Coalition and their benefit "Promoting Healing Through Music" October

The RB United Coalition is now the home of the long term recovery
center (LTRC) for Rancho Bernardo, assisting our fire-impacted
families and the community in rebuilding RB together. The RB United
Coalition's LTRC provides advocacy, information and referral, and
coordination of assistance services for our fire-impacted households.
The RB United Coalition has also created task forces working to
address environmental, HOA, senior, youth, and other issues impacting
the entire Rancho Bernardo Community. We recognize all of RB was
affected in many different ways by the fires and we hope to bring the
community together recover, rebuild, and heal.
RB United is one of six long term recovery centers (LTRC) in San Diego
County, created by a grant from The San Diego Foundation to aid each
fire-impacted community in its recovery process. The other long term
recovery centers are Rebuild Escondido, Ramona Fire Recovery Center,
Harris Fire Recovery Center, Fallbrook, migrant/farm workers. The
mission of these county recovery teams is to provide and coordinate
emotional, physical, financial, and spiritual resources to help
rebuild the homes and lives of families affected by the San Diego
Wildfires of October 2007.

-Virgin Steele: Re-working Metal Classics!
As one of the absolute pioneers of Heavy Metal New York based Virgin
Steele were spreading the gospel of U.S. Metal since their foundation
in 1981. Besides the brilliant guitar works the music is dominated by
the impressive and variable voice of singer and main songwriter David
DeFeis. His use of epical and classical influences is one of the
distinctive trademarks of the sound and style of Virgin Steele. During
their outstanding career the band released some highlights and
classics, every Metalhead simply has to know to call himself "metal."
Currently David DeFeis is busy working on the re-issues of THE
MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL PART I and PART II -- two of the most
highly acclaimed and respected albums in the Heavy Metal world which
still fill the "All time Top 5" lists in many magazines every month.
Also to be re-released on October 10th is 1992's LIFE AMONG THE RUINS.
This album hosts the most commercial tunes in the career of Virgin
Steele with outstanding hits like the anthemic '80s rocker "Love Is
Pain," the tender ballad "Last Rose Of Summer" and the highly
libidinous "I Dress In Black" which made it especially successful in
Germany and Japan.
To make these classics even more valueable David is currently re-
mastering them at The Hammer Of Zeus studios together with Ed Warrin
and re-working the artwork. The amount of bonus songs is not confirmed

Motorhead have been enlisted to provide their new song "Rock Out" as
the official theme music for WWE's September pay-per-view event,
"Unforgiven."® "Rock Out" is the lead track off Motorhead's eagerly-

Beginning Monday, August 18th, "Rock Out" has been heard on all WWE
television programming leading up to "Unforgiven," which airs live on

-Metal Church Preach About THIS PRESENT WASTELAND
Celebrated as one of the most outstanding metal talents of today,
Metal Church was founded in the early '80s in Seattle, WA. In 1984
they released their debut album METAL CHURCH. The album was hailed by
the critics: "The band's amazing musicality is an absolute highlight
in itself. This album will always be known as a classic of American
straight-ahead heavy metal." The strong praise of Metal Church
continued two years later with their next release THE DARK.
After the release of THE DARK, Metal Church underwent the first of
several lineup changes. Front man David Wayne left the group and was
replaced by former Heretic vocalist Mike Howe. Reinforced by Howe and
John Marshall (guitar), the riffs became heavier and the lyrics became
more ambitious with a number of songs on BLESSING IN DISGUISE and THE
HUMAN FACTOR dealing with burning political and social issues.
The '90s saw the Metal Church members pursue different and more
personal directions. As the decade was coming to an end, 1999 brought
about the highly anticipated reunion of the original Metal Church
lineup, as well as the release of the album MASTERPEACE. The release
of MASTERPEACE was followed by appearances at numerous festivals
worldwide.
The arrival of THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD album in 2004 introduced Metal
Church's new singer Ronny Munroe to the public. Respectfully
characterized by the music press as "Rob Halford meets Dio," Munroe
immediately catapulted the band to a new level in terms of vocals and
content.
Metal Church continues to be a thoroughly positive band, which you can
hear on their new album THIS PRESENT WASTELAND, being released through

Twinspirits Announce New Vocalist
After a fruitful collaboration started in 2006 and the release of the
first full-length album THE MUSIC THAT WILL HEAL THE WORLD (Lion Music
-- out now), Twinspirits part ways with the Danish singer Søren
Adamsen. The band recruited the great Swedish talent of Goran Nystrom
to complete the new lineup.
The recording sessions for Twinspirits' new album are currently in
progress and the record will be probably released in the first
semester of 2009.

Alex Masi Announces Details Of Next Three Albums And Another European
Tour In 2008
In the wake of his successful Spring 2008 tour of Italy, Grammy®
nominated uber guitarist Alex Masi is planning to go back on tour in
late fall 2008. A few stops on his multiple-city European tour will
include personal appearances and guitar clinics for Ernie Ball® /
Music Man®, who recently inked an endorsement agreement with Masi. Los
Angeles tour dates are in the works and will be announced in Sept.
2008.

Itinerary.]
Masi is back at work in his Haunted Hill Studio, with three projects
lined up. He's known as much for his classical opuses as he is for his
instrumental rock and metal compositions.
Masi explains, "Continuing in the same tradition as IN THE NAME OF
BACH, I'm doing a Vivaldi album. It's my personal homage to the
composer who represents the city of Venice to the world, my fellow
Venetian, Antonio Vivaldi. I'm choosing excerpts from the 'Four
Seasons' to some more obscure pieces...two musicians from Venice meet
across the centuries..."
Inspired by the ongoing organic connections between Jazz, Fusion and
Rock, Masi is also mixing it up with "Something I've wanted to do for
a long time." He continues, "A heavily groove oriented electronica
that features massive amounts of orgiastic guitars. I'm not afraid to
venture into the world of dance music, I like the idea of electronic
sleaze shred." While many of Masi's albums are instrumental, he will
include vocals on this project. Adds Masi, "The third project is a
rock album based on more traditional instrumentation but no less
daring in terms of envelopes being pushed and cliches thrown out the
window -- Hendrix, Cream, Zeppelin, etcetera, but with a 21st century
twist."
All the projects will be tracked and produced at Haunted Hill Studio.

O.T.R. Set To Release Debut Album On October 10th, 2008
Every now and then an idea comes along, which sounds and feels good...
O.T.R. is just such an idea: a new multinational rock group which has
brought vocalist John Lawton (ex Uriah Heep/Lucifers Friend) and
guitar player Jan Dumee (ex-Focus), together with renowned Brazilian
musicians!
John Lawton comments, "In April 2006 Jan contacted me, after leaving
Focus, with the plan to lock together his love for melodic rock and my
blues/rock influences... I liked what I heard. With Jan making my
inexpensive guitar sound like a very expensive one, I knew we were on
the right track."
O.T.R. recorded its debut album MAMONAMA in Rio De Janeiro and The
Netherlands. The mixdown was done in Brazil's foremost CD/DVD
recording studio Mosh in Sao Paulo with a release set for October
10th, 2008 on Lion Music.

Grave Digger Signs To Napalm Records

Metal band Grave Digger has joined their ranks. The band, who has been
releasing cult classics since the early '80s, signed a worldwide
record deal with the Austrian label.
Currently, the band and charismatic frontman Chris Boltendahl are
working on their new studio album BALLADS OF A HANGMAN, which will hit
the streets on January 9, 2009. A yet untitled MCD will be released as
a preview on November 28, 2008. More details cannot be revealed at
this point in time, but the band promises that the new recordings will
consist of "120% Metal." Headbangers can expect a celebration of true
classic Heavy Metal.

behind metal fusion band Ohm: currently on Tone Center Records. This

records later, Poland continues to evolve to new heights with his
progressive fusion trio Ohm:. From lush soundscapes to super

an exotic flow of notes which somehow bring order to the chaos.
Robertino Pagliari, Ohm:'s master of the fretless bass has played with
many well-known L.A. fusion artists and has become a fixture on the
elite Los Angeles fusion scene. His sassy, powerful bass lines and
technical wizardry make him one of the most innovative bass stylists
on the scene today.
Ohm:'s drummer Frank Briggs is a monster progressive fusion drummer
whose playing evokes memories of the great Tony Williams and Billy
Cobham. Briggs is a veteran session player who has worked with a
veritable "Who's Who" of progressive fusion artists. Also drumming on
CIRCUS OF SOUND is Ginger Baker's son Kofi Baker and Joel Taylor,
famous for his work with Allan Holdsworth.

Nevermore Unveils Details For THE YEAR OF THE VOYAGER DVD

suits their liking. The first DVD contains a full concert which was
filmed in Germany on October 11, 2006. The second disc contains

Warrel Dane Posts Video For "Brother" Online
The iconic voice of Nevermore, Warrel Dane, has posted a video online
for his solo debut PRAISES TO THE WAR MACHINE. The video is for the
track "Brother" and is a haunting look into Dane's childhood and
relationship with his older brother. Dane had the following to say
about "Brother":

Our Danish lads have been getting really food responses this last
month, seems to be everyone is starting to make a big fuss over them
which is fabulous news.
The band will be performing a December gig in Torvehallerne in our
hometown of Vejle on 20 December. Free admission for all.
The band are four songs into recording their next album. "The four
songs are: 'Fight' - the fastest Krackerjack song ever. A very Maiden-
like riff and lots of bombastic power. 'I Just Wanna Rock You' - a bit
funky, with hints of Aerosmith. Very '70s. 'Part Of The Show' - a very
modern sounding song, but again with a HUGE chorus. The song is about
the various "Idol" and "X-Factor" competitions that rule the TV
stations. And finally 'In A Its Glory' - as the title implies, this is
the epic! Seven minutes long with lots of dynamics," says guitarist

The bonus disc on this thing is incredible! With some crazy covers
(like "Crazy Horses" originally done by the Osmond Brothers, you know,
like Donny Osmond, and "Lemons" by the Bee Gees!) and some brilliant
original songs that for some reason didn't make the cut, this is one
of the best bonus discs Neal has ever put out... and that's some
pretty high marks. Paul Gilbert's blistering guitar work is a perfect
match for Mike Portnoy's driving kicks on "Crazy Horses" (Mike sings
it too...classic!), and "Set The Kingdom" is a great prog piece that
should have been on the main album, but I guess they ran out of room.
Neal is at his best on Elvis Costello's classic "What's So Funny
('bout Peace, Love and Understanding)" as well the Joe Cocker version
of "The Letter" and his poppy original "Sometimes." All this and the
extra personal notes from Neal regarding each song makes this Special
Edition truly special. A rare find these days...

Hot on the heels of his breakthrough concert DVD, SOLA SCRIPTURA &
BEYOND (which sold out before its release date), Morse unleashes
another progressive rock masterpiece with LIFELINE. But where do you
go from Beyond?
LIFELINE is a collection of songs exploring a variety of topics in
musical styles ranging from the classic sound of early Spock's Beard
to the fiery intensity of SOLA SCRIPTURA. For the first time in his
solo career, most of his album's songs span five minutes. (Then again,
this is a Neal Morse album. So yeah, you're also in for a 30 minute
prog tour de force.) Overall, LIFELINE is a breathtaking leap into
uncharted musical territory, and a triumphant return to the eclectic
sound of his early work with Spock's Beard and Transatlantic.
The album opens with the title track, "Lifeline," a song that might
have overslept the Spock's Beard V sessions. Neal honours the
desperation he experienced for most of his life, and celebrates his
eventual escape. Morse explores this previous life more intimately in
the beautifully tragic "The Way Home."
"Leviathan," the third track, expresses Neal's lighter side. Humour is
not usually associated with prog...then again, neither are metal
guitars answered by funk horns, and sneezing sea monsters. Perhaps
ironically, this is also probably the heaviest track of Neal's career.
Neal explores spirituality, love, and hope on the next two songs. The
most recognizable for Morse and Beard fans will be the second,
"Children Of The Chosen." Its anthemic, harmony-laden choruses evoke
SNOW's "Wind At My Back." Together, both songs are among Neal's most
engaging.
"So Many Roads" is LIFELINE's inevitable, majestic epic. Chronicling
Neal's life, musically and biographically, the song traverses the many
musical paths leading to the establishment of one of rock's
distinctive voices. Prepare for a surprisingly candid account of
Neal's early experiences, and his motivation to seek a new life.
Bringing LIFELINE full circle is the closing track, "Fly High." Neal
sings of returning to the beginning...before there were so many
questions, so many roads. We return to where we were as children—safe
in the eye of a raging storm. Looking skyward, we see a path leading
out. We reach upward, higher than we ever could, and grab hold...

-New "Metal Fest" TV Show Searches For Host
TRENTON, N.J. -- Monolith Entertainment Group is calling on all metal
fans with an insatiable love of metal and a tremendous personality to
take a shot at being the next great television host for its new "Metal
Fest" TV program, which is currently in development.
The weekly two-hour-long program, co-produced by company founder and
Indianapolis Metal Fest promoter Rob Mason, is slated to premier on
August 28(?) show on IMC TV (WDNI – Indianapolis). The show will
feature music videos from some of the biggest bands in the heavy metal
genre, as well as cutting-edge underground metal bands, and will
include artist interviews, news about upcoming local and regional
concerts and metal-related events, as well as coverage of key events
around the city of Indianapolis.
Auditions and screen tests will be held (when?) at the IMC TV studio
in Indianapolis. Those interested in auditioning for the position
should live and breathe metal and have knowledge of the genre to back
it up. Potential hosts must also possess a quick wit, spontaneous
nature, and an exuberant personality. An online application is

Mason's concept was born out of his love of the music and the success
of Indianapolis Metal Fest (IMF), now in its second year. "IMF was
created as a means of spotlighting the local metal scene, something
I'm very passionate about and committed to," Mason said. "And while
I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far, IMF is a yearly event.
'Metal Fest' TV, on the other hand, is a weekly event. It's an
opportunity to shed some light on what's going on within the genre and
what's going on around town no less than 52 times a year."
Naturally the idea has drawn the inevitable comparisons to other
network hard music shows, but while Mason concedes to being inspired
by them, he insists "Metal Fest" will offer something more. "'Metal
Fest' is definitely inspired by programs like 'Uranium' and
'Headbanger's Ball,' but it will have a local and regional flavor and
will actually cover the local scene."
Mason also promises that "Metal Fest" will be both fun and exciting,
with a crazy and spontaneous flair, in stark contrast to subdued and
scripted in-studio interviews. "This show is being produced by people
who truly love metal and that will show in the presentation," said
Mason.
Additionally, "Metal Fest" will air episodes with an emphasis on its
namesake and inspiration prior to and following the IMF, which will
take place on September 26 and 27 at the Madame Walker Theater. The
episodes will feature videos, interviews, and special segments co-
hosted by some of the festival's performers, which include Dew
Scented, Kittie, Green Jelly, F5 (featuring Dave Ellefson, formerly of
Megadeth), Threat Signal, The Absence, Daylight Dies, Into Eternity,
Divine Heresy, Bleed The Sky, The Destro, Level-C, Skeletonwitch, and

Already having the experience on the underground stoner/metal stage
and with mood for creation, Lucky Funeral immediately started the
composition process of their debut album after the great press
reaction to their original demo which was titled OBLATION and released
to a limited 100 copies. Due to the limited number of copies the demo
was sold out in just four days. The excellent response from Lucky
Funeral's first live shows came in autumn of 2007. The songs they
performed were just the verification that the band needed as they
prepared to record their first full-length album. Prior to that
however, Lucky Funeral came to an agreement with Trailblazer Records
for the release of their debut CD.
Following more live shows many hours in the studio, the debut CD LUCKY
FUNERAL was ready to be released in the records stores in April 2008.
In order to promote the CD the band got on the road all over Greece
and now the band have built up a serious army fans in their home

TORN was previously described by Evergrey mastermind Tom S. Englund as
a "modern mix of IN SEARCH OF TRUTH and RECREATION DAY." "The tracks
are all guitar-oriented and very atmospheric," he said. "They have

the slightly more experimental direction of Evergrey's previous

manage to do -- premium reissues are certainly a possibility."

The live arena has been vital to the longevity of Uriah Heep. So in

Uriah Heep's progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the
most popular hard rock groups of the early '70s. Formed by guitarist
Mick Box and vocalist David Byron in the late '60s, Uriah Heep
released their debut album, VERY 'HEAVY... VERY 'UMBLE in 1970. Since
then, the band have released 20 studio albums and played to millions
of fans across the globe. Uriah Heep remain one of British rocks most
consistent and long-standing acts.
WAKE THE SLEEPER is the band's first album without their long-standing
and original drummer, Lee Kerslake who sadly had to leave the band due
to ill health in January 2007. Filling the drum stool for the very
first time is the hugely well-respected Russell Gilbrook (Tony Iommi/
Black Sabbath, Van Morrison, John Farnham, and Lonnie Donnegan).

Poisonblack recorded A DEAD HEAVY DAY at Soundmix Studio in their
hometown Oulu with Kari Vähäkuopus, which put them in the right
mindset for what the band says was an easy, relaxing recording
session. Musically, the band strived for a dirtier and more rocking
sound than before. Aksu Hanttu (Entwine) mixed the album at Grooveland
Studio in Lahti, helping to provide the band with the sound they were
searching for. Guitarist Janne Markus sounds confident and happy about
the final result: "He totally got what we wanted: a heavier, yet
transparent sound."

-Within Temptation's new DVD BLACK SYMPHONY is due out September 22
(September23 in the U.S.). Hype: "The band's most ambitious staging to
date, BLACK SYMPHONY was a unique concert at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena on
February 7, 2008. Sold out months in advance, the show featured the
band performing to 10,000 fans with the 60-piece Metropole Orchestra
and a 20-voice classical choir, as well as on-stage stilt performers,
costume changes, and an array of stunning pyrotechnic and lighting
effects. The colossal production extended to Europe's largest video
screen (a massive 400 sqm), reaching across the entire width of the

-So did we all catch Judas Priest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" the other
night? They did two songs, "Prophecy" from NOSTRADAMUS and "Breaking
The Law." I really haven't kept up with Priest's touring activities
this year -- is Rob Halford wearing that glittery monk/wizard robe at
all NOSTRADAMUS tour stops, or was it special for Kimmel's show? Wow
was that goofy. Wow. He basically stood there, crouched over, with the
glittery hood obscuring his face as he sang. It reminded me of
U.D.O.'s tour for the HOLY album, when Udo Dirkschneider took the
stage wearing a tear-away priest's shirt to sing "Holy." These guys
should know better. :) Anyway... It was cool to see Priest doing a new
song, and it was cool to see Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing singing
backing vocals.
-Also on the TV front, try to catch the episode of A&E's "Private
Sessions" featuring Foreigner. Don't forget the current lineup
features singer Kelly Hansen (Hurricane), bassist Jeff Pilson
(Dokken), and drummer Jason Bonham (UFO, Bonham). The band plays a
bunch of greatest hits and one new song (which was kind of boring,
truth be told...), and there are interview segments with main man Mick
Jones and Hansen.
-I'm a slacker. I still haven't checked out a single note of any of
the new Metallica stuff that's floating around online. I'm hearing
good things though.

ETERNAL DESCENT - THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (B) Incendium, 2008

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a three-song teaser for the new Eternal
Descent album and once again showcases the talents of brainchild Llexi
Leon and amazing vocalist Elysha West. The basic idea of Eternal
Descent is a good one, the music complemented by a comic featuring
interesting characters and an involving story, and based on what is
here I'm looking forward to hearing the completed project. The title
track is well done, with an atmospheric production utilizing ambient
styled keyboards, heavy guitars and the contrasting vocals of Elysha
taking on the role of Christine and Llexi representing the Phantom. As
a fan of instrumental music I was really impressed with the track
"Legends," which is quite dramatic and a strong complement to "The
Phantom Of The Opera," while "Fallen" suggests a more dreamlike
interlude. Like a good movie trailer, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a
short but tasty morsel that whets the appetite for what is to come...

RICHIE KOTZEN - LIVE IN SAO PAULO (A-/B+) Headroom-Inc., 2008

It's hard to believe that after almost 20 years as a solo artist, this
is Richie Kotzen's first official live album. Featuring selections
drawn from his diverse solo albums along with several cool covers,
LIVE IN SAO PAULO effectively documents a special night with this
talented musician. Richie was influenced by some of the giants such as
Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack and Paul Rogers and you
can hear this on standout tracks such as "Fooled Again," "So Cold," "A
Love Divine," and "Mother Head's Family Reunion." Richie is at his
best on the high-energy rockers, but he is also impressive on some of
the slower, sensitive tunes like "Faith," his soulful vocals infusing
the music with a late '60s/early '70s authenticity. There is plenty of
shredding to enjoy here, but Richie is a bit looser live than he is on
his studio albums, this translating into more of a genuine live
experience than what you'll get from albums that have been doctored
and re-recorded. LIVE IN SAO PAULO is certainly one Kotzen enthusiasts
will want to add to their collection, but fans of classic hard rock
steeped in R&B and soul will also find a lot to love here...

WINTER'S VERGE - ETERNAL DAMNATION (B/B-) LMP/SPV, 2008

With a name like ETERNAL DAMNATION you would be forgiven for thinking
this is black metal, but actually Winter's Verge play pretty standard
power metal in the vein of HammerFall, Angra, Sonata Artica and Blind
Guardian. It's all competently executed, if not spectacular, the band
showing a lot of promise on "Get Me Out," "A Secret Once Forgotten,"
"For I Have Sinned," and "To You I Sail Tonight." Vocalist George
Charalambous sounds confident and assured in places, but oddly
strained at times, and it would be nice to hear guitarist Harry Pari
stretch out and play some longer solos, as he is kind of reined in
here, Stefanos Psillides' keyboards displaying more flash. So nothing
terribly unique here, the album pretty much aimed at the power metal
faithful, but worth a listen if this style excites you.
