by the label Soundholic, the power metal band Magician now has the CD

The album was mixed and mastered in Germany by a "dream team" of heavy
metal formed by Dirk Schlächter (Gamma Ray), Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray,

May Child Ink Deal With Z

Z are pleased to announce the signing of Canadian act May Child. The
band where brought to our attention by non other than Von Groove front
man and all round nice guy Mike Shotton, who also plays drums, etc. on
the release. May Child was founded by Montreal guitarist and composer
Yvan Roberge. His passion started at the age of 12 and soon after he
started playing with bands on the local scene. After playing with
numerous bands he started working on his songwriting. All this led him
to start his own project called May Child. This gave Yvan the
opportunity to gain experience in writing, recording, and producing.

In 2006 May Child caught the attention of producer Corey Macfadyen
(Serial Joe, Sue Foley, Brighton Rock), teaming up with Corey brought
the production of the debut album. The players include: Marc Spenard
(vocals), Michael Shotton (drums), Corey Macfadyen (bass) and Yvan
Roberge (guitars). All songs on the album were written to be
accessible to a large demographic of listeners, without compromising
the integrity of the material which is "all about the songs." The
band's debut will be released late October 2008.

Maplerun is a modern rock band based in Athens, Greece. The group got

-You are probably as sick as I am of every column of mine beginning
with something about how f'n long it takes me in between columns.
Those of you that remember I actually write one, anyway. So consider
this the last time I ever bring it up. Suffice to say I live the life
of metal every day, even when I don't say anything about it. Oh, and I
will also abandon the whole church aspect of this column; no more
calling you parishioners and asking you to drop to your knees, etc.
The Altar we all worship at is Metal, and in Metal no one man tells
you what to do.

-Anyone listen to XM radio? I dig Eddie Trunk's show on Monday nights
(Channel 41 The Boneyard). I don't listen to XM all the time, but it
is a good way to change up my car listening habits. Like traditional
radio they seem to play too much from the same bands and never enough
from others, but it's still the best metal radio option we seem to
have here in Chicago. I would love to know what's out there I'm
missing, so please educate me. I can't recall XM ever playing bands
like Crimson Glory, or Drain STH, or Serenity, or even Evergrey.

-Speaking of Evergrey, I lovelovelove TORN. Not that this will come as
a surprise for anyone but barring a last minute miracle release, this
is my #1 for 2008. This is by no means a full review (I'll let Sean do
that as I've stolen it from him in the past) but Tom S. Englund and
Co. do not disappoint. I don't have full liner notes (I do so love me
some promo discs) so I don't want to credit anything to the wrong
person, but no matter who comes and goes, Evergrey remains consistent
in sound and production quality. Do yourself a favor on September 23rd
and grab this!

-My good friend James and I trekked out to Waukegan, IL to see Alice
Cooper last week. I really didn't want to go but I looked at it more
as a time to hang out with James as life usually gets in the way of
our best laid plans. Imagine my surprise when Alice Cooper kicked my
teeth thru the back of my skull and then pis*** metal fire all through
my bloody jaw. Wow. This show was AMAZING! How old is this guy? You'd
never know it. He played so many great, great songs; songs I'd
forgotten; songs I didn't even realize I knew. And he had theatrics.
Oh, yes, he had theatrics. Monks, goth girls, corpses, everything
you'd expect. He started off the show by running someone thru with his
cane and the body count grew from there. Even he died once. I
absolutely loved this show and now am torn as to ever seeing him
again. I don't want anything to tarnish this amazing memory.

-My wife bought me a cool copy of Revolver magazine the other day.
It's a special "Rebel Meets Rebel" issue that compiles various old
articles where one rocker interviews another. Samples: Gene Simmons
interviewed by Scott Ian, Tenacious D by Corey Taylor (Slipknot),
James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich by M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold), Tom
Arraya and Kerry King by Marilyn Manson, Lemmy by Matt Pike (High On
Fire), Dave Mustaine by Mark Morton (Lamb Of God), and King Diamond by
Ihsahn (Emperor). Definitely some interesting and funny stuff here.

-The Tap (still) lives! It's funny how the "goes to 11" line, and
Spinal Tap references in general, are so enduring. I just read a
review of Metallica's DEATH MAGNETIC (out today -- snap it up for only
$8.99 at Circuit City!) that contained not one but two Tap mentions,
and a week or so ago Nigel Tufnel & Co. were referenced in a Fall Out
Boy concert review. I clip and save these things (yes I am a nerd) and
have quite a few now.

Sweden is not typically the first place one associates with
psychedelic rock but that's exactly where this rather unusual quartet
hail from, serving up a mixed but interesting assortment of tones on
EUPHORIA. Dead Man convincingly conjure a late '60s vibe, blending the
hippy rock of the Grateful Dead with a bit of the doom of Black
Sabbath in places. The band are at their best on catchy, emotive cuts
such as "High Or Low," "Footsteps," and "Rest In Peace," while others
like "A Pinch Of Salt" and the title track sound rather indistinctive.
Biggest sticking point might be the vocals, which are likely going to
be quite an acquired taste for most. In all candor, this type of music
isn't my thing so take that in account in deciding whether this might
be for you, as there is sort of a nostalgic charm to all this...
