-Alice Cooper: Along Came A... Video
Well folks, he's at it again...
Alice Cooper, your favourite shock rocker, has again succeeded in
shocking the censors in America. But we have just the remedy for you!
Last night Alice played "Vengeance Is Mine" from ALONG CAME A SPIDER
on "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" on the CBS Network in the
U.S. And he wasn't allowed to do it the way he wanted to! He wanted to
re-enact a piece of his new video by picking a female victim from the
audience to choke with a silk scarf. But the TV Station wouldn't allow
it! Huh?! Like we don't see violence on the news? Anyways... Alice
wasn't allowed to. All's not fair in TV and Rock 'n' Roll it seems.
BUT -- in an effort to show the TV station what they missed out on --
we've decided to move up the premiere of the uncut, uncensored video
and put it out for YOU, the fans, online today! Who needs TV? Love him
or hate him, Alice Cooper's a legend with a killer show and a killer
concept. And this video is no exception. Clocking in at 9+ min. long,
it features three (yes, three!) songs from the ALONG CAME A SPIDER
album. (And Slash crushes in the vid btw!)
So, if you already have the now-famous Alice Cooper Pinball Widget
installed on your page somewhere, you'll see that the video just shows
up in there. If not, install it because due to the awesome response
we're extending the game until the end of the year! Every month from
now until the end of the year we'll be announcing new winners, so
check it out and enjoy!
http://www.spv.de/alicecooper
NO MATTER WHAT -- make sure to check out the brand new video on one or
all of the following sites and tell us, Alice, Slash, your neighbors,
your cat, the dentist and even your favorite presidential candidate
what you think! Whoever's into freedom of speech should get a taste of
Alice Cooper's rock 'n' roll, so it's up to you! Enjoy!

-KOCH Signs Deal With Metal Guitar Virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen
Port Washington, NY -- KOCH Entertainment Distribution announced today
that it has signed an exclusive physical and digital distribution deal
with Rising Force Records and its flagship artist neo-classical metal
guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen.
Rising Force Records was launched in 2008 with the primary function to
release and market new and back catalogue material from the world
renowned guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen as well as signing new
talent. The first title slated for release is PERPETUAL FLAME, a brand
new recording from Malmsteen featuring ex-Judas Priest/Iced Earth
singer Tim "Ripper" Owens to be released via KOCH on October 14th.
Additional titles and release dates will be announced by the label at
a later date.
"I am truly excited that Rising Force records will be distributed via
KOCH, and with our brand new release PERPETUAL FLAME as well as future
releases of back catalogue materials, this is a very important and
exciting relationship," comments Yngwie Malmsteen.
"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to shred with Yngwie on the
launch of Rising Force Records," added Michael Rosenberg, President of
KOCH Entertainment Distribution.
2008 is turning out to be one of the busiest years of Yngwie's career.
In addition to the release of his forthcoming new album, he will be
inducted into Hollywood's Rock Walk on October 13th, a new Fender/
Yngwie Malmsteen custom shop guitar will be unveiled later in the year
(with a limited run of 100 instruments) and there will be a slew of CD
reissues of Yngwie classics. All the while, the accolades continue to
pour in: Roadie Crew Magazine organized a poll in which 330 respected
rock guitarists were asked to vote for their favorite guitarist of
all-time. Yngwie checked in at a lofty number 3 -- behind fellow
legends Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.

-Edguy Films "Ministry Of Saints" Video
German melodic metallers Edguy have issued the following update:
"Edguy have just returned from Belgrade [Serbia] where they have shot
a video clip for the song 'Ministry Of Saints' from their forthcoming
new studio album TINNITUS SANCTUS, out on November 14th (Europe) and
TBA (North America). As there will be no EP before the album release
the video clip will be shown on this Web site during the next weeks."
TINNITUS SANCTUS was recorded at Gate Studios in Wolfsburg, Germany
with producer Sascha Paeth.
In a recent interview, Edguy front man Tobias Sammet stated about the
group's new material:
"We don't go back to the roots. We never denied who we are and where
we come from, so I don't see a reason to go back to wherever. I go
straight forward and follow my heart as I've always done, TINNITUS
SANCTUS is exactly the music we wanna play, we are happy and I don't
give a f*ck if it's gonna be our biggest-selling album or not.
"It's so great, even if my career would go down the drain and this
would be the last album, I'd be more than happy to be remembered as
the guy who recorded TINNITUS SANCTUS. I'd rather ruin my carreer with
a creative killer album like that than trying to play safe with a
boring stereotype power metal stinker constructed on a drawing table.
"We have a couple of song titles such as 'Dragonfly,' 'Dead Or Rock,'
'Wake Up Dreaming Black' or 'Sex Fire Religion.' And we'll shoot a
video for a very heavy midtempo anthem by the name of 'Ministry Of
Saints.' And there'll be a bonus track called 'Aren't You A Little
Pervert Too?' which is quite nasty."

"NEW WORLD ASYLUM is nothing short of killer!!! American heavy metal

HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Leatherwolf, The Triple Axe Attack, are once again
reunited and shredding metal in near classic formation to play some
fall shows.
Oct. 16 - Coach House - San Juan Capistrano, CA -- Charity Event
Oct. 17 - Cheyenne Saloon - Las Vegas, NV
Oct. 18 - Paladinos - Tarzana, CA
Leatherwolf is headlining a benefit for Jeff Campbell, former beloved
light-man from the Country Club in the '80s, at the Coach House. The
17th & 18th shows are in support of their album NEW WORLD ASYLUM with
a returning Mike Olivieri, original vocalist, Leatherwolf is now
issuing a re-worked version of their acclaimed 2006 comeback disc,
titled NEW WORLD ASYLUM.
Long before British metal legends Iron Maiden picked up on the
concept, a pack of hungry Huntington Beach, CA-based teenagers,
collectively known as Leatherwolf, pioneered and perfected the heavy
metal Triple Axe Attack -- documented via a tri-fecta of critically
acclaimed and much worshipped '80's scorchers. The eponymous debut EP,
expanded to a full-length LP, entitled ENDANGERED SPECIES for
international release, and a pair of stunning albums for Island
Records, LEATHERWOLF and STREET READY (yielding the MTV videos "The
Calling" and "Hideaway," respectively), saw the band flying the flag
of decidedly European-styled metal amidst a sea of formulaic L.A. and
O.C. contemporaries.

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Announcement
TSM/SLW Promotions are delighted to welcome to the gang Swedish
rocker's Griffen.
Band: Griffen
Album: LINKED IN ETERNITY
Genre: Metal Rock
Release Date: Out Now
Web links:
http://www.griffen.se/
http://www.myspace.com/griffentheband
Griffen came about when five guys with a long individual musical
history, felt that they had a need to get their collective love for
hardrocking metal out of their systems. Griffen is all about that
love! And as you know you don't share real love with whoever... no no!
you need to hook up with people that can satisfy your needs, meet your
standards & awake your curiosity to further the experience. But that
is not enough! If you take out the best individuals and put them
together, it doesn't mean you have a good rock band... you have to go
for the best blend to create a good wholeness. Griffen are so lucky!
because they have got it: the rock'n'roll brew.... Welcome to the
heart of Griffen.
Griffen are:
Jorgen Soderberg - Lead vocals
Tomi Peltonen - Lead guitars/vocals
Stefan Tornblom - Guitars
Kristian Huotari - Drums
Harri Tuovila - Bass
PRESS
"This is a cracking mini CD from Sweden's Griffen who come over in the
Bad Moon Rising, Y&T, Misha Calvin, Dio vein. First song 'Linked In
Eternity' proves this and is a fine melodic rocker with strong guitar
riffs from Tomi Peltonen and Stefan Tornblom. Singer Jorgen Soderberg
comes over like a mix of Kal Swan, Dave Meniketti and Tony Martin and
is a fine singer.
"This beefy melodic style continues on the equally excellent 'Secret
Fire.' 'Falling Inside' is pure guitar driving melodic rock with a
catchy chorus, this is again like Bad Moon Rising. 'The Hydra' is
darker and heavier with solid riffs and is different from the four
other tracks, perhaps chanting a grungier darker side reminscent to
Soundgarden. It's back to the hard rocking with 'Life Is In The Way,'
once again I can't find any fault with this track, it's very catchy
and again in the Bad Moon Rising and Y&T vein.
"Overall, Sweden gives us yet another chuncky melodic rock outfit in
Griffen who are not afraid to explore their styles. The debut album I
predict will be a monster." - Fireworks UK
"I have no choice but to really praise four, equally direct and non
artificial, heavy rock tunes, fantastically performed in all aspects,
by skilful musicians. The singer, Jörgen Söderberg has a genuine voice
and Tomi Peltonen delivers both high class solos as well as riffs..."
- Sweden Rock Magazine
"Their craftsmanship and their sense for melodies makes you think of
them as old studio pro's. This is a fact that also comes to show in in
the very balanced production. The only thing that shows that this is a
demo is the wrapping of the CD... This is quality from beginning to
end and I sincerely hope that some record company gets a hold of
Griffen a.s.a.p" - Power Of Metal
TSM/SLW Promotions are delighted to welcome to the gang hard working
rockers Heritage from Athens, Greece.

Label: None/Independent
Genre: Rock

Heritage was formed in November 2006 by Kostas, Dimos & Bill. After a
few rehearsals Heritage found their our own sound and personal heavy
rock style. Finally in March 2007 the band wrote their first demo ONE
MORE FOR THE ROAD. After a few live performances with some great Greek
bands.
Heritage is finally ready to get in studio to record our their first
full-length album due later this year. The band gives live shows kick
asses all around Greece and if you want to find out what the band are
about go and see the BAND live...
Heritage are:
Dimos - Guitars and Vocals
Kostas - Bass
Bill - Drums
PRESS
"This band plays stoner metal with a lot of Fuzz and wah-wah. Very
Nice. The three songs which comprise this demo are so good that they
make you wish there were more. The band's music speaks for itself. I
hope we hear from Heritage soon, and I also hope we can watch them
perform on stage." - Metal Hammer
"The sound is very good with the guitars being heavy and the drums and
bass really doomy. The band is inspired by Kyuss, Sabbath, Monster
Magnet and more. In the demo CD you can also find the lyrics and more
promo material. After the release of their demo Heritage have been
working really hard, performing live concerts throughout Greece,
writting new songs, perfecting their existing ones, getting drunk and
having fun. In the meanwhile they were also looking for a second lead
guitarist. I am not sure if this quest is at an end, but if my info
about the guitarist is correct then the mixing of them four will be
explosive." - Metal Eagle.com
TSM/SLW Promotions are delighted to welcome to the gang British metal
band Cavalar from London.

(iTunes)
Cavalar is a powerful four-piece heavy rock London band. Their live
shows emulate their name, which is an expression from the Portuguese
language, meaning "super charged." The drummer Arnaldo "ARN" Rogano
and the singer Twitch formed the band at the end of 2004. The lineup
of Cavalar is completed with Daniele Panza on guitar and Max Torres on
bass.
The first album titled AS A METAL OF FACT was produced by Atila
Ardanuy and Arnaldo Rogano and has been recently released worldwide
through the well known Australian Label Dead Famous.
In preparation for the new 2008 reissue, the album has undergone a
transformation with stunning new artwork by Gustavo Sazes at Abstrata.
Additionally, it has been expertly re-mastered by Heros Trench at
Mister Som. It's being distributed through The Genepool Records in
Europe (Oct. 2008). The album contains 12 original songs.
Cavalar are:
Twitch - Vocals
Dan Panza - Guitar
Max Torres - Bass
Arn - Drums
PRESS
"AS A METAL OF FACT is a good album and really all the songs sound
good. The good thing is that even if they play an 'old' music it
sounds however modern. Plus, the songs are a bit punchier than with a
band like Black Sabbath. It's really well done and plus, the recording
is really good and the CD looks extremely professional. Classic old
school Hard Rock, Heavy and Stoner Metal fans, this is a must for
you!" - Metal Storm
"Classic Sabbath fans, rejoice at the wonderful sounds of AS A METAL
OF FACT, an album that is as good as recent releases from peers like
Down, Crowbar, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Witchcraft. Oh yeah,
there's also a killer version of Sabbath's 'Hole In The Sky' here as
well. Check it out." - Sea Of Tranquility
"You could technically take off some points due to the lack of
originality and overt aping of Sabbath, but if you did, I (and the
band I'm sure) would just tell you to f*ck off. I shake my head that
this band is unsigned. Labels -- wake the f*ck up! This f*cking
awesome!" - Metal Rules

-Z Records News
[Note: This is a compilation of several bulletins. - Tim]
Big Noize First Act To Be Announced For Z Rock 09
Plans are now underway for Z Rock 09 and during the next week we will
be announcing the entire lineup. Many contracts are already signed or
will be signed during the next 24 hours. We are sure you will agree
that this lineup is the strongest ever assembled for a Z Rock event.
The 2009 show will be staged at JB's in Dudley purely due to the need
for a larger capacity venue and its central location for everyone in
the U.K. JB's is renowned throughout the U.K. and we are looking
forward to returning there after a three-year absence.
Now to our first major announcement... It is with great pleasure that
we confirm the appearance of a supergroup who have been the talk of
the 'net over the past few months: namely Big Noize. The band's
pedigree is undisputable and they will be like a rock freight train
passing through JB's on May 30th. Phil Soussan and Vinny Appice made
the following comment concerning their appearance...
From Phil Soussan: "I am really thrilled to be coming back to my
homeland for the Big U.K. launch of Big Noize at the Z-Rock Fest. We
shall be playing nothing but the big hits at this show to introduce
this new supergroup to the British audience."
From Vinny Appice: "I like being involved in things that rock and Z
Rock Fest ROCKS loud!"
Big Noize are...
Joe Lynn Turner - vocals
In a career that spans over 30 years and over 60 album credits, Turner
is best remembered for his work with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Deep
Purple and Yngwie Malmsteen. He has also contributed to a diverse
array of other artists' albums including Billy Joel, Cher, Mick Jones
(Foreigner), Michael Bolton and many others. Recently, his tours, CD
releases, appearances on VH1 and nationally syndicated radio shows
have revived interest in this singer who was a veritable MTV
heartthrob during the channel's '80s heyday.
Phil Soussan - bass
Soussan was a member of Ozzy Osbourne's band at the height of Ozzy's
career. He has worked with Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Toto, Billy
Idol, John Waite, Vince Neil, Richie Kotzen and more. Phil was also
active in writing songs for them as well as many other artists, which
he continues to do. Most notable is Ozzy's biggest hit single "Shot In
The Dark." Last year he released his debut solo album, VIBRATE. He
also currently serves as a NARAS Governor on the Board of the
Recording Academy (the Grammys).
Carlos Cavazo - guitars
Cavazo is an original member of the multi-platinum band Quiet Riot.
The band sold over 10 million albums between the early '80s and 2000
and Carlos earned "guitar hero" status with his powerful solos and
wailing passages. Quiet Riot's METAL HEALTH album featured the famous
cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel The Noise," which is still played on
classic rock radio stations and at sporting events around the world.
Vinny Appice - drums
Vinny is best known as the incredible drummer who was the power and
rhythm behind Dio throughout the band's career. He also worked with
Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, John Lennon and many others. Appice has
recorded/co-written songs on over 25 albums including seven multi-
platinum records. While he remains loyal to Big Noize, he is currently
touring with Heaven & Hell, along with Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Geezer
Butler and Ronnie James Dio.
Z Rock 09 Goes Glamtastic With Wig Wam!
Norway's Wig Wam have confirmed their appearance at Z Rock 09 day one

out of Z Rock 08 due to family issues Mike Shotton is gagging at the

Prepare For The Watchmen -- The Latest Addition To The Z Roster
Z are extremely proud to announce the signing of the Argentinean act
Watchmen. Label boss Mark Alger had been chasing the band down for
nearly a year with no luck, that was until he mentioned the band to
Snow's manager Ricardo Pugailli during a routine business call.
Ricardo helped bridge the language barrier and started off
communication between the band and Z which resulted in the deal being
finally inked on September 27th.
Hailing from Buenos Aires Watchmen are ready to set Europe alight,
featuring the amazing vocal performances of Ivan Sencion [who could
take David Coverdale's place in Whitesnake any day], the amazing
guitar work of Emmanuel Lopez plus the talents of Germain Leth,
Leonardo Palmieri and Dukke. The band's 10 track debut will be
released in Europe on October 27th.

Open Letter For Your Input For Z Rock 09
please reply to: zrockagency@...
1st October 2008
Hi,
You are receiving this mail either because you've supported Z Rock
shows in the past or you have e-mailed us recently regarding next
year's show.
We are working like mad to finalise the bill which is going to be
without any doubt the strongest ever, however due to the credit crunch
we are erring on the side of caution as we know people only have a
certain amount of disposable income. This did hit us last May and
caused problems for the 08 show; we do not want that situation
occurring again hence this message.
All acts that have been announced are 100% confirmed and locked into
contracts. We've had a lot of mails regarding FM playing on the 30th
but I am sorry to say the rumours are not true. We did agree on fees,
etc., and the date for the show was moved but recording commitments
made the appearance unworkable in the end. However the door is open
for FM in 2010 if the 09 show is a success.
Now to the reason for this mail. We have a major U.S. act at contract
signing stage. They have never appeared in Europe [as far as we are
aware] and they are on a lot of peoples' wish lists. As with a lot of
major U.S. acts they want payment up front months in advance of shows.
Obviously so far so good with the acts already booked, [but] the act
in question require a large payment and to realise those funds we
would have to be pretty certain that circa 500 tickets will be sold
prior to Christmas.
This is where you come in. We decided to see what your feelings are as
we know the crunch is hitting everyone right now. Would you purchase
your tickets prior to the Christmas holidays if the U.S. act was to
your liking? Please be blunt and tell us what you think.
We do have other acts in negotiations and your support is greatly
appreciated. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing
you all at Z Rock 09 and then continuing on into the following year.
Best Regards
Mark

-Joetown Posts New Songs Online From PILLS AND AMMO Album
Melodic hard rockers Joetown have uploaded new tracks from their debut
PILLS AND AMMO online at http://www.MySpace.com/Joetown . The album
was released by Joetown front man Joe Delaney's own Joetown Records.
Hailing from Wallingford, Connecticut, Joetown has made a reputation
as one most exciting live acts on the East Coast. The band's explosive
live show has allowed them to earn a cult-like following across the
country, while front man Joe Delaney's accomplishments as a
songwriter/producer have turned him into a rawk entrepreneur of the
highest order. His grinding work ethic has seen him performing/
recording with groups such as Kings Of Reality and American Trash with
Steve Broderick (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), producing both albums for
critically acclaimed aggressive hard rockers Gargantua Soul, while
holding a prestigious position with Bugera Guitar Amplifiers that
provide thundering amps to everyone from King's X to hip-hop act
N.E.R.D.
With the release of PILLS AND AMMO, Joetown is set to unleash a tidal
wave of high-performance rock that has been missing since the '90s.
The album's unapologetic rock n' roll takes shifts through a variety
of styles effortlessly, invoking comparisons to group like Guns N'
Roses and Alice In Chains, yet appealing to fans of rock legend Ted
Nugent.
The band has also announced they will be giving away merchandise,
guitar gear and promotional items for fans that join the Joetown
street-team at http://www.JoetownRocks.com/ . Fans are encouraged to
join the street-team to qualify.

-Eternal Descent's Llexi Leon Secures ESP Guitars Endorsement
Eternal Descent also features ESP Guitars & Artists in comic book, art
on ESP Guitar
LONDON, UK -- Eternal Descent's Llexi Leon has officially formed a
mutually beneficial strategic alliance with ESP Guitars. Leon, an
Incendium Records recording artist performing goth/industrial/ metal
music, has used ESP Guitars throughout his career and now endorses the
product. ESP Guitars have also provided a prototype Eclipse model
guitar which will feature artwork from the upcoming Eternal Descent
comic book series. In addition, the comics will feature the likeness
of other ESP endorsed artists and ESP guitars throughout the series.
"It's great to be involved with a company I have so much respect for.
I've been using ESP guitars for years, and they've always been at the
cutting edge when it comes to function and form," affirms Leon.
"Awesome designs and killer tone! I feel like my voice can really
travel through the ESPs. They react to the nuances of my playing where
other electric guitars just fall short. When it came to creating a
comic book realization of my concept album, it was the obvious choice
to have ESP guitars in the artwork too. The F-series and EX body
styles already look like something demonic or supernatural, so they
fit right in! The ongoing collaboration between my Eternal Descent
comic book and ESP guitars, is a very exciting project. Its great to
be a part of the ESP artist family, and I'm looking forward to
including other ESP artists in my work."
Llexi Leon, the mastermind behind the multimedia concept Eternal
Descent began making noise in London, England in 2005. His highly
intricate guitar style exhibits the many influences corralled to
create his intense sound -- from classical, flamenco, electronica, and
ambient genres to the more prominent genres of rock and metal. All of
these genres infused to one, Leon has created a cinematic fantasia
with a gothic flair, which will soon branch out to a comic book
series.
Leon began playing classical guitar at eight years old and progressed
to electric guitar at 13, the now-22-year-old has continued to broaden
his horizons. Leon has since studied piano, violin, and percussion,
adding diversity to his instrumental performances, whilst continuing
to embrace new guitar techniques.
Leon began incorporating original music with art and writing ideas,
soon realizing he had to bring the concept to life. His main
aspirations are bringing stories to life through escapism, utilizing
everyday events and his vivid imagination to create more avenues for
his multimedia enterprise. To prove its tangibility, Leon has
assembled a team of artists to create the Eternal Descent comic book
series with the first issue slated for publication in early 2009. He
also began his own production company, Incendium Records to release
his first concept album LOSING FAITH and the EP THE PHANTOM OF THE
OPERA. This fulfilled his desire to have all Eternal Descent media
developed to the highest standards, under one roof.
Having grown significantly over just a few short years, Incendium is
now working with major names in the music and comic book industries.
In 2009, Eternal Descent plans to expand globally in both areas.
Incendium is already working closely with ESP Guitars on several
exciting projects. Expect to see some custom signature guitars in the
comic books and some headlining recording artists performing on them
throughout the storylines. The possibility of these concepts could
crossover to real life.
Leon was recently approached by Faith Guitars as an endorsee for their
products, and the two are working on a series of promotional
collaborations, video demonstrations, and custom acoustic instruments
for future Eternal Descent recordings.
Orange Amplifiers has also been an extremely supportive collaborator.
The have been creating and developing anything Leon requires for the
upcoming studio album, including an amplifier that doesn't look like
your typical Orange amp, but still has the trademark tones associated
with the brand. Orange-inspired designs will also be featured in the
comic book on backline and an occasional wall of cabinets.
With these powerful collaborators and Leon's creativity combined, the
Eternal Descent comic books and album releases are sure to explode
worldwide, making Incendium a premier multimedia conglomerate.

*** AT THE ALTAR: RE-DISCOVERY ***

by Patrick Brower (patrickbrower@...)
L.A.? Done. New York? Check. Where to now, you ask? Well my little
geographic goblins, how about right in my very town, Chicago,
Illinois? No? You're not ready for that? Well then let's head about 70
miles west of Chicago to DeKalb, Illinois and to the current home of
Mr. Rick Berg!
-Rick forcefully invaded the Detritus family in 2004 as a (brutal) CD
reviewer. I don't mean his reviews were brutal, I mean Rick loves the
stuff that makes your ears bleed. Death, black, doom, grindcore, all
the really heavy, really fast stuff went to Rick. And he loved it.
Rick's reviews had an amazing ability to boil the essence of the disc
down to a few very concise sentences. He never over-wrote but always
gave you the exact description of what it was he was listening to. And
if I'm not mistaken, Rick just may have given the only "D-" grade I
ever remember seeing in Detritus! (I looked it up; it was Necro – THE
PRE-FIX FOR DEATH in issue #309 from March 21, 2005. Can I have
parenthetical notes in my own column? -Patrick) [Yes, and that album
did suck. - Tim] Rick eventually made his way into a column and I
christened it "Big Sounds - Little Words" and I meant little in
number, not letters. Rick and I had many a wild concert adventure in
Chicago during that time and I am a poorer metal fan for the current
absence of such.
-Now that Rick has moved on from Detritus and doesn't have the
staggering impact of my presence in his life on a weekly basis, does
he bang his head as hard as ever? Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times YES!
"I still bleed metal all the time while selling comics to the
shrinking masses. Being poor and irrationally hating MP3s/MP3 players
and the like (with a f*cking passion), means I listen more and more to
Pandora.com for free. Currently I am listening to Slipknot's brilliant
ALL HOPE IS GONE and The Sword's GODS OF THE EARTH. Their song
'Maiden, Mother And The Crone' is the single best thing I have heard
in years. I can't wait for new Metallica to drop this week (Yeah, he
wrote this a few weeks ago. - Patrick) and think the upcoming TWILIGHT
OF THE THUNDER GOD by Amon Amarth will be the greatest thing I have
ever heard. F*ck popular music!"
-No truer words, my friend. Back at you next time with another
remembrance of writers past. Be prepared to climb a tower...

an album track-by-track. And speaking of magazines, check out Rolling

BAD BISCUT – WE STILL BELIEVE THE HYPE (A) Main Man Records, 2008
22 tracks, RT: 66:00
I imagine that just about every music fan has a "local favorite" band
from their area that they think "coulda been a contender." In case you
missed my mention of this disc in my last "From The Mega-Vault" column
a while back, New Jersey's Bad Biscut were that "shoulda, coulda,
woulda" band for me and a lot of other fellow Garden State residents
back in the early '90s. I saw them live several times back in my
college days and their blend of sleazy punk/metal (sorta like a love
child of the Ramones and GNR doing bong hits with Skid Row) made for a
fun, energetic show every time. The Biscut briefly flirted with the
big time when they won the AC/DC themed "Highway To Fame" contest on
MTV and released their one and only studio album (1994's THE AMERICAN
DREAM?) on Cathedral Records (a label owned by Jon Bon Jovi's cousin,
Tony Bongiovi), but for whatever reason things just never came
together for them, and sadly, Bad Biscut split up by the middle of the
'90s. I never expected to hear from Bad Biscut again, so imagine my
surprise when I discovered this newly released odds-and-ends
collection while trolling CDBaby.com! Since then, WE STILL BELIEVE THE
HYPE has practically been welded into my CD player on a permanent loop
and it'll definitely have a place amongst my top 10 releases of 2008.
High praise? Perhaps, but this is simply a fun, addictive disc from
beginning to end. The 22 tracks that make up HYPE were recorded
between 1991 and 1996 and consist of early demos, a couple of live
tracks, and material from an extremely limited edition 7-inch single
called CULT 45 (which I was especially jazzed to finally hear, as I
missed out on snagging a copy back in the day). Several of these songs
("Chelsea Hotel" and "Day In The Life") were re-recorded for their THE
AMERICAN DREAM debut, but most are new to my ears. Of the "new" tracks
my personal highlights would be "Thunders Falling" (an ode to the late
guitar legend Johnny Thunders), "Blood Suckin' Freaks" and the catchy-
as-hell opener "Valvoline," but truthfully there is not a clinker on
this disc. Bad Biscut started life as an all-covers band and their
weird/awesome taste in cover selections is readily apparent via
renditions of classics as varied as AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" (which
is the tune that won the MTV contest -- it is quite simply the most
BAD-ASS version of this song you will ever hear!), George Michael's
"Faith" (which pre-dates the Limp Bizkit version of the same tune, by
the way, and needless to say is far superior to theirs as well), and
hellacious rips through the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You"
(!), the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and the Ramones' "Chinese
Rock" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" (recorded live in '94 with special guest
Scotti Hill of Skid Row sitting in), among others. WE STILL BELIEVE
THE HYPE is solid as a rock, entertaining as hell and takes you on a
wild ride through this underrated band's all-too-short history. Odds
and ends releases like these are usually intended for diehards only,
but anyone who likes their hard rock a little on the gritty side (with
a pinch of punk for extra flavor) should definitely dig this release.
Main Man Records has also reissued THE AMERICAN DREAM? in a special
deluxe edition and I highly recommend that one as well. (Both discs
are available via CDBaby.) Check this band out and show some love for
a long lost Jersey legend!

EVERGREY – TORN (B+) SPV/Steamhammer, 2008
12 tracks, RT: 59:29

TORN is finally here! I have been anxiously awaiting this CD ever
since I was disappointed by Evergrey's last CD MONDAY MORNING
APOCALYPSE. Everything that I thought was missing from that album --
the long guitar solos, moody transitions, lengthier songs and better
audio mix -- is present on TORN. These things are what were stripped
away on MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE and truly took away from the
potential that it had. Here on TORN these missing elements are back
and the band is focused with vengeance. The only negative I have with
this recording is that the mix could have been slightly better. It is
a definite step above the overly compressed sound of MONDAY MORNING
APOCALYPSE but the guitars do not have the precision and distinction
as previously heard on THE INNER CIRCLE or RECREATION DAY. There are
times where Tom S. Englund's vocals could be up front a little more.
There is also a lack of keyboards on TORN when compared to previous
releases (although I believe this was completely intentional as the
band was going for a heavier sound). I have found the mix to improve
when listening with a good set of headphones but on an open stereo
there are muddy spots. But enough of that...let's get to the songs.
"Broken Wings" is a great opener with a good guitar solo and cool
transition piece before jumping back into the chorus. These types of
transitions are what I was referring to previously about being missed
on MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE. "Soaked" is next and you can hear every
bit of pain and anguish in Tom's voice as he belts out the opening
lines before a heavy rhythm joins in. This is a heavy up-tempo song
that uses the keyboards sparingly, but when they are used they color
the song perfectly as in the piano melody in the chorus and the
haunting atmospheric piece played behind the verses. This song will
transition well live. A very melodic and tasteful solo. "Fear" is one
of the heavier songs on the album. It starts with a brutal riff by
Henrik Danhage. But with as heavy as it is and remains through the
chorus, Tom really stays focused on the melody and it never loses its
ability to make you want to sing along. After another very melodic
solo one of the best transition pieces of the album takes us from the
solo to the last verse/chorus. Rikard Zander's ability to contribute
eerie atmospheric keyboard textures is highly valuable. "When Kingdoms
Fall" is the fourth track on the album and one of my personal
favorites. After starting off with a steady heavy beat the verse opens
up to a slower more simple beat with a blend of piano and background
guitar that gives you the feeling of listening to the song in slow
motion, and the layering of voices in the chorus adds to the dramatic
effect of the song as the song picks up in tempo. Tom delivers the
lyrics with such conviction on this song that you can't help but get
sucked in. The solo piece is very reminiscent of something you would
have heard on IN SEARCH OF TRUTH. I love the fact that the lyrics can
carry a familiar melody without repeating the same words over and
over. "In Confidence" sounds like something that could have come off
MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE. I say that because it's the shortest song
on the disc and is very focused. But with that said it has got a
catchy rhythm and lick played in the chorus. Also the choruses are
carried out a bit longer than they would have been if this song ended
up on MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE. The solo is great as well on this
song. "Fail" was a free download off of the band's Web site. This is a
pretty straightforward Evergrey song and the sound is reminiscent of
IN SEARCH OF TRUTH. The open verses with the intricate chugging and
piano interlacing provides the perfect backdrop for Tom's soulful
voice. The surprise here is the kick ass solo -- starting with a
simple dual harmony it breaks off into a ripping lead full of
hammering and wailing. After another quick chorus, Tom and Henrik
finish up with a very cool double lead. "Numb" is another personal
favorite of mine. The opening vocal melody is my favorite of the disc.
The drop tuning makes the guitar riff just sound sick (in a good way)
as Tom sings. Nice little solo stuck in before the next verse/chorus
and then the coolest transition piece of the album comes before the
main guitar solo, a wicked heavy delayed guitar that is so simple but
so effective. This lends its way into a slower paced lead section that
Tom plays one of his best leads ever in. The title track, "Torn," is
next and even though it's less than five minutes to me it's the most
epic song on the album. It starts out bombastically heavy and pounding
before suddenly dropping of to leave just Tom's sad voice accompanied
by a beautiful acoustic guitar and small string section. I hate to use
the same adjectives but I can't better describe the chorus then to say
how desperate and haunting it sounds... It pulls you through and for
me it's cathartic to turn this song up to 12 and sing along. Tom has
never poured his voice into a song like this one. It's a rollercoaster
ride and the best song on the album... "...if only things were
different" -- this line will stay with you. "Nothing Is Erased" has a
killer riff to start out and the guitar never stops moving throughout
the whole song but never takes away from the flow. Cool solos by both
Tom and Henrik in this song. "Still Walk Alone" is not a bad song but
I'd say it's the weakest of the 12 tracks on here; it does have a long
solo jamming part in the middle that makes it worth listening to.
"These Scars" rounds out the regular version of the CD. Here we get a
guest vocal from the lovely Carina Englund. This is another mid-tempo
moody song that fades the album out with a somber string piece. The
Limited Edition version has a great bonus track, "Caught In A Lie."
These are some of the best lyrics on the album -- surprising since was
considered a bonus track. The way this song ends is a more appropriate
way to end the album. The song starts out heavy and mid-tempo but
halfway through breaks into a piano interlude that soon is joined by
the bass and drums, then the strings...then the light airy vocals and
it just continues to build... A whiny guitar in the background slowly
gives way to the heavy chords and then the wailing solo... I wish they
would do more of this... It's the best musical piece on the entire
album! So overall this is a great return to form for Evergrey; the mix
could be better but it is still way above average. Some may say this
is too similar to the previous works but a good song is a good song...
If you liked any of their previous works you will surely find
something here to like.

GREENHAVEN – THE LAST POWERFUL SECOND (C+) Humble Recordings, 2006

I'm not sure how timely this review is at this point, since the
release date on this CD is 2006 (though I didn't receive it till mid-
'08), and the disc sat around my house for a while before I finally
dug it out of the "to be reviewed" pile. As I sat down to write this I
wondered, "What took them so long to send this to me, anyway? Hell,
does this band even still exist?" but their Web site is still active
and it looks like they're still out there playin' shows, so whatever,
here we go. On a totally random note, at first glance I swore that the
gun-toting, mustachioed desperado looking guy on the CD cover looks
like Chef Gordon Ramsay of "Hell's Kitchen" fame after a two-week
bender, but that's neither here nor there. Greenhaven hails from
Phoenix, Arizona and THE LAST POWERFUL SECOND is their debut release.
They play dirty, burly, high-speed, stoner-style hard rock that I
would put in the same ballpark as latter-era C.O.C., recent Monster
Magnet and Clutch (though they're not as Sabbathy as C.O.C, more
metallic than Clutch, and not as spaced-out as Magnet, you can still
detect the influences of all three). This is the kind of stuff that's
intended to make you boogie, and the ten tracks on offer here do that
job admirably enough by getting in quickly, kicking your butt, and
getting back out again before they overstay their welcome. (Only three
songs on this release crack the three-minute mark!) Oddball song
titles like "Seven Miles To Saturn," "Ape," and "Flunky" caused a few
chuckles and the stage names of several band members are a hoot (the
bassist is "Uncle Dave" and the vocalist's name is "Matt
Strangeways"), but while THE LAST POWERFUL SECOND was a decent listen
while the CD was playing (I especially liked "Limousine" and the ass-
kicking opener, "Waterloo"), most of the tunes didn't leave much of an
impression once the disc was over. I guess THE LAST POWERFUL SECOND
would make a decent enough soundtrack CD for your next keg party or
glue sniffing session as long as you don't expect much of a hangover
in the morning.

Germany's Gun Barrel have been kicking around since the early '00s and
have released three albums prior to this one, but OUTLAW INVASION is
their first to cross my desk. They may not the most original thing
I've heard lately but after several spins of OUTLAW INVASION, I
decided that Gun Barrel are a competent batch of retro-minded rockers,
best described as a blend of Motorhead, AC/DC, Accept, and Saxon (to
name just a few). There's nothing overly complicated on OUTLAW
INVASION, just a collection of catchy, melodic mid-paced anthems about
such tried and true topics as rockin' out, drinkin' beer, kickin' ass
and lovin' anything in a skirt. Vocalist Xaver Drexler sounds a bit
like Marc Storace of Krokus fame at times, and the band is tight, in-
yo'-face, and sufficiently pounding on tunes like the Motorhead-ish
"Front Killers," the Manowar-esque "Brother To Brother," "Wanted Man,"
and "Cheap, Wild & Nasty." There's even a passable ballad in the form
of "Tomorrow Never Comes," and how can you not love a band that
records a song called "M.I.L.F.?" Gun Barrel describe themselves as
"Dirty Heavy Metal Rock N Roll" in their bio and I'd say that pretty
much covers everything you need to know in a nutshell. All you denim
and leather '80s leftovers and lovers of everything Germanic and manic
can pick OUTLAW INVASION up with confidence.

VENDETTA - TYRANNY OF MINORITY (B+) Lion Music, 2007

Let me get this out of the way first: this is not the German
"Vendetta" that released the cult classic GO AND LIVE...STAY AND DIE
through Noise Records back in 1987, it is a new band from England by
the same name. Moving on, then... The success of British power metal
sensations DragonForce seems to have opened the doors for other
melodic metal acts coming out of the U.K. over the past several years.
I personally can't stand DragonForce, but I have found myself digging
such bands as Intense, Headless Cross, and these new contenders.
TYRANNY OF MINORITY is Vendetta's first album, but guitarist/vocalist
Edward Box may be a familiar name to some (though he wasn't to me) as
he has previously released two solo albums through Lion Music. Though
the aforementioned German "Vendetta" was a thrash band, these Brits
are melodic/shred metal through and through (would you expect any less
from Lion Music?), falling somewhere in the neighborhood of EMPIRE-era
Queensryche and BACK FOR THE ATTACK-era Dokken with a dash of Crimson
Glory and a touch of Helloween in spots (mostly due to Box's very Kai
Hansen-esque singing voice). The one-two punch of "Archangel" and the
excellent "Generation Kill" get things off to a rollicking start,
while the two-part epic "Doorways Of The Mind: Transcendence Part 1"
and "Window Of The Soul: Transcendence Part 2" (tracks 4 and 12,
respectively) should satisfy the prog-metal crowd. I also enjoyed
"Plastic God" and the mid-paced "Lost Cause." Box's voice might be the
major stumbling block for some; I like him just fine but other folks
I've played the disc for found him to be a little too "rock 'n' roll"
sounding and not as smooth or grandiose as they'd expected to hear on
material like this. I suppose most regular visitors to the Lion Music
roster are used to hearing guys in the Geoff Tate/Midnight/John Arch
vein, an area in which Box definitely does NOT reside, but that
doesn't detract from my enjoyment of TYRANNY OF MINORITY and those
looking for something a little more rough-and-ready in their shred
might be pleasantly surprised by these newcomers.

Blasting out of Raleigh, North Carolina, Widow was one of those "buzz
bands" I've been reading about in metal mags for several years now but
had not heard for myself till NIGHTLIFE (their third disc) landed in
my lap. I knew I was in for an old-school metal experience before I
even slipped NIGHTLIFE into my player merely due to their connection
with Cruz Del Sur Music, a label that has an excellent roster of
retro-minded metal acts including Pharaoh, Crescent Shield, and
Ignitor. I wasn't disappointed when the soaring riffs of opener "First
Born" came blaring out of my speakers and instantly increased my heart
rate. In fact, I think my first comment upon hearing this disc was
"Holy crap, these guys SMOKE!" The first band I could think of for
comparison's sake was Sweden's Wolf (with whom Widow share an obvious
love for high-speed, NWOBHM style riffery) but thankfully Widow's
vocals are nowhere near as whiny or annoying as those of Wolf's. Widow
actually employs a pair of vocalists (Chris Bennett provides "Death
Vocals," which fortunately are used sparingly, while John E. Wooten IV
does "Clean Vocals"), a gimmick which brings 3 Inches Of Blood to
mind, but again, Widow's vocal tag-team aren't as grating as 3IOB's.
In short, Widow pisses all over those other two bands. Widow even has
the good taste to cover Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and
Kiss' "I Stole Your Love" at the tail end of this album, so if you can
imagine a mish-mash of those two bands' general over-the-top vibe
mixed with the best of the early Diamond Head, Raven, and Saxon
catalogs, you are somewhere in Widow's neck of the woods. Tracks like
"The Teacher's Pet," "We Will Meet Again" and "Beware The Night" (my
personal faves) all thrash along with joyful abandon and instantly
cemented NIGHTLIFE as essential listening for this jaded old critic.
This CD should have any old-school metalhead making with the devil
horns and head banging along in no time.

Prepare yourself for another round of powerful technical metal when
you crank up Zero Hour's latest offering, the ominously titled DARK
DECEIVER. Those who are familiar with the band's earlier material may
not be surprised by the precision and intensity contained in these
nine tracks, but even diehard fans may find themselves thoroughly
battered by the combination of fierce musicianship and killer
production comprising the album. The first song that really hit me
hard was the title track, just flat out explosive riffs, insidious
basslines, violent drumming and menacing vocals, all delivered with a
high degree of skill. "Resurrection" impresses with emotive vocals and
melodic depth, while Troy Tipton's solo spot "Tendinitis" will have
jaws dropping at his virtuosity. Mike Guy's drumming is stunning all
over DARK DECEIVER, as is the relentless guitar work of Jasun Tipton
and Chris Salinas' soaring vocals; indeed, it's Chris who provides
needed contrast to the often cold, clinical feel of the arrangements,
warming and humanizing pieces such as the excellent "The Passion Of
Words." Zero Hour's music isn't going to appeal to everyone, as the
complexity can get overwhelming at times, but for those with an ear
for tones that bridge the gap between the early prog of Fates Warning
and the modern metal of Meshuggah, I recommend DARK DECEIVER without
hesitation...
