Yngwie Malmsteen To Be Inducted Into Hollywood's RockWalk
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- Electric guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen,
will be inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on Monday, October 13 at
noon. Yngwie's masterful technique, innovation, and flamboyant
showmanship has mesmerized listeners since the early 1980s and
inspired generations of aspiring guitarists around the world.
Born on June 30, 1963 in Stockholm, Sweden, Yngwie Malmsteen received
his first guitar at the age of five from his mother, Rigmor.
Originally having no interest in music, a September 18, 1970 TV
special on the death of guitarist Jimi Hendrix became the day that the
guitar-playing Yngwie was born. Yngwie immersed himself in music and
spent long hours practicing the songs of Deep Purple. His admiration
for Ritchie Blackmore's classically influenced playing led him to
absorb the classical structures of such masters as Bach, Vilvaldi,
Beethoven and Mozart.
At the age of 15 Yngwie left school for good and formed the very first
incarnation of Rising Force before moving to the United States in 1982
with only his '71 Strat® and an extra pair of pants. He performed for
the first time in the U.S. the very next year and then, after playing
on an album by Steeler, he formed Alcatrazz. After it became clear
that he would need to go solo to fully develop his talents, Yngwie
released his first solo album, RISING FORCE, in 1981. The album made
it to #60 on the Billboard charts and gained Yngwie a GRAMMY
nomination for best rock instrumental performance.
With his place in guitar history firmly established, Yngwie has
continued to inspire guitarists worldwide for over a decade. He has
released many classic albums including MARCHING OUT (1985), TRILOGY
(1986), ODYSSEY (1988), FIRE AND ICE (1992), THE SEVENTH SIGN (1994),
INSPIRATION (1996), FACING THE ANIMAL (1997), ALCHEMY (1999), ATTACK!!
(2002) and UNLEASH THE FURY (2005). He has also shown his versatility
by producing his first completely classical work, CONCERTO SUITE FOR
ELECTRIC GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA IN EB MINOR, OP.1, in 1997.
October 14, 2008 will see the release of his latest studio album,
PERPETUAL FLAME which he produced and engineered himself. The Fender®
Custom Shop has also introduced the new Yngwie Malmsteen Tribute
Series Stratocaster® guitar, a reproduction of Malmsteen's beloved
instrument that will be produced in limited edition.
Hollywood's RockWalk is the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to
honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting
contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock 'n' Roll, Blues and
R&B. Yngwie Malmsteen's handprints will reside alongside the
handprints, signatures, and faces of other equally accomplished
musicians and innovators such as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny
Cash, Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins,
Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker
and Earth Wind & Fire among numerous others.
Guitar Legend Yngwie Malmsteen Unleashes First New Album In Three
Years, PERPETUAL FLAME
The global rock guitar community will undoubtedly mark October 14,
2008 on their calendars, as this is the exact date that Yngwie
Malmsteen will be issuing his latest studio triumph, PERPETUAL FLAME.
The album will the first-ever Yngwie album to be released via Rising
Force Records (distributed via Koch), while the album also marks the
debut on an Yngwie album by ex-Judas Priest/Iced Earth front man, Tim
"Ripper" Owens.
Twelve tracks of pure six string metallic bliss (which stretches to
almost 70 minutes total), the album was produced and engineered by
Yngwie himself, and mixed by Roy Z (who has previously worked with
Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson, among others). Joining Yngwie and
Ripper on the album is keyboardist Derek Sherinian and drummer Patrick
Johansson (Yngwie contributed bass, additional keyboards, and vocals,
as well), but on tour, Michael Troy will supply keyboards, and Bjorn
Englen will be laying down the bass. A supporting tour of the U.S. and
Canada is slated to run through all of October.
Single-handedly, Yngwie Malmsteen trailblazed the classical metal
movement in the 1980's. During a time when the majority of guitarists
were merely copying Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie was one of the few rock
guitarists to create his own instantly-identifiable playing style --
which has been subsequently mimicked by countless other guitarists.
Yngwie is responsible for issuing some of the metal's all-time great
guitar classics, especially such releases as 1984's RISING FORCE,
1985's MARCHING OUT, 1992's FIRE AND ICE, and most recently, 2005's
UNLEASH THE FURY.
In addition to the arrival of PERPETUAL FLAME in October, another
career highlight is slated for the following month -- Yngwie has
teamed up with the Fender® Custom Shop to reconstruct his beloved
Yngwie Malmsteen "Play Loud" Stratocaster® guitar, which be unveiled
globally on November 28th (limited edition of 106 tribute series
guitars) and there will be a slew of CD reissues of Yngwie classics to
soon be announced. And the accolades continue to pour in -- Roadie
Crew Magazine organized a poll in which 330 respected rock guitarists
were asked to vote for their favorite guitarist of all-time. Yngwie
checked in at a lofty number 3, only behind fellow legends Jimi
Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. Without question, 2008 is shaping up to
be the year of Yngwie.

The limited edition comes in a high-class digipack with one bonus
track ("Caught In A Lie").
TORN was previously described by Evergrey mastermind Tom S. Englund as
a "modern mix of IN SEARCH OF TRUTH and RECREATION DAY. The tracks are
all guitar-oriented and very atmospheric," he said. "They have exactly
the sound that our fans expect from us." According to Englund, the
slightly more experimental direction of Evergrey's previous release,
MONDAY MORNING APOCOLYPSE has given way again to old strengths and
virtues. "Two years ago we needed an album with a slightly different
approach and an expensive producer, just to find out how that sort of
thing works," he explained. "It was the right album at the time, but
now we have returned to our typical trademarks." This is one of the
reasons why the tracks on TORN were self-produced by Englund together
with drummer Jonas Ekdahl. In addition, the band has a new bassist,
Fredrik Larsson having been replaced by former Stratovarius musician
Jari Kainulainen.
Since the band arrived on the scene in 1998, Evergrey has brought out
six studio albums and one live release. All of them made the Top 20 in
the group's native Sweden and the last two cracked the Top 10 (No. 6
and 3, respectively). On top of that, Evergrey's DVD was No. 1 for
four weeks and was nominated for the Swedish Grammy equivalent.

The principals of Blistering are individuals with self-proclaimed

Chairman of the Board Tomas Sunmo started his career in 1984 at
Tandan/Alpha Records as label manager for artists like Metallica,
Sepultura, Frank Zappa, etc. Tomas then went on to Reel Records and
then MNW ILR before co-founding Scandinavian Record Distribution
company, Playground Music where he also acted as the Director of
Business Affairs between 1999 and 2007.
Label President Lars Chriss is widely known as a recording and touring
artist with his band Lion's Share (Century Media, JVC, AFM Records,
Avex, etc.). Lars has a sound engineering degree at SAE and has
extensive industry experience from working at various labels, booking
agencies and artist management companies.
North American Managing Director Jim Pitulski has done marketing and
artist development for companies like Columbia Records and the
Polygram Label Group where he worked hands-on with acts such as Alice
In Chains, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Warrant,
Britny Fox and Kingdom Come. Jim also started management company
Roundtable Entertainment where he handled Dream Theater, Spock's Beard
and Fish. He then went on to become the managing director of Inside
Out Music America, perhaps the world's top label for progressive rock
and metal.
Blistering Records is also looking to generate and foster strategic
relationships with like-minded labels for licensing and distribution
in North America and Europe. Recent alliances with Italy's Frontiers
Records and Germany's Massacre Records are examples.
Blistering will release its first titles in the U.S. through Ryko/
Warner Distribution on October 7th. Among those titles will be new
releases from Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Michael Kiske (Helloween),
House Of Lords and Revolution Renaissance which features former
Stratovarius guitarist Timo Tolkki.

Britton Sign To Z For Underground Classic Reissue
Z are proud to announce the signing of an agreement that finally
allows the underground classic hard rock debut from Britton, ROCK
HARD, to finally be released on CD format. The re-mastered version
features all 10 original track plus 10 bonus tracks!!!!
Originally release during 1988 via a CBS sublabel, this album should
have taken the band onto bigger things however music industry politics
put a stop to that.
Britton where formed in 1985 by lead vocalist Michael Britton and lead
guitarist Jim McMellen. They recruited Gary Holland (ex-Great White)
on drums and bassist Greg Chaissson (who was later to join Jake E.
Lee's Badlands). Last to join the band was Patrick Schunk, who
supported keyboards and rhythm guitar.
The band recorded demos at The Record Plant which were featured on TEN
BEST OF THE WEST, a Rhino Records compilation of the 10 best yet
unsigned bands in '87. At this time, Greg Chaisson had left and was
replaced by Skip Frank. The Record Plant demo and the Rhino
compilation album resulted in a deal with TSR Records, a sub to the
CBS label. The band released their highly acclaimed LP ROCK HARD in
1988, singles lifted from the album achieved extensive radio coverage
all over the states, and the album received fine reviews from most
respected rock magazines at the time.
2008, for the first time ever, we will have the chance to listen to 20
amazing Britton tracks on CD format supported with the original
artwork, pictures, lyrics, comments by front men Mike and Jim of the
band and a sound that is better than ever. Britton where definitely a
band that deserved much more success than they gained back in the day
when relatively many melodic rock bands sold gold and platinum in the
U.S., but with this release their classic ROCK HARD album will finally
get its worthy reissue.
Z Rock 09 Festival Update
We are currently in advanced negotiations with five named acts, most
of whom have not played or not appeared in the U.K. for a long time.
We hope to be able to start announcing the lineup in a week or so's
time, you won't be disappointed. ;o)
Z Rock 09 sees a return to JB's in Dudley on May 29th and 30th 2009
due to the extra capacity we will need for next year's event. Tickets

Venturia released one of the hottest debuts of recent years with
2006's THE NEW KINGDOM. Now the band has returned with another
masterwork in HYBRID, with the first pressing containing a bonus DVD.
Building upon the unique sound heard on their debut, HYBRID is a
fitting title for the numerous sounds that make up the Venturia sound
in 2008. HYBRID sees Venturia's music sounding even more modern,
veering away from classical prog metal edge heard on the debut and
delving into new territories. The majority of the change can be heard
on the new songs arrangements with the addition of some ambient
guitars and keyboards being treated in a trip-hop and electronic music
style.
The balance between the male vocals of Marc Ferreira and female vocals
of Lydie Robin are now equal and HYBRID saw Lydie involved in the
writing of the lyrics for the first time. The band's two distinct
vocal approaches help create the distinguished Venturia sound with
Marc's more aggressive style contrasting perfectly with Lydie's touch
of sensuality, passion, heart and soul. Lyrically most of the words
were written by Charly Sahona with the main subjects covering the
duality between heart and reason, the buddhist wisdom, art and
transcendental idealism, addictive seduction. Lydie Robin also wrote
some lyrics with Charly Sahona focus on the barbarian ritual of
Excision in Africa in the song "Why? This Women's Life." This song is
one of the highlights of the album. Lydie's singing and the music of
"Why?" have never been so intense. Lydie also wrote about the
hypocrisy and the abuse of power politicians use in the song "Swearing
Lies."
The amazing musicianship of Charly Sahona, Thomas James and Diego
Rapacchietti is once again something to behold with the final sound
being a blend between metal, prog, pop, classical, electronic music
and the technical parts are even crazier. Despite these changes fans
of the band's debut will grasp the new album with open arms with the
sound never being mistaken for anyone other than Venturia.
HYBRID was recorded at Artsonik studio, Delémont, Switzerland and
produced by Charly Sahona and Diego Rapacchietti. The sound is modern,
crisp and powerful yet sounding more organic than the debut -- in
short a killer production.

The reissued back catalogue will be released at the end of October.
This is a double CD comprising the first two albums (CELTIC LEGACY and
RESURRECTION) with some bonus tracks and all new artwork. Because it's
a reissue, it won't be available on iTunes as the tracks already exist
up on that site and plenty of others. The double CD will sell for the
same price as a single album and will be available to order directly
from the band's Web site from the end of next month.
Legacy are also about to sign up with a promotional company which we
hope will bring us to the attention of the festival organisers for
2009. There are also tentative plans for a trip to the U.S. in 2009,
probably the west coast. Plans are still at a very early stage though.

Sonic Orchid is a Canadian rock band based in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Featuring strong, solid, female vocals and powerful guitar-driven
melodic rock, Christine fuels the group with her siren-like vocals,
reaching into gritty and powerful inflections to sweet and sultry
colors, while lead guitarist, Brad, is compared to the likes of
melodic virtuosos Joe Satriani and Neal Schon. After the group formed
in 2002 as a hard rock cover band, it was apparent that the band had
its own style and began writing music. Each member brought various
musicality, experience, and influences to Sonic Orchid. Coupling
classic rock hooks with melodic metal expressions, the group's music
is catchy, sing-able, and appeals to a diverse audience.
The group's first recording, released in 2005, simply entitled, SONIC
ORCHID EP, has seen high sales. Their new full-length CD entitled,
LOVE & WAR, was released in April, 2008. LOVE & WAR has been receiving
positive reviews and has is gaining popularity internationally. Sonic
Orchid has fans from all over Canada, and some from the United States
and the United Kingdom. Their music is being played on several online,
community and campus radio stations.
The collaboration of band members gives them more than 20 years of
experience in the music business. Sonic Orchid's goal is to establish
themselves as an independent recording and touring act. Sonic Orchid
has performed in various venues in Saskatchewan including: Regina,
Rock n' the Valley Festival at Craven, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Melville,
Saskatoon, Prince Albert and La Ronge. They have also performed in
Manitoba in Minnedosa at The Grand Beach Festival, Brandon and
Winnipeg. Medicine Hat was the group's first Alberta experience. In
the summer of 2006 they toured into Alberta playing in several major
cities and towns. The group's popularity in these venues has brought
them back to play several times per year, securing contracts in most
of these venues for repeat performances.
In 2006, Sonic Orchid received a great CD review from Bob Donovan from
the Northeast Indie In-Tune Magazine (which has worldwide coverage).
"Canada's Sonic Orchid is one of the bands that is looking retro at
good, old fashioned rock-n-roll yet stepping it up slightly to bring
it up to date while utilizing some of the things that made the

Revenge has always set itself apart from other bands due to their
concert style shows, audience participation, and mixture of covers and
original songs in their sets. Shortly after forming, Revenge began
playing all the local clubs on a regular basis and soon began to be
booked two to three nights in a row at some of the bigger clubs.
From their first full-length release on vinyl and cassette in the '80s
titled FIRST BLOOD, to their newest full-length CD, titled TITTIES -N-
BEER, Revenge have continued to keep pounding double kick drumming and
guitar solos alive and well. Their sound has been described as hard
rock or power rock with a fresh modern sound.
Receiving radio airplay on several of the songs from the first
release, they became local favorites and were often invited to do live
performances for Rock Radio station promotions such as license plate
bolt ons in Florida, to appearing on local news broadcasts and "Good
Morning America."
This led to a two-year, 12-state U.S. circuit tour. Sadly, however,
life on the road isn't for everyone and it took its toll on their
drummer. They realized they needed someone that still had the passion
and love for the rock-n-roll life.
Relocating from Florida to Ohio, founding members K. Chante and Lance
Solak auditioned over 100 drummers and finally hooked up with
Pittsburgh's Untamed drummer, Matt Contorno. Matt, originally from
Cleveland, brought the freshness and passion of the original band back
to the surface and beyond. Their playing style is high energy, solid
and flashy, which is apparent in live performances. Revenge has been
playing all over Northern Ohio and released TITTIES -N- BEER to
satisfy their fan base. Aside from the U.S.A., copies have already

-Sensory To Unveil Rock Opera Masterpiece... Xystus
Xystus is a Dutch progressive metal band formed in 1999 by drummer Ivo
Van Dijk and guitarist/vocalist Bas Dolmans. They enlisted bassist
Mark Brekelmans and second guitarist Bob Witsma. Through the course of
releasing two albums -- 2004's RECEIVING TOMORROW and 2006's SURREAL
-- the band built up a buzz and fanbase in The Netherlands. The band
supported Kamelot and made numerous festival appearances. In December
2005, Xystus went on a European tour in support of Epica. The band had
even greater ambitions and in 2006 they contacted the Utrechtsch
Studenten Concert -- the oldest symphony orchestra in The Netherlands.
The resulting two-year collaboration resulted in the rock opera
"Equilibrio." Conceived as both an actual stage production and studio
recording, "Equilibrio" was performed to four sold out audiences in
July, 2008 -- over 4,000 people witnessed the opera.
Sensory is proud to release the studio recording of "Equilibrio,"
which features key scenes from the opera. In addition to the 60 piece
U.S. Concert orchestra and 30 member choir, Xystus enlisted vocal
performances from Simone Simons (Epica), George Osthoek (Orphanage,
Delain) and Dutch theater veterans Michelle Splietelhof and John
Vooijs.
The story of "Equilibrio" revolves around a wanderer named Diegu (Bas
Dolmans) who finds himself caught between the forces of good and evil,
the power mad ruler Primos (John Vooijs), and the altruistic rebel
Avelin (Michelle Splietelhof). Primos makes a pact with Death (George
Osthoek) to take over the world. After unsuccessful efforts by Diegu
to mediate between Avelin and Primos, the latter ends up with complete
power and the world is thrown out of balance. Diegu is summoned by the
godess Lady Sophia (Simone Simons). She watches over Earth and
entrusts Diegu with the job reuniting Primos and Avelin in order to
restore the balance between good and evil again.

Evolve IV was founded by two seasoned progressive musicians from
either side of the Atlantic, Peter Matuchniak from the U.K. and
Michael Eager from the U.S.A. They formed a strong song-writing
partnership that provides a fresh take on the modern progressive
scene, whilst leaning on their combined experiences with past bands on
either side of the pond.
Lead guitarist Peter was part of the U.K. neo-progressive rock scene
from the 1980's with bands Mach One and Janysium, that attracted
attention from press agent Keith Goodwin (Marillion, Yes, etc.), with
reviews featuring in top British music papers for their tour of London
clubs and English Universities. Singer and rhythm guitarist Michael
toured extensively across the United States throughout the 1990s with
Vitamin Funk, Mind Expansion and HED, bands that he had formed while
living in Boston and Seattle respectively.
The pair was joined by drummer Paul Sheriff and bassist Jim DeBaun,
all of whom met while answering Internet ads, with a common goal to
record music that evolved naturally out of their influences, past
(Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Grateful Dead, Beatles) and present
(Coldplay, Killers, Radiohead). The results are their debut release
DECADENT LIGHT.

Nick D'Virgilio Releases Genesis LAMB Tribute On ProgRock Records
Nashville-based recording engineer/producer and a Los Angeles-based
performer have teamed up to create a unique twist on a classic Genesis
album. This fall, Nick D'Virgilio of Spock's Beard fame and engineer/
producer Mark Hornsby are re-recording the Genesis classic: THE LAMB
LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, in its entirety. Produced at Java Jive Studio
in Nashville, the album features some of Music City's best musicians,
taking the songs in a whole new direction.
"We wanted to see what would happen if we exposed the songs to a
different climate of musicians," says D'Virgilio, "The early Genesis
recordings are so musical and very bluesy when you get right down to
it. They really lend themselves to some different interpretations.
When it came time to figure out what label to work with, I remembered
working with Shawn on the Amaran's Plight release and had been really
pleased with how that all worked out and I knew what a big Genesis fan
he is, so I'm glad it worked out."
Although all of the original elements of the songs are still included
such as drums, bass, guitar and piano, the recordings now take on a
more "theatrical" vibe. This, coupled with orchestra, rock guitars,
and some fantastic horn arrangements, the songs now enter an entirely
different place.
"We had talked about doing something like this for awhile," says
Hornsby, "With the recent attention our version of 'The Colony Of
Slippermen' received, and the re-release of the original album in 5.1,
the time seemed right to see what we could come up with. After the
first conference call with Shawn, I felt really comfortable about
working with him, and we all managed to make it work and realize the
fruition of our vision."

reading the lyrics and liner notes for THE LAMB. Nick is one of my
favorite drummers, and to combine these two elements in what is an

SHADOWMAN is the second solo album from Steve Walsh and was originally
released in 2005 but without the benefit of a good distribution
channel. A couple years later, Steve recorded two new songs with
basically the same people but they were only available digitally. Now
Steve has teamed up with ProgRock Records to re-release SHADOWMAN and
include these two new songs as well for a new package that will be
widely available.
Steve had this to say: "I'm concluding my writing career with
SHADOWMAN and the two tracks I recorded a year or two later, which are
also included. It's ironic that I finally found a group of individuals
that best represent my songs, at the twilight. Better late than never,
I guess. I only wish I had more to record with them. It was fun. I
learned that the destination is only as worthwhile as the trip you are
willing to take. And that the trip is always a toss up. But this trip
was way cool. My only regret is that we weren't able to record in the
same room at the same time. It's hard to put into words what writing
these songs meant to me. I don't think I was born to do it. But over
time I was able to feel things that I blocked out for many years, hell
maybe I never felt them before at all. And from time to time I listen
to them, as well as GLOSSOLALIA with a bit of melancholy, remembering
the whole process, and all the memories of excitement whenever I'd get
tracks from the guys to add to my sequences. There's not much I can
add to what I've already said, except to thank those responsible once

With more epic arrangements this time around, but always with a focus
on melody, this album was made using only classic analog synths,

the return of Peter Wichers as a guitarist in Soilwork. He's been
missed both as a bandmate and as a songwriter.
We know that we can come back even stronger, and it definitely gives
us a feeling of inspiration and completion to have Peter, one of the
founders of Soilwork, come back to the fold. We feel that we can look
into the future with greater confidence and musical creativity. Having
Peter back will complete the circle and the final line up of the band.
This also marks Daniel Antonsson's departure from Soilwork as Peter's
replacement since 2006. We are really grateful for Daniel's excellent
work and he will be missed. However, to us it's ideal for Peter to
fulfill his former duties as a songwriter and guitarist. Going
separate ways with Daniel is not an easy decision for us to make, but
it's the right one. We wish Daniel the best of luck in the future and
many great things with his other band Dimension Zero! Rock on
Daniel!!!
As we previously announced, Dirk's bandmate in Scarve, Sylvain
Coudret, has been doing session work for us throughout the Summer
festivals and shredding on second guitar. Therefore we're taking this
opportunity to confirm Sylvain as a permanent guitar player for
Soilwork. Since we're big fans of Scarve, we know Sylvain will make a
great addition to the songwriting process for the next Soilwork album.
Peter's return to Soilwork will begin on stage with the upcoming
European tour.

-Defiance Signs To Candlelight
Candlelight Records today announces the signing of Oakland, California
based Defiance. The band currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel
(Skinlab), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark
Hernandez (Vio-lence, Forbidden) has started early tracking of their
new album at Trident Studios and Greendot Studios in East Bay,
California. The currently untitled album is expected for Spring 2009
release.
Formed in 1985, Defiance have recorded three albums all for Roadrunner
Records -- PRODUCT OF SOCIETY (1989, produced by Jeff Waters/
Annihilator), VOID TERRA FIRMA (1990, produced by John Cuniberti), and
BEYOND RECOGNITION (1992, produced by Rob Beaton). In 1994 the members
put Defiance on hiatus allowing them opportunity to work on outside
projects. In 2005 after requests from fans and new vigor on the part
of band members, Defiance reunited. In an interview with popular
portal Metal-Temple.com Mike Kaufmann reveals, "We have received lots
of messages from fans who have said they would love to hear some new
Defiance. We always felt the band broke up too early so we plan to use
this opportunity to pick up where we left off."
Defiance along with their fellow mosh pit peers of the '80s
(Testament, Exodus, Death Angel) contributed to the rise and immense
popularity of thrash metal for over a decade. In recent years with the
reformations of many of the classic bands, fans have been given
opportunity to re-embrace the aggressive sound of the American-flavor
of the genre.
Defiance plan to finish recording of their Candlelight debut by year's
end. The band expects to announce touring plans in the early part of
2009.

Band Biography
1995/1996
Fredrik Mannberg and Nils Eriksson are hard at work with their main
band Nocturnal Rites, but felt that they need a melodic contrary and
an outlet for something that reminds them of the early thrash bands
they grew up with. Holocaust is thus born as a two-piece project that
however shortly grows into something more serious and ambitious. The
band name is changed to Guillotine and quickly a demo recording
established (UNDER THE GUILLOTINE, 1995). The demo receives rave
reviews in the Thrash community and the band soon inks their first
record deal, recruit drummer extraordinaire Cobra and starts working
on material for what will come to be their debut album.
1997
To large praise of the underground thrash scene and magazines alike,
Guillotine's debut album UNDER THE GUILLOTINE is released in the first
quarter of 1997. Although this happened when the retro Thrash revival
is at its peak and the scene is flooded with bands and projects,
Guillotine manages to secure a top position and UNDER THE GUILLOTINE
is still to this day considered a classic second wave Thrash Metal
release of the 1990s.
1998
The main focus of Fredrik Mannberg and Nils Eriksson is devoted to
Nocturnal Rites and any Guillotine's eventual plans for touring and
further releases are indefinitely put on ice.
2007
After a ten-tear break, the monster lives and the urge to produce
killer Thrash Metal songs is back again! This time to stay, as it
seems. The band recruits two new members, Daniel Sundbom (Guitars),
Efraim Juntunen (Drums) and lays down two brand new tracks ("War,"
"Blood Money") for a demo and the intention of landing a record deal
for their second -- or comeback if you will -- album. In early 2008,
the band ultimately signs with Pulverised Records and begin work on
what will become BLOOD MONEY (2008).
2008
Present day. Guillotine has finished recording for BLOOD MONEY and are
awaiting it to be unleashed upon an anxious Thrash community. The band
is here to stay. No project or second try -- the real thing; only
pure, simple and to-the-point Thrash Metal. In the rawest and most
pissed off form there is.

-Indonesian Rockers Slank Break Out With English Debut And Tour
TRENTON, N.J. -- After more than 15 million records sold in its
Indonesian homeland, Slank is breaking out with its first worldwide
English language album, ANTHEM FOR THE BROKEN HEARTED.
Slank's decidedly Western sound has a broad appeal to lovers of pop
music with a rock edge. Its lyrics, however, draw from its Indonesian
foundation, focusing on the trials and tribulations of living in a
struggling, third-world country. The album's title, in fact, is not an
ode to the lovesick, but a reference to the Indonesian people.
"We come from a country where there are still injustices and
corruption occurring," said drummer Bimbim. "That's why there are many
broken hearted. But in this state we still have the faith and spirit
to put the anthem on, the anthem for the broken hearted."
After achieving momentous success at home, Slank now has its eyes set
on the rest of the world.
"We want to explore our new musical experiences, and we need to bring
our 'peace virus' to the world," said Bimbim. "We believe with music
we can change the world, and in English we can get wider attention."
Despite its "music with a message," Slank's main focus is creating
good old-fashioned catchy songs like "Devilinu" and "Drug Me Up."
Recorded in California while the band was holed up in Studio City,
ANTHEM FOR THE BROKEN HEARTED was produced with esteemed guitarist-
turned-producer Blues Saraceno.
Slank is prepared to support the release of ANTHEM FOR THE BROKEN
HEARTED with a U.S. tour this fall, though the dates will not be
Slank's first in America. The band has already had the chance to play
for audiences in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Virginia, and New York.
"Most of the audiences were great and very enthusiastic," Bimbim said.
"We met new people and friends, made new fans, and met old fans who
lived in the U.S. for long time and never had a chance to see Slank
live."
Undoubtedly, Slank will be recruiting plenty of new fans to be
"Slankers" as they experience its energetic live shows and listen to
its infectious album.

MVD Entertainment Group (MVD) has announced plans to issue several
releases on vinyl including new and previously unreleased tracks by
Devo and the Dwarves, plus reissues by G.G. Allin, Wendy O. Williams
and the Plasmatics, and more. MVD and Big Daddy have deep access to a
great amount of quality content from some very collectible artists.
"We are very fortunate to be able to revisit this great catalog and
bring these gems back to life in their originally intended format,"
said Ed Seaman, COO of MVD.
This comes in response to a resurgence of fans, collectors, and true
audiophiles who prefer the warm sound of vinyl. According to a July
2008 article in Billboard, "Indie retail started the party, but now
some of the chains are carrying vinyl too. In addition to Fred Meyer
and Borders, Best Buy has said publicly that it will experiment with
carrying LPs." Since retailers are becoming increasingly supportive,
it was a no-brainer for MVD.
"I love vinyl...always have and always will," said Seaman. "The look,
the feel, and of course the sound. And most importantly -- with vinyl
you get an easily digestible chunk of music to listen to -- about 15
minutes per side. And then, it is time to make a decision: do I flip
the album over and play the other side? Or do I pick a new record?"

Devo - WATCH US WORK IT
This will contain four versions of the song "Watch Us Work It": Teddy
Bears Version, Original Devo Demo Version, Karaoke Version, and "Still
Workin'" Version. It was recorded at Mutato Muzika in Los Angeles and
produced by Sweden's famous Teddy Bears. The Dell company heard it
when Paul Malmstrom and Linus Karlsson at the Mother agency in N.Y.C.
pitched it as a possibility for a TV campaign for the newly developed,
high-end laptop computer. Dell loved it, so they used it for
nationwide TV ad campaign. The vinyl will also include "Devo Was Right
About Everything" by Attery Squash (re-mix by Robert and Gerald
Casale).

GG Allin - FREAKS, FAGGOTS, DRUNKS AND JUNKIES
Vinyl edition of what is probably GG Allin's greatest studio album.
This was GG's fourth album when it was originally released on
Homestead Records in 1988. Recorded with a backing band featuring
members of New England punk/thrash heavies Psycho, this one contains
some of GG's best songs. "Die When You Die" is arguably the most
famous GG Allin song and this album features the original, best
version of the live warhorse. It also includes GG's rewrite of David
Allen Coe's "Longhair Redneck" titled "Outlaw Scumfuc." The punkest
man alive (at the time) at his peak.

Plasmatics - Wendy O. Williams – BEYOND THE VALLEY OF 1984
This is their second album and features some of the best songwriting
of their career, as well as a lean and tight sound combing metal, punk

after its release.

Dwarves - Dwarves Limited 10 Inch
Way limited 10" picture disc vinyl split, one side Dwarves, live KSZU
FM Stanford, recorded in 2004. The other side is Dwarves singer Blag
Dahlia covering AC/DC ("Big Balls") and the Ramones ("The KKK Took My
Baby Away") as well as some originals. This record is limited to 1,030
copies and these are the last of them. Full color picture disc of a
delightful young woman in a Mexican wrestling mask and not much else.

-What? Re-discovery? What's this all about? I am so very glad you
asked. For the next few weeks the regular "At The Altar" column is
taking on a specific theme. A history lesson, if you will. Oh, and you
will! You may not know this, but Detritus is gearing up for its 10th
Anniversary! Yes, ten full years of metal/hard rock news right at your
fingertips and in that time many people have helped put this glorious,
fact-laden "publication" together. Yet like all relationships, people
come and go. Some stay in touch and some simply disappear. However, we
here at Detritus won't every let anyone escape unscathed, so for the
next month or so I will be bringing you updates on some of the
talented people that graced us with their creativity and insight!
First up, Mr. Clay Marshall!
-Clay was with Detritus from almost the beginning (how early I can't
say; my records of issues before #25 are incomplete). Clay is best
known to Detritus readers for his live review column called "L.A.
ALIVE!" Clay grew up in Nashville but moved to L.A. to experience the
musical environment he loved. In his own words from July 1999, "I grew
up on MTV -- specifically, the mid- to late-'80s rock that was all
over the channel at the time. Poison was my first favorite band, and
also my first concert (FLESH & BLOOD tour for my 11th birthday!). Two
years earlier, I was Gene Simmons as part of my third grade talent
show, complete with face paint and wagging tongue. As I got older --
and could manage to stay awake later on Saturday nights -- I
discovered MTV's 'Headbanger's Ball.' I became exposed to the bands I
couldn't readily see during the day -- artists like Anthrax, Steve
Vai, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, King's X, Fates Warning, Galactic
Cowboys, Type O Negative, Gilby Clarke and above all, Savatage. The
'Edge Of Thorns' video hooked me, and six years and 23 Savatage live
shows later, I'm still raising my fist to the metal child." I wonder
how high that count is now?
Clay was a regular contributor thru 2002 when his real life in the
music industry pulled him away. But since then, does he still live the
true life of Metal? Yes.
"I'm still a slave to the metal, for better or worse. I can't remember
exactly when I stopped doing my Detritus column, but beginning in
2002, I began a nearly five-year stint working for Century Media
Records; I then spent a year working for a boutique management company
that represented a handful of metal heavyweights; and nowadays, I work
for Prosthetic Records. I still freelance on occasion, most recently
for Guitar World and Classic Rock (UK)."
See that? You can't keep a Metal brother down! So Clay, what are you
listening to right now?
"Danko Jones, Into Eternity and old Kiss and AC/DC records."

-Metallica chatter... Among my friends and co-workers, I've been
hearing DEATH MAGNETIC feedback such as "This is the best thing
they've done since the black album...which ain't exactly saying much,"
"I'm not hating it," "It's good but the production blows," "I don't
think Lars even owns a double bass pedal anymore," "I can't believe
they did 'The Unforgiven III' -- that's lame!," and "Wow that booklet
is freaky." In general, positive vibes but nobody seems to be blown
away. Me, I dig the album but so far the songs still kind of blend
together, and I feel bassist Robert Trujillo's talents are
underutilized. I like "Cyanide" and the instrumental "Suicide &
Redemption" best so far.
-The Cubs better to it this weekend! :) And although I am not a Pearl
Jam fan AT ALL I must pass on some info -- main man Eddie Vedder will
reportedly release his new Cubs fan song "All The Way" (Or is it
"Going All The Way?" I can't remember.) today (September 19) at
PearlJam.com. I just heard a bit about this on the radio this morning
and haven't had time to really research it; presumably it'll just be a
free MP3 download or something. The bit I heard indicated Cubs legend
Ernie "Let's Play Two!" Banks asked Vedder -- a big Cubs fan from the
Chicago suburb Evanston -- to record a song, so he did. That's cool.
-So there I was, reading a newspaper article on Hootie & The Blowfish
front man Darius Rucker going country (don't ask... it was a long
train ride home) and the author mentions... Vinnie Vincent! No joke.
Her angle was along the lines of "Many rockers have gone to Nashville
to get back to their roots," and she actually named-dropped Vinnie
Vincent. Yes I was floored. Not only was I shocked to see his name in
the Chicago Tribune in 2008, I was also surprised to read he
apparently went to Nashville in 1990. Had no idea.
-I'm diggin' Patrick's idea for his columns. And just for the record,
I started "Detritus" as a column in issue # 7-2 of Kurt Torster's hard
rock e-zine SFK back in October of 1995. (It was just called "Tim's
Column" as I didn't pick the name "Detritus" until later.) The first
official stand-alone issue of "Detritus" came out the week of February
15, 1999, and we made our debut at Yahoo! Groups with issue #21 the
week of July 5, 1999. History lesson complete. :)

These guys have probably released two more albums since this one came
out but I don't want to let this review slide any further... This is
the second disc since famed guitarist Gus G. left the ranks, and I'm
happy to report the band is doing just fine, thank you very much.
Leather-lunged vocalist R.D. Liapakis (Valley's Eve) and guitarist
Markus Pohl (Symphorce) lead the charge here, through 11 tracks of
classy, classic metal that will assuredly appeal to fans of vintage,
heavy Judas Priest, Savatage, Metal Church, and even a little
Metallica. (There's a also a nod to the distant past with a cover of
Sabbath's "Paranoid.") The mid- and up-tempo songs charge along with
conviction, throw in a smidge of thrash here and there, and always
showcase Liapakis' excellent vocal work. Kudos to the guitar team of
Pohl and Martin Grimm (Headstone Epitaph), too. Aggressive, meat 'n'
potatoes metal for the masses.

URIAH HEEP - WAKE THE SLEEPER (A-) Sanctuary, 2008

Ten years have passed since Uriah Heep's last album but they are
finally back in impressive form on WAKE THE SLEEPER. Stylistically
similar to Heep's last two releases SONIC ORIGAMI and SEA OF LIGHT,
WAKE THE SLEEPER manages to blend early trademarks such as harmony
vocals and dramatic keyboards with a late '70s radio rock feel not far
removed from the thoughtful accessibility more associated with artists
like Boston, Styx and Foreigner. WAKE THE SLEEPER gets off the ground
fast with the title track, essentially a hard charging instrumental
revealing a band firing on all cylinders. "Overload" follows and is
definitely a highlight, featuring excellent guitar work from original
member Mick Box and a strong vocal by Bernie Shaw. "Tears Of The
World" is another gem, pretty much encapsulating the band's current
emphasis on melodic hard rock, and check out the killer performance by
new drummer Russell Gilbrook on tracks like the lyrically intriguing
"Ghost Of The Ocean" (about female pirates!) and vintage rocker
"Shadow." These are auspicious times for many venerable artists as
we've had outstanding releases from the likes of Whitesnake, Dokken,
Journey and Judas Priest this year, and now you can safely add Uriah
Heep to that list with this fine outing. Welcome back guys!!!
