-Joey Belladonna: The Voice Of Anthrax

Joey Belladonna, former lead singer and voice of New York based thrash
metal band Anthrax, is ready to hit the road solo with a new
powerhouse backing band. After a very successful 18 month worldwide
reunion tour with Anthrax, Belladonna felt "It was time to embark on a
solo tour and play my favorite Anthrax and the best of my solo songs
for the fans."

Belladonna who has sold millions of albums worldwide and has toured
extensively across the world with his former band Anthrax, will embark
on a worldwide tour this summer that will extend into the New Year.
The tour will bring Belladonna across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and
Europe with other countries to be announced.

With several projects in the works, Belladonna is gearing up to re-
release his first solo album and record a new album. With some songs
already laid down, Belladonna is currently writing and recording in
his downtime between shows. This will be his first official release
since 1998's SPELLS OF FEAR.

Belladonna has recently signed with Coallier Entertainment who also
handles Sebastian Bach, W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister, Foreigner, and

Svartsot - Danish Folk-Metal Dynamite

With Svartsot, one of Denmark's most promising bands has joined the
Napalm Records roster of artists. The Danes have already made a name
for themselves in the underground scene with their unique brand of
Nordic Folk Metal that combines Black Metal influences and lyrics
inspired by Scandinavian folklore and mythology. Svartsot will enter
the studio in July 2007 with producer Jacob Hansen (TYR). The to-date
untitled debut is scheduled for a tentative November '07 release. Fans
of bands such as TYR ( http://www.tyr.net/ ), Amon Amarth, or
Ensiferium will not be disappointed.

Isole - Atmospheric Doom From Sweden

Swedish band Isole has wholeheartedly dedicated themselves to Doom
Metal. Their as-yet-untitled Napalm Records debut will be recorded in
July in their very own Studio Apocalypse. Isole are working with clean
vocals, slo-mo grooves, and melodies in the minor keys to achieve a
dark atmosphere. Isole is sure to appeal to fans of bands such as
Candlemass, Solitude Aeternus, or early Anathema and My Dying Bride.

Sweden's Electric Earth has been voted as one of the Top 20 bands in
the Earthshaker Contest! The Winner will get the opening slot (playing
on the main stage) at this year's Earthshaker Festival, which takes
place Thursday 19th of July. You can help the band (which is one of

Electric Earth saw the release of their second CD VOL II - WORDS
UNSPOKEN, their first on Belgium's classic metal label Mausoleum
Records, in Sweden April 20 and in the rest of Europe a few weeks
later. The album, which was recorded in Studio Bohus together with
producer Roberto Laghi (Mustasch, Hardcore Superstar, Freak Kitchen
and The Awesome Machine) and comes in a nice looking digi-pak, will be
released in America in the beginning of October.

The band's SELLING SOULS EP, which features the two newly-recorded,
non-album tracks "Bring On The Storm" and "Unicorn" as well as two
covers featuring special guests (Mattias "Ia" Eklundh from Freak
Kitchen plays a blinding solo on Kiss' "I Want You" and Clawfinger's
front man Zak Tell leaves his personal mark on Led Zeppelin's
"Heartbreaker"), is now available from CD Baby (

The EP, which was recorded together with Impious mastermind Valle
Adzic at his Studio Deadline, is also available directly from the band

This performance was captured on the American leg of the 1989 world
tour and finds the band performing not only material from the self-
titled album but also classic material from Yes including "Starship
Trooper," "Close To The Edge" and also "And You And I." Now on DVD,
this magnificent fan favorite comes complete with the original Roger
Dean artwork, a beautiful DVD photo booklet, and new sleeve notes.
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe made up of four-fifths of the classic
Yes lineup from the Seventies. Put together by Jon Anderson, the band
recorded one self-titled album released in 1989, and then embarked on
an extensive and hugely successful worldwide tour filmed here.

This amazing performance captured by German Television's premier rock
show production team has rarely been seen until now. Formed in 1969 by
the guitarist Leslie West and bassist/producer Felix Pappalardi,
Mountain became one of the highest grossing rock acts on the music
scene between the years 1969 and 1972. Sadly, Pappalardi died in 1983.
In 1985 the band reformed and were asked to play on the Deep Purple
European tour. This DVD was filmed in front of a massive and hugely

In 1998, Iced Earth released an album called SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY

-Akashic's Guitarist Posts Video Of South American Guitar Masters

Marcos De Ros, guitarist of the progressive metal band Akashic, toured
in Argentina in May, playing 15 shows with the guitarist Pablo Soler.

almost 50 minutes, having a local guitarist to make the opening show
and in the end the three musicians made a jam session.

-Automatic -- featuring singer Jesse "Jon Doe" Taylor, guitarists
Adrian "Fuser" Tonceanu and Lenny "Lenny Money" Gontcharov, bassist

released a five-song EP called CERTIFIED FOR MURDER. The band is

-Death Angel front man Mark Osegueda was recently injured while
recording for his other group, All Time Highs, in Berkeley, CA.
According to a report from the band, Osegueda "was rushed to the
emergency room after passing out in a vocal booth. While screaming
Mark fell forward into a microphone stand that had neither a mic or
mic clip on it. The pole went into his eye. He was rushed to the
hospital shortly after." Amazingly, "no serious injuries occured,"
save for "a torn eyeball." Osegueda will reportedly recuperate in the
mountains of Idaho.

-King Diamond has postponed his fall European tour due to his being
diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back. As of now no U.S. tour

-I haven't had time to fully research this yet but check this AP
tidbit I got from the Chicago Tribune's Sports section:

"Boston [Red Sox] pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is releasing a music album
of his favorite songs. EMI Music Marketing announced Tuesday the
upcoming album MUSIC FROM THE MOUND will be released July 17. It will
be distributed by EMI in the U.S. and Toshiba/EMI in Japan. MOUND
features a compilation of Matsuzaka's favorite and inspirational songs
from various American, English and Japanese recording artists. The
album also features the new original track 'Gyro Ball,' which includes
guest performances from former J. Geils' harmonica player Magic Dick,
former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt as well as Red Sox
television announcers Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy."

Whoa... Nuno has resurfaced...on *this*?! Yes I know Extreme was based
out of Boston but this just seems weird. Could be cool, but I figured
if any '80s metal guitarist was going to be on a project like this,
it'd be Marty Friedman since his connections to the Japanese music
world are very well known.

Plus, it's *got* to be quality if Magic Dick is involved, right? :)
Don't laugh -- I like the J. Geils Band and I used to think the videos
with Magic Dick playing his super-tiny saxophone were awesome.

-This is kinda funny... My dad got to work early the other day and as
he rounded the corner of the building he saw a lady tossing stuff in
his building's dumpster. She got spooked and took off, so he went to
investigate. He found she had left behind two big boxes of vinyl
records! He sifted through them and found stuff from Kiss, Aerosmith,
and Twisted Sister, among others, and -- get this -- his 16-year-old
part-time co-worker immediately offered him $50 for the whole lot. My
dad figured he'd hold off and run it all by my brother and me to see
if there was anything truly valuable in the pile. I hope to check it
out this weekend. Stay tuned...

I believe this is Razorback's second album, following 2004's ANIMAL
ANGER, and it's a grower that ultimately turns out to be a very
strong, consistent borderline hard rock/heavy metal album. Vocalist
Stefan Berggren (The Company Of Snakes, Snakes In Paradise, M3), main
man/guitarist Rolf Munkes (Vanize, Empire), and bassist/guitarist
Chris Heun (Shylock) are now joined by powerhouse drummer Mike Terrana
(Masterplan, Axel Rudi Pell, Rage, Metalium, etc.) and they combine to
forge a subtly blues-based sound with occasionally Dokkenish melodies
and tried-and-true hard rock sensibilities. Hooks abound in songs like
the expertly building "Line Of Fire," the driving rocker "The Last Man
Standing," the slinky "Take Me To The Other Side," the smoky "Let Me
Give My Lovin'," and the background vocal-fueled title track. Munkes
sure knows how to come up with tasty riffs and licks, Terrana does his
spoken word thing on "The Faint Distant Bell Ring (Intro)" (shades of
Metalium!), and Berggren's voice -- which gets surprisingly husky on
closer "Razor Blues" -- is in league with the Tony Martins of the hard
rock world. Give Razorback a chance and the band won't disappoint.

Rat Skates (a.k.a. Lee Kundrat) is best known as the original drummer
of Jersey thrash legends Overkill. Rat abruptly left that band in 1987
after touring for their classic second album, TAKING OVER, and then
seemingly vanished off the face of the Earth for almost two decades.
So where has he been all this time? It seems Rat married his
girlfriend Lori (Overkill's former merch-table girl!) and together
they have gone into independent film and video production. Rat had a
hand in the hotly-anticipated "Get Thrashed" documentary that is
racking up awards on the indie-film festival circuit (and will be
released on DVD later this year), and he's also just released his own
DVD detailing the formative years of the Thrash Metal movement as seen
through his own eyes, BORN IN THE BASEMENT. It's kinda like a homemade
"Behind The Music: Overkill," but with a more personal touch than
you'd get from one of those sterilized VH1 productions. Rat (still
long haired and old school to the bone!) is the good-humored host and
narrator of BORN IN THE BASEMENT and we join him as he tells the story
of Overkill's early days, going all the way back to their roots in Rat
and Carlo Verni's high school punk band "The Lubricunts." (Carlo
eventually became D.D. Verni, of course. Wait'll you see the Afro he
sports in his high school yearbook photo... Bwahahahahaha!!) During
their Lubricunts period, Rat and Verni gained their first on-stage
experience and Rat learned about the D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) punk
spirit of self-promotion and marketing that would serve him well when
the band eventually revamped its lineup, changed its name to Overkill,
and "went Metal," borrowing bits and pieces from such Tri-State Area
favorites as the Ramones, Twisted Sister, The Misfits, The Dead Boys,
and The Dead End Kids along the way to becoming one of the premier
Thrash Metal outfits in the world. One thing I was surprised to learn
from BORN IN THE BASEMENT was how integral Rat Skates was in getting
that band's name around in their unsigned days. You rarely think of
the drummer as being the "go-to" guy in a band, but Rat lived,
breathed, and busted his ass for Overkill 24/7 in those days!! He
(with then-girlfriend Lori) designed Overkill's logo, silk-screened
the band's first T-shirts, copied and mailed out thousands of demo
tapes and press kits, filled merchandise orders, and designed
backdrops and stage props, all on a shoestring budget! When you see
some of the early live footage of the band, it's amazing to think that
their impressive, professional looking castle-and-dungeon styled drum
riser and back line was made up of milk crates covered in homemade
Styrofoam "bricks," or that the gigantic "OVERKILL" logo at the back
of the stage was made by Rat himself with magic markers, scissors, and
a LOT of patience! In addition to those amazingly cool live videos of
Overkill in their formative years (when they were a bit more, shall we
say, "theatrical" looking than they are now...) you'll see more killer
photos of the other early thrash bands that played in Rat's stomping
grounds back then. The shots of Venom, Anvil, Metallica, Slayer and
many others playing at such long-gone Tri-State Area dives as the
Showplace in Dover, NJ, Club 516 in Old Bridge, NJ, and the Paramount
Theater on Staten Island, NY (or hanging out at Rock N Roll Heaven in
Clark, NJ, the metal record store owned by Megaforce Records honcho
John Zazula) are worth the price of admission all by themselves! The
overwhelming feeling I got from BORN IN THE BASEMENT was how much fun
(and hard work) it must've been to get a band off the ground in the
midst of the early '80s thrash metal explosion. (Sadly, even though
I've lived in New Jersey for my whole life, I was a mere pre-teenager
at the time so I didn't get to experience the thrash movement till it
was already in full swing...) It's fascinating stuff for an old school
metal trivia geek like myself, although I will admit there were a few
moments where I found myself thinking "Careful with that ego, Rat
boy!" My favorite "ego moment" came right towards the beginning of the
video when a photo montage of all these Founding Fathers of Thrash
pops up and Rat puts himself right in the middle of guys like Dave
Mustaine, Scott Ian, Kerry King, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, etc.,
etc. ... OK, so I'll grant that Rat was around when the whole thrash
thing started, but does he really see HIMSELF in the same light as
those guys?? With all due respect, Rat, you never hear anyone say
"Yea, sure, Dave Lombardo was great back in the day, but how 'bout
that Rat Skates guy, huh?" Of course, since this is Rat's own video,
it's HIS viewpoints and opinion, though I'm sure if you asked Bobby
"Blitz" Ellsworth or D.D. Verni about certain pivotal moments in
Overkill history, their takes on things would probably be quite
different than some of Rat's. It would've been a nice touch to see
either of those guys make an appearance in this documentary, but from
what I gather it didn't end well between them when Rat left the band
so there's probably still some bad blood there. On the whole, however,
Rat's DVD is fascinating viewing and it makes for a nice companion
volume to Overkill's BATMEN: THE RETURN documentary that was included
on the WRECKING EVERYTHING live DVD, because it filled in a lot of
blanks about Overkill's early history. I have been an Overkill
fan(atic) since the FEEL THE FIRE days and I thought I knew everything
about the band, but I learned a few new things from BORN IN THE
BASEMENT!! Don't skip over the bonus features on this DVD, by the way,
because you'll miss out on even MORE cool stuff, like the interviews
with Lubricunts vocalist Billy Vector (abso-f**kin-lutely hilarious!!)
and original Overkill guitarist Riff Thunder (no kidding), some clips
from an unfinished Overkill video documentary from 1986 ("Escape From
Stalag 13"), the unsigned Overkill playing live and being interviewed
on a New York City public-access cable music show ("Rock Pipeline") in
1984, and tons more... I usually ignore the bonus features on DVDs but
I've actually watched some of this stuff more than once! I guess it's
pretty obvious by now that I loved this video, huh? If I haven't made
it abundantly clear by now, BORN IN THE BASEMENT is well worth
checking out if you've ever been an Overkill fan or if you grew up in
the New York/New Jersey area during the '80s...or both, like me.

The parade of '80s metal DVDs continues -- thanks, Rhino! -- with this
fantastic collection from Dee Snider & Company. The two main sections
of the disc are THE VIDEO YEARS, featuring all the band's promo video
clips, and STAY HUNGRY, the first-time-on-DVD release of the band's
old MTV concert special. The video clips section includes the seven
videos most old-timers like me have already seen -- "You Can't Stop
Rock 'N' Roll," "We're Not Gonna Take It," "I Wanna Rock," "The
Price," "Leader Of The Pack," the banned-from-MTV "Be Chrool To Your
Scuel" (which also features a guest spot from Alice Cooper), and "Hot
Love" -- plus one ancient gem I'd never even heard of before: a cover
of the Stones' "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (But I Like It)" originally
filmed live for British TV show "The Tube." This thing is mint-plus
quality and features Motorhead's Lemmy and Brian "Robbo" Robertson
jumping onstage for guest spots. (According to the accompanying
interview footage, Atlantic Records signed the band based on its
three-song performance for this "Tube" show.) The rest of the videos
are full of what you remember. Save for "The Price's" fairly
straightforward performance clip, you get oodles of cartoonish
violence and tomfoolery, plus some of the best gratuitous TNA ever in
"Hot Love." (People are talking about Lordi these days -- check out
the "Be Chrool To Your Scuel" video's direct inspiration for a *lot*
of Lordi's video work to date.) The live concert special is also
fantastic quality, with this track list: "The Kids Are Back," "We're
Not Gonna Take It," "I Wanna Rock," "Under The Blade," "The Beast,"
"You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll," "The Price," "Stay Hungry," "Burn In
Hell," "S.M.F." Oddly, the promo videos for "We're Not Gonna Take It"
and "You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll" are shown instead of the live
performances -- they really must have been pushing these videos back
when this concert first aired! The gem of a show was filmed before a
huge crowd in California (fun to see the vintage Black 'N Blue and
Blue Oyster Cult T-shirts in the house!) and it's an excellent
statement to the appeal of Twisted's simple yet powerful music --
despite the imagery and funny videos they were a great, wild live
band. The DVD also includes extensive interview clips where all
members from the classic lineup (and yes, Mark "The Animal" Mendoza is
still bitter about a lot of things), record company and management
folks, Lemmy, and actor Mark "Neidermeyer" Metcalf, star of the "We're
Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock" videos, talk about each video
clip and the concert special in general. (But, alas, no Bobcat
Goldthwait, who appeared in "Leader Of The Pack" and "Be Chrool To
Your Scuel"...) Some fun facts gleaned here: Eddie Ojeda snuck himself
and his Corvette into the opening scenes of the "Hot Love" video, A.J.
Pero was disgusted the zombie-filled "Be Chrool To Your Scuel" was
banned while Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was everywhere, Mendoza felt
the "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock" videos painted the
band into a corner of being clowns, there was a mishap with the van
during the "You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll" shoot that nearly caused an
explosion, and in hindsight *everyone* thought the "Leader Of The
Pack" video was a horrible idea. Great fun -- I can't recommend this
one highly enough.
