-Judas Priest To Participate In First In-Store Signings In 25 Years
With anticipation building towards the June 17 release date of Judas
Priest's double disc concept album, NOSTRADAMUS (and forthcoming
"Metal Masters" tour), three band members -- singer Rob Halford and
guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing -- will be participating in
the group's first in-store signings in over two decades. The in-stores
will be occurring over two days -- Thursday, May 8 at Hot Topic at the
Plaza at King of Prussia (in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania) and on
Friday, May 9 at Vintage Vinyl (in Woodbridge, New Jersey).
The Hot Topic signing begins at 6 p.m., and will be limited to 500
people (on a first come/first serve basis). In order to receive a
wristband, fans must pre-order NOSTRADAMUS or purchase any Judas
Priest CD or T-shirt in the store, beginning May 2. Fans will also
receive a free poster. The band will sign one item per customer -- no
guitars please. For more information about the Hot Topic signing, call
(610) 265-6610.
The Vintage Vinyl signing also begins at 6 p.m., and again, will be
limited to the first 500 fans. Fans will be able to pre-order
NOSTRADAMUS (regular or deluxe version), and will receive a wristband
that gets them access to this exclusive event. They will also receive
a poster, which they can get signed by Rob, Glenn and K.K. The guys
will only be signing one item per customer -- again, no guitars please
-- and there will be one wristband per customer. For more information
about the Vintage Vinyl signing, call (732) 225-7717.
"The NOSTRADAMUS album -- above all others -- is perhaps the one I'm
most proud of," says Glenn Tipton. "Whilst in essence and character
still very much Judas Priest, it has afforded the opportunity to
explore areas of classical and operatic dimensions that the band
normally wouldn't. As a guitarist and writer it has inspired me to
greater heights and opened new doors to intrigue and passion. From
start to finish it will take you through a magical experience filled
with light, shade, drama, melody and emotion, that reflects this
unique man and his life. Why did we choose Nostradamus? We didn't --
he chose us. We feel it was meant to be!"

-Heavy MTL, June 21 & 22, 2008 At Parc Jean-Drapeau -- Montreal
Gillett Entertainment Group is proud to announce the creation of Heavy
MTL, a unique event in North America, which will take place on
Saturday June 21st and Sunday June 22nd at Parc Jean-Drapeau. Loud,
intense, heavy, Heavy MTL will feature many hard rock and metal bands
performing on different stages located outdoors on the breathtaking
site that is the Saint-Hélène Island.
To launch this premier new Metal event we are delighted to announce
that we are bringing metal legends Iron Maiden and their "Somewhere
Back In Time Tour World Tour" to Montreal for the opening day,
Saturday June 21nd. "Maiden Mania" has been gripping countries around
the planet as tickets for the tour fly out of box offices everywhere.
In Canada alone the major arena in Toronto sold out three months in
advance and recently it took just a couple of days for Maiden to sell
out all 60,000 tickets for their five shows in Western Canadian
arenas! And Heavy MTL now gives metal fans in Eastern Canada a chance
to see this inspirational band and spectacular show outdoors in a
wonderful setting.
The "Somewhere Back In Time – World Tour 08" was inspired by Maiden's
recently released DVD, LIVE AFTER DEATH (EMI Records) which debuted at
No. 2 in Canada's DVD chart. Filmed and recorded over four memorable
nights at Long Beach Arena on the "Powerslave Tour" in 1985, this has
long been a benchmark for rock concert videos and live albums, and the
CD remains one of the biggest-selling live albums ever with sales in
excess of six million worldwide. This tour revisits the band's history
by focusing almost entirely on their classic '80s period in both
choice of songs played and the stage set, which is based around the
legendary Egyptian Production of the 1985 "Powerslave Tour" as
portrayed on the LIVE AFTER DEATH DVD. This is arguably the most
elaborate and spectacular show the band has ever presented.
Says founder member Steve Harris; "The Province of Quebec has always
been close to our hearts and I think we have played there on every
tour we have ever done, going right back to Le Club in Montreal in
1981 and many many times since -- we always ensure its on our tour
schedule! So you could say we feel very much at home there and we have
always had a fantastic welcome from the fans, who are without question
right up there with the best and loudest on the planet. This region
was the first in North America to really get behind us and has always
been incredibly loyal to us so it's an honour for us to be headlining
the opening of this tremendous new metal festival for our fans there.
For the launch of Heavy MTL we will bring along the full show with all
of Eddie's toys which we couldn't get on our plane during the recent
first leg which included Toronto. We very much look forward to seeing
all our fans in Quebec Province, including those maniac Beavers!!!"
Headlining on Sunday June 22 will be Mötley Crüe, who, since the
band's beginnings in 1981, have become one of rock music's most
notorious acts. Multi-platinum albums like GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS and DR.
FEELGOOD have cemented the group's place in rock royalty and produced
a string of top ten hits. The band also immortalized its exploits in
the 2001 autobiography "The Dirt," which made the New York Times
Bestseller List.
Following a press conference held in Los Angeles, Mötley Crüe revealed
that the original members of the band (Bass guitarist Nikki Sixx,
drummer Tommy Lee, lead guitarist Mick Mars and singer Vince Neil)
will go on tour this summer as part of "Crüe Fest 08'." During the
press conference, Mötley Crüe also announced that they will release
SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES, their first new studio album recorded with all
of the original band members in over a decade, on June 17th.

-Z Records News
Z Rock 08 Update
As everyone is aware the credit crunch has been hitting all aspects of
the western world's economy. During the last 9/10 months we have seen
events such as Firefest, ProgPower, Thunderfest and many others either
cut back or completely cancelled. Z Rock 08 is not alone and despite
the efforts of the team behind the show this year's event has been
hit. As of Thursday last week the entire Saturday was going to be
pulled, however after consultation with the acts and other people
involved the decision was made to stage the show for the sake of the
scene -- the last thing it needs is another festival disappearing. We
were on target to make a £9,000 loss; this has been reduced to a
possible loss of £3,000 by not bringing Black 'N Blue over for the
show.
Before anyone points the finger, no tickets have been sold via our
site since April 22 -- that's two full weeks and sales from the
outlets have been low during that time when they should be flying. To
compensate for the loss we will be offering a £5 refund to those who
paid the full price for their Saturday ticket and £3 to those bought
theirs at the discounted rate. A simple form will be given out on the
Saturday for people to complete with details of their ticket numbers
and such payments will be made when we return to our offices on May
22.
Friday's lineup is as advertised and Saturday's remains the same minus
Black 'N Blue. On a positive we are currently looking into the
possibility of touring Black 'N Blue during the autumn to support
their forthcoming album.

-Mellotrön To Headline Its "Concert For A Cause" Extravaganza At The
Emerald Theatre May 29th
Tiles, Silent Lapse Also Scheduled At Sabrina Black Foundation Benefit
Show
DETROIT -- Mellotrön, Detroit's Progressive Metal, will unleash its
imminent sonic destruction for a good cause, when it brings the full
brunt of its prog metal prowess to the Emerald Theatre (31 North
Walnut Street Mt. Clemens, MI 48043 -- (586) 913-1920) on May 29 at 8
p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sabrina Black
Foundation. The evening of great entertainment kicks off at 9 p.m.,
with legendary progressive rockers Tiles opening the festivities,
followed by Lansing's own Silent Lapse. Mellotrön will take the stage
at 11 p.m. Tickets for the event are available from the bands and at
the Emerald Theatre box office. This is an all-ages show.
Millions of lives are affected by cancer each year, including the band
members of Mellotrön, which is why the band decided it was time to put
their music to work for the good of the community and help the Sabrina
Black Foundation.
"Cancer hits far too close to home," said Mellotrön bassist Bryan
Paxton. "My brother fought off his cancer through terrible, life-
changing chemotherapy back in 2005. So when an opportunity arose to
make a difference, it was a no-brainer to contact a great local
organization like the Sabrina Black Foundation."
Mellotrön is the brainchild of Detroit-based guitarist, vocalist and
metal innovator Tony Piccoli. Joining Piccoli is a super group of
Detroit-area progressive and metal artists, including former Tiles
drummer Pat DeLeon, who has recorded with his former band on the Magna
Carta and InsideOut music labels, as well as touring Europe as the
opening act for Dream Theater. Paxton, also a member of Detroit metal
bands JustDefy and Miles Beyond, solidifies the rhythm section.
Keyboardist/vocalist Pete Hopersberger, from the Detroit progressive
rock group Space Nelson, adds his considerable musical talents, and
guitarist/vocalist Scott Thompson completes the Mellotrön lineup.
Thompson, also an established solo artist, has played numerous
instruments in several Michigan groups.
The Sabrina Black Foundation was established in 2006, in memory of
Sabrina, late wife of WRIF's Steve Black. Sabrina had fought Hodgkin's
lymphoma for more than six years. The Sabrina Black Foundation raises
money and finds cancer patients through local hospitals. The hospitals
select candidates, and the foundation contacts them to let them know
that an angel has heard their prayers, and then pays off their entire
hospital bill. Instead of trying to help everyone a little, the
Sabrina Black Foundation "changes one life at a time." The lives of
those people helped by the foundation are changed forever.

-Kory Clarke Is Trouble's New Front Man
[Note: This is from MySpace. - Tim]
"Amidst many rumors it has been announced earlier today that Kory
Clarke of Warrior Soul will be the new front man, effective
immediately.
"The news comes as the band returns to their Chicago homes following a
successful European Tour. Trouble founder/guitarist Rick Wartell
explains: 'It was a mutual agreement, you need to follow your heart in
this business and if you are not into it 100% then it is time to move
on. We all felt it was the best thing for all parties involved. There
are no hard feelings. I'm sure Eric (Wagner) will continue making
music and we wish him the best.' He went on to say, 'We are very
excited to have Kory step in and take over the vocals for Trouble.
He's been one of my favorite front men in this industry for many
years. He will add a new dimension that we can use. It's not like we
just picked out some guy to fill in, this is one of rock's most
dynamic and creative front men in the industry. I know that when
Trouble fans get a taste of what Kory does, they will not be
disapointed at all. Anyone who has seen Kory with Warrior Soul already
knows what to expect, and it's awesome.'"
To catch an early glimpse of the new lineup, sign up for the Trouble
live webcast, July 11th, 2008 ( http://www.deeprockdrive.com/ ) and

-Farflung Release Date And Killer New Video
May 6th is the official street date for the brand new A WOUND IN
ETERNITY CD release from Farflung in the United States. The CD will be
released in the United Kingdom and Europe on May 12th. There will be
Deluxe Edition CD and a Deluxe Gatefold Double Vinyl versions coming
later in May.
To celebrate the release of this spectacular album the band has posted
a video for the first single "Endless Drifting Wreck" on YouTube.
Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHSux581CGQ
"...the record is a surprisingly enticing sophomore effort from
Farflung, who make excellent use of guitar layering for that heavy-
mellow effect, all reverbed out and soundwaves crashing against the
stars and whatever other pot-laced space metaphors you want to put to
it." - Metal Maniacs
"Farflung have been at it often and long enough that by this point
their jacked-up space boogie -- still audibly in debt to the patron
saints of the whole shebang, Hawkwind, but no less enjoyable for that
reason -- gives exactly what anyone who favors the approach would
want..." - All Music Guide
"Let your mind wander and you'll see the cosmos unfold before your
eyes. This is an interstellar album and will have the mind soaring."
4/5 - Peacedogman
"...it is just enough to keep even the casual listener interested and
the Space Rock fan searching for more!" - Gasp, Etc.

*** FROM THE MEGA-VAULT ***

by Keith Abt (KeithAbt@...)
-This Week: "The Prodigal Columnist Returns..."
Greetings from New Jersey! It's been a long cold winter, but spring
has finally sprung, and so have my allergies (Ah-CHOO!)... so what
finally convinced me to come out of my burrow, "Groundhog Day" style,
and turn in a "Mega-Vault" column for the first time in... well, let's
just say "a while?" Lots of stuff! Read on to see what's been
percolating in my tiny little mind of late...
...Does Warrior Soul mastermind Kory Clarke ever sleep? Over the past
few weeks there have been constant surprises emerging from his camp.
His all new Warrior Soul lineup remains an active entity that is about
to release a live CD (recorded in London in 2007) on Cargo Records in
Europe. In addition to that, Clarke is also involved (as a drummer and
producer) with the NYC based '70s style dirt-rock band The Stoned, who
have just self-released a four-song debut EP. I had just gotten my
hands on the Stoned EP and was about to review it for Detritus, but
before I could even get my keyboard warmed up, the news came out of
nowhere that legendary Chicago doom/psych-metal overlords Trouble have
named Clarke as a surprise replacement for their departing vocalist
Eric Wagner! Even though my initial reaction to this was "What the
f**king f**k?," I'm a huge fanboy of both sides of that equation so
I'm stoked to eventually see what a Clarke-led Trouble will sound
like. I personally was disappointed in Trouble's last studio outing,
2007's SIMPLE MIND CONDITION (which apparently will never receive a
U.S. release the way things are going -- trust me, you're not missing
much) so perhaps a transfusion of new blood will do the band some
good. For now, you can hear some samples of the Warrior Soul live disc
at their MySpace ( http://www.myspace.com/warriorsoulinfo ), check out
The Stoned at THEIR MySpace ( http://www.myspace.com/thestonedrock ),
and keep up with Trouble happenings at http://www.newtrouble.com/ .
Hopefully I will have my review of The Stoned EP completed sometime
soon.
...One of my favorite CD pickups of late has been the long-overdue
reissue of Crimson Glory's self-titled album from 1986, released by
the fine folks at Metal Mind Productions. The reason I am so happy to
finally have this one on my CD shelf is because of the inclusion of
the long-lost bonus track, "Dream Dancer." Back in the Dark Ages (i.e.
the '80s) I bought the first C.G. album on cassette (released by the
tiny indie PAR Records label), and not only was "Dream Dancer" the
lead-off track on that version of the album, it was also my favorite
song ON the album. When Roadrunner Records picked up the band and
released the album in the rest of the world, they inexplicably dropped
"Dream Dancer" from the record (it wound up buried on the B-side to a
European single of "Lonely" if memory serves) and all subsequent CD
pressings of the album have been missing that track. (They changed the
running order of the rest of the songs too, for reasons I have never
been able to figure out.) Therefore I have spent the last 20+ years
boycotting any and all CD versions of this album hoping that someday
it would receive the proper reissue treatment and "Dream Dancer" would
be reinstated. My prayers have finally been answered!! Massive hails
to Metal Mind Productions for finally righting this grievous wrong, so
I can finally send my well-worn cassette copy off to a well deserved
retirement!! I'd be even happier if "Dream Dancer" was the leadoff
track on the CD just the way it used to be, but I'll take what I can
get after all this time. :)
...I've recently developed an addiction to CDBaby.com, which is fast
becoming my favorite site to buy indie metal and hard rock CDs. I've
had to limit my surfing of their site because every time I visit I
find another dozen or so titles that I can't live without. If it
weren't for this addiction, however, I never would've found out that
my old New Jersey favorites Bad Biscut have just released a new odds-
and-ends compilation CD called WE STILL BELIEVE THE HYPE on Main Man
Records (info here: http://www.mainmanrecords.com/bb-wsbth.html ). For
those who missed out on this sadly defunct combo during their heyday
in the early '90s (which would be just about everybody not from New
Jersey, I guess), Bad Biscut were once tipped to be the "next big
thing" out of the Garden State. I saw these punk fueled hard rockers
quite a few times during my college days and they were one hell of a
fun live act, resembling a love child of Guns N' Roses and the Ramones
doing bong hits with Skid Row. The Biscut paid their dues in and
around South Jersey for a few years, recorded a cover of AC/DC's
"Highway To Hell" that won an MTV contest and signed a deal with the
then-new Cathedral Records label (owned by Jon Bon Jovi's cousin, Tony
Bongiovi) to release their debut album, THE AMERICAN DREAM?, in 1994.
Despite such high powered connections it never truly "happened" for
them, however and the Biscut fizzled out by the midpoint of the
decade. WE STILL BELIEVE THE HYPE contains 22 long-lost recordings
from the Biscut vaults, including the aforementioned AC/DC cover as
well as versions of George Michael's "Faith" (which pre-dates, and is
far superior to, Limp Bizkit's take on the same song), the Partridge
Family's "I Think I Love You," (!!) and many other rare and unreleased
cuts. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my copy in the mail and
will be reviewing this one as soon as it's in my hands. Further info/
sample tunes can be found at the Bad Biscut MySpace page (
http://www.myspace.com/badbiscut1 ). Main Man Records also has a
deluxe reissue of the Biscut's THE AMERICAN DREAM debut in the works,
containing all the tracks from two separate pressings of the album
plus some extra goodies. It's not out yet but you can keep an eye on
this space and I'll holler when it hits the streets, or you can just
check this link every so often:

...One more quick blurb and I'm out. Want to see my ugly mug in a
movie? Awhile back I found out from an old friend that my brother and
I make quick cameo appearances in a documentary film about the Kiss
fan experience called "Kiss Loves You," so of course I had to track
down a copy of the DVD (released thru MVD Visual) for myself. The
flick was shot in bits and pieces by filmmaker Jim Heneghan over
nearly a decade, focusing mainly on two of the major phenomena in Kiss
fandom during the 1990s: the development of the local Kiss Conventions
(later known as "Expos") held in New Jersey every year, and several
Kiss tribute bands that were making the local rounds at the same time.
I was a regular Kiss Expo attendee for five or six years back then and
also went to a ton of tribute band shows so I suppose it was
inevitable that I'd turn up in this movie somewhere. There's only a
brief shot of me and my brother on line outside the Rothman Center in
Hackensack, New Jersey to get into the 1995 Kiss Expo, but if that's
not enough to get you to buy the DVD (haha), it turned out to be a
pretty damn good movie as well. Not only did it bring back a lot of
memories for yours truly, it also provides an entertaining look into a
rather strange period in KISStory... this is really what it was like
being one of the diehard, long suffering Kiss fans before the big
reunion shot the band back to the top. If this sounds like it'd be
your cup of java, the film is available to rent via Netflix or to buy
via Amazon or other online retailers. I've also posted a slightly more
in-depth review of the film at the Internet Movie Database (IMDB),
which you can check out here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1102243/usercomments-1 . By the way: If
you watch the movie, I'm the guy lined up outside the Kiss Expo who
opens up his denim jacket to show off his Kiss T-shirt and gives a
thumbs up, my brother is the longhaired guy next to me who shouts a
sarcastic "Heyyyy, HEAVY METAL DUDE!" at the camera. :)
...I guess that'll do it for this long overdue reopening of "The Mega-
Vault," hope you had as much fun reading it as I did writing it, and I
will try not to stay away so long next time... Peace out, Boy and Girl
Scouts!!

-We've never really covered Nine Inch Nails in Detritus, but I guess I
should mention the band's new album THE SLIP just came out and is
available for free at http://www.nin.com/ . I haven't checked it out
myself but it's apparently got 10 tracks and is available in "four
digital configurations." CD and vinyl versions of the disc will
surface in July.
-Further to Keith's column and Kiss stuff... For the last few weeks as
I walk to work I've been seeing this dude walking the opposite way
wearing a Kiss denim jacket with a huge ROCK AND ROLL OVER patch on
the back. He looks like a regular suit 'n' tie guy except for the
jacket. Good for him. :)

PAUL GILBERT - SILENCE FOLLOWED BY A DEAFENING ROAR (A) Shrapnel
Records, 2008
11 tracks, RT: 42:18

Fans of high-octane shred must be living right; scarcely two years
since the excellent GET OUT OF MY YARD and Paul Gilbert is already
back with another killer instrumental outing with the interestingly
titled SILENCE FOLLOWED BY A DEAFENING ROAR. Paul excels at crafting
very listenable pieces that aren't just vehicles for mindless displays
of technique, examples of which can be found all over this fine disc.
Check out "Eudaimonia Overture" with its pyrotechnic intro followed by
positively buoyant rhythms, uplifting melodies as well as that
patented ripping guitar work we've all come to know and love, the
funky groove of "Bronx 1971" or Paul's return to his Racer X style on
"The Gargoyle." It's not all "amps on 11" however, as Paul matches
Satriani's ability to tone down and play beautiful lyrical lines on "I
Cannot Tell A Lie," and pulls off a moving cover of Elvis Costello's
"I Still Have That Other Girl." Still haven't had enough guitar? Crank
up "Paul Vs. Godzilla" (gotta love that title!) for a fittingly note-
filled finale sure to leave the faithful with a big smile. Great
production, tight performances by Paul's band and a lean, mean running
time make this one another winner you'll be happy to get your ears
around...

RPWL - THE RPWL EXPERIENCE (B-/C+) Tempus Fugit/Inside Out Music/SPV,
2008
10 tracks, RT: 1:07:01
RPWL's music is on the outside range of what I usually listen to so
you'll have to take that as a caveat when considering the rating. THE
RPWL EXPERIENCE starts off with the very cool riff of "Silenced" and
it's one of the better tracks here, making good use of contrast and
the band's politically charged lyrics. Dylan's "Masters Of War" is
injected with a healthy dose of Pink Floyd for a cool version, and the
guys get relatively heavy on the menacing track "Stranger." Elsewhere
we have some rather weird stuff however, such as a goofy parody on the
appropriately titled "This Is Not A Prog Song." Other decent cuts
include the ultra-sensitive ballad "River" and modern rocker "Choose
What You Want To Look At." A little too much mellow strumming and
relaxed vocals on some of the other tracks bringing down the energy
level but this may be a plus for some. RPWL have always revealed a
huge Pink Floyd influence in their music, but on this new one they
seem to want to give equal time to the late '60s with some Beatles-
inspired melodies as well as a nod to current outfits such as Coldplay
and Radiohead. Like I say, not really my thing but these guys make it
work; one of those albums where the score could easily go up
considerably if you're into this style, and if so by all means...
