House Of Shakira Studio Report #2
House Of Shakira check in with progress on their forthcoming album
RETOXED:
"RETOXED is getting nearer to completion. We have finally managed to
lay down all the trax without any casualties! Andreas have done a
beautiful job on the lead vocals, with assistance from the even more
handsome 'choir boys' Mats, Per and Mikael. Our dear friend Andreas
Bauman have now started the difficult task of making us sounding good
(and hopefully looking good also). He has 13 classic HoS masterpieces
to work with.

-Icarus Witch's SONGS FOR THE LOST -- Featuring Joe Lynn Turner -- To
Be Released In Europe On September 11, 2007
[Note: This comes from CruzDelSurMusic.com. - Tim]
Few bands have been able to built in such a small time, such a strong
following as Icarus Witch did! It seems like yesterday when their
first EP ROSES ON WHITE LACE was released getting the attention of
many metal heads around the world... Then came CAPTURE THE MAGIC in
2006 released in Europe by Remedy Records and the success of their
2006 European appearances (among those, the Headbangers Open Air
festival) did nothing but confirm that Icarus Witch was one of the
bands to be looked out in the always-prolific U.S. metal scene.
No surprise then that there's much expectations on their new album
SONGS FOR THE LOST, once again produced by Eric Klinger (Pro-Pain).
We're pleased then to announce that Cruz Del Sur Music will be
releasing the album in Europe on the 11th of September 2007, matching
the U.S. release date. To say that in the U.S. the album is released
by Cleopatra and distributed by one of the biggest distribution
companies around (Koch), adds a special flavor to our achievement!
But that's not all: the big news is that Joe Lynn Turner, the
legendary singer of Rainbow, Malmsteen and Deep Purple, is singing on
one track of SONGS FOR THE LOST, Def Leppard's cover "Mirror Mirror"
from the HIGH 'N' DRY album.
Watch out then for SONGS FOR THE LOST, because as the band recently
stated, "is a 10 song collection of deep, powerful, melodic music that
has changed our world."

-Hard Rock Park Fetes Led Zeppelin - The Ride
[Note: This comes from the HeadbangerNYC.com newsletter. - Tim]
Exactly one year after breaking ground on the world's first rock 'n'
roll theme park, Hard Rock Park celebrated another milestone Friday
(July 13), with the official topping ceremony for the Park's most
anticipated attraction, Led Zeppelin - The Ride. The topping ceremony,
which marks the completion of the highest lift hill for the signature
roller coaster, kicks the Park into "construction overdrive."
The Ride will tower more than 150 feet into the sky (15 stories tall),
serving as a landmark that will help travelers pinpoint Hard Rock Park
whether arriving by air or land.
Located in the Park's Rock & Roll Heaven zone, the signature steel
roller coaster will thrill riders with a six and a half minute
experience, partially over water. Reaching speeds of 65 mph, the
coaster will boast six breathtaking inversions, the largest of which
will be a 120-foot loop. Every moment of the ride, including thrilling
drops and loops, is timed to Led Zeppelin's hit single "Whole Lotta
Love," creating an unprecedented sensory experience and an adrenaline
rush rivaled only by a live Led Zeppelin concert.
The experience will begin in a huge silver airship, which is designed
to make guests feel as if they are stepping onto the cover of Led
Zeppelin's debut album. Once inside, band-related murals and props
will adorn the walls, while music and videos play throughout the
queue, leading to a "studio" area where guests will be treated to a
moving, multimedia show before climbing aboard the coaster. As the
ride begins its initial ascent, excitement will build in time with
"Whole Lotta Love," which is pumped into each car, thanks to a high-
fidelity on-board audio system.
Hard Rock Park will be an approximately 140-acre theme park boasting
more than 40 attractions for rockers of all ages. Opens next summer.

-Dan Lilker Calls "Get Thrashed" "Mandatory Viewing"; New York City
Premiere July 25
TRENTON -- The makers of "Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal" are
proud to announce the New York City premiere of the documentary will
be Wednesday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. at the New York International
Independent Film & Video Festival.
The NYC screening will feature appearances by many legendary thrash
artists including founding Overkill drummer and "Get Thrashed"
Associate Producer Rat Skates, plus members of Anthrax, Nuclear
Assault, Hades, Whiplash, Demolition Hammer, and others.
"'Get Thrashed' is a definitive and thorough treatise on the thrash
metal movement," said Brutal Truth/Nuclear Assault bassist Danny
Lilker. "If you missed out on thrash for whatever reason, this is
mandatory viewing, and for all of us that were swept up in the fury of
the storm, this will bring back memories of a time when new ground was
being broken in metal music and the ante was upped considerably!"
"This screening in NYC is very special for me because it's where I had
so many amazing thrash metal experiences -- from nearly getting
crushed at an Overkill show at The Ritz to seeing Slayer get banned
from the Felt Forum to watching the epic Clash Of the Titans tour hit
Madison Square Garden," said Director Rick Ernst. "NYC is the place
where my love and obsession for thrash metal came from."
"Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal" traces the rise, fall and
impact of thrash metal, an extreme style of heavy metal popularized in
the early 1980's by bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax,
Suicidal Tendencies and others. It is the story of the heaviest,
hardest music of the '80s and early '90s as told by the bands that
lived it, the fans and bands that grew up on it and by the artists
that carry the "thrash metal" flag today. The documentary throws new
light on an overlooked, yet incredible music scene and how it went
from a simple rumbling in the underground to a loud, obnoxious and
constant roar in the (almost) mainstream.
"Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal" will be screened on
Wednesday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. at Village East Cinema (181 2nd Avenue
at 12th Street, New York, NY 10003). Tickets are $12.00 and can be
purchased at http://www.nyfimvideo.com/ .
"Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal" is produced by Saigon1515
Productions in association with Kundrat Productions. "Get Thrashed"
was directed by Rick Ernst and the documentary's Associate Producer is
Rat Skates, founder and former drummer of Overkill.

-Of Hearts And Shadows Set To Unleash Debut Album, TOUCHING BASE WITH
A CHAINSAW, On October 24th
Perhaps there is no other band on the planet that the word "screamo"
fits best than for Of Hearts And Shadows. Hailing from San Diego,
California, the group -- which includes singer Scott Bixby, guitarists
Ricky Vazquez and Ian Archer, bassist Isaiah Herevia, and drummer Matt
Williams -- is readying the release of their first-ever full-length,
TOUCHING BASE WITH A CHAINSAW, which is one of the first releases for
the newly-launched Tyburn label. "We had two years worth of writing
for this album," explains Williams about the sessions. "We were able
to knock it out in three weeks -- we didn't have to sit and write a
bunch of stuff."
The group was formed by Vazquez and original bassist Allan Levy back
in 2003, and subsequently went through quite a few different members,
before finding the group's current lineup. While the group's sound
contains obvious elements of metal, hardcore, and emo, Williams
explains that the quintet refuses to be aligned with a single style or
approach, as their influences run the gamut -- "It goes from classic
rock to everything you hear up to today."
The group recently wrapped up a string of U.S. dates playing alongside
the Distance and Karate High School -- which went smashingly well. "We
take pride in throwing guitars and making it pretty insane on stage,"
adds Archer. "We like to let the music speak for itself, but kids will
say, 'That was an amazing show,' and then they'll listen to the
album."
With a scheduled release date of October 24th, TOUCHING BASE WITH A
CHAINSAW contains countless hard hitting highlights, including the
prog metal-esque "Make Sure You Tell Your Friends," as well as "Pretty
For Nostalgia," which shows that Bixby is one of the more intense
screamers in all of hard rock today. "This band is about the future,"
explains Vazquez. "Five young guys who appreciate the music that came
before, play the music of today, but are going to keep creating and
stepping outside the box into the future. Music is the last free thing
left to do. There are no limits, and that is going to allows us to
grow with every album we put out." And as evidenced by their debut, Of
Hearts And Shadows are certainly off to a good start.

-Listenable Records Update: Sybreed, Hate, The Amenta & Hacride
Swiss Sybreed Ink With Listenable Records
Non Conformists Swiss futuristic metal band, Sybreed, have signed to
Listenable and will release their upcoming album ANTARES on the first
week of October.
Born out of the ashes of Rain in 2003, main songwriter Drop decided to
explore new shores of synthetic melodies and metallic violence.
Sybreed's new album is undoubtably the band's strongest effort and
will surprise many a listener by it's incredible songwriting maturity.
ANTARES will also benefit from the contribution of drummer
extraordinaire Dirk Verbeuren (Scarve, Soilwork) who gave a
sadistically stunning performance on this modern mix of electronica,
futuristic pop and violent metal.
As the band describes, "ANTARES is the red pulsing noise celebrating
the fall from grace, the loss of hope and innocence and our own human
nature confronted to Eternity."
A demo version of the song "Emma Zero" to be featured on ANTARES is
available on the band's MySpace. More album tracks will be posted
there shortly.
Studio Updates From Hate & The Amenta
Industrial death/black metal mongers Hate will soon enter Hertz Studio
in Bialystok, Poland to record their new album, tentatively titled
KATHARSIS.
Hate have been working on new material for a few months now and are in
the pre-production process by creating samples and backgrounds for
what is now eight finished songs! The new album, which is going to be
a successor of the highly recognized ANACLASIS - A HAUNTING GOSPEL OF
MALICE & HATRED, is said to be the most mature and ambitious material
from the band thus far, demonstrating a great step ahead in
composition and arrangement.
Some titles from the new record are as follows:
Omega
Katharsis
Apotheosis
Threnody
Slaves To Their Graves
Resurrection Machine
The premiere of the new record has been set for January 2008 on
Listenable Records.
After releasing ANACLASIS, Hate have focused on promoting the record
by touring Europe twice in company of Carpathian Forest and
Decapitated, as well as headlining Metal Spirit Resurrection Tour Vol.
4 in Russia, and The Rebel Angels Tour 2007 in Poland.
Hate have also taken part in important festivals such as Party San
Open Air in Germany, Winter Assault in Czech Republic, etc. The band
is going to visit Ukraine and Belarus for a dozen of concerts this
year and play a second part of their Polish tour haunting 10 more
cities. Hate will also take part in Pushkin Drive Open Air in St.
Petersburg, Russia on July 07 and headline the fifth edition of
Filthrock Festival in Germany in September.
All the way from Sydney, Australia, The Amenta have released an update
about the new album they're currently recording.
The Amenta are in the studio, recording N0N, the full-length follow-up
to their acclaimed 2004 release OCCASUS. All guitars, Samples and FX
have been tracked and the band flies to Hobart, Australia to commence
recording drums at Red Planet Studios in July. N0N is a much darker
and more subtle album than its predecessor and is the product of a
more experimental recording ethos. The Amenta are stepping outside of
their comfort zone and enjoying chaos. Riddled with electronic noise
and guitar manipulation, N0N pushes modern technology to its limits.
Lyrically the album deals with shadowy deals and moral compromises of
this sick new world.
Song Titles:
Skin
Whore
Vermin
Spine
Rape
Slave
Entropy
Atrophy
Dystrophy
Cancer
Junky
Dirt
The Amenta will also re-release their debut album OCCASUS in limited
edition deluxe slipcase with a bonus DVD on July 23rd in Europe.
Hacride To Join Dying Fetus Tour

-Incantation Speak Out About South American Tour Issues
John McEntee releases a strong statement about Cathedral Rock
Productions:
"There were many problems working with Cathedral Rock Productions. I
would like to let everyone in the metal community know that he is a
real con-artist and after talking to many bands and promoters that
have worked with him we all agree the conclusion is he is a all around
a rip-off that does not care about the bands, fans or anything else
except how much money he can scam from everyone."
John continues, "Even with the major problems and financial loss that
Cathedral Rock Productions had plagued on us, we still made the best
of the tour and have worked with many great people. We also want to
thank all the Incantation supporters that have came out to the shows
along with everyone that have helped us make the best of our problems
with Cathedral Rock Productions."

-Desolate Ways Is Back With Former Members
The doom metal band Desolate Ways had another lineup change. The
drummer Ricardo Giordano left the band to dedicate his time to other
musical projects. After several tests with other drummers they decided
that the best option was to call Igo Menegaz, who returns to the band
as bassist Rodrigo Fernandes did last year.
About this change guitarist Elizeu Hainzenreder says: "We are very
satisfied with the return of Igo as Desolate Ways' drummer. We are a
band which has the luck that all the members were are childhood
friends, it makes us a real family. The concerts to promote TEARFUL
will continue until the end of the year, when we will concentrate on
the new album."
The return of the former lineup can be seen at the three-day festival
River Rock ( http://www.riverrock.com.br/ ), in 10, 11, and August
12th, where Desolate Ways will play with other 32 South American
rock/metal bands.
Samples of the new album are available in the band's MySpace page at

-So yeah, last Friday was Friday the 13th. Nothing weird happened to
me except, as I was riding home on the train, I started watching a
compilation DVD a buddy of mine made for me. It has a bunch of Kiss
stuff (videos, specials, etc.) that have aired recently on VH1 and VH1
Classic. I started watching the "When Kiss Ruled The World" show from
2004. At one point they were talking about their seminal gigs, and one
in particular was in New York City at either the Coventry or the
Diplomat Hotel. A brief image of a concert poster flashed across the
screen and the date was...<drum roll>...Friday, July 13. Kinda cool
being 30+ years removed from something like that. I half-expected my
train to enter some weird swirling Kiss vortex and emerge in NYC in
'74, so I could see the show in person. :) (And in other Kiss-related
news, I just got something about an "Ace Frehley Dunkin' Donuts
commercial at http://www.youtube.com/user/jamccor , but I haven't
watched it yet.)
-My buddy Jeff showed me a CNN.com article on catalog album sales. It
was cool to discover how many copies some discs sold in 2006: AC/DC's
BACK IN BLACK - 440,000 (plus another 156,000 so far this year!);
Metallica's black album - 275,000; Bon Jovi's CROSS ROAD - 324,000;
Guns N' Roses' APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION - 113,000; and Trans-Siberian
Orchestra's CHRISTMAS EVE AND OTHER STORIES - 289,000. Compilations
and "best of" collections from Queen, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, U2, Eric
Clapton, and The Police are also still doing well. Check it out at
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/17/music.newclassics.ap/index
.html
.
-I got a brief report from my friends who flew down to Oklahoma for
the big Rocklahoma festival this past weekend. The unofficial "Top 3
Bands" were Poison, Jackyl, and Twisted Sister, with Quiet Riot,
Jackyl, BulletBoys, and Steelheart rating as "surprisingly good." My
friends have already reserved their seats again for next year, and
it's rumored Night Ranger and Whitesnake are already slated to play.
-Now in my current playlist: Slough Feg - HARDWORLDER (Cruz Del Sur),
Iron Fire - BLADE OF TRIUMPH (Napalm Records), Widow - NIGHTLIFE (Cruz
Del Sur).

DELPHIAN - UNRAVEL (B-) Lion Music, 2007

Dutch quintet Delphian is one of those bands I find difficult to
categorize -- their arrangements are clever but not quite complex
enough to be labeled prog, but they do bring several interesting
elements into the mix making a tag of basic heavy metal inappropriate
-- so let's just call them artsy metal. One of the interesting
elements I referred to is the use of flute in selected places; while
this doesn't always work it is pretty unique in a metal context and
actually serves to add a different dimension to pieces like "Focus On
Acid" and "Undone." In a manner similar to her flute playing, singer
Aniek Janssen's vocals work better on some tracks ("Starting To
Unravel," "Creation," and "Hidden") and not as well on others ( "Black
& Blue," "Undone"). There are some great riffs and melodies woven into
UNRAVEL and I found the album to have a quirky "grower" quality the
more I listened. I had to take some points off for the production,
which is a bit muddy, and I would consider spicing the songs up with a
little more lead guitar, as Coert Bouten hints at some potentially
tasty solo shards at times but never really unleashes his full
potential. I think with closer attention to the mix, more creative use
of flute and the increased presence of lead guitar, Delphian could
well take their place among the better female fronted metal bands
coming out today. One to watch...

IRON FIRE - BLADE OF TRIUMPH (B+/B) Napalm Records, 2007
11 tracks, RT: 54:53

Main man Martin Steene & Co. are still raising the banner for power
metal, kickin' ass 'n' takin' names. BLADE OF TRIUMPH is an
improvement over last year's REVENGE -- which was pretty good in its
own right -- and one can't help but give him the thumb's up (er, horns
up) for keeping at it. He's still kind of got that semi-glam vibe
going on in his vocals but the music here is no bubblegum metal.
There's actually a hint of Metallica in places, and big production
(hail to Frederik Nordstrum!), ballsy energy, battering drums, and up-
front guitars abound. The songs are by no means the most original
pieces of metal you've ever heard -- the press kit even states "[the
band] never questioned their love of working with Metal 'cliches'" --
but now that so many power metal bands are disappearing off the radar,
it's nice to see one marching onward confidently. "Dawn Of Victory" is
truly a top-notch anthem, and other highlights include the rousing
"Gladiator's Path," "Steel Invaders," "Dragonheart," and "Bloodbath Of
Knights," and "Legend Of The Magic Sword," a nifty, almost balladish
tale of Excalibur. (Note: As with REVENGE, there is a limited edition
version of BLADE OF TRIUMPH that has bonus tracks not included on the
the promo copy I was sent for review. The bonus tracks are "Island Of
Damnation" and a cover of Demon's "Night Of The Demon.")

This band makes it look easy, even if it's kind of hard to categorize
its sound. Art rock? Pompy AOR?? Progressive hard rock??? Eh, who
cares, really, as long as more albums keep a-comin'. Guitarist/song
writer Tony Clarkin is a machine, able to churn out these no-filler
collections of songs that are timeless and readily identifiable as
Magnum, yet without simply rehashing the past. Vocalist Bob Catley is
one of my all-time favorite singers -- he just gets better with age --
and his handling of Clarkin's songs is dang near perfect. Throw in
some killer fantasy-based cover art that recalls 1985's ON A
STORYTELLER'S NIGHT, and you got yerself a winner. Highlights include
the regal and tasty opener "When We Were Younger," the infectiously
bouncy "Be Strong," the rockin' "Your Lies," the easy groovin' "Like
Brothers We Stand," and the single/video "Dragons Are Real" (whose
bridge section smacks of Night Ranger!).

NEUROTOXIN - V.S.L. (B+/B) Prison Shank, 2007

Thrash metal has endured a variety of permutations during the past
three decades, but to my ears it still sounds best served up
traditionally in the style of such originators as Slayer, Exodus and
Megadeth. Young Los Angeles outfit Neurotoxin display an impressive
grasp of classic thrash fundamentals on their recently released four-
song EP V.S.L. On sinister tracks such as "Degenerate" and "Ghostly
Confessor," Neurotoxin rise above similar bands by combining polished
but venomous riffs and solos with an excellent production. Vocalist
Johnny Toxin equally blends hardcore with thrash, his internecine
lyrics a strong match for the band's savage metal assault. Johnny also
handles rhythm guitar while Wildcat Matt (love the names) administers
precision solos, Savage City serves up agile bass lines and the
President delivers explosive and skillful percussion. Neurotoxin
definitely have the heavy artillery to create the next thrash
masterpiece, and V.S.L. is certainly a promising preview to their
upcoming full-length release. Prepare for "intoxination..."

Re: Magician press release in Detritus #419
I've seen this press release on several websites and yet no one has
noticed a mistake in it. Maybe I'm being too anal but Dirk Schlachter
hasn't been Gamma Ray's guitarist since 1997. He switched to bass in
the middle of 1997 when guitarist Henjo Richter joined the band. Yes,
you could argue that he plays bass-guitar but it still bugs me
nevertheless ;)
