-Iron Maiden - SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME
With the overwhelming success of the current "Somewhere Back In Time
World Tour '08," and the recent No 1 selling DVD LIVE AFTER DEATH, EMI
Records are proud to release a very special album on CD and double
picture disc vinyl on 12th May to chart the first decade of the band's
extraordinary career. The album celebrates the essence of the current
tour by featuring most of the essential tracks from the band's first
seven studio albums and one live album, recorded between 1980 and
1989, and is aptly also entitled SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME (full track
listing below).
In an unprecedented move to let younger fans hear, understand and
appreciate the quality of these recordings EMI launch the unique
Somewhere Best In Sound whereby the curious/adventurous can download
the entire album without charge from http://www.ironmaiden.com/ as a
high quality audio file (WMA) which is a typically powerful 320 kbps.
Fans will then be able to listen to the entire album at their leisure
three times before the download expires. The listener is then given a
simple option to upgrade and purchase the album as a full traditional
DRM-free download (so they can then copy or do as they like with the
album).
Manager Rod Smallwood explains the thinking behind this innovative
move:
"Maiden have a huge catalogue that is highly treasured by fans and
media alike. However we recognize that our ever-increasing fan base is
very young and can't be expected to know all the earlier albums, which
is why we have put this collection together for them. Many of our fans
weren't even born when the original albums were first released,
although amazingly they seem to know all the lyrics when they sing
along with the band at our concerts! We also recognize that 'albums'
as such have become unfashionable to many over recent years with TV-
generated pop artists stringing a couple of 'hit' singles together
with filler tracks and releasing them as a quick fill album which
disappoints and quickly becomes dated. So this is both an introduction
to the band's recording history and a chance for young fans to try a
full-length Maiden album and realize they're getting the real deal!
"We wanted to give the kids of today a fair chance of hearing the
music as we would have first heard and experienced it in our day when
checking it out in a record shop -- top quality sound, in their own
time and in an environment of their own choosing so they are able to
absorb the depth and worth of the music and lyrics that make Iron
Maiden the phenomenon they are. What better way to use modern means
and a very high quality download! Sadly the WMA (Windows Media Audio)
isn't compatible with Macs or iPods but we are confident that our
young fans are adept and fluent with modern technology and we will
post simple instructions on our Web site for any that need guidance."
The full track listing for the album SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME is as
follows: "Churchill Speech," "Aces High," "2 Minutes To Midnight,"
"The Trooper," "Wasted Years," "Children Of The Damned," "The Number
Of The Beast," "Run To The Hills," "Phantom Of The Opera" (live), "The
Evil That Men Do," "Wrathchild" (live), "Can I Play With Madness,"
"Powerslave," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," & "Iron Maiden" (live).

-MEMORY CRASH -- Out Now On Magna Carta Records
Guitar Icon Steve Stevens Of Billy Idol Releases First Solo Album In
Over 10 Years March 4th, 2008
HOLLYWOOD -- After a decade, the much-anticipated Steve Stevens solo
release is invading the world -- MEMORY CRASH released March 4th, 2008
on Magna Carta Records.
Stevens spent the last few years out on tour in support of Idol's
album DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND. Once off tour, Stevens spent time
orchestrating his new album and signed to Magna Carta Records. He
spent the last year meticulously laying down the tracks to his newest
guitar masterpiece.
Choosing a very retro-contemporary style, Stevens decided he would
make this a very real and well-conceived album, something that has not
been heard in years. Reasserting the quality that made him a star,
Stevens just calls it good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll. It's just
Steve Stevens, his guitar, and his beloved effects -- all the
ingredients that makes this album a work of genius.
MEMORY CRASH boasts such tracks as "Water On Ares," "Hellcats Take The
Highway," "Small Arms Fire," an interpretation of Robin Trower's "Day
Of The Eagle" (featuring Dug Pinnick of King's X), and the rousing/
psychedelic "Cherry Vanilla." "I have a lot of weird little segues
going on with this record," Stevens explains. "I've always loved that
about the prog records, like DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. You enter this
little theater of the mind. It's a true headphone experience."
Guitar World magazine once said that Steve Stevens "orchestrates the
growls and snarls that come of his guitar much the same way that
Bernstein conducts the Philharmonic." It's this variety of aural
characteristics that also explains Stevens' musical career path. Not
only is he the longtime musical partner and friend of British punk-
rock icon, Billy Idol -- together delivering the million-selling
albums BILLY IDOL, REBEL YELL, WHIPLASH SMILE, VITAL IDOL, and
GREATEST HITS, as well as a new CD, DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND -- but he's a
Grammy Award winner (Best Rock Instrumental for his work on the "Top
Gun" soundtrack), a sought-after songwriter (co-wrote "Bolero" for the
"Once Upon A Time In Mexico" soundtrack), a noted session guitarist
(Michael Jackson, the late Robert Palmer, The Cars' Ric Ocasek and
most recently, Pink), and a solo artist with two vastly divergent
albums, rock 'n rolling ATOMIC PLAYBOYS and the Latin-influenced
FLAMENCO A GO GO. Not bad for a shy kid from the rough and tumble
section of the Ramones' Rockaway, Queens on the edge of New York City.
MEMORY CRASH was recorded and engineered by Steve Stevens and Beazle
T. Monk at the Purple Room. Brian Tichy (Billy Idol/drummer) plays all
percussion and drums, Stevens plays guitar and all other instruments.

-The Stript Come Undone On Debut Release
LAS VEGAS -- Fast rising Las Vegas hard rock merchants The Stript have
released their self-titled debut six-song EP through the already
defunct Iffiym label. Yes, you read that correctly. Front man Mike
Lorenzo explains, "Iffiym was a local label who had released a couple
of albums and as they were getting ready to put our EP out they went
bust so they gave us the copies that had been manufactured and we
basically called it even."
Watching their record label dissolve before their eyes didn't put off
the determined quartet, rather it invigorated them and they started
hitting the local clubs hard with the intensity of a sledgehammer and
made several trips out of town. Lorenzo elaborates, "We just said
screw it and booked ourselves two tours up and down the west coast,
playing anywhere and everywhere. We went out for three weeks, came
home for a bit and went back out for five more weeks. Who says you
can't do it on your own?"
Attitude infused tracks such as opener "Come Undone," "Runnin' N'
Screamin'," and the EP's focus track "Where Will You Go" call to mind
the likes of Sunset Strip heroes such as Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns
and Bang Tango as well as contemporary "glamsters" such as Sweden's
Backyard Babies and Hardcore Superstar among others.

-Rat Skates Hosts "Thrash Metal Roots" Radio Special -- Airs This
Sunday
NEW JERSEY -- "Thrash Metal Roots" a radio special hosted by
filmmaker/ Overkill founder Rat Skates, will be broadcast on WRAT 95.9
FM "The Electric Ballroom," Sunday March 16, 2007 at 10:00 p.m.
Eastern.
Veteran Sirius radio DJs Keith Roth and Aimee Kristi welcome Rat
Skates to "The Electric Ballroom" for an in-depth look at the bands
that inspired the 1980s Thrash Metal movement. "Instead of playing
actual Thrash Metal or just no-brainer cuts from the obvious bands, I
culled about 20 songs from punk, metal, rock and hardcore that
distinctly reflect the 'stepping up' of our playing styles and
attitudes that inspired the evolution of the Thrash genre, going back
to 1977, and ending up in 1987," says Skates. "There,s some of the
bigger names, some smaller, but each song has a unique component,
whether it was double bass drumming, lyrical content, palm-muted
guitar playing or maybe just pure aggression that was totally ground-
breaking for that time period, all of which had a very significant
impact in pushing the envelope for us back in the '80s. The bands that
we're playing are the dirtiest and perhaps very unknown roots that
will unearth what inspired us all: Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax,
Megadeth, Overkill, on and on...which directly set the footing for
what's going on today."
"This show will be a great listen, it will take the audience right
back to 'the day.' Undoubtedly it will educate the 'new school,'
remind the 'middle school' and take the 'old school' back to 'pre-
school!'"
"Thrash Metal Roots" will be broadcast on New Jersey's WRAT 95.9 FM
"The Electric Ballroom" on Sunday, March 9, 2007 at 10:00 p.m.
Eastern, and will also be streamed worldwide on the Web via
http://www.wrat.com/ , by clicking "Listen Live."
Rat Skates is the founding drummer of Overkill and a filmmaker. His
latest release "Born In The Basement" is an autobiographical
documentary about the birth of Overkill and the Thrash scene. The
film's origins begin in 1980, as the East Coast of North America
experienced a massive culture clash of Punk, Disco, Stoner Music, New
Wave and Heavy Metal. Frustrated by this Suburban identity crisis and
fueled by "The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal," a small group of
energetic youths were unknowingly creating the most extreme music ever
to assault global eardrums: Thrash Metal. Skates was one of the
movement's most recognized pioneers. "Born In The Basement" is a drive
through his tunnel vision to success, and the philosophy that turned
his dreams into reality...THE "DIY" MINDSET! This movie boldly goes
well behind the scenes, deep into the NY/NJ cover band circuit and
pre-digital tape-trading underground to candidly reveal the hidden
hurdles that every young musician must jump in the quest for rock
stardom, the passion of their vision, and dedication to their family.
The film is available on DVD at http://www.ratskates.com/ and at
retailers worldwide through The MVD Entertainment Group,
http://www.mvdb2b.com/ .

-Sweden Rock News: Vinny Burns Back With Dare!
Sweden Rock Festival
4-5-6-7 June 2008
Solvesborg, Sweden
Dare + Vinny Burns = Truth!
After Thin Lizzy folded keyboard player and singer Darren Wharton
formed the band Dare in 1986, together with guitar player Vinny Burns.
Two years after the debut OUT OF THE SILENCE saw the light of day and
they supported acts like Jimmy Page, Gary Moore and Europe. The album
even entered the Swedish charts at three occasions. The heavier and
now classic follow-up BLOOD FROM STONE was released in 1991, and they
got a pretty good fan following. Despite this it all became quiet
after this. Finally Darren decided to resurrect the name Dare in 1998
and the more melodic and Celtic influenced CALM BEFORE THE STORM saw
the light if day, with a new band lineup. After this the band released
two more studio albums and a live CD/DVD. Now it's finally time for
Vinny Burns to again enter the ranks of Dare after several years in
bands like Ten, Asia, Ultravox and Burns Blue. This probably means
they will play some classic songs from the first two releases.

-New Neal Morse And Ayreon From Radiant Records!
Hello Fan of all things Musical,
We have returned from Europe armed with some great new releases
designed to stir your heart, soul and mind. Talk about diverse! We've
got a new worship CD from Neal Morse, and a new Sci-Fi extravaganza
from Ayreon!
Neal Morse – SECRET PLACE (WORSHIP SESSIONS VOLUME 3)
This is the stunning new release that the message boards are all
talking about. It was available only on Neal's last visit to Europe
and many are already talking about how much they are enjoying this
one. Particularly the beautiful addition of Julie Harrison's vocals is
of note here. There is an even mix of new songs from Neal and others
that he and Julie have been known to sing at these worship events. In
fact, the album was born because so many would ask where they could
get the song that they sang together and it didn't exist. Now it does.
With the same crew as the last worship disc, SEND THE FIRE, Neal takes
us boldly into a spiritual secret place where we can linger at the
throne of grace, if that's your idea of a good time!
Ayreon – 01011001 Special Edition and Limited Deluxe Edition
With his Ayreon project, legendary multi-instrumentalist, composer,
producer and vocalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen single-handedly revived
the rock opera genre in the 1990s. Since then, Ayreon has achieved
worldwide critical acclaim and success with albums charting in various
countries. The seventh Ayreon output, 01011001, finds Lucassen both
exploring new musical frontiers and revisiting his roots.
With a running time of 102 minutes, 01011001 shines with all of
Lucassen's beloved musical styles. Progressive space metal,
electronic-, folk- and symphonic rock seamlessly intertwine, resulting
in Ayreon's trademark contrasts and dynamics. Keyboardists Derek
Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater), Tomas Bodin (The Flower Kings) and Joost
van den Broek (After Forever) provide the shredding and symphonic
virtuosity that are sure to please prog enthusiasts everywhere.
We have two versions: The Special Edition box (with 28-page booklet
and bonus DVD), and the Limited Deluxe fold-out slipcase (with 36-page
booklet and bonus DVD). Other DVD features include a 45-minute behind-
the-scenes, Ed Warby's drum session, demos, bloopers, and a state-of-
the-art six-minute computer animated video for "Beneath The Waves"
(created by Simon van Vegten at DPI) in 5.1 surround sound mix. We
only have the NTSC version.
Amazing artwork! Incredible stuff!
Available now at http://www.radiantrecords.com/

-Z Records News
Z Rock 08 Two Months And Counting
We are now just two months away from Z Rock 08 on May 16 / 17. Certain
adjustments have been forced upon us regarding the lineup due solely
to band internal problems which are beyond our control. We believe
that the additions we have made more than compensate for the losses
and we now forge forward.
The lineup for day one on May 16th is now....
HOUSE OF LORDS
BOMBAY BLACK
ROCKSTAR
with one more band to be added
tickets: £25.00
doors: 6:30 p.m. 'til late
The lineup for day two on May 17th is now....
BLACK 'N BLUE
BONFIRE
SHY
VON GROOVE
EDEN
STEVE GRIMMETT BAND
STORMZONE
REDLINE
tickets: £45.00
doors: Noon 'til late
Tickets are only available online at http://www.zrecords.net/ [online
store] or http://www.myspace.com/zrockfest . If you do not have a
credit card and wish to send a postal order or cheque please e-mail
zrockagency@... or call 07724 606920. Tickets will go on sale
from one over the counter outlet only: ST Records will commence over
the counter sales on March 22nd.
Ticket sales to date have been good but really do need to increase
drastically if we are to ever stage another festival. We did have the
option to rerun the show on May 18th if the 17th sold out but this
idea has been scrapped. The Asylum has a state-of-the-art PA and
lights system but is also smaller capacity-wise than last year's
venue. We therefore urge people to buy now rather than risk
disappointment. Our full-scale promo starts on Monday which will
automatically increase sales so be forewarned.
We would like nothing better than to announce another Z Rock on the
day for 2009 so your support in advance is greatly appreciated and we
look forward to seeing you all.

-Nation Beyond - THE AFTERMATH ODYSSEY
Label: Sensory / The Laser's Edge
Street Date: March 18, 2008
In the past few years Sensory has presented the metal community with a
number of amazing debut releases. Bands such as Circus Maximus and
Pathosray are generating maximum buzz and sales continue to climb.
Nation Beyond is our latest discovery and we are proud to introduce
them to North America. Nation Beyond began life as a side project from
Debase guitarist Jonas Karlgren and Face Down bassist Joakim
Hedestedt.
These two industrial/death metal bands have a multitude of releases
between them on labels such as Nuclear Blast, Black Lodge and
Sanctuary/Noise. It was the desire to create an epic concept album
with a different musical direction that united these two talented
musicians together. Using Debase and Face Down band mates as well as
some fresh new faces, they set to work.
Vocalist Nielz Lindstrom is quite a discovery. His emotion filled
delivery brings to mind Evergrey's Tom Englund as well as Dead Soul
Tribe's Devon Graves. They have found the perfect counterpoint in the
angelic voice of Sara Heurlin.
THE AFTERMATH ODYSSEY is a dramatic tale of love, hate and betrayal
set in the wake of a nuclear apocalypse. Symphonic arrangements and
the use of a real choir adds a dynamic contrast to the snarling riffs
and hook filled melodies. Karlgren and Hedestedt have come up with the
perfect balance of power and progressive elements evoking the spirit
of classic metal albums like Savatage's DEAD WINTER DEAD and
Queensryche's OPERATION: MINDCRIME. This is intense, angst-ridden
music dripping with atmosphere that will draw you in as the story
unfolds.
A masterpiece such as this demands a graphic presentation that matches
the music and the band delivers. Nation Beyond arrives in a gorgeous
digi-pak with a beautifully illustrated 28-page full-color booklet.

-Axemaster Update
While the band finished the music for the new CD and turned the
recording over to new singer Dan Kaisk to lay down the vocals for what
will be BY FAR the best Axemaster ever, there has been some news...
The band's release 5 DEMONS (IMPERATIVE IS THEIR DEMISE) from 1991 has
been added to Smog Veil Records' iTunes roster for downloading
(joining BLESSING IN THE SKIES). 5 DEMONS was the last release the
band did while still active and the last time they released all-new
music. It's quite possibly the best of their old material. Check it
out at http://www.smogveil.com/ecom/ .
Sol Music Management ( http://www.solmusicmanagement.com/ ) hooked the
band up with the Independent Artist Company and KAIC to create a page
which includes two of the band's most popular old songs to
specifically be downloaded by radio stations for airplay. The songs
have gotten great response from several shows/stations. You can see
the page at http://iacmusic.com/artist.aspx?id=93089 .

-Century Media Records, Mediaskare Records, Hot Topic And Alternative
Press Present The 2nd Annual "Metal For The Masses" Tour
Century Media Records, Mediaskare Records, Hot Topic and Alternative
Press are teaming up to present the 2nd annual "Metal For The Masses"
Tour. This massive six-week trek, which kicks off on April 12th,
features some of the Century Media family's hottest new acts including
As Blood Runs Black, Stick To Your Guns, Winds Of Plague, The Ghost
Inside (on select dates) and Veil Of Maya. With Dead Hands Rising (on
select dates) and Belay My Last (on select dates) round out the bill.
This devastating package is one of the most brutal, fan-friendly and
affordably-priced tours this spring and is sure to be the perfect
alternative to the upcoming oversaturation of festival events. For
additional information on any of the bands or to view the tour's
itinerary feel free to visit http://www.myspace.com/metalforthemasses
.
The L.A.-based quintet As Blood Runs Black created quite a buzz for
themselves with their debut Mediaskare release, ALLEGIANCE, and the
hype for their sophomore effort continues to build to epic
proportions. The band's live presence is a force to be reckoned with
and is built on aggression, speed and depth-defying musicianship. You
don't want to miss out on this headlining set; prepare yourself for
their new full-length release this summer.
Never one known to rest on their laurels, As Blood Runs Black welcomes
this undying touring schedule, which sees them come straight from the
Unearth and Bury Your Dead tour into this much-anticipated headlining
run. This trek marks their first full headlining U.S. tour and will
feature a slew of new material from their upcoming album. This is your
first chance to hear this material live, so don't miss out.
As Blood Runs Black states: "We are looking forward to being back on
the road after being home for three months, especially with all our
Southern California brothers and Midwest label mates With Dead Hands
Rising and new members to our extended family Veil Of Maya on the
tour. It will be great to play new songs in front of a live audience
to give them a taste of what's to come from our new album, which will
be coming out at the end of the summer. Starting this year in the
studio has left us starving to get back on the road."
Guitarist Sal Roldan says: "From working at Hot Topic and selling the
Metal For The Masses CD, it's definitely a trip to be on the tour for
it." Guitarist Ernie Flores further comments: "Being a part of this
tour is a privilege, headlining this tour is an honor."
Another Southern-California based quintet, Stick To Your Guns, have
just completed work on their much-anticipated new full-length
offering, COMES FROM THE HEART, with acclaimed producer Zeuss
(Hatebreed, Shadows Fall), which is set for a May 13th release. The
album is crushing with diversity, with something for everyone. It has
everything you could possibly need, from giant melodic singing
choruses, to intensely fast beats with devastating guitar riffs. In
2008, Stick To Your Guns will deliver an album that will have the
thrashers headbanging like its 1984, while the hardcore kids create a
flurry of circle pits.
Casey Lagos (drums) further comments: "We are so excited to do this
tour and play some new tunes from our upcoming album. We've been great
friends with As Blood Runs Black and Winds Of Plague for almost five
years now. We all started around the same time and played shows
together a lot when we were younger. It's been so awesome to watch our
friends' bands grow, and be able to travel the nations together doing
what we love and are called to do. See you out there!"
Winds Of Plague is currently one of the hottest bands in the genre as
their debut CM offering, DECIMATE THE WEAK, stormed out of the gates
with a vengeance. The group just completed the "Arthropodan Eroticism
Tour" with Dead to Fall, Impending Doom and Belay My Last, leaving a
trail of disaster throughout each city. The addition of Kristen
Randall (keyboards) added another deadly element to their already
devastating assault.
Johnny (vocals) further describes his excitement over the tour: "When
I first started getting into metal I would always anticipate the
release of Hot Topic's Metal For The Masses compilation. It's a great
way to discover new up and coming bands and sample new material from
old favorites. Being featured on the comp. as an artist this year is a
huge personal accomplishment and an awesome opportunity for the band.
The lineup for the 2nd annual tour promises to be one hell of a show
and we couldn't be more proud to play alongside our California
brothers As Blood Runs Black and Stick To Your Guns, as well as the
very powerful Veil Of Maya. This is one show you don't want to miss.
We hope to see you all there."
DECIMATE THE WEAK retains the band's hardcore roots while the
atmospheric sounds of Scandinavian black metal and classic American
metal reign supreme. This stunning slab of brutality annihilates the
listener with its razor sharp riffs and sheer intensity backed with a
monsoon of angst and inner demons that is just waiting to be expelled
on stage.
In 2008, Winds Of Plague pave their own path of destruction unlike
anyone has yet witnessed.

-Ihsahn's ANGL Set For Release
Candlelight Records today confirms May 27 as the American release date
for ANGL, the second solo album from former Emperor vocalist/guitarist
Ihsahn. The album features nine new songs all written and performed by
the highly respected musician. The album features guest performances
by drummer Asgeir Mickelson, bassist Lars Koppang Norberg (both of the
band Spiral Architect) and Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth).
Recorded and mixed by Ihsahn at Symphonique Studios in Notodden,
Norway (the studio owned by Ihsahn and partner Heidi Tveitan),
additional work was completed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Amon
Amarth) at Fascination Street Studios and Borge Finnstad (Mayhem,
Borknagar) at Toproom Studios. Commenting about the record's musical
collaborations, "Asgeir (Mickelson) did such a great job on my last
album (THE ADVERSARY, Candlelight 2006), that while in preproduction
for ANGL I programmed a much more generic drum track to leave more
creative license for him. It was on Asgeir's recommendation that Lars
(Koppang Norberg) contribute to the album. They both recorded at
Asgeir's studio (Multimono Studios) and it came together nicely."
Working with Mikael (Akerfeldt), "Mikael and I go back as friends
since the early Nineties. We met up when Emperor headlined Wacken in
2006 and had a great time watching bands together. We talked then
about doing something together at some point and in spite of busy
schedules on both sides this luckily came to happen. Rough mixes of
'Unhealer' with lyrics were sent to Mikael with the idea for both
clean and growl vocals. He worked on it during his off-time recording
the new Opeth album. I could not be any happier with the results."
Writing for ANGL began early in 2007 and picked up momentum after the
Emperor U.S. performances early last summer. "I knew to a greater
extent where I wanted to go with this album, though I feel all albums
are a kind of struggle to overcome. Regardless of how many you make,
it never gets any easier." An aggressive schedule to complete the
album, in addition to recording projects for Hardingrock (in which
Ihsahn also contributes) and Starofash (released February 26), Ihsahn
completed album tracking in early December. With mixing and mastering
completed early this year, the musician is already starting promotion
with for the album; efforts that will take up much of his time over
the coming months leading up to album release.
Track listing for ANGL (not in running order) is: "Alchemist,"
"Elevator," "Malediction," "Misanthrope," "Monolith," "Morningstar,"
"Scarab," "Threnody" and "Unhealer."
Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) Award Nominee Ihsahn (born Vegard
Tveitan) began playing music at a very early age. As a teenager, his
friendship with Tomas Haugen (a.k.a. Samoth) would trigger the start
of his music career -- one that to date includes over fifty individual
recordings, five high-profile Emperor European tours (the band
reaching U.S. shores on only three occasions) and the respect of fans
and peers worldwide.

-What's up with the rock 'n' food all of a sudden? Not quite a month
ago I was blabbing here about Kuma's Corner -- the Chicago spot that
serves burgers named after metal bands, and is mentioned in the Lair
Of The Minotaur press release above -- and now the other day I saw an
article on a new hot dog joint called Rockstar Dogs. It's located at
801 N. Ashland in Chicago and the bare-bones Web site is
http://www.Rockstar-Dogs.com/ . I haven't been there but according to
the article I read, and online sources, Rockstar is decorated with
musical instruments, classic rock photos, and a flat screen TV showing
videos, and serves items such as The Kiss (a chili-cheese "masked" hot
dog) and The Tommy Lee (a footlong, natch). There's also a stripper
pole that female patrons can try out, to earn free food and a chance
at getting their picture posted on the establishment's Web site.
-My new favorite dumb lyric comes from Iron Savior's "The Omega Man,"
off of last year's MEGATROPOLIS: "The sun is up, a lonely man roams an
empty city / omnipresent death is all around." Um, yeah, isn't that
what "omnipresent" means? :) And yes, I probably should've chosen all
the lyrics to "Cyber Hero" from the same album -- a blindingly goofy
ode to video games -- but this one just cracks me up on so many
different levels. For me it's on par with Sammy Hagar's "It's a fact,
and you know that it's true" and Ratt's "You broke my heart in pieces
but I got the glue to glue it." Classics, all of 'em.
-Now in my current playlist: Iron Savior - MEGATROPOLIS (Dockyard 1),
Fall Out Boy - INFINITY ON HIGH (Island), Doro - ALL WE ARE: THE FIGHT
(Locomotive Records), Threshold - DEAD RECKONING (Nuclear Blast
Records).

OVERDRIVE - LET THE METAL DO THE TALKING (B+) Lion Music, 2008

Roaring back after almost 24 years (!) with their third album LET THE
METAL DO THE TALKING is Overdrive, recently reformed with their
classic lineup minus original vocalist Pelle Thuresson. I rate their
1984 opus SWORDS AND AXES as an underground gem, and one certainly
worth seeking out, but damned if these guys haven't come back with an
album almost as good. LET THE METAL DO THE TALKING is unabashed
traditional '80s metal with no hint of modern influences in the music,
only an updated production distancing it sonically from their earlier
work. On tracks like "Army Of Darkness," "Fight To The Finish,"
"Trapped Under Ice," and "Sinister Warfare," the band stuns and
impresses with killer riffs, old-school solos and new member Per
Karlsson's workmanlike vocals. Half of the songs were written back in
'85, adding to the faithful sound, but you would be hard-pressed to
tell which ones were written way back when and which were penned
recently. Frankly, Per's vocals are going to require a bit of
acclimation for some listeners, and the updated production polishes
away an element of the heaviness found on SWORDS AND AXES, but overall
LET THE METAL DO THE TALKING is one kick ass slab of authentic metal.
Highly recommended to ye olde metalheads!

WHITESNAKE - ALL FOR LOVE (SINGLE) (B+) SPV/Steamhammer, 2008
3 tracks, RT: 15:18

GOOD TO BE BAD -- due out next month -- is the first "proper"
Whitesnake studio album since 1989's SLIP OF THE TONGUE. Only front
man David Coverdale remains, but the signature sound of the '80s is
still present. Now joined by guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach,
bassist Uriah Duffy, keyboardist Timothy Drury, and drummer Chris
Frazier, Coverdale appears -- if the three tracks on display here are
a true representation anyway -- to have on his hands an album that
will undoubtedly please long-suffering fans of the band's climactic
SLIDE IT IN/WHITESNAKE/SLIP OF THE TONGUE era. "All For Love" is a
signature classy rocker, "All I Want All I Need" is a husky-voiced,
melodic love song, and "Lay Down Your Love" is a slithering, bluesy
stomper with start-stop riffing that's all about...uh...you know. As
I said, the faithful should be well pleased.
