-Power Quest Welcomes Guitarist Bill Hudson
U.K.-based melodic power metal act Power Quest are proud to announce
that former Cellador and current Coldera guitarist Bill Hudson has
been recruited into the Power Quest ranks and is set to form an
incredible twin-guitar partnership with Andrea Martongelli.
Steve Williams comments: "I'm absolutely ecstatic with this news! I've
been good friends with Bill for a couple of years now and we have
often talked about working together in some shape or form and now we
have the perfect opportunity to do just that. As well as being a
fantastic guitarist, Bill is also a great songwriter, too, which means
this is going to benefit the band on a number of levels. Welcome
aboard, brother!"
Bill adds: "We've always talked about doing something together at some
point, but the closest we've got to it was my guest solo (in the song
'The Vigil') on the new record. When I left Cellador, I had no idea I
would end up being in Power Quest. So I'm really excited about it, as
it's a great band, my style will fit right in and they have one of the
best guitarists in current metal, Andrea Martongelli. It'll be a
pleasure to be the other 50% of this killer guitar duo! I look forward
to meeting the fans during the MASTER OF ILLUSION tour!"
Power Quest are currently booking a U.K. tour for later this year to
promote their latest release, MASTER OF ILLUSION, which has
successfully been launched worldwide via Napalm Records / Avalon
Marquee (Japan). The album has already been nominated in numerous
magazines and Web zines for album of the year and shot right to number
8 in the Japanese HMV charts in the second week after the release.

-Exodus Update
Exodus Re-signs To Nuclear Blast!
Taking a break from writing the band's follow-up to 2007's THE
ATROCITY EXHIBITION: EXHIBIT A in his home in northern California,
guitarist/songwriter Gary Holt shares the latest slab of good news
from the Exodus camp:
"Hey all, just kicking back at home for a bit before we head over to
Europe late July, but I am pleased to announce that Exodus have re-
signed to Nuclear Blast! We have been working on this since last
October and I am happy to say that we'll continue our relationship
with the greatest label in metal for some time to come! It's good to
be with a label that we can call home after so many different stops
along our career and we are psyched to move even further into the
future. There is no telling how heavy things can get!"
THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION: EXHIBIT B is due out later this year.
Classic Thrash Video Lessons
MetalKult.com has just posted an exclusive video guitar lesson with
Exodus' Gary Holt and Lee Altus.
The footage was filmed when the West Coast thrash vets came to New
York to play a show on February 7, 2008, at B.B. King's Blues Club &
Grill in support of their latest album, THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION:
EXHIBIT A.
In the lesson, the two guitarists demonstrate how to play a few riffs
from their greatest hits, including "Toxic Waltz" and "Bonded By
Blood," "Pirahna," "No Love," "And Then There Were None," "Fabulous
Disaster," as well as from new tracks like "Children Of A Worthless
God" and "Funeral Hymn."

-Lacuna Coil Wants YOU For Their New DVD!
Italian Goth Metal icons Lacuna Coil are currently working on their
new album -- but, they are taking some time to put together a very
special project to be released this winter! The band has launched a
YouTube contest asking their fans to contribute to a new DVD that will
act as a retrospective of their KARMACODE cycle. Three favorite clips
will be featured in the DVD!
From the band:
As most of you know we're at home right now writing songs for our new
album. However, we're also working on something else very special as
well -- and we want YOU to be a part of it....
We're putting together a special DVD that will be all about the
KARMACODE album and all of the tours that we have done over the past
two years.
And of course all of the fun and good times that we had with all of
you while we were out there promoting KARMACODE! We know we have some
of the best fans in the world and feel we have to celebrate you by
giving you a feature on the DVD.
We have created this YouTube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/lacunacoil , so you can send us stuff that you
have filmed that relates to either Lacuna Coil or KARMACODE.
This can be anything like for example:
- Any of our live performances. We would love to see videos from the
American Stone Sour or Rob Zombie tours.
- You meeting us and hanging out with us.
- Home made videos for songs from KARMACODE.
- Videos of KARMACODE related artwork.
- KARMACODE karaoke sessions with your crazy friends.
Just make sure you keep the following things in mind:
- Please read through the terms and conditions in the column on the
left of our YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/lacunacoil . THIS
IS VERY IMPORTANT!
- Your footage must feature in its headline: Lacuna Coil official DVD
competition
- Only use footage that you shot yourself. So no borrowing images or
music from other people or bands. We know this is very tempting, but
we want your own creativity and footage with our music. If a clip
features other people's work we cannot use it.
- Please make sure we can contact you if your feature gets picked for
the DVD, because we will need a "high resolution" version that is
suitable for DVD and we need to officially clear the usage with you.
- Please send in your material before June 30th, this is the drop dead
deadline.
Sending us your clips is easy: Just upload your clip to your YouTube
account, then add it to our channel by making it a video-comment our
short introductory clip.
Obviously, others will comment on your clip and the most popular ones
end up on the DVD. So, make sure you tell your friends about this!
We are looking forward to seeing your clips and looking back on some
of the precious moments we shared with you.
Thank you everyone! This will be fun! (LACUNA COIL, June 2008)

-Sound And Fury Support Self-Titled Release With Live Dates With Less
Than Jane And Airbourne And Debut Video For "18" Online
Toronto Canada's Sound And Fury is undeniably all about the rock, as
heard throughout their self-titled debut full-length album, SOUND AND
FURY, due June 24th via Rebel Youth Records/MRI-RED Distribution. And
the group's live show is just as in-your-face -- a point which will
surely be proven when the group hits the road in the U.S. with Less
Than Jake in July, and in Canada with Airbourne the following month.
Lead singer Luke Metcalf exclaims, "Less Than Jake are a great band
and we're really, really excited -- these shows should be high
voltage! We're totally psyched to appear on the same stage as
Airbourne and stand up for the wildest, wickedest, most kick ass thing
ever created by humans -- rock n' roll. This is going to be a f*cking
rampage!"
Sound And Fury (which also includes guitarists Daz and Griffin,
bassist John Kerns, and drummer Chris Avalos) is all about power
chords, no-bullsh*t rock 'n roll, and total sonic assault, as
evidenced by the lead-off turbo-charged single and video from SOUND
AND FURY, "18." To view the video for "18" online, go to
http://www.soundandfury.com/rebelyouth/videos.htm .
The Sammy Ray Welch-directed video shoot for "18" recently took place
in an abandoned police station in Toronto, and featured lighting
design input from A.J. Pen, who is known for his work with Linkin
Park. "It was a blast!" blares out vocalist Luke Metcalf. "We shot it
in an abandoned cop shop and got totally wasted."
"We are all huge fans of 1970's rock and punk. AC/DC were at their
peak between '76-'80, same with The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and The
Misfits, and of course Zeppelin and Sabbath were at their best earlier
in the decade. This music was ferocious! Dangerous! That's what we're
all about, creating no-bullsh*t rock n' roll to get down and dirty and
party your ass off to!"
In addition to perfectly capturing their raw power on album, the group
has been gaining fans by the truckload by also opening up for Canada's
leading pop-punk band, Sum 41, throughout the great white north (as
well as the U.K.). The group plays stripped down straight up rock n'
roll and was praised by PunkTV.ca for "combining iconoclastic AC/DC
thunder, Misfits brooding, the raw impetuousness of the Pistols and
the charismatic anthemic song styling's of the Ramones."
Metcalf promises that Sound And Fury will never attempt to "save the
world" with their music. But rather, will continue to party and rock
as hard as humanly possible. "We don't take ourselves that seriously.
This is about going out and getting crazy, for kids who want to go out
and have a good time. I wanna party with the kids who live for rock 'n
roll -- no bullsh*t, down 'n dirty, ferocious rock 'n roll. People who
really sincerely live for that music and don't give a sh*t about
anything else. Basically I write about myself; who I am, what I've
experienced. I write about what its like to be a wild wolf living in a
culture of sheep." That said, the forthcoming Sound And Fury/Airbourne
pairing is bound to be one wicked rock n' roll party!
Less Than Jake/Sound And Fury tour dates:
July 16th - New Orleans - HOB

-Finally A Solid Reason To Ruin Your Life!
PHOENIX, AX & TORONTO, CAN -- What happens when you team up the mouth
of the metal world and the mouth of the desert? You get an Internet
television show to end all others... The world's leading metal
publication, Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, and metal know-it-all and
smart ass Eric Braverman have teamed up to bring the world "The
Greatest Music Ever Created And How It Ruined Our Lives."
Raising the bar for web metal programming, "The Greatest Music Ever
Created And How It Ruined Our Lives" will feature Braverman
interviewing a variety of metal superstars and notable up and comers
with his unique style and undeniable wit. The idea for the show,
according to Braverman, came about because, "It's the greatest music
ever created yet it does not exist on Jay Leno, Conan, Oprah or Bill
O'Reilly, simply by listening to metal music, you are shunned and
feared. Apply for a job in a As I Lay Dying T-shirt and you're not
getting it. No one on 'American Idol' ever sings Priest or DragonForce
songs, Metallica doesn't do halftime shows at ballgames, yet." Eric
continues, "Our show will help the world get to know these metal
people and their metal way of looking at their world one power chord,
one beer, one head bang, one brave word and one bloody knuckle at a
time. With huge laughs and gasps every episode we might just get
Maiden in a parade or Slayer playing your country's national anthem.
If you think you know metal you ain't heard or seen nothin' like
this." He finishes up by declaring, "Thank God metal ruined my life or
I might have ended up another U2, Dave Matthews or worse casualty.
Never knowing the power of Sabbath, Job For A Cowboy, Thin Lizzy, Lamb
Of God or Machine Head." Eric then got in touch with Tim Henderson,
the brains and muscle behind the planet's leading metal authority
publication, Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles. When Henderson heard the
idea and gameplan behind "The Greatest Music Ever Created And How It
Ruined Our Lives" he was instantly intrigued and onboard.
"The Greatest Music Ever Created And How It Ruined Our Lives" is set
to be broadcast on the BW&BK Web site at http://www.bravewords.com/
beginning June 13 (that would be Friday the 13th, perfectly fitting)
with guests Robert Trujillo from Metallica and metal oriented comedian
Brian Posehn. Future guests include Dave Ellefson, Lauren Harris, Ted
Nugent and many, many others.
Set to run around 20 - 30 minutes in length, each episode of "The
Greatest Music Ever Created And How It Ruined Our Lives" will strictly
focus on Eric Braverman and the featured guest, rather than a minute
or two of interview time spliced between music videos from the artists
and will be updated monthly. The episodes are also shot on high
definition camera equipment rather than going the "dude with a

-Suspyre Sign To Sensory Records; Band Auditions Going On Now
Sensory Records is proud to announce the signing of New Jersey's up-
and-coming prog metal all-stars Suspyre. Formed in 2001, these
talented, young musicians have discovered an energetic and gifted way
of combining progressive rock and symphonic metal with classical and
jazz fusion. The band's new album WHEN TIME FADES... will be released
September 30, 2008.
"We are all very excited about signing to Sensory Records," says Gregg
Rossetti, guitarist and founder/composer of Suspyre. "The high-caliber
musicians on this label have inspired our band to become what it is
and we are now proud to be a part of their family."
October 2005 marked the release of the band's first full-length album,
THE SILVERY IMAGE. Response to the album was so positive that the band
was signed to Nightmare Records and followed up with the release of
their next album, A GREAT DIVIDE, in March 2007. The album hit the top
2007 prog metal album charts on Web sites such as USA Progressive
Music, ProgPalaceRadio.com, and Beyond Ear Candy.
To further their goal to develop and perfect their fusion of varied
musical inspirations and influences, Suspyre has recorded a third
album, WHEN TIME FADES... This album is a groovier piece of art with a
bit more metallic crunch, and even more variety in the song styles,
including an acoustic piece. No one can accuse this band of being
formulaic in their composing. WHEN TIME FADES... has set the bar even
higher than the band's previous albums, not only in music creation but
also in the artwork done by Gustavo Sazes (Firewind, Dark Empire,
Mystic Prophecy), and featured guest artists that include drummer
Charlie Zeleny (Behold The Arctopus, Blotted Science, Jordan Rudess),
and female vocalist Trisha O'Keefe (Amaran's Plight).
Suspyre is also currently trying out musicians for two new positions,
seeking a drummer and a keyboardist to fill the lineup of their band
for live performances (see below for full audition info).

-Spitfire - CULT FICTION Available Now
After turning the world on fire in early 2006 with SELF-HELP, their
first new album in over five years, Spitfire return nearly two years
to the day with CULT FICTION and with it redefine what heavy is all
about.
Recorded at Trax East Studios in New Jersey by noted producer Eric
Rachel (The Dillinger Escape Plan, God Forbid, Burnt By The Sun) and
mastered by Alan Douches (you name it, he did it), this new 15-song
offering by the Virginia based quartet expands upon the fantastic
groundwork built by the band's previous release and finds the band at
the top of their game. Call it metalcore, hardcore, technical metal --
no matter what catch phrase you like best, one thing is true. CULT
FICTION is a dark and disturbing journey, both musically and visually,
and one worth spilling blood over. The cult is alive. The rapture has
begun. Don't miss out on one of 2008's heavy highlights.

*** SPECIAL REPORT ***
*
by Keith Abt (KeithAbt@...)
-Iron Maiden/Trivium/Lauren Harris
PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ
June 14, 2008
I celebrated my 38th birthday at the end of May, and my ticket to this
concert was a gift from my brother. Imagine my surprise when I opened
my birthday card from him and found a seating chart to the PNC Bank
Arts Center folded up inside, with a section circled and "YOU ARE HERE
ON JUNE 14th FOR IRON MAIDEN" written on it! I hereby nominate my
brother for Metal Sainthood. Needless to say, I spent the next three
weeks in a near-constant state of Metal Geek anticipation, chanting
"I'm going to see Iron Maiden! I'm going to see Iron Maiden! I'm going
to see Iron Maiden!" at every available opportunity. June 14th
couldn't come fast enough!!
When Saturday the 14th finally arrived, it was hotter than Hades, with
temperatures in the 90s accompanied by major humidity. When our group
of 'Edbangers (my brother and I, plus pals Glenn and Bob) arrived at
the PNC Bank Arts Center we knew it wasn't a question of "whether"
there would be a thunderstorm, it was merely a question of WHEN.
Fortunately it didn't matter to us either way, since our seats were
located under the roof of this open-air amphitheater -- though I'm
sure the sight of those darkening skies sucked for the fans that were
sitting out in the open on the lawn section.
We were surprised to hear Lauren Harris' (a.k.a. Steve Harris' baby
girl) band already on stage as we walked through the venue's gates;
apparently the start time of the gig had been bumped up a half hour
earlier to accommodate the last minute addition of Trivium to the bill
(who were only playing at the New York area dates). I didn't hear much
of Lauren's set because we were too busy wandering around the Arts
Center's main plaza, checking out the merchandise stalls, and having a
celebratory beer (at $9 a bottle!!) before finally deciding to track
down our seats. We reached them just as Lauren's set was coming to an
end, therefore I have nothing much to review, because all I heard was
"Thank you very much, New Jersey, have a good night!"
After a quick stage changeover came Trivium, a band I knew nothing
about prior to the show, and after witnessing their energetic but
uninspiring set, I'm not sure I want to know much more either. Before
coming to the concert I had asked a few of my younger co-workers what
Trivium were all about and had been advised that they were a thrash
band that leaned "heavy on the old school Metallica worship." That
sounded fine to me, but their performance wasn't anything I didn't
hear Testament or Sepultura do better 15 years ago. I'll admit, when
the band first trod onstage and started riffing I thought, "Hey, okay,
this is not bad," then the vocalist opened his mouth and ruined it.
Sorry gang, I do not now, nor will I ever, dig the WOOOOAARRRRGH vocal
style. Perhaps this band would've been a lot more interesting to my
ears if they had a more palatable vocalist. I apparently wasn't the
only one not feeling much Trivium love, as the seats were only half
full for the duration of their set, and the majority of those who were
watching them appeared as disinterested as I was. To his credit,
Trivium's vocalist did do his best to get a rise out of the thin
audience, but he was fighting an uphill battle. As far as this Maiden
crowd was concerned, Trivium was merely an obstacle to get through
before the good stuff started.
Once Trivium left the scene, the action shifted to the show going on
OFF the stage, as Mother Nature let loose with an absolute gully-
washer of a thunderstorm that was quite amazing to watch. High winds
whipped rain under the roof and onto the seating area while lightning
blazed across the sky. The thunderstorm actually got more applause and
screams than Trivium did!! It was also quite humorous to see all the
seats that had been empty during Trivium suddenly become filled as
literally thousands of patrons rushed in to get out of the downpour.
The precipitation would continue throughout the rest of the evening,
thankfully it didn't affect the show (though I heard that the same
storms knocked out power for about an hour in the middle of the R.E.M.
gig that was going on at the same time out at Jones Beach on Long
Island...haha!).
Numerous chants of "MAID-EN! MAID-EN! MAID-EN!" later, the lights went
down again and "Doctor, Doctor" blared across the PA system, which was
then replaced by the famed intro tape of Winston Churchill's speech.
When the lights came up and Iron Maiden appeared, blasting into "Aces
High," I immediately became 12 years old again. During my two previous
Maiden concerts (the BRAVE NEW WORLD and A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
tours) the sets were heavy on new material at the expense of countless
classics I had hoped to hear. I certainly had no complaints about THIS
set list, as it was all golden nuggets from Maiden's proud past. Each
time I've seen Maiden, I'm always amazed at the band's amazing onstage
energy, particularly Bruce Dickinson's... the guy is older than I am,
and watching him run, leap, hop, and charge around the stage made ME
tired!! Bruce was in fine voice this evening, showing off his
excellent chops on "Revelations," "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" (yup,
all 14 minutes of it!) and "Powerslave" in particular.
A quick side note: the highlight of this show for me was FINALLY
getting to hear Maiden perform "Run To The Hills" live. As I
mentioned, this was my third Maiden show and until tonight I had never
seen them play the song that got me into the band many years ago (when
I first saw the video on MTV as a 12-year-old). After nearly every
song I was muttering to myself "Come ON you guys, pleeeeeaaase play
'Run To The F**kin' Hills' this time!" When that famed guitar riff
finally blared out about halfway through the set and they ripped into
"Hills" at last, I damn near screamed myself hoarse as my inner
Teenage Metal Dork sang along with every precious lyric. Simply put,
it was a Metal Dream come true at last!! :)
Towards the latter half of the show I did notice that the band's sound
was starting to get muddy -- the guitars sounded a bit off and it
became harder to hear Bruce's vocals over the distortion. (Though to
his credit, Bruce powered through it with authority!) I assume that
the damp weather and oppressive humidity was finally taking its toll
on the equipment (one of the hazards of playing in an outdoor venue, I
suppose!), but it didn't distract me from enjoying such late-in-the-
set classics as "Heaven Can Wait," "Moonchild" and the underrated "The
Clairvoyant." Eddie made two onstage appearances in the show -- the
classic "Giant Mummy" Eddie popped out from behind the drum riser and
shot sparks at us during "Iron Maiden," then the Cyborg Eddie from
SOMEWHERE IN TIME wandered out during "The Clairvoyant," and he was
met with tumultuous cheering each time. Maiden finally capped off the
evening with a shower of fireworks at the close of "Hallowed Be Thy
Name," and the fans headed through the summer rain back to their cars,
sweaty but satisfied. Out of the three Maiden shows I've seen over the
years, this was definitely the best, and I heartily recommend that if
the "Somewhere Back In Time Tour" comes anywhere near your area this
summer, you should be there by any means necessary!! Thanks for a
fantastic night of metal, Iron Maiden (and also mad props to my
brother for the ticket!)... as always, Up the Irons!!

-So, I got Judas Priest's NOSTRADAMUS and Journey's REVELATION for
Father's Day. I'm a little freaked out that, so far, I may actually
prefer Journey so far... (Congrats to the band, by the way, for
reportedly selling 104,000 copies of REVELATION, enough to debut at #5
on the Billboard 200!) They're both multi-disc sets -- NOSTRADAMUS is
two CDs of new material, whereas REVELATION has a disc of new
material, a disc of re-recorded hits, and a live DVD. The Journey DVD
is really good and after watching it I am now convinced, more than
ever, that Neal Schon is simply underrated and under-appreciated as a
rock guitarist. (Schon for President in '08!!!) The new Journey stuff
is great and fun and probably what most people expected, and it makes
for a nice summer album. The Priest material -- while certainly good
-- is a little dense and just not very immediate. I don't want to say
anything stupid at this point, so let me get back to you after I've
more thoroughly digested this behemoth.
-Speaking of Priest, just to be random I pulled out the LIVE IN LONDON
DVD on Father's Day. My three-year-old and I chilled on the couch for
a while and watched part of it. It was one of those nice bonding
moments you hear about. :) But, truthfully, it was TOTALLY cool to see
my kid riveted, staring at the TV while the acoustic version of
"Diamonds And Rust" played. My wife came in to check on us and I
paused the DVD, and I immediately heard pleas of "Daddy, unfreeze the
music!!!" Very cool. That's my kid. :)
-I saw a brief article recently on a bar called Whiskey Road in
Chicago. It apparently serves fried pickles, gives out baskets of
bacon (like other places give out chips or beer nuts), offers free
"Guitar Hero" games, and shows movies. The night the reviewer/author
was there the movie was "This Is Spinal Tap!" Could this place BE any
more geared towards guys???
-In my current playlist: Judas Priest - NOSTRADAMUS (Epic), Journey -
REVELATION (Nomota LLC), King's X - XV (Inside Out Music), Crossfire -
DIRTY GAMES (Perris Records).

ATROCITY – WERK 80 II (B-) Napalm Records, 2008

Wow...this is a WEIRD album, but then Germany's Atrocity has always
been a pretty weird band if memory serves. It's been quite a while
since I've heard them, but I remember them as a death metal band with
some artsy-fartsy leanings. It would appear that over the years since
I last checked in with Atrocity, they've gotten even artsier-fartsier,
and adopted lotsa symphonic/ orchestral/gothic elements into their
sound as well. On 1997's WERK 80 (unheard by me), Atrocity had some
fun and covered a batch of classic '80s pop songs in their own bizarre
style, and now a decade later they're revisiting that concept on the
sequel, WERK 80 II. After three spins of this album, I'm chuckling to
myself and saying, "Wow...how am I going to accurately describe
this??" Let's try this...fans of the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" TV
series will remember the "Bronze" nightclub, which was where Buffy and
her pals would hang out in between fighting the forces of evil. WERK
80 II sounds like the music you'd hear blaring from the juke box in
that nightclub...or perhaps this could be a karaoke performance by
Mike Myers' old "Saturday Night Live" character "Dieter." ("I am
insane now.") Out of the 11 tracks on offer here, the songs that
worked best for me are the ones I was most familiar with. A pretty
straightforward take on Depeche Mode's "People Are People" kicks off
the album, and even though I've never been a big D.M. fan, I always
did like this particular track, and they do it justice. The cover of
Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me" (a.k.a. the theme from "The
Breakfast Club" to those of us who came of age in the '80s) is simply
freakin' brilliant, taking on the darker tones of Atrocity's sound
while still maintaining a grip on the original's pop feel. A-Ha's "The
Sun Always Shines On TV" is brightened up by the angelic vocals of
Leaves' Eyes' Liv Kristine (who happens to be married to Atrocity
front man Alexander Krull), and the Eurythmics' "Here Comes The Rain
Again" is another classic that works well in Atrocity's format. I
laughed out loud at the cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax,"
which is twisted into a techno/metal hoe-down with gruff vocals that
would probably scare the hell out of fans of the original dance
classic! I only vaguely remember Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" and I
know nothing about several of the other tunes ("Hey Little Girl,"
"Keine Heimat," "Fade To Grey" and "Forever Young" -- not the Rod
Stewart song) so those were all pretty much lost on me, but for most
of its running time, WERK 80 II was a hoot and a half. It's definitely
the most bizarre listening experience I've had thus far in 2008, and
though I bet the majority of Detritus' readers probably wouldn't touch
this album with a 10 foot dildo, those of you who are a little bit
adventurous (or have a severely ironic sense of humor) may find
yourselves pleasantly surprised by WERK 80 II, just as I was. (P.S.
Extra points for the album cover shot of fetish model Dita von Teese
with a hint of nipple showing.)

DANTESCO - PAGANO (C-) Cruz Del Sur Music, 2008

How's your Spanish? Mine is non-existent, which kinda sucks because
this CD is performed almost entirely en Espanol (only the bonus track,
"I Came From Hell," is in English). Anyway, the hype sheet that
accompanied PAGANO told me that Dantesco is Puerto Rico's "most famous
METAL band." That's news to me, but then again I wasn't even aware
that there were any metal bands calling Puerto Rico home. During the
first spin of PAGANO I wondered if reviewing this CD would be a tough
job due to the language barrier, but then quickly came to the
conclusion that it probably wouldn't have made much difference if the
band sang in English, because PAGANO was a less than impressive listen
either way. Once again I refer to the hype sheet, which claims that
Dantesco "plays a distinctive blend of EPIC DOOM METAL... in between
CANDLEMASS and MERCYFUL FATE." I hear way more Candlemass than Fate in
Dantesco's sound, and ordinarily that would suit me just fine, but
this is one of those CDs that was ruined for me as soon as the
vocalist opened his mouth. The band's bio describes frontman Erico La
Bestia as a "peculiar" figure with an "evocative" vocal style but what
they neglect to mention is that he's also quite IRRITATING. Seriously,
this guy has one of the most ANNOYING singing voices I have heard in a
VERY long time. Throughout this CD he's either warbling away like he's
starring in a dinner-theater opera production, or he's screeching like
he has a throat full of sand. If the late Luciano Pavarotti and Chris
Boltendahl of Grave Digger had a baby, its singing voice would sound
something like this. That's a damn shame because musically, Dantesco
certainly sound like they've got their you-know-what together (at
least, that's the vibe I get from what little of the band I can
actually hear underneath La Bestia's caterwauling.) The band gets to
shine a bit during the instrumental breaks and they show some neat,
chugging chops on tracks like "La Ultima Visita De Grendel" or "Su
Sangre Es Mia," but any momentum they may have is killed as soon as La
Bestia comes back to the microphone. These guys don't seem to know
when to end a song either, as each track runs just a bit too long for
its own good. All of this made it quite a chore to simply make it
through this CD just once. In the end, I was pretty bummed by my
reaction to PAGANO, because on paper Dantesco sounded quite promising.
It's not that I don't like this style of metal, and it's not the
language, it simply comes down to the fact that these guys REALLY need
to replace their vocalist as quickly as possible if they want to make
any sort of headway outside of their island home.

MARCO SFOGLI - THERE'S HOPE (A-/B+) Lion Music, 2008

Now here is a really good instrumental album from Italian musician
Marco Sfogli, perhaps best known as James LaBrie's guitarist but now
stepping out on his own with THERE'S HOPE, a collection of thoroughly
enjoyable tunes that you don't have to be a guitarist to appreciate!
THERE'S HOPE begins with the exquisite themes of "Still Hurts,"
showing Marco to be adept not only at navigating the fretboard with
flawless technique but also at strong song composition, so important
with these types of albums to keep them from becoming exercises in
self-indulgence. One of my favorites is "Seven," Marco's intuitive
playing blending beautifully with Fabio Tommasone's piano, Dino
Fiorenza's meticulous basslines, John Macaluso's inspired drumming and
Alex Argento's uplifting synth solo. Marco effectively explores a
diversity of styles, satisfying the ears on the bluesy funk of "Spread
The Disease," triumphant rocker "Sunset Lights," fusiony stunner
"Genius" and country styled closer "Texas BBQ." There are plenty of
Satriani and Petrucci-inspired licks to keep shred fans happy, but
what I like most about Marco is that he has a real talent for playing
melodically a la Shawn Lane. Marco employs a host of session musicians
to help him realize his vision (including Dali's Dilemma and Explorers
Club keyboardist Matt Guillory), but the result is quite unified and
the production is excellent. One of the very best of the new players
I've heard recently, I highly recommend this to fans of instrumental
albums who are looking for more than the latest display of highly
developed chops. To those currently working on instrumental albums:
More of this type of thing, please!

THE STONED (A) indie, 2008
4 tracks, RT: 18:00

Ever since I discovered Warrior Soul (best...band...EVER) in the early
'90s, I have been a major fanboy for their frontman, Kory Clarke and
have faithfully followed him through most of his post-W.S. projects
(including Space Age Playboys and Dirty Rig). I'm anxiously awaiting
new material from the reformed Soul, which is apparently due later
this year, though I wonder how his new status as Eric Wagner's
replacement in Trouble will affect those plans. While we wait to see
how that all pans out, Clarke has also recently surfaced in yet
another new band -- The Stoned, a New York City based four piece in
which he limits himself to playing drums and leaves the vocal duties
to Scotty T. Dimebagger (ha!). On this four track EP, The Stoned kick
out some seriously heavy 1970s style jams, inspired by such masters as
the Ramones, MC5, the New York Dolls, Humble Pie, and early Kiss.
Dimebagger's vocals are remarkably similar to Clarke's; if I didn't
know that Kory was strictly the drummer and producer on this EP, I'd
swear that it was him on the mic. All four songs are rock solid wall-
of-noise bangers, but if I had to pick a fave track I'd vote for
"Nobody Rides For Free," followed by the hilarious "Drunk Drivers From
Space." "Racing Air Force One" is no slouch either, and the closer
"Vegas Honeymoon" (written by guitarist Adam Dubin, who by the way is
an accomplished music video director who has done such classic vids as
the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right") hearkens back to '70s sleaze
rock classics like Aerosmith's "Big Ten Inch." All in all this EP was
a hell of a lot of fun that left me wishing it was more than only four
songs. This is not some snot-nosed bunch of young'uns trying to
emulate the sounds they heard in their parents' record collections;
The Stoned is a band of seasoned scene veterans who were THERE and are
dedicated to recreating that classic 1970s hard rock/metal vibe for a
new generation. On this debut they pull it off successfully, with a
ton of style, attitude, and most importantly VOLUME! I wonder how much
involvement Clarke will have with this band down the road (his plate
is kind of full right now, after all), but either way, I will be very
interested in hearing further material from this promising band in the
future.

Just in time for summer comes...my review of this disc that's been out
for quite a while already. The summer mention is important, though,
because this compilation of excellent AOR/hard rock tunes is a perfect
complement to a sunny cruise in a convertible. The men behind this
project are respected melodic rock veterans Chris Lausmann (Bonfire,
Jaded Heart) and Michael Voss (Mad Max, Casanova, Demon Drive), who
wrote, produced, and played on everything here. They brought in lead
guitarists Angel Schleifer and Tommy Denander and drummer Bertram
Engel to fill out the lineup, and as the album title implies, the disc
is then all about the throats: James Christian (House Of Lords) on
"Voodoo Woman," Jean Beauvoir (Crown Of Thorns) on "Wild Thing," Terry
Brock (Strangeways, Slamer) on "Nightingale," Dan Reed (Dan Reed
Network) on "Over And Done," Johnny Gioeli (Brunette, Hardline, Axel
Rudi Pell) on "Phoenix Rising," Harry Hess (Harem Scarem) on
"Irresistible," Goran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, Street Talk) on "China
In Your Hands," Robin Beck on "Underloved," Steve Overland (FM,
Shadowman) on "Slip Away," and Gary Barden (MSG, Statetrooper, Praying
Mantis) on "Love Is Blind." There's a nice mix of rockers and ballads,
and virtually all these songs would've been on the radio 16-18 years
ago. Personal faves include the rollicking "Wild Thing," "Voodoo
Woman" (a cool vibe overcomes a pretty weak/stupid chorus), and the
jangling/loopy "Love Is Blind." Fun stuff.
