-Ex-Deep Purple Vocalist Embraces Digital Download Technology: Joe
Lynn Turner Releases Multi-dimensional Solo Album In The U.S.A.

NEW YORK CITY -- During stints with Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore's
Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, singer Joe Lynn Turner
("JLT") was credited with helping these legendary rock bands redefine
their sound, diversify their repertoire and achieve even more
commercial success. On SECOND HAND LIFE, his first U.S.A. solo release
(Friday Music) in nearly five years and tenth solo album to date, he
proudly showcases the many sides to his rock and roll personality.

Turner says, "This CD caters to the ever increasing number of music
lovers who have embraced digital download technology to expand and add
diversity to their music collection. A large percentage of my fans
have always been a bit divided as to what genre of rock that they
prefer to hear on my solo albums. Rather than fight that, I chose to
celebrate it with the variety of rock genres represented on this
record. This album is designed for the digital era we are in. Fans can
download all their favorite tracks in the same genre or the whole CD.
They now have a choice! There are songs that are reminiscent of
Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen, my first solo disc in the
'80s, RESCUE YOU, as well as the recent Sunstorm project."

Highlights on SECOND HAND LIFE include a Rainbow/Deep Purple
songwriter reunion: an original version of a song Turner wrote with
Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover. There are also collaborations with
Reality TV's "Rock Star: INXS" singer Deanna Johnston, acclaimed
songwriter Martin Briley, Jack Ponti (who wrote for Bon Jovi) and Jim
Peterik (ex-Survivor).

The digital version also has both bonus tracks that initially only
appeared on either the Japanese or European discs. Longtime record
company executive and Friday Music CEO Joe Reagoso states, "The beauty
of this digital release is that the U.S.A. fans who bought either
import can now download tracks they didn't have previously."

The U.S.A. edition of SECOND HAND LIFE is currently available via
iTunes. The street date of the CD is August 28 (Distributed by RYKO)
and will feature the additional track, "Freedom's Wings." Reagoso
reveals, "For the JLT fans who purchase SECOND HAND LIFE/The Deluxe
Edition in the CD format, we think they will definitely be pleased
with the addition 'Freedom's Wings,' which is one of Joe's personal
favorites."

The head of Friday Music also admits he is a longtime fan of JLT's who
worked with him at RCA/BMG records when Turner was in Deep Purple. He
says, "It's great to have such a fine artist like Joe Lynn Turner in
the Friday Music family. Its no secret we have been a long time fan of
the artist, and this solid new album will truly please his ever
growing fan base, old and new alike."

Currently, Turner is on tour with Brian Johnson and Cliff Williams of
AC/DC, The John Entwistle Band and other artists as part of Classic
Rock Cares.

hopefully will be included as bonus material in the new CD. Go to

Katagory V: Hymns Revealed...

We know that you can't wait for the music. Well at least get a glimpse
of the artwork!

Bassist and founder Dustin Mitchell had this to say concerning the
completion of the album and the artwork.

"The new album is complete and the final mix has been sent off to the
record labels, so now it is in their hands, and we all get to wait
just a few more months for the final product. At this point everyone
in the band is happy with the end results, and with hearing the final
mixes, in my opinion, it's going to be fairly colourful in musical
styles, and maybe even a bit more retro-metal sounding compared to the
previous album.

"We once again ran into a few bumps toward the end, and basically slid
into home base with our deadlines. Once again that black cloud was
looming over our band, and we had another computer in the studio
freeze up and die, a different one, but the most crucial one needed,
and it happened at the tail end of mixing. It was touch and go for a
while; fortunately we were able to resurrect it after a few days of
trial and error, just in time to get the album done. And the problem?
Dust and dirt, that's it! Once we did everything possible externally
and were ready to give up and take it to a technician to retrieve the
songs off the hard drive, we then blew the computer out with
compressed air, which exploded out of that thing like a car spinning
out on a gravel road. We gave it one more shot, booted it up, and the
damn thing buzzed and hummed back to life. I'm not the most tech-
oriented guy on the block, but I guess you have to give those things a
bath sometimes? How quaint. It's a good thing we got it working, or
the end results of getting the album done on time, or even at all,
would have been extreme. In cases like this, it makes me miss the days
of analog and reel-to-reel recording!

"So, to commemorate the completion of the album, we have decided to
release the cover art for HYMNS OF DISSENSION for your viewing
pleasure. Mattias Noren did a wonderful job in capturing exactly what
we were looking for in both mood and concept, and it most certainly
fits the vibe of the album in our opinion. Absolutely fantastic, See
for yourself!"

New Signing: Nation Beyond

We are more than proud to announce the signing of Nation Beyond. This
amazing band really blow us away with their debut album that soon all
of you will be able to listen through Burning Star Records.

For more information on this amazing concept album check the band's
profile... more info about the concept will be released in due time!
So stay tuned!

BSR Summer Party 2007: Huge Success!!!!

Simplicity / Need) where really cool in their acoustic sets. We really

-THE PINK FLOYD AND SYD BARRETT STORY (DELUXE EDITION) Available On
DVD September 18, 2007 Through MVD Visual

MVD Visual is delighted to announce the DVD release of this personal
and candid profile of the once effervescent musician and now cult
figure of Syd Barrett. This new definitive edition includes two discs
with over 2 1/2 hours of DVD extras, including lengthy unedited
interviews from all members of the Pink Floyd. It's a limited edition
run of 5,000 in the Oyster Box packaging with ten items of
reproduction memorabilia in a special printed envelope. After the
limited edition has sold out, the double disc version will be then
packaged in a standard plastic double DVD box.

THE PINK FLOYD AND SYD BARRETT STORY retells the fascinating story of
the start of one of the largest and most influential bands in rock and
the drug induced breakdown of their original song writer and lead man.
Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright retell how
Syd's slip from reality haunted the band for many years and this is
clearly demonstrated in the tracks "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and
"Wish You Were Here." The film incorporates rare early footage of the
band performing; including a live show at the UFO Club, and an
appearance with former landlord Mick Leonard on "Tomorrow's World."
There are also insights from former girlfriends, landlords, flat
mates, producers, managers, friends and famous fans.

As one of the most famous creators and characters of the psychedelic
era, Syd Barrett had not conducted an interview or released music
between the early seventies and his recent passing, yet his self-
imposed anonymity still fascinates fans old and new. The original
songwriter for Pink Floyd was only with the band for a vibrant three
years when he left in 1968, yet when the band released their greatest
hits album in 2001 Syd had written over a fifth of the tracks. It's
been nearly 40 years since Syd Barrett left the band, yet mystery
still surrounds this prodigy of rock.

This fascinating documentary traces the creative and personal tumult
of Barrett's days with Pink Floyd, and the fallout from his
psychedelics induced breakdown.

PRESS QUOTES:

"Finally the Pink Floyd story as it should be told... a moving and
thoughtful documentary"
- Rough Guide To Pink Floyd

"Newly enhanced DVD reveals how the Barrett legacy looms large over
the band that left him behind... the film includes a treasure trove of
footage from the relatively well known to the impossibly rare."
- MOJO Magazine

EXTRAS INCLUDE:

o Roger Waters on Syd Barrett – An extended sixty minute interview of
Roger Waters talking about Syd, which includes Syd's musical
influences, his illness, the last time he saw Syd.

o Dave Gilmour on "Wish You Were Here" - Extended interview of Dave
Gilmour talking about how "Wish You Were Here" came to be written
about Syd.

o Robyn Hitchcock performing "Dominoes" and "It Is Obvious"

o Graham Coxon performing "Love You"

o Detailed biography of Syd Barrett

These extras consist of never-before-seen footage and the sound
quality of the DVD is outstanding in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS
surround sound.

-D.C.-based Metal Band Division Announces A Brand New Killer Contest
And Summer Dates

Division, the long-time metal thrashers from Washington, D.C., is
proud to announce a contest wherein a few lucky winners can appear...
and be killed...in an upcoming song! The contest wraps up Division's
summer schedule while the band performs with some of the best-known
names in the industry, all while recording its fourth CD.

The contest revolves around the upcoming song, "The Collector." When a
man's true love leaves him, he realizes he can't find a single woman
to replace her. He decides to make one out of all the prettiest parts
of his victims.

The winner (or winners) will be those victims in the song!

The band wants pictures of its female victims sporting Division
merchandise ( http://www.division-usa.com/media.php ,
http://www.division-usa.com/contest.php ) in the most creative way.
The instructions are easy: Cause a stir, make people turn their heads,
force them to have nightmares! Creativity is an absolute must with
this contest. Once the pictures are taken, contestants register with
the Division Gallery ( http://www.division-usa.com/gallery/ ) and post
them up!

Division will scream the name of the winner while on stage at the
Midwest Metal Anthem ( http://www.midwestmetalanthem.com/ ), August
25th, at J.J. Kelley's in Lansing, IL. During the band's set, "The
Collector" will make its debut, and the winners will be named in song!
That night, the winner's name(s) will also be posted on Division's
official site ( http://www.division-usa.com/ ) and MySpace page (
http://www.myspace.com/divisionusa ).

How Is It Judged?

The winner will be determined by a combination of number of hits,
rating on the gallery, and the band's vote. Pimp yourself out if you
want, the more hits, the better!

In tandem with this contest, the brand new limited edition "Hunt" T-
shirts ( http://www.division-usa.com/media.php ) have been created.
These shirts feature a unique, fanged version of the Division logo on
the front, and the song's appropriate catch phrase on the back.

These shirts are available Online, or at Division's live shows.

The band's summer schedule includes dates July 14th at Rocks (
http://www.rocksrichmond.com/ ) in Richmond, VA, and July 15th at Jaxx
( http://www.jaxxroxx.com/ ) in Springfield, VA with Bay area
thrashers, Testament. Division then takes a few weeks in the studio
before returning to Jaxx on August 17th with Kamelot (
http://www.kamelot.com/ ) and Leaves' Eyes.

The band will wrap up summer dates at the Midwest Metal Anthem, August
25th, at J.J. Kelley's in Lansing, IL.

Tell your friends, warn your neighbors and lock up your children. Let
The Games Begin!

-I dusted off my "Red Surf" DVD. I'm betting only diehard Kiss fans
even know about this movie, as it was one of the last, if not *the*
last, films Gene Simmons starred in during his '80s fling with acting.
I never saw it back in the day, and really had only heard rumors about
it -- I swear I read somewhere his character was a homeless Vietnam
veteran/beach bum/sage type. I managed to find the DVD in a cheapie
bin at Circuit City or Best Buy a few years back, and it sat on my
shelf ever since. (I laughed at the DVD packaging because it
prominently advertised George Clooney as the star -- obviously an
attempt to lure in unsuspecting Clooney fans, as back in 1988/1989 he
was virtually unknown and probably not a selling point for the movie.)
Anyway, this movie utterly, completely SUCKED. It's about a group of
cretins who waste time, surf, party, and act as drug deal middlemen in
Los Angeles, and it was so bad it makes "Point Break" look like the
"Citizen Kane" of the film genre that can only be described as "movies
about criminal surfers, and which feature rock star cameos." (A couple
of the Chili Peppers were in "Point Break," don't forget.) Turns out
Simmons' character is indeed a Vietnam vet (named "Doc") who lives on
the beach but he's not homeless -- he's got a nice pad, brokers the
drug exchanges that are carried out by Clooney and his band of merry
men (which includes Doug "Melrose Place" Savant and Philip "Alice"
McKeon), and supplies the firepower when the gang ends up fighting a
Mexican drug lord. He's even got one of the cheesiest "guy #1 yells
'look out' and shoots the bad guy who's about to shoot guy #2 in the
back" scenes in cinema history. Plus, he just looks silly and has 0%
credibility for the role, due to his long HOT IN THE SHADE-era mop of
hair. Oh, and there's one scene where they actually got him out on the
water, sitting on/paddling a surfboard -- let's just say this does not
seem to be his natural environment. :) His role is fairly small and
his character doesn't make his entrance for a while, but if you're a
completist Kiss/Gene fan who's into "Mystery Science 3000"-type film
viewing experiences, rush right out and pick this one up! :)

-Last week I mentioned my dad rescuing two boxes of vinyl records from
a dumpster behind his shop... I went over to my parents' house last
weekend to sift through the loot and there were some gems to be found!
Offhand the coolest things I recall are Thin Lizzy's BLACK ROSE: A
ROCK LEGEND (man is that artwork ever striking!), Kiss' ALIVE! and
ALIVE II (those gatefold sleeves always get me), UFO's double live
STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, Rainbow's LONG LIVE ROCK 'N' ROLL, Iron
Maiden's THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST (again, that full-size cover art
really pops), some Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter solo stuff (with
which I am not that familiar, but I probably should be since a lot of
bands I like seem to cite them as influences), Judas Priest's HELL
BENT FOR LEATHER and BRITISH STEEL, a handful of Deep Purple (MACHINE
HEAD, a "best of," PERFECT STRANGERS, THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT, and an
old live record), The Who's WHO'S NEXT, a friggin' *mint* version of
Alice Cooper's WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE, a trio of Molly Hatchet discs
(I am a sucker for their Conan The Barbarian-styled album covers),
Journey's pre-Steve Perry self-titled debut, a Kinks album where the
band logo is in the Kiss lightning-bold "S" font, some ancient ZZ Top,
and more southern rock from .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman
Brothers, and The Marshall Tucker Band. Plus, plenty more from the
likes of Twisted Sister, Aerosmith, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, David
Bowie, The Charlie Daniels Band, Styx, The Rolling Stones, Faces/Rod
Stewart, Blondie, Chicago, and some other pop bands. Quite a haul, for
sure! I didn't count 'em but there had to be over a hundred records --
and that's leaving out the Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon
Jennings, etc., stuff that I didn't snag... Christmas in July.

-Now in my current playlist: Queensryche - MINDCRIME AT THE MOORE
(DVD) (Rhino), JK Northrup - WIRED IN MY SKIN (Alien Records), Edguy -
SUPERHEROES (SINGLE) (Nuclear Blast), Dionysus - SIGN OF TRUTH (AFM

STEEN GRONTVED - NIGHT VISION GOGGLES (B-) Lion Music, 2007
12 tracks, RT: 38:53
Danish studio musician Steen Grontved steps out with his first
instrumental release NIGHT VISION GOGGLES, a mostly relaxed jazz-
fusion affair showing Steen to be a fine composer with impressive
technique. Steen eschews the usual guitar hero grandstanding often
found on instrumental albums in favor of well thought out melodic
excursions such as "Timber," "Home Planet," "Round And Around," and
"Still Here." Steed shows he can hang with the fretburners, doing his
best Satriani on "Run," while also demonstrating refined sensitivity
on "Bye." The main complaint I have is the drums, which often have an
artificial, programmed sound that depreciates pieces like "The Worm"
and "Playground." Unfortunately this will make it difficult for NIGHT
VISION GOGGLES to stand out from the multitude of this kind of release
flooding the market, and that's a shame because Steen is a talented
player who deserves to be heard by far more than this CD will likely
attract. All criticism aside, NIGHT VISION GOGGLES is an enjoyable
listen with its share of satisfying moments. I'm anticipating a
stunning sophomore effort from this guy...

JOHN MACALUSO & UNION RADIO - THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE (A-/B+) Lion
Music, 2007
13 tracks, RT: 65:30
One of main problems with a lot of today's music is lack of
originality; one need only spend a few minutes sampling the multitude
of hopefuls constantly uploading songs to the Internet, or watch the
latest top 20 video countdown to realize just how creatively bankrupt
many of these "artists" are. John Macaluso is one musician who
thankfully steers clear of imitation, avoiding the banal and trite to
create something truly unique. THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE is John's first
solo project and is one I feel uncomfortable comparing to anyone else,
as the blend of influences here is quite seamless. My recommendation
is to find samples of anything off this CD and savor the writing and
musicianship, as John is not only an excellent composer but has also
enlisted the assistance of some incredible guests to actualize his
vision: James LaBrie, Mike DiMeo, Vitalij Kuprij, Alex Masi, Chris
Caffery and Randy Coven just to name a few. Check out the heavy
rhythms and eerie melodies of "Soul In Your Mind," the spacey groove
of "Dissolved," the progressive masterwork "T-34," the sparkling flow
of "Starring 'PAIN'," John's mind-blowing drum solo "Pretzel" (with
hilarious intro), as well as the off-the-wall "6 Foot Under Happy
Man," and I guarantee you'll be kept busy digesting the great variety
of sounds and moods contained within. If you're looking for the latest
band that sounds just like something you've heard before, you can
safely move right on by THE RADIO WAVES GOODBYE; if, however, you are

Re: "Gyro Ball"

Hi Tim,

Just read your article in the new issue and I can confirm that the
Dice-K compilation CD is indeed legit. I live in New England, and the
other night, during the Red Sox telecast, they played a clip of the
new song "Gyro Ball." It was a rap-rock hybrid where the person who
mixed the song had Remy and Orsillo doing some kind of "scratch rap"
kind of thing. It was hilarious!

Also, just to correct your following article, DEADRINGER is actually
the third Razorback release, following the mentioned 2004 ANIMAL
ANGER, and the not-mentioned 2005 CRIMINAL JUSTICE. Just to put the
record straight. ;-P

Dave

[Thanks for the update on the "Gyro Ball" song with Nuno Bettencourt.
(See more on Nuno below...) And thanks for the Razorback info -- I
just wasn't sure. Probably coulda done a little more research
though... :) My bad. - Tim]

Re: Nuno/Detritus

You mentioned in the new Detritus that Nuno had "resurfaced" for the
baseball player's CD. Actually, Nuno has already resurfaced as he is
the guitar player for Perry Farrell's Satellite Party. The band is
currently on tour (I'll be seeing them here in Little Rock, Arkansas
in August). The album is really good and features some nice wanking
here & there. Definitely upbeat stuff & worth checking out if you like
Farrell's work in Jane's Addiction or Porno For Pyros. Also, I think
he's been consistenly releasing his various albums in Japan for a
while now. I got the first two Mourning Widows albums, but that was
it. He then had a different band title for the next few releases.
Wikipedia has information on them.

[Thanks for schooling me. I don't think I've heard a single note from
any of Nuno's post-Extreme projects. I remember being scared off by
the reviews of the first Mourning Widows album. I guess I have some
catching up to do, 'cuz now after a bit of digging I see there's
another band of his called DramaGods at http://www.dramagods.com/ and
http://www.myspace.com/dramagods . - Tim]
