-Honestly, I am not trying to turn this into a Friday's-only deal... I
have been swamped at work and that kinda cramps my Detritus style. The
next couple of weeks will probably see me continuing to fly by the
seat of my pants, but then hopefully things will mellow out. - Tim

Syrach -- Welcome On Napalm!

Napalm Records has signed the Norwegian Doomers Syrach (
http://www.syrach.com/ ). The band, recently awarded the "Demo of the
month" title in Germany's Metal Hammer, hails from the city of Bergen,
known for numerous popular Norwegian acts. Syrach plays raw Doom Metal
similar to that of British doomers, such as early My Dying Bride or
Paradise Lost, with an added touch of melodic and emotional quality,
as heard on Draconian ( http://www.draconian.se/ ) releases.

Release of DAYS OF WRATH: November 6th, 2007 U.S.A. + Canada

Upcoming Releases:

Hurtlocker - EMBRACE THE FALL (Sept 25: U.S.A. + Canada)
http://www.myspace.com/hurtlocker1

With their second album EMBRACE THE FALL, Chicago's extreme thrashers
Hurtlocker deliver exactly that for which they are known: extreme
Thrash Metal garnished with blastbeats, brutal death blows and a large
helping of aggression. Expect no lovely melodies, no ballads, and no
time for repose. EMBRACE THE FALL is a musical blow to the face and
Hurtlocker is the fist.

"So meticulous and serious about crafting time-honored thrash (with a
twist of Hatebreed-esque vocalizing), that they have made one of the
best Slayer albums since, well, the last Slayer album!" – Metal Edge

Mehida - BLOOD & WATER (Sept 25: U.S.A. + Canada)
http://www.mehida.com/

Mehida manage an extraordinary feat by converging their progressive
roots and technical prowess with strong, memorable vocal lines and
first-class songwriting. Thus, the Finns deliver a captivating and
multi-faceted album that still retains its catchy feel.

"Much more of a progressive affair, with a left-of-centre appeal that
works due to the sheer madness of it all...buries its infection deep
within your cerebral cortex" – Metal Maniacs

Enthroned - TETRA KARCIST (Oct 23: U.S.A. + Canada)
http://www.enthroned-horde.com/

The horde is back! The legendary cult band remains true to their genre
by delivering genuine Black Metal complete with racing blastbeats,
serrating guitars, rabid vocals, and an ominously cold atmosphere.
Enthroned have once again cast pitch-black high-grade steel.

"Lethal speed, head-lopping axemanship and inventive zeal
notwithstanding...may be the Enthroned album to release the f**king
fury" – Zero Tolerance

Svartsot - RAVNENES SAGA (Nov 6: U.S.A. + Canada)
http://www.wolfpackunleashed.com/

Svartsot is the next rising star in the Folk Metal heavens, as
traditional Scandinavian sounds and instruments meet brutal, yet
melodic Death Metal. Crushing mid-tempo tracks and catchy neck-
breakers driven by heavy guitar riffs, deep vocals, and whipping
drumming are refined with traditional folk melodies. Powerfully
produced by Jacob Hansen (Tyr, Hatesphere), Svartsot's debut delivers
new hymns for Folk Metal's next generation.

Sleep ( http://www.myspace.com/astheysleep ) freshly added to the

Studios as guitarist in 2005. While slamming out shows in support of
their 2007 EP COMPANION OF THE FIRE, the band will join the ranks of
over 30 of metal's finest bands, including Obituary, Full Blown Chaos,

-EkoTren Signs To Blind Prophecy Records

Florida band inks deal, celebrates with brief tour jaunt with Ankla

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Independent metal label Blind Prophecy Records has
bulldozed its way to the heart of the industry since its inception
earlier this year -- but its impact is about to get much stronger with
the addition of melodic metal band EkoTren.

Originating in Cape Coral, Florida in 2000, EkoTren is John Sheldon
(vocals), Keith Finnell (guitars), Derek DeSantis (bass), Steve Chin
(keyboard, backing vocals), and Eric Pottle (drums). While standing
solid and weathering passing fads, EkoTren follows a notoriously
centered work ethic and unmatchable creativity. EkoTren has formulated
a style distinctly their own, one that enraptures crowds with a
powerhouse performance among their rigorous state-wide circuits,
blowing away Florida crowds with the whirlwind melodies of "Point Of
View" and the skull-rattling ferocity of songs like "The Massacre." In
collaboration with renowned producer Paul Trust (Diecast, Endo),
EkoTren polished up and pounded out their latest EP, DESTROYING THE
AMERICAN DREAM in early 2007 and plan to return into Trust's clutches
this October to record new material which will complete their
full-length debut.

Under the vast wingspan of Blind Prophecy, EkoTren aims their reach
toward the far corners of the earth, propelled by the label's freshly-
inked distribution deals with the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe.
"We're looking forward to building a strong foundation and a happy
home at Blind Prophecy. We're anxious to take things to things to the
next level and determined to succeed," says guitarist Keith Finnell.

In honor of the record deal, EkoTren will emerge on a victory lap of
all-ages shows around southern Florida alongside Ozzfest heroes Ankla
(Bieler Bros. Records). EkoTren will officially seal the deal at their
show at Martini's Rock Club in their hometown of Cape Coral, Florida.

-Century Media Records Update

Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy are revving their engines for the release of RISE OF THE
TYRANT with the opening track blasting on their MySpace page. If it
doesn't get your ears horny for more I'd suggest digging out that
corporate, radio load you've been letting spew in your ear every day.
They are also infesting newsstands with a cover feature on Outburn
Magazine to prepare the world for the world's loudest musical riot.
That is unless you have the world's crappiest speakers. September 25th
is quite a ways to wait for RISE OF THE TYRANT for A.D.D. folks like
myself so Arch Enemy has joined forces with Machine Head to tour like
a deformed, Siamese twin serial killer impaling the U.S. starting
early next month. I wouldn't try to make sense of that one...just know
that chaos is coming.

Listen to new Arch Enemy track!

Behemoth

Behemoth!! As Ozzfest winds down I know some of you are still licking
your wounds, and probably other things too, from Behemoth's unmerciful
performance but if you could quit bleeding for a second I have some
more Behemoth to feed you! Nergal is destroying Gutar World Magazine
from the inside out; discussing how he developed the band's black
metal sound into a bombardment of chaotic symphonies and also how much
more of a badass guitarist he is than you. Well, he didn't say that
but don't fight the truth. Go find a scary looking stranger and skip
with him as fast as you can to your local newsstands now to check it
out! Actually, here's something easier below. But you can't read it
and be good, be an ethical Christian and buy the magazine! Or at least
steal it. Jesus said so!

Blessed By Broken Heart

Canada is lending their craziest party metallers, Blessed By Broken
Heart, to the states for an intensive tour with Kittie, Silent
Civilian, It Dies Today, and Bring Me The Horizon. Their ignitable
hair will be flaming across the U.S. until September 16th to start
spicing up the states for their PEDAL TO THE METAL release due in the
near future. Prepare your ball-hugging jeans to become even tighter,
because the '80s party has moved from your pants to the stage. If
party-core was a genre these guys would fit right in, but going any
deeper than that would be like explaining transcendental philosophy to
a stoned metal head...no point whatsoever. So judge for yourselves...

Despised Icon

The road life must be like crack for Despised Icon because while they
are on their second summer tour with Job For A Cowboy, A Life Once
Lost, Darkest Hour, and The Faceless, they have already signed on to
their third summer tour strategically designed to kick your face in so
hard you'll be sh**ting it out the next day. They will be teaming with
Suicide Silence and Winds Of Plague to gang bang every city willing to
shed enough blood to have a good time. Sounds fun huh? Check your date
with pain at their MySpace page below. Remember that these guys don't
get to see their families that often so do them a favor: go out,
support, and give them a big wet kiss from their mommies. Then run
back in the pit.

Divine Heresy

Divine Heresy are inviting only their most crazy, hardcore fans to
come celebrate their record release party for BLEED THE FIFTH on
August 28th at The Whisky in L.A. Ok, ok, if you're a poser you can
come too. What better way to hear the CD for the first time LIVE...and
TRASHED! Please don't puke in the pit though, people can get hurt in
there. Consider this your party invitation for the birth of one of the
most anticipated albums Century Media will put out this year. If you
live too far away or are too poor to fly down... um, I'm sure if you
take enough acid while listening to the CD you'll start to think
you're actually in the circle pit, but if that trip lasts for the rest
of your life...your bad. I was going to wait until next week to see
how many of you actually did that, but I'll save the five cells left
in your brain and let you on a little secret. Make sure you put a
diaper on before you read this, but starting next month Divine Heresy
will be touring with 3 Inches Of Blood, Static-X, and Shadows Fall!

Suicide Silence

Inching its way to be one of the most successful releases of the year
before it's even been released, Suicide Silence's THE CLEANSING, will
be backed by one of the most brutal tour packages to top off the
summer tours. Suicide Silence will lead Despised Icon, Winds Of
Plague, and See You Next Tuesday on a "no mercy baby" assault across
America. The debut CD can be pre-ordered on their MySpace. Yes, all
the limited shirts are gone forever, but have no fear; the pre-orders
now will come with a signed poster that you can nail to your chest if
it makes you feel better. Also, make sure to stay tuned for the video
premiere for one hell of a brutal track, "The Price Of Beauty." I'm
sure all you metal heads can relate to that theme... it's hard being
gorgeous I know.

Warbringer

Better strap your bullet belts back on; a new era of combat thrash is
cocked, locked, and aimed for your skull. Adding to the diversity on
Century Media's roster comes a band that will have old school
thrashers slitting throats with their spike bands again and new
listeners developing a weird urge to start wearing denim vests.
Century Media brings you Warbringer! While they were still pooping in
their diapers when Slayer and Metallica were pulverizing the scene,
the fresh drive of their energetic sound makes it seem like they were
head banging since they were just learning to swim in their dads' nut
sac. They're finishing up their debut album and then will be bringing
war to the masses on a tour with a frontline featuring Exodus, Arsis,
and Goatwhore. Check out their war field below.

Zimmers Hole

Zimmers Hole, featuring Jed (Strapping Young Lad) and Byron (Strapping
Young Lad/Fear Factory), are in the process of recording their debut
on Century Media. Man, where the f**k have I been? I had no idea these
guys already had material (BOUND BY FIRE and LEGION OF FLAMES) out! To
get a taste, click on the link below. The wallpaper alone is
priceless! I didn't know Jesus and Satan were homies with Zimmers
Hole. Make sure you don't become a retarded poser like me and not be
the last person who knows about one of the most psychotic bands in
metal. They are currently going through 19 insane induced songs in the
studio to add to Century Media's sole purpose of putting out only
quality bands that obliterate the cookie cutter barriers.

-Day Without Dawn Seeks New Members / Posts New Song

Day Without Dawn (formerly The Postman Syndrome) have recently parted
ways with guitarist/vocalist Jim Stang, and as a result had to delay
the recording of their forthcoming record. They're currently looking
for potential members to flesh out a new lineup. They posted the
following list of requirements on their Web site:

"So we're in the market for a member or two. The three things that are
really a priority for us are...
a) That you can tour at least three months a year, preferably more
b) that you can bring something of quality to the table musically
c) that you're not a dick

"Otherwise, we're pretty open to instruments and musical taste. We're
definitely not looking for a second drummer or bassist (unless you're
a bassist who owns a stick or a warr), but guitarists, vocalists, horn
players, keyboardists, string bowers, etc., especially a combination
of the two, send us an e-mail or MySpace message. We'll chat. It'll be
nice. It should be noted though that although vocal ability is a plus
we're not looking for a lead singer unless you're Freddie Mercury
reincarnate (or at least very, very good).

"If you feel like you're right for the job you can contact the band
at: Band@...

"You'll also notice we put a new song online. It's a demo of one of
the tracks from the new record, and fairly indicative of the direction
we're planning to head in."

Wildildlife join with Crucial Blast

"A couple months ago (we're talking mid-Spring '07, here), I received
an e-mail from Robotic Empire boss Andy Low commanding me to check out
a couple of songs that a band from San Francisco called Wildildlife
had posted online, immediately. I knew that the dude has a solid idea
of what kind of sounds I'm into, so I pulled up the link immediately
and was totally blown away by the two Wildildlife songs that I heard.
Heavy, crunchy riffage rolling over celestial FX freakout and gang
choral voices, part pop, part neo-psychedelic noisiness, part
metalloid skullcrush. Super melodic and catchy but vaguely menacing
and dark all at the same time. The band toured through here about a
month later, and I was even more floored by their manic live energy;
the band summoned up a wicked whirlpool of dense distorto crunch and
freaky singing, raging metallic percussive pummel, tribal rhythms and
crushing effects-soaked guitars, subdued floatational drones and
ecstatically gorgeous melodies, all let loose in a blast of of
psychedelic slowcore and swirling, cosmic sludge. Going back to a
review that Terrascope Magazine wrote about one of the band's earlier
CD-R releases, this sounds vaguely like Black Sabbath and Butthole
Surfers jamming together with ancient forest mystics, an experience
both brutal and beautiful, and which proves that Wildildlife have
already established themselves as serious purveyors of blown-out psych
heaviness. These guys have become one of my favorite new bands, and
I'm MEGA excited to be presenting their first full-length SIX through
Crucial Blast."

-So have we all been watching "Private Sessions" on A&E? I'm still
waiting for it to feature a band/artist I'm really interested in --
the closest call so far is probably Meat Loaf last Sunday... Avril
Lavigne's was an uncomfortable interview to watch, but at least she
rocked up the live portion with a full band set. The Goo Goo Dolls, on
the other hand, were B-O-R-I-N-G live *and* hard to watch as they were
interviewed. (Nice going, fellas!) I haven't seen all of the Toby
Keith episode yet -- my wife likes country and we're trying to find
time to watch this one together -- but I will say that in the portion
of the one song I did watch, Keith and his band rocked about a
thousand times harder than the friggin' Goo Goo Dolls...ugh. A big
surprise for me was the Blues Traveler episode. I do not -- and
probably never will -- like this "jam band's" music, but man was the
interview segment with the three main guys fun to watch! Host Lynn
Hoffman had a hard time getting a word in edgewise as the guys went
back and forth telling stories, making jokes, and ripping one another
in good fun. The Meat Loaf episode was odd for a couple reasons.
First, he did not play live in the studio -- the live segments were
taken from his new concert DVD (plug away!). Second, he seems cool but
a little strange, like an uncle you don't see very often. He did
acknowledge he's uncomfortable living the rock star/spotlight
lifestyle, though, so perhaps there's the explanation. He told some
great stories about meeting Charles Manson and being present the day
President Kennedy was assassinated (and the stories are also detailed
in a book he wrote -- plug away!), and it felt like the episode
could've easily gone on for another hour, minimum. Overall I like this
show's format, and I *really* hope it sticks around and ramps up the
guest list more to my liking! :)

-Now in my current playlist: Tribuzy - EXECUTION: LIVE REUNION (DVD)

Wolters - OUT OF ORDER (Lion Music), Crushed - MY MACHINE (No Relief

LILLIAN AXE - WATERS RISING (B-/C+) Metro City Records/Screaming
Ferret Wreckords, 2007
12 tracks, RT: 66:53
Man, this is a tough review to write because Lillian Axe has been one
of my favorite bands for nearly 20 years now... I'll just say it: I
have a hard time getting into this album, which is (sort of) the
band's first all-new studio set since 1993's PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA. Yes,
FIELDS OF YESTERDAY came out in '99 but those songs were all left over
from prior sessions, and even most of the WATERS RISING material dates
all the way back to the immediate post-PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA era of
1994-1995 -- the band was playing WATERS RISING tracks "Become A
Monster," "Thirst," and possibly even one or two more, live back then.
PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA was a step forward from the band's earlier,
poppier, and sometimes downright glammier (but always sophisticated!)
sound, and the songs that eventually became WATERS RISING definitely
continue down that road of turning darker, more ominous, more somber,
and more serious -- it seems the "fun" Lillian Axe is gone and it's a
drag. I don't want to have to be "in the right mood" to listen to a
Lillian album, dammit! Guitarist Steve Blaze still shines in spots,
though, especially in the closing fretwork-heavy instrumental "5."
"Become A Monster" charges forward (and should've been the album
opener), "Deep In The Black" features strings and is a pretty cool
mini-epic, and "I Have To Die, Goodbye" and "Until The End Of The
World" show flashes of the immaculate Lillian ballad sound, but
unfortunately most of the remaining songs are just too mid-tempo and
unexciting, and never jump out at you. Maybe now that the revamped
lineup is solidified and these songs have *finally* been released, the
band will start fresh and the next album will see the boys back in top
form. I will say this, though: vocalist Derrick LeFevre is one HELL of
a replacement for departed longtime front man Ron Taylor. I swear, if
you close your eyes and listen intently, you can't tell it's not
Taylor. Based on this, and as long as Blaze doesn't elect to play only
new stuff, Lillian should still slay live.

Wow, this is a fun album from outta left field! I know these guys have
been around for a while but I've never managed to check 'em out.
HARDWORLDER is a nifty mix of the NWOBHM sound, Judas Priest from
about STAINED CLASS through BRITISH STEEL, vintage Thin Lizzy, and,
oh, maybe a dash of the "This Is Spinal Tap!" movie soundtrack -- and
that is meant as a sincere compliment. The songs are guitar-driven
(there's a fair amount of nice harmony interplay), have a sci-fi
lyrical bent, and don't always follow the standard structures,
sometimes ending when you expect more. And there's just a *huge* '70s
vibe, so much so that you listen and can't help wondering where the
vinyl clicks and pops are... Check out the complete disc online at
http://www.cruzdelsurmusic.com/hw/prev_hardworlder.htm -- it's part of
the label's "Try Before Buy" series -- and see for yourself. Hot
spots: Rockin' instrumental "Galactic Nomad," the boogyin' "Insomnia,"
the regal "Dearg Doom" (raise your hands if you recognize this as a
Horslips cover -- yeah right!), the riff-tastic "Frankfurt-Hahn
Airport Blues," and the hilariously fun Manilla Road cover "Street
Jammer." Extra bonus points for the "...and you're flogging an alien
corpse..." lyrics in "Karma-Kazee." Awesome.

Oh yeah, Y&T live baby! I've never seen the band live in person --
just on bootleg videos and the 20+ year old LIVE AT THE SAN FRANCISCO
CIVIC release -- so this DVD was a very welcome addition to my
collection! Y&T is probably one of the most underrated hard rock/heavy
metal bands ever, slugging away since the '70s but never really
hitting *that* big. Why, I don't know. Front man/main man Dave
Meniketti is a rare singer/guitarist/lead guitarist/song writer with
strong talent in all four areas -- truly remarkable. Joining Meniketti
in Y&T these days are longtime bassist/partner in crime Phil Kennemore
plus relative newcomers John Nymann on guitar and Mike Vanderhule on
drums. The first disc in the set features a nearly two-hour, 16-song
live show filmed with multiple cameras at a large club in The
Netherlands, and the tracks comprise a fairly thorough overview of the
band's extensive catalog. The second disc has a "Backstage / After The
Show" segment with the guys trying to wind down from the gig; a "Meet
And Greet" segment featuring fan testimony and a post-show autograph
session; a "Sound Check" segment showing the band noodling on stage as
well as running through "Ten Lovers," "Sail On By," and "Midnight In
Tokyo"; a "Before The Show" segment with more fan testimony from
outside the venue; an "Outtakes" segment whose highlight is Meniketti
halting the start of "Mean Streak" because his guitar was muted; a
photo gallery; and three more songs performed live in daylight at the
2006 Bang Your Head!!! festival in Germany: "Black Tiger," "Don't Be
Afraid Of The Dark," and "Midnight In Tokyo." (The disc also has a
series of short ads for live Foreigner and Bang Your Head!!!
compilation DVDs.) The show itself is tight, fun, and played well --
these guys are total pros -- and the bonus features are fairly
standard but good. There are a couple uncomfortable-yet-funny moments,
including 1) the band visibly wondering if the film crew is going to
ever put away the cameras in the post-show dressing room, and 2) some
awkward fan interviews. Put simply, you need this DVD if you're a fan
of either Y&T or classic, guitar-driven hard rock.
