already working on new material, which willl be heavier than that
heard on THE END OF THE WIZARD, but continue to omit the use of
electric guitars. A string ensemble and a few experimental
arrangements will add to the unique sound. The lyrical subject matter
will find its inspiration in both Glarner's "Book Of Sagas" and the
last European witch burnings that took place in the band's hometown.
Expect this release in early 2008.

Krull: "We are really looking forward to the upcoming concerts in

visit some places where we have never played before with Leaves' Eyes,
and are really excited about that. We should start working on our new
record in the summertime, before playing in the United States and
Canada again. The release of the upcoming CD is planned for 2008, but
we will be releasing the DVD before the new record comes out."

John Macaluso & Union Radio - THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE
Genre - Prog Rock/Metal
Released May 25th 2007
LMC195
EAN6419922001950
John Macaluso is one of rock music's most regarded drummers with a
resume that runs from ARK to Yngwie Malmsteen, with his world class
drumming being found on some 200 releases to date. However, its only
now that John Macaluso has delivered his own project entitled John
Macaluso & Union Radio – THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE which displays his
full versatility as a composer through a collection of 13 tracks that
scream quality from start to finish.
The music of THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE is best described as dark and
moody yet is home to a feast of songs that vary in tempo. Obvious
influences on the sound can be traced to Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.
Yet more significantly drawn from John's travels around the world
studying other cultures music and foreign rhythms. On the albums sound
Macaluso states, "I put all these influences together to form the
writing style. The music is more keyboard heavy, than guitar based and
has a very airy, creepy sound with heavy and sometimes speedy drumming
which is actually relaxing at certain high tempos. It is very cerebral
from feel to sound. The lyrical content is dark as well. There are
stories told all real life but some told in almost fable ways.
Subjects from struggle to Religion, universal, solar system, core of
earth, relationships, anger, joy, drugs, fulfillment and emptiness."
Macaluso's goal with THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE was quite simple: "My
goal in making this album was to make the best album I have ever
played on and I have recorded around 200 albums in my career, so it
wasn't easy. This is why it has taken so long (around 18 months), but
I have done it. This is my best. I wanted to make music that was true
and that I would want to listen too, nothing about following any trend
just real expression using all my influence of life. The main thing I
wanted to accomplish here was to make an album like it was a snap shot
photo of life at the time I was making it. I also wanted to get my
favorite musicians and friends that I have worked with through the
years on it and have a great time making it. I did this all over the
world; I traveled to many different States and Countries to get the
players on the record. It took a lot to do it but the performances
show and it really shows that genuine friends were working on this
record together, you can hear the great time and that the musicians
all rose to the occasion and kicked it for me, I gotta thank them
all!!!
"Lyrical influences come highly from the occult and religion blended
with spirituality and the way I look at everyday life. It might be a
different way of looking at the world but it's the only way I know. I
don't mean Occult and Religion as a corny doom thing or a preacher
man. I am highly influenced in life by the spirit world and the song
lyrics tell stories of events an what ifs."
Favorite moments: "Some are working with my great buddy Vitalij
Kuprij. When we wrote and record the instrumental track 'T-34.' We
spent time at his place in Pennsylvania got on the exact same wave
length and kicked ass on this song. We had an amazing time and it
shines through on the recording, this track turned out to be one of
the best. Also working with Marco Sfogli over in Italy. He lives in a
house where you stand on the balcony and overlook Mt. Vesuvius (the
Pompeii Volcano). How could you not have a new influence when seeing
this everyday. The writing sessions were great and the recording even
better."

Chris Poland - RETURN TO METALOPOLIS LIVE
Genre - Guitar Instrumental
Released May 25th 2007
LMC206
EAN6419922002063
RETURN TO METALOPOLIS was the beginning of Chris Poland's solo career,
after leaving multi-platinum artists, Megadeth, in 1987. The RETURN TO
METALOPOLIS disc has been a cult classic for years, having been
reissued several times worldwide. Lion Music is proud to share with
you the only known live moments on tape from the short-lived tour in
support of this classic release. Recorded live in 1991 at the now
defunct Mason Jar in Phoenix, Arizona, RETURN TO METALOPOLIS LIVE is a
chance for fans to see how this inventive material translated over
into a live situation. The recording is as-is and would be the
beginning of the lineup that progressed into the band Damn The
Machine, who released their self-titled disc in 1993 on A&M Records.
Listening to RETURN TO METALOPOLIS LIVE shows how Chris' playing has
evolved over the years, but it also shows that even back then he was
pushing the boundaries of the guitar, with his trademark cutting tone
and style. In addition to a couple of studio demo outtakes from past
years, we thought it would be cool to include OHM: performing a re-
worked version of the METALOPOLIS classic, "Alexandria." This release
is for the Chris Poland fans that have been so supportive throughout
the years. We hope you enjoy!
"I was pretty young when RETURN TO METALOPOLIS came out, maybe 15 or
16. Back then, before the Internet, a lot of albums came out, and
unless you where lucky and spotted an ad or a review in a magazine,
you'd never know it. One day, a friend of mine put a cassette in the
car player and said 'Guess who this is?' I listened for a few minutes
and said 'Is it Megadeth? Why aren't there any vocals?'
"Megadeth's PEACE SELLS was, and remains, my favourite metal album and
while Chris may not have written anything for that album, you can hear
his stamp on every song, and I guess Dave Mustaine must have
influenced Chris a little bit too. Although I loved his playing on
those first two Megadeth albums, my love affair with Chris Poland
really began with the METALOPOLIS album, an album I still spin
regularly. In retrospect, the album doesn't really sound that much
like Megadeth; instead, it's a quintessential expression of the Chris
Poland sound, which shines through no matter which genre he is
exploring. As I've grown older, my affection for his work and
appreciation for his talent have only increased; through Damn The
Machine, OHM:, and his various solo releases. The quality that truly
sets him apart from other 'guitar hero' types is that he is, first and
foremost, a songwriter. I never cottoned to the Shrapnel school of
metal guitar wankery, because even the best of those releases tended
to be shallow frameworks built to support endless solos, which
themselves all blended together in a neo-classical haze. RETURN TO
METALOPOLIS is not that kind of release, and all things considered,
there aren't even that many solos, only song after song of
breathtaking riffs and brilliant arrangements. When he does take the
lead, Chris plays with an astounding lyricism. His solos become an
inextricable part of the song in the way a vocal melody normally
would. Not many guitarists can play like that, nether mind their
dexterity or speed (neither of which Chris can be said to lack, for
the record). I've had the pleasure of seeing Chris perform live
several times, first with Damn The Machine and then with OHM:, but
unfortunately his U.S. tour in support of METALOPOLIS melted down
before it made it to my town. It's great to finally get to hear this
music played for a crowd, and with Dave Randi on bass, you can start
to hear how Chris got from his first release as a leader in Damn The
Machine, who were formed not too long after Chris, his brother, and
Dave got back from this aborted tour. For many years Chris Poland has
inspired me as a guitarist, as a songwriter, and as a lover of music.
Here's hoping the next 20 years are just as inspiring!"

Tomorrow's Eve - "The Tower"
Genre - Prog Power Metal
Released May 25th 2007
LMC208
EAN6419922002087
Tomorrow's Eve, fresh from the release of their worldwide acclaimed
album MIRROR OF CREATION 2 - GENESIS II in 2006, have recorded a four-
track album to give fans an idea of the direction to expect on their
next full-length album and to also offers fans something special to
celebrate their European tour in support of Circle II Circle
throughout April 2007.
"The Tower" is a four-track single containing new material and early
band material re-recorded to better reflect where the band is at in
2007. It's a single to tease for the upcoming full-length album. The
music on "The Tower" is dark and aggressive with the lyrics like
episodes from "The Twilight Zone," what also will be the concept of
the band's next full-length release. The band are already booked into
SU2 Studios to record the follow-up to MIRROR OF CREATION 2 - GENESIS
II in July.
"The Tower" will be released shortly after the band have completed a
European tour with Circle II Circle and Savage Circus throughout April
'07 performing in Germany, Denmark, Austria, France, Italy, The
Netherlands and Belgium.

-Gold Storm Records Releases Violent Storm's Album STORM WARNING, With
Guests Yngwie Malmsteen And Judas Priest's K.K. Downing, July 27th,
2007, In The U.S.
Executive Produced By K.K. Downing, In This Production Outside Of
Judas Priest
More and more in the early 21st century, newer metal acts seem to be
modeling their sound after the metal masters. And there's a reason why
the debut full length by Violent Storm, STORM WARNING, bears a sonic
resemblance to the aforementioned metal masters -- two of the genre's
most renowned guitarists, Yngwie Malmsteen and Judas Priest's K.K.
Downing, have lent a hand (with the latter also handling Executive
Production duties).
Led by bassist/songwriter Mick Cervino (who has toured alongside
Ritchie Blackmore and Malmsteen), alongside Mike Sorrentino on Drums
(ex-Blackmore's Night), Matt Reardon on Vocals and Martin Mickells on
Guitars, Violent Storm instantly left an impression on Downing.
"There's a lot of bands out there now, but a lot of it is very 'nu
metal' to me. So when I heard Mick's stuff, I thought, 'This is pretty
cool -- it has a freshness about it. Very classic metal.' So I played
a couple of solos and things went on from there. Yngwie played on the
record, and later, I pushed them towards Roy Z to engineer and re-mix
the record from the original. Roy and I were sending files back across
the Atlantic, I actually went there a couple of times -- once to L.A.
and once to Las Vegas -- and hooked up with Roy to listen to some
stuff. And that's how it all happened, really -- I've been involved
ever since."
Although he's appeared on live recordings by Malmsteen (ATTACK!! and
G3 LIVE: ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD) as well as a song on a studio set
by Blackmore's Night (UNDER A VIOLET MOON), Cervino hasn't had the
opportunity to truly show off his bass chops in the studio, until now.
"That's another reason why I needed to do Violent Storm, because I've
got to be able to play the bass on an album sometime!"
The result is a rockin' release that manages to appeal to metalheads
both old and new, explains Cervino. "If you're in an aggressive mood,
you listen to something fast, like 'War No More.' But sometimes you're
more into a melody frame of mind, and you listen to 'Alimentary
Fable.' It really depends on the mood of the day -- and that's what I
intended to do for the listener, so they wouldn't be stuck with one
style that is redundant."
Track listing for STORM WARNING:
1. War No More [Featuring K.K. Downing]
2. Fire In The Unknown [Featuring Roy Z and Yngwie Malmsteen]
3. Deceiver [Featuring K.K. Downing]
4. Pain [Featuring Yngwie Malmsteen]

6. Screaming In Your Face [Featuring Roy Z]

-Pink Floyd's Bass Player Guy Pratt's New Book
Having dallied with Funkapolitan, Pratt suddenly found himself on "Top
Of The Pops" and supporting David Bowie with smooth Australian outfit
Icehouse. At a ludicrously young age he became a sought after bass
player to the stars, finding himself crawling from studio to bar, from
hotel to stadium portacabin with the likes of Robert Palmer, Womack &
Womack, Bernard Edwards, Bryan Ferry and David Crosby. The '80s were
in their prime, and with a number of Crolla-suited appearances in
windswept videos behind him, he was invited to join Pink Floyd for a
series of stadium of extravaganzas to make Bono & Co. look fairly
modest. Pratt has recorded with Madonna, and spent time in the studio
with Michael Jackson. He was in The Smiths for a week, has travelled
through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page, and
has lived to tell all. "My Bass & Other Animals" emerges from the
successful stand-up tour of the same name. It charts his journey from
a Mod band in Southend to playing with Roxy Music at Live 8; it is a
witty and revealing but heartfelt memoir of life at the sharp end of
the music business.

Toronto's Valkyries Cry Play Germany's Swordbrothers Festival On May
19, 2007
The event will take place at Juz in Andernach, Germany, and is the
fifth annual metal festival the Swordbrothers host.
In a time where metal is scarce and seems to be turning into something
else with nu-metal influences and whatever the latest trends may be,
Valkyries Cry brings to the world pure and true metal with no
compromises. The four-piece ensemble is the brutal medieval answer to
nu-metal with strong, clear vocal melodies and blazing guitar riffs.
Singer Dip Evil has an incredible vocal range with hymn like choruses.
Lord Godin plays guitar more powerful than mace and shreds faster than
any warhorse could fly. Bassist Lord Carlos plays so heavy that the
grim reaper himself would tremble, and drummer Speed King Kaveh is
powerful and fast like the sounds of an army charging on the
battlefield. Songs encompass the legends, warriors, myths and stories
from the medieval and dark ages.
Valkyries are the choosers of the slain in Norse Mythology. The true
warriors who die in battle would receive a Valkyrie to take them to
Valhalla. Valkyries Cry are warriors who will fight till the death,
for metal.
Prepare yourselves; strap on your chain mail, Valkyries Cry take the
stage at Swordbrothers Festival at 8:00 p.m. to dish out their
heaviness, power and speed. One listen will give you a dose of the
fury and passion that is Valkyries Cry. With raw energy and a
warrior's attitude, this powerful ensemble will not tame their horses
nor kneel to anyone, but continue to forge their own brand of metal
from the dark ages.

-Tull Acoustic
EMI-CAP is making available THE BEST OF ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL album,
which has a release May 8. The album -- as well as the entire EMI Tull
catalog (29 albums including AQUALUNG, THE VERY BEST OF, THICK AS A
BRICK) -- has been selling quite well on iTunes.
THE BEST OF ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL was compiled by Ian Anderson and
includes 24 tracks representing the band's finest acoustic work across
their 39-year career, including two new live recordings making their
release debut.
While Ian Anderson's flute is one of the most recognizable trademarks
of Jethro Tull's identity, what also distinguishes Tull from most
other bands is the frequent use of a vast array of acoustic
instrumentation. For THE BEST OF ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL's track list,
Anderson selected tracks from the band's best-known acoustic work as
well some of his own personal favorites, presenting a variety of
styles, tempos and moods in chronological order, with the exception of
"Jack Frost," which was recorded in 1982, but not released until 1988.
"The dynamics and juxtaposition of electric with acoustic has been the
inspiration for decades of humble fumbles," says Anderson in THE BEST
OF ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL's liner notes essay. "The hushed playing of an
old Martin guitar or whispered flute in many a hotel and motel room
(lest I annoy my fellow guest and weary traveler) seemed then and now
so simple and natural."
Many Jethro Tull songs feature acoustic instruments alongside their
electric brethren. The song "Aqualung" includes extended acoustic
sections delicately poised in the midst of rock riff mayhem, while on
the THICK AS A BRICK album, there are several interlaced passages of
acoustic guitar-led meanderings.
Mandolins, bouzoukis, balalaika, mouth organ, acoustic piano,
harpsichord, accordion, celeste, glockenspiel, marimba, bongos, tabla,
assorted kit drums and percussion, saxophones, solo violin, acoustic
bass and the perhaps more obvious flutes and whistles have all made
their mark on the Tull and Ian Anderson catalog. Recently, as well as
historically, many instruments of the symphony orchestra have added a
broader, richer color to the songs.
"The subtle slipping and sliding of humanly-executed music from
fretboard and keyboard are still exciting," says Anderson. "The flute,
like the violin, is never going to be perfectly in tune. But the
induced expression, vibrato, tone colors and dynamics are what make it
all come alive."

-The American Black Lung To Release Sophomore Album July 10
It is not often that a band comes along that can be compared to any
number of bands yet embody each of them equally. This is what Tucson's
The American Black Lung brings to the table. The band's sound is part
early Black Flag, part Iggy Pop, part The Bronx, and part The
Hellacopters. "An incendiary mix of hardore, hardrock, with a dollop
of garage rock and a sliver of metal thrown in for good measure," says
All Music Guide. Having recently signed with Laguna Beach's Uprising
Records, The American Black Lung is poised to release their sophomore
effort SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF VULTURES on July 10.
Since forming in 2003, The American Black Lung has toured North
America and Europe numerous times with the likes of MXPX, Further
Seems Forever, and Valient Thor among many others. This summer looks
to be no different as the band will be taking their captivating,
sweat-drenched live show on the road with The Bled and then return to
the Warped Tour for the second year in a row. The American Black Lung
came together as a group of friends looking to pay homage to their
music that has influenced them and molded them into the people they
are today. The band is comprised of Johnny Detroit (guitars), Dusty
Rhoads (bass), Easy E (guitars), W. Moon (drums), and Diamond Rhino
shedding on vocals. With the band's stock already rising steadily,
make no doubt the release of SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF VULTURES will take
The American Black Lung to the next level.

-Byzantine Finishes Tracking Songs For OBLIVION BECKONS
West Virginia's forward-thinking thrashers Byzantine have completed
tracking for the band's forthcoming record, OBLIVION BECKONS, which
will see a September release through Prosthetic Records.
"Well, after four months of holing ourselves up in the studio at 101
Productions, only taking a break to hit the road with God Forbid on
the Chains Of Humanity tour, we have finally finished recording the
tracks for our third album, OBLIVION BECKONS," front man OJ Ojeda
says. "I finished my last vocal track last night and I am happy as
hell with the sounds we have going and the ideas we came up with this
time around. We took a couple different paths on this one, stripping
down some things like the vocals for a more aggressive style and then
going out on a limb on some other things we have never tried before.
This album is more varied than anything we have done prior and,
clocking in at around an hour, should have more than enough metal for
all our friends and fans. This week, [drummer] Wolfe, Aaron [Fischer,
producer] and myself will trek up to Baltimore, Md. to Drew Mazurek's
studio and mix this beast. Look out for a September release. 'Till
then..."
Song listing for OBLIVION BECKONS (in alphabetical order):
Absolute Horizon
All Hail The Endtimes
A Residual Haunting

Receiving End Of Murder
The Gift Of Discernment
OBLIVION BECKONS is the follow-up to 2005's ...AND THEY SHALL TAKE UP
SERPENTS, which received critical acclaim for progressive song
structures and thrash-oriented musicianship. Byzantine recently
released the band's debut DVD, SALVATION, last month and features the
exclusive unveiling of "Cradle Song," a never-before recorded track
from early in the band's career. Only available on the DVD, "Cradle
Song" will not appear on the forthcoming OBLIVION BECKONS, and rounds
out the DVD's tracking which also includes a live performance film,
bootleg performances, behind the scenes footage, interviews and the
music video for "Jeremiad," a track from ...AND THEY SHALL TAKE UP
SERPENTS. "Cradle Song" is now also available exclusively on iTunes at

wait for a tepid rocker like that.
"Ten years of meticulous studio noodling and knob-twiddling should
render a song so rock-tacular that I should instantly lose bowel/
sphincter control upon the initial listening.

*** FROM THE MEGA-VAULT ***
*
by Keith Abt (KeithAbt@...)
-This week: EXTRAS AND ERRORS...
Good morning, afternoon, or evening (depending on when you're reading
this), fellow headbangers, and welcome to another edition of "From The
Mega-Vault," the column that may be infrequent, but is still a heck of
a lot of fun! Let's get right to the goodies...
...As I'm sure most of you have noticed, Detritus' entire review staff
has been VERY busy these past few weeks, tearing through a heap of the
very cool Roadrunner Records classic catalog reissues, released by
Poland's Metal Mind Productions. (I myself reviewed Atrophy's
SOCIALIZED HATE and VIOLENT BY NATURE in last week's issue, and if my
time management skills don't completely fail me, you should be seeing
my take on three CDs by Sadus at the tail end of this issue.) I've got
to give the Metal Mind folks some serious props for the neat-o
packaging on these reissues; all of the discs are housed in very slick
looking "digi-pak" cases, each includes a full booklet loaded with
lyrics and informative liner notes, and the gold colored CDs are
certainly eye catching. The fact that each reissue is strictly limited
to 2,000 copies worldwide also means that they're likely to become hot
collectibles in the near future. However, when I actually sat down and
started LISTENING to these discs to prepare my reviews, a few bugs
popped up, so today I'd like to raise a few red flags and shout "BUYER
BEWARE!" about several of the titles in this series...
First let me explain the unusual occurrence with the Atrophy CDs: on
the same day I received the package of Metal Mind reissues from Tim, I
had to go for a drive so I grabbed the stack of discs to listen to in
the car. I popped Atrophy's SOCIALIZED HATE into my car stereo, and
the disc began to play track #1 (which was supposed to be "Chemical
Dependency"), yet I heard...absolutely nothing. After listening to
about a minute and a half of silence I finally went "what the heck?"
and skipped to track #2...which turned out to be "Chemical
Dependency!" So track #1, for whatever reason, consisted of "dead
air." I thought that was a little weird, but decided that I could deal
with it after a quick scan thru the rest of the tracks, since the
album WAS complete -- it went all the way to track #14, so all of the
13 songs listed on the back cover were present and accounted for, plus
the "dead air" first track. After listening to a bit of SOCIALIZED
HATE I popped that one out and threw in VIOLENT BY NATURE... and
AGAIN, track #1 was totally blank! The album didn't actually begin
till track #2! By this point, of course, I was going, "What the f**k?"
I now began to wonder if this "empty first track" phenomenon was some
kind of weird defect unique to the Atrophy CDs or if it affected any
others in the series, so just for comparison's sake I took that CD out
and replaced it with one of the three Sadus discs, which played
normally. (Or so I THOUGHT anyway... more on that in a few minutes!).
So what's up with the "empty" leadoff track on each of the Atrophy
discs? I mentioned the problem on a couple of the message boards I
frequent, and a friend (who also happens to run a small indie label)
theorized that if there was a multi-media section on the CDs (which
there is; each CD contains a bonus video clip), then the discs
should've been pressed as "mixed-mode" CDs instead of "enhanced multi
session" (whatever that means), otherwise most CD players will read
the video section as an audio track. He said that some newer CD
players may be able to tell the difference between the two sections
and will not play the "dead air" track, but obviously my car stereo
and the boom box on my desk at work are not hip enough to understand
such high technology. As long as you remember to skip directly to
track #2 whenever you put these CDs in your player, though, you will
still be able to obtain maximum thrashing enjoyment from the Atrophy
reissues. :)
When I moved on to the Sadus CDs (of which I received three: CHEMICAL
EXPOSURE, SWALLOWED IN BLACK, and A VISION OF MISERY), I discovered an
even MORE embarrassing error. After a few spins of A VISION OF MISERY,
I noticed that according to the track counter on my CD player, there
were 13 songs on the disc, even though there are only 11 tracks listed
in the CD booklet and on the disc itself. At first I wondered if
perhaps there were a few extra songs included that weren't listed on
the cover, but then I tried listening to the CD with the lyric sheet
in my hand I realized that the lyrics I was hearing sounded absolutely
NOTHING like what I was reading in the booklet. So on a whim, I popped
in the SWALLOWED IN BLACK disc, which lists 13 songs on the back cover
and on the CD, but my CD player said there were only 11 tracks on it.
(Are you starting to see where I'm going with this?) Still holding the
lyric booklet to A VISION OF MISERY in my hand, I pressed "play" on
SWALLOWED IN BLACK... and yup, believe it or not, the discs are mis-
labeled. The CD marked A VISION OF MISERY has the SWALLOWED IN BLACK
album on it, and vice versa. You gotta be KIDDING me!! Who the hell
pressed these things, and didn't they bother to proof them before
packaging?? After that I was almost afraid to pop in the CHEMICAL
EXPOSURE CD because for all I knew, there could've been an entirely
different band/album on it, but fortunately once I spun that one I was
able to ascertain that the disc does indeed contain the CHEMICAL
EXPOSURE album. That was certainly a relief, because I was already
confused enough!! Once again, I mentioned this goof on a couple of
message boards, and another person informed me that he, too, had
gotten an "error copy" of SWALLOWED IN BLACK but was able to return it
to the store in exchange for the right CD. So apparently the folks at
Metal Mind ARE indeed aware that a mistake was made and they're on top
of it. As for me, I am not particularly worried about getting
replacements for the Sadus discs since I DID receive them as freebies,
after all. (Part of me can't help but wonder if the label decided to
pass off the error copies on wanna-be journalists such as myself, just
to see if we were paying attention?) I've now tucked the Sadus CDs
into the correct cases, so that when I do get around to writing their
reviews, at least I'll be sure that I'm writing about the right album.
Another thought... if I list these CDs on eBay a few years from now as
"ULTRA MEGA HYPER RARE ERROR PRESSINGS," would I be able to send my
son to college on the earnings? :)
...Staying on the reissue topic (yet moving to less error-filled
pastures)... don'cha just LOVE it when an amazing band simply drops
into your lap out of nowhere? Sometime last year, a message board
buddy of mine from France turned me on to an excellent-but-forgotten
Canadian metal band called Zion's Abyss. (Merci, Christophe!) The lone
Zion's Abyss album, TALES (or possibly T.A.L.E.S.) was only released
on cassette in 1991, and though I'd never heard of the band before, my
friend was so sure that they'd be up my alley that he e-mailed me MP3s
of all of the songs, ripped from his original tape. The sound quality
from the cassette rip wasn't the greatest of course, but the songs --
a simply fantastic blend of Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Judas Priest,
and Crimson Glory -- knocked me over on the first listen. After
hungrily devouring these tunes for several months, I was thrilled to
hear that TALES was about to receive a long-overdue re-mastering and
CD release (limited to 1,000 copies, plus another 330 on vinyl LP) on
the tiny-but-true Greek indie label Steel Legacy Records. I got my CD
copy about two weeks ago and I haven't been able to pry it out of my
player since then. Tracks like "Scarred For Life," "Running Out Of
Time," and "Sorrow On The Horizon" are classy, powerful and most
importantly, catchy as hell. TALES sounds like it could've been a
long-lost cousin to Crimson Glory's TRANSCENDENCE. No kiddin'!! If
this sounds interesting to you, I suggest you visit Steel Legacy's Web
site or contact your favorite underground metal distribution service
very quickly, as I'll bet those 1,000 copies will not be around for
long! On a side note, my French friend happens to be good buddies with
Zion's Abyss bassist Mike Plummer, so if all goes according to plan,
you may be seeing some Q&A about the band with Mike in this space very
soon.
...Another true metal oldie but goodie unearthed by the Steel Legacy
crew is METAL FROM ABOVE by Cross, a mid-'80s Christian metal band
from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cross' five-song METAL FROM ABOVE demo
was originally released in 1986, and is now being released on CD
(again, limited to 1,000 copies, plus 330 on vinyl) for the first time
ever, with a batch of previously-unreleased live tracks as bonuses.
The production here is much rougher than on the Zion's Abyss material,
but in my book it merely heightens the nostalgic vibe. Cross' tunes
were much grittier heavier than many of their mid-'80s Christian metal
contemporaries; I hear a lot of Iron Maiden, early Fates Warning, and
a touch of vintage Metallica in these epic tales of the clash between
good and evil. The live songs, unfortunately, leave much to be
desired, sounding as if they were recorded by someone in the crowd
holding up a Walkman. That aside, diehard Christian metal collectors
(i.e., fans of Barren Cross, Jacobs Dream, Recon, and other God-
fearing heavy-hitters of the late '80s) should enjoy taking a trip
down metal memory lane with METAL FROM ABOVE (which, by the way, also
has absolutely fabulous cover artwork!)
For more info on the TALES or METAL FROM ABOVE CDs and other Steel
Legacy reissues, visit http://www.steel-legacy.com/ .
...OK, I think that's enough metallic mayhem for this installment.
Remember, heavy metal always sounds best when played at maximum
volume, with a beer in one hand and something barbecued in the other,
so eat, drink, and enjoy!!

-Not much to say myself, but here are two items from PR goddess Anne
Leighton, http://www.anneleighton.com/ .
...Recently there was an increase for what internet radio stations pay
to ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. That's fantastic to help artist royalties.
However this action hurts the very independent broadcasters, who have
limited funds in general, but would like to express themselves and
play music they like. Some of these independent broadcasters also have
aspirations to get into professional radio, and therefore are making
great sacrifices already by trying to create their own opportunities
and help up and coming bands. With established stations refusing to
give them air shifts, the added demand for royalties is just another
slap in the face to these people, who believe in the medium of radio.
These independent broadcasters might have less than a hundred regular
listeners, so ad time is out of the question. In general, they are
doing this work because they love music and radio. And they do a good
job exposing music, some interview upcoming artists which gives them
exposure.
For these reasons, I hope everyone can sign a petition to help these
very independent radio stations called Save the Internet Radio, and
it's at:
http://www.petitiononline.com/SIR2007r/petition.html
...I'm calling for volunteer writers, to contribute articles for a
book called "Profiles In Courage" for the Station Family Fund (
http://www.stationfamilyfund.org/ ). "Profiles" will show how
survivors of the 2003 fire at a rock club in Providence, RI are
dealing with their lives. Every writer would be contributing efforts
of interviewing a survivor, and then writing an article, supplying
their notes, and finally approving edited copy, and the final galley.
This would take about 10 to 15 hours of work. The goal is to give all
the publishing money -- minus photographer's and makeup people's pay
-- to the Station Family Fund, which goes entirely to help the
survivors with medical and living costs. If you're interested in being
a writer for the book, please let me know. I'll be working on a book
proposal and will include your name in it, if you would like.

FRANCESCO FARERI - SECRETS WITHIN (C+/C) Lion Music, 2007

Francesco Fareri's third solo release SECRETS WITHIN seems to be
Fareri's attempt to broaden his horizons a bit, separating the album
into electric and acoustic segments. The first part is entitled "Into
The Dark Line," and finds the Italian shredder back to lots of
familiar ground, with songs such as the title track, "The Waves" and
"Liquid World" featuring plenty of fast double-bass drumming,
energetic keyboards, popping bass and warp-speed lead guitar all
apparently in competition to see who can reach the finish line first.
It's all very standard, heard-it-all before stuff and honestly I'm
giving Francesco points for trying -- because he really does try hard
to measure up to his shred influences -- but I really believe he needs
a serious rethink on future releases. If it were me, I'd start by
overhauling the guitar tone, technique and style, as unfortunate use
of effects, undisciplined speed playing and often overlong,
directionless pieces really detract from what I think the goal is
here. Francesco probably gets closest to what he is trying to do with
"Lies," a dramatic track that utilizes keyboards to strong effect and
contains some of his best shred playing. Second section "Out Of The
Dark Line" contains some interesting juxtaposition between piano and
acoustic on tracks like "Parallel Lives" and "Masquerade" but quickly
gets tedious on "Undefined." Overall the best thing I can say about
part one is that it would make a good soundtrack for a video game
(seriously) and part two has some pleasant segments that show strong
potential. Ultimately SECRETS WITHIN is better than Fareri's last
album FORBIDDEN DIMENSION, especially in the area of composition and
production, and that shows growth and promise. Hopefully the promise
will be fully realized on release number three...

MASSIMO IZZIZZARI - UNSTABLE BALANCE (B+) Lion Music, 2007

Italian guitarist Massimo Izzizzari has released what could very well
be the missing Greg Howe album in UNSTABLE BALANCE, a ripping good CD
full of engaging jazz-fusion flavored instrumentals and Massimo's near
flawless technique. The title track starts things off strong with a
killer groove, the rhythm ably provided my Massimo's brother Azeglio
on drums and Mario Guarini handling bass. You don't have to look far
to find a standout track, as there really isn't a bad one in the lot,
Massimo always impressing with great chops, tasty phrasing and an ear
for a cool arrangement on pieces like the melodic "Television Man,"
funky and hard rockin' "Violation Of Privacy" (with brother Giuliano
on bass), and the delightful "Take It Or Leave It." Massimo often gets
a little too close to Greg's style and that's my only complaint about
UNSTABLE BALANCE -- just the need to establish a unique identity.
Massimo's original voice will surely come in time, however, and as
instrumental guitar releases go, UNSTABLE BALANCE is about as good a
one as you are likely to hear this year, so let me recommend it to you
right now!

When listening to Sadus, the first words that come to my mind are
"controlled chaos." This trio of underrated Californian tech-thrashers
could definitely whip up a frenzy back in their heyday, which I
witnessed firsthand one night in 1990 when I caught Sadus as the
opening act for Sepultura and Obituary. One thing I will always
remember about that night was the unhinged onstage performance of
guitarist/vocalist Darren Travis, who stood at center stage spitting
out lyrics at a million miles an hour with a hateful snarl and an
absolutely possessed, bug-eyed expression on his face. My friends and
I thought "Damn, that dude looks like he's gonna have a stroke right
up there on stage!" Seemingly feeding off of the carnage going on in
the audience that night, Sadus crushed everything in their path,
slamming out their short set with admirable stop-on-a-dime technical
precision. Their three CDs for the Roadrunner label -- SWALLOWED IN
BLACK (originally released in 1990), CHEMICAL EXPOSURE (a repackaged
version of the band's self-released, cassette-only ILLUSIONS debut,
issued on the band's own label in 1988 and then given the Roadrunner
treatment in 1991) and A VISION OF MISERY (originally released in
1992), are now back in circulation as part of Metal Mind Productions'
series of limited-edition gold-plated classic reissues, and after
listening to these three discs for the first time in umpteen years (my
brother was the major Sadus fan in our family and he used to listen to
them daily back when these releases were current), the only thing I
can say is "F**K, these guys are FAST!" Actually, "fast" doesn't even
really begin to cover it. This band was about as extreme as you could
get in the early '90s, blurring the lines between thrash's technical
musicianship and the sledgehammer brutality of the burgeoning death
metal scene. (In fact, Sadus' well traveled bassist Steve DiGiorgio
was quite the death metal dude, having done time in Death and Autopsy
before moving on to more recent, higher-profile gigs with Testament,
Iced Earth, DragonLord, and ... Sebastian Bach??) If Travis had opted
for a deeper, growling vocal style, Sadus probably would've been
considered a straight-up death metal band (and they probably would've
sold more records), but instead he stuck to a throaty, snarling,
splatter-punk delivery, punctuated by occasional insane screeches.
Musically, Sadus were akin to playing a Kreator album at 78 speed,
having more in common with the more extreme European thrashers than
with any of the bands in their Bay Area home base. Hyperspeed stuff
like this always runs the risk of becoming a confused mess but Sadus
always managed to stay locked together and remain tight as hell, which
I'm sure was not an easy task!. Fueled by hemp (If memory serves,
Sadus' rallying cry back then was "Smoke more OB's!") and a general
hatred for mankind, CHEMICAL EXPOSURE a.k.a. ILLUSIONS is the rawest
sounding of these three discs and contains some of their most
legendary songs, like the brutal "Sadus Attack" (Travis' scream of
"AAAAAAA-TAAAAACK!" here will peel the skin off your face!) and
"Torture," which features the immortal lyrics "We need D.T.P., Death
To Posers is what I mean!" Can I get a hell yeah on that one?
SWALLOWED IN BLACK (which, by the way, has one of the coolest CD
covers in thrash/death metal history, hands down) continues the light-
speed mayhem with a bigger production but absolutely no alterations to
the Sadus sound, best represented by blistering tracks like "Black"
and "Good Rid'nz," but my personal favorite of the trio is 1992's A
VISION OF MISERY, which finds the band stretching into even MORE
complex territory (if that's even possible!), and even pulling the
throttle back on occasion by inserting some slow doomy bits and mid-
paced mosh parts into tracks like "Through The Eyes Of Greed," "Valley
Of Dry Bones," "Machines" and the awesome, epic-length "Facelift."
Like all of the Metal Mind/Roadrunner reissues, each of these albums
has been beefed up with several bonus tracks on each disc (two per
album, drawn from the band's '86 DEATH TO POSERS and '87 CERTAIN DEATH
demos) and thorough liner notes and lyrics, including some notes from
Steve DiGiorgio himself. I'd recommend A VISION OF MISERY as the cream
of the crop but you can't really go wrong with any of these three CDs
if you're in the mood for some absolutely bestial, cranium-crushing,
poser-killing classic thrash. The band sum it up nicely in the lyrics
to "Kill Team" -- "We're all insane, so f**k you if you don't like the
way we play!" Amen!!

TISHAMINGO - THE POINT (B+/B) Magnatude Records, 2007

Athens, Georgia based Tishamingo administer a satisfying dose of
southern rock and blues on their second album THE POINT. Starting the
disc off with the excellent "Get On Back," the band alternate between
gritty hard rockers such as "Are We Rollin'," heartfelt ballads like
"Mitchell," and the country-flavored "Walkin' Shoes" with equal
dexterity. Obviously influenced by the expected southern rock
heavyweights, radio-ready songs like "Bad News" and "This Time"
suggest that Tishamingo have as much in common with The Eagles, Steve
Miller and The Rolling Stones as they do with The Allman Brothers,
Gov't Mule and Lynyrd Skynyrd. One of the highlights of the disc is
"Hard Fall," a moody rocker that smolders with bluesy passion.
Producer John Kurzweg should be credited for bringing out a great
performance, and the recording sounds fantastic. Recommended for fans
of potent southern rock that delivers the goods without overwhelming
the listener, I look forward to seeing these guys live as I'm betting
their brand of music is particularly well suited for the stage.
