-Sweet Raises Funds For San Diego Fire Victims
Sweet Continues 2008 North American Tour Playing Their Hits: "Ballroom
Blitz," "Fox On The Run," "Love Is Like Oxygen," "Little Willy,"
"Hellraiser," "Teenage Rampage," "Blockbuster" & "Action"
LOS ANGELES, CA -- Premier rock band Sweet led by bassist/vocalist
Steve Priest will continue their "Are You Ready Steve?" North American
tour with a performance in San Diego to help raise awareness and funds
for Rancho Bernardo United Coalition (RBUC) and the benefit "Promoting
Healing Through Music" on Friday, October 24th on the Green at
Qualcomm Stadium. Sweet will be joined by Great White, Dokken and Asia
to benefit the RBUC which is the home of the long term recovery center
(LTRC) for Rancho Bernardo, and is one of six recovery teams whose
mission is to provide and coordinate emotional, physical, financial
and spiritual resources to help rebuild the homes and lives of
families affected by the San Diego Wildfires of October 2007. Doors
open at 5 p.m. General seating is $50-$100, available through
TicketMaster, http://www.ticketmaster.com/ , and at Albertsons in
Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and Escodidos. VIP tickets
packages -- first 10 rows with meet-and-greet opportunities with band
members -- are only available by contacting Love and Roll Productions
at 858-395-3473, http://www.loveandrollproductions.com/ .
In addition to drawing big crowds at shows during their 2008 tour, a
new generation of fans of all ages are learning about Sweet through
various outlets. "Dancing With The Stars" is using "Ballroom Blitz" in
its TV promos. Sweet songs have been featured in numerous movies
including: Kate Hudson's "My Best Friend's Girl" ("Love Is Like
Oxygen"), Mike Meyers' "Wayne's World" ("Blitz"), "Dazed And Confused"
("Fox On The Run"), Adrian Grenier's "Drive Me Crazy" ("Little
Willy"), Joan Collins' "The Stud" ("Oxygen"), "Curse Of The Crimson
Altar" ("Fox"), and "Hot Fuzz" ("Blitz"). Mitsubishi recently used
"Blitz" for a car commercial and the many players of the mass appeal
video game franchises "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" are becoming Sweet
fans due their classic songs being featured in these games.
A sample of the reviews from Sweet's ongoing tour include:
"A blitz may be coming to your local ballroom. Bassist Steve Priest, a
founding member of Sweet, has reconstituted the glittery fuzz-rock
band that ignited U.K. and U.S. charts with such '70s hits as
'Ballroom Blitz,' 'Little Willy,' 'Fox On The Run' and 'Love Is Like
Oxygen.' The 'Are You Ready Steve?' Tour kicks off June 12 at The
Whisky in Hollywood, with guitarist Stuart Smith, singer Joe Retta,
drummer Richie Onori and keyboardist Stevie Stewart... Priest's
reconfiguration plans to revisit all the historic Sweet spots,
including 'Blockbuster,' 'Action,' 'Hellraiser' and 'Teenage
Rampage.'" -- Edna Gundersen, USA Today, May 2, 2008
"Hayes, Middlesex wouldn't be the first town to come to mind in
generating musical/songwriting abilities shown by Steve Priest,
founding member of the group Sweet. But then neither does York
standout as the birthplace for the enormously talented guitarist
Stuart Smith. Now, add a couple of Yanks with the energy and the
professionalism of drummer Richie Onori and Stevie Stewart on
keyboard/organ and get one of the best rock singers in the music
scene, Joe Retta and the Sweet band is back in business." -- Leo and
Karen Sidler, Union Jack, July 2008
"Sweet's Saturday Night two show performance at Morongo Casino was
stunning... Sweet still creates the same old energy and the crowd
loved them." -- Andrew Yelich, Desert Cities, September, 2008
"The party atmosphere is still alive and the band 'absolutely' rocks
out." -- Stephanie Classen, The Star Phoenix (Saskatoon) July 4, 2008
"Brit band the Sweet has reformed for a North American tour; Sweet
epitomized the '70s by fusing bubblegum melodies with crunchy guitars.
They looked like a heavy metal band...the contrast served them well,
racking up an incredible number of hits ... The group began their tour
at The Whisky a Go Go and MC was there to satisfy its sweet tooth." --
Music Connection, July 2008
More concert dates will be announced shortly. Stay tuned to

-Uriah Heep Update
[Note: This is from Mick Box's update at http://www.uriah-heep.com/ .
- Tim]
Hello everyone!
Well we have played 4 shows now and the set list is really beginning
to bed in now. You probably know by now we are not playing it safe and
we are performing the whole of the [WAKE THE SLEEPER] CD plus some of
the classics Heep songs. This is a very brave move but we had to give
it a go as we had been playing the last set for quite some time. It
was time to stand up and be counted.
The set has been very well received so far and the response each night
has been wonderful, very warm and very heartfelt. I am sure the people
who come to the show can see the effort we have made to get this set
of songs as powerful as we can and with a nice balance between the old
and new songs. We have even introduced the original intro to 'Gypsy'
which Is going down a storm each night and sounds super powerful.
We have been getting on very well with Thin Lizzy and these German
shows are a rock night extravaganza for the fans and one they will
never forget. Although we have only been on the road for nearly a week
the dreaded cold germs have began to surface. First to be hit is Phil
and Christos and we can only hope it does not get passed on to
everyone. The set is very demanding and very rewarding at the same
time. I will be interested to read the reviews as they surface. They
certainly cannot deny the fact that we have been brave and not taken
the easy option as some bands do and just play a couple of new songs
amongst the hits and the classics. The backdrop when we can get the
whole thing up looks tremendous and helps give a freshness to how the
stage looks and having merchandising is a real plus too. We even have
a programme which we have not had for at least 20 years.
This is a very exciting phase of our career and there is a genuine
buzz and excitement surrounding us at the moment which is very
uplifting. We look forward to seeing you all out on the road and a big
thanks to all of you that have bought WTS and merchandising so far as
we do appreciate your support.
'Appy Days
Mick on the tour bus from Saarbrucken Nurenburg in Germany
(We have just been pulled over by the police on a routine check stop
and they were all Heep fans so a couple of signed pictures and we are
on our way-how cool is that!)

-Firewind Completes Successful U.K. Headlining Tour; Launches New
Instructional Video
The Greek metal sensation, Firewind, just completed a highly
successful U.K. headlining tour and are now preparing for another
massive European run this November in support of their highly
acclaimed album, THE PREMONITION. Be sure to check out their complete
touring itinerary by clicking http://www.myspace.com/firewind .
Mark Cross (drums) recently recorded an instructional lesson that can
now be viewed on the band's official YouTube page by clicking below.
Stay tuned for new episodes featuring vocal lessons from Apollo, and
additional Gus G. clips, which should be posted over the next couple
of weeks. Also, don't miss out on their new live video for "Head Up
High," shot by aspiring new director Bob Katsionis (Firewind
keyboardist), which can be viewed now on their MySpace page.
Gus G. (guitars) checks in with the following report:
"So, we're back from our U.K. tour! It was a very smooth nine date run
for us and we are very happy with how the whole thing went down. To
start with, we had two killer bands with us: Kiuas and Dear Superstar.
All very nice guys and good live bands. Our crew was top notch and
amazing people. So if the foundation is right, the rest can be a piece
of cake. Right? Well, actually our feelings were mixed. Stressed and
excited. We didn't know what to expect, as this is only the second
time we were headlining in the U.K. and many of these places we
visited for the first time. We didn't know if anyone would turn up for
these gigs. We were in for a surprise.
"All shows were packed with our crazy fans (some sold out) and you
guys have proved that the U.K. has some of the most hardcore Firewind
fans, if not THE most hardcore! If you ask me for highlights, I don't
know what to choose from. Nottingham and Glasgow were insane as
always, Dublin has a special place in our hearts after such a warm
welcome on our debut show, Manchester, Leeds and Wolverhampton were
louder than hell, London was stressful, but beautiful as always and
Milton Keynes and Peterborough were great to wrap it up, even though
we felt we just started getting on fire! Cheers to all of you. I have
a premonition that the European shows will be just as good. See you
all soon."

Headline Act Announcement For Z Rock Plus Newman Join The Cause
We will be announcing the headline act for Z Rock 09 May 30th on
Monday October 13th at 6 p.m. GMT. We are expecting the show to sell
out very quickly as do the few people whom are aware of whom the act
is. ;O) To quote one: "you'll have to run 2/3 nights at least to deal
with demand." This really is a major catch and possibly makes Z Rock
09 the all-day show for melodic rock, AOR and classic rock fans to be
held in Europe since 1991 and that is not said lightly. All will be
revealed 6 p.m. GMT Monday at http://www.zrecords.net/ and
http://www.myspace.com/zrockfest .
Newman Confirmed For May 30th!!!!
Newman are the latest act to be confirmed for Z Rock 09 on May 30th.
The lineup now runs as....
May 29th:
WIG WAM [NO]
May 30th:
BIG NOIZE [UK / US]
VON GROOVE [CA]
EDEN [UK]
NEWMAN [UK]
Tickets are currently availalble at a discounted rate of £25 [29th]
and £42.50 [30th] if purchased at http://www.zrecords.net/ or
http://www.myspace.com/zrockfest before October 30th [11:59pm].
Z Rock 09 Announcement
Dear Friends,
You're receiving this mail due to your support in the past for Z Rock
events or the label.
First the good news, our major act is 100% secured for May 30th 2009,
however the announcement we wanted to make tonight is delayed due to a
holiday in the U.S. Grrrrr. The final paperwork will be with us
tomorrow evening sometime and as soon as it comes in you will know who
the mystery artiste is. ;O)
I will be open and frank, personally I threw the towel in regarding
staging another show after the abuse and personal threats that I
received from some idiots before Z Rock 08, being a single parent I
was not willing to take any further risks. However the response from
those who attended Z Rock 08 and the feedback when I went up on stage
really took me by surprise and I decided to give it one last go. The
act we will announced shortly is my thank you to those who have always
supported our cause. We've had disappointments over the years, but
this year some of the work load has been taken off me meaning I can
concentrate on the areas which are my strength, i.e. acts and gig set
up. The act I've managed to secure is the biggest name to play any
festival of Z Rock's type in the U.K. for 19 years and I am proud of
our achievement. Z Rock 09 will sell out, how quickly is anyone's
guess. If it doesn't then the scene is dead and gone.
Now to the sad part, the few who do know me will confirm that I am a
very private person, I have always kept things to myself despite the
name calling and bitchiness from quarters who either don't know me,
hardly know me or do not know the facts. The guys involved behind the
scenes at Z Rock have encouraged me go public on things. I can confirm
that so called supporters of the scene have continually tried to
unsettle or force withdrawal of acts from the Z Rock shows during
recent years, this time out they are working even harder than before.
It is our intention to make everyone aware as to who these people are
along with proof to support it should matters continue. If we do go
public the melodic rock scene would be frankly turned upside down
therefore it will be a last resort.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you at Z
Rock 09. Z is back keep your eye out for the press release tomorrow.
Best Regards
Mark
John Waite Confirms Z Rock 2009 Appearance
It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce the headline

Waite.
With a career that spans 30 years, John Waite is one of the most
successful Worldwide artistes of the AOR / Melodic rock genre. His
career started with the Babys who found success both in Europe and the
U.S. He then embarked on a highly successful solo career which spawned
the worldwide hit "Missing You" before forming the supergroup Bad
English with Journey's Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon.
Z Rock 2009 will be John Waite's first appearance on European soil for
close onto 23 years; fans will not be disappointed and the wait has
been worthwhile. His set will consist of Bad English material along

without a doubt this is a must attend event for any John Waite fan!

Swedish rockers Badmouth have just released their self-titled debut
album through indie label Romulus X Records.
Forged in the furnace of the European rock scene, Badmouth has
captured the attention of fans around the world, and the eye of
industry pros even before the release of their first album. The guys

Aerosmith, that have been lost in the drone of today's rock music.
Tom, Chris, Randy, Mike and Rick realized that their job didn't end
with writing their music, it had to be recorded and produced by the
right people. Their self-titled debut album was produced at Fortrocks
Studio in California by the renowned producer Paul Sabu. The end
result? An album that hooks rock and roll junkies with an addictive
mix of driving beats, rich vocals and tons of attitude.

-20 Years Of "Headbanger's Ball" (Minus All That Time It Wasn't On The
Air)
Metal lives on! MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball," the longest running show
on the network celebrates its 20th anniversary with a bang. Beginning

with noteworthy interviews, archive footage from the past 20 years, a

"Headbanger's Ball," the hardest show in the world, which airs on

helmed by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame. The "Ball's" first long
term host was Adam Curry who was then replaced by the one and only
Riki Rachtman in 1990. Moving from MTV to its current home on MTV2,
Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed fame took over the reigns and interviewed
some of the sickest metal bands around. Jamey may be gone now, but
keep on the look out constantly for special guests and the freshest
videos on the web and TV. This week includes exclusive content and
footage, killer music, and in-depth interviews. Some of these
interviews include many of heavy metal's best such as Metallica,
Mudvayne, Lamb Of God, Testament, Anthrax and more.
Below are descriptions of the shows that are scheduled to air:
"MTV Essential: Metallica"
Premiere: Monday @ 11 p.m.
This special takes a look at the evolution of Metallica & also catches
up with the band now. New interviews discussing their new album DEATH
MAGNETIC and also about their recent performance at Rock Am Ring

This performance special from Avenged Sevenfold's LIVE IN THE LBC &
DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH DVD features the band's April 10th 2008 hometown
show at the Long Beach Arena headlining the Rockstar Taste Of Chaos
tour.
"Best Of 'Headbanger's Ball' Video Blocks"

metal videos which include the highly anticipated video from Slipknot,
"Dead Memories" and The Sword "How Heavy The Axe."
"Headbanger's Ball Special Anniversary Edition" (2-hour)
Premiere: Saturday @ 10 p.m.
This special is a roundtable discussion with some of "Headbanger's"
most notable VJs such as Riki Rachtman, Dee Snider, and Jamey Jasta.

moments, and their favorite episodes. The show will also take a look

-Exodus Stream Songs From LET THERE BE BLOOD Online; Gary Speaks About
Bonus Track
Exodus have posted two songs from LET THERE BE BLOOD on their MySpace
Web site. "A Lesson In Violence" and "Metal Command" will be streaming
online for a limited time, allowing fans a chance to officially test-
drive the controversial re-recording of the 1985 thrash classic BONDED
BY BLOOD, titled LET THERE BE BLOOD, which hits streets this October
28th.
In addition Gary Holt, founding member and guitarist, has released a
comment on recording "Hell's Breath," a rare track from the band's
1980's demo. "Hell's Breath" will be a bonus track included on the LET
THERE BE BLOOD release: "When Tom and I finished the drum tracks for
LET THERE BE BLOOD, we had a half a day of studio time left, we tried
to come up with something to record with the spare time we had. One
thing led to another, and next thing you know I started playing the
opening riff to 'Hell's Breath,' which is when we both said 'Hell
Yeah!' Funny thing is, neither of us had played the song for two-plus
decades, so we were going by memory on the exact arrangement of the
song. It wasn't until I started deciphering my old lyrics from some
live MP3s that a friend had sent me, that I realized we had gotten the
original solo section wrong! Just slightly different, but overall,
this one came out so killer, almost makes me want to track some more
of those old classics!"
To listen to "A Lesson In Violence" and "Metal Command" go to:
http://www.myspace.com/exodus
Produced by Gary Holt, LET THERE BE BLOOD was recorded at Sharkbite
Studios in Oakland, CA, JKZ Production Studio in San Rafael, CA with
vocal tracks recorded at J. Rod Production Studios in New City, NY.
Andy Sneap mixed and mastered the album at Backstage Studios in
Derbyshire, UK.
The release date for LET THERE BE BLOOD is October 28, 2008 through

-Century Media: COVERING 20 YEARS OF EXTREMES
Each musician has their own definition of having "made it" -- perhaps
having reached a specific sales level, or selling out a certain
renowned venue, or maybe even hearing themselves on the radio -- but
there has to be a certain unique thrill about having one of your songs
covered by another band. Therefore, when Century Media celebrated
their 20th anniversary, the label wanted to find a special release,
one taking a unique approach but still "keeping it in the family," so
to speak. That in mind, they approached some of their current and

Band: Fizgig
Album: OUT LOUD
Genre: Hard Rock/Classic Rock
Release Date: Out Now
Web links: http://www.fizgigband.com/
Fizgig was formed Bellevue, Iowa in 2005 after Mark, Greg, and Dan
jammed together in a Pink Floyd 25th anniversary of THE WALL tribute
band. Fizgig still play a ton of Floyd tunes in their live show.
Fizgig added Steve (a friend of Dan's) and Tim (a friend of Greg's)
later. The band were playing at the Pitstop in Dubuque one night. In
fact it was Halloween night in 2006. Tim Kunkel and a bunch of his
friends came out to see the band. After their set, Tim approached us
and said that the song they had just played could be a Hit Song. Yes,
it was 'Cry'n Out Loud.' Fizgig continue to get the same response from
a lot of people. But Tim Kunkel was serious enough to send the band to
Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, to record their CD OUT LOUD. He
couldn't have picked a better Recording Studio, they work magic with
music. Mark and Dan come up with the basic music and words... basic?
no way!... Greg comes up with the (Wow) Bass licks and some slightly
different arrangements from the first draft. Steve adds some
hellacious drum beats to drive it, and Tim layers in his own unique
guitar rhythms and tries to sneak in a Lead note or two. Getting back
to Mark and Dan, Mark adds some crazy lightning fast lead guitar
solos, where Dan's deep, poetic, Interesting words come from but they
pour out almost fast enough to smoke the tip on the pen. That's the
band's recipe for cooking up a song! Fizgig have enough new music to
produce two more CDs. Fizgig have been performing to packed houses and
if their CD sales of OUT LOUD continue to grow like they are now. You
will see the new CDs soon. It's the fans that are making the band's
dream a lot closer to being Fullfilled.
Fizgig are:
Greg Jess - Bass guitar/lead and harmony vocals
Tim Junk - Guitars/vocals
Dan Manemann - Lead vocals
Steve Klauer - Drums/percussion/vocals
Mark Page - Lead guitar/vocals
PRESS
"Overall a varried and interesting CD that blends just about all
styles of classic melodic hard rock with a little pop and prog edge,
most enjoyable and we look forward to a full CD from Fizgig." -
Fireworks UK
"The band is tight, as in five fingers of a single hand. The mix is
precise, the music is both original and has flavors of great rock
influences like King Crimson, early Doors, and late Peter Gabriel.
Fresh and crisp with meaningful lyrics that don't bludgeon you over
the head with 'Dark and Deep.' If you don't get up and dance to
'Partytown,' 'Take My Hand' or 'You And Me' contact your Physician and
have your medication changed." - iTunes Review
"No matter how you spell it, the Dubuque and Bellevue, Iowa based rock
group Fizgig is giving a new definition to what local bands are
capable of." - Telegraph Herald Dubuque, Iowa, Newspaper

H.A.R.D. were formed in Hungary, by highly acclaimed members of the
local rock scene. There was an existing core of the band, and it
became H.A.R.D. Just after the arrival of the young but well known
singer, Zoltαn Batky-Valentin (Stonehenge, Wendigo, After Crying,
Queen Tribute). The other members also have a strong and long hard
rock background, they have been playing in bands with many awards and
gold discs, such as Edda, Fix, Dance, Sing Sing and the most authentic
European Kiss tribute group, called Kiss Forever Band.
In the same year, the group released their debut album in Hungary,
called TRAVELER. It is basically a compilation from the previous two
albums of the core band, but with completely newly written lyrics,
vocal harmonies and choruses by the new singer. H.A.R.D. launched its
MySpace site very soon, and after only a few days, they have received
an invitation for collaboration from the legendary producer Beau Hill
(Europe, Alice Cooper, Winger, Ratt, Warrant, stb.). The band has re-
recorded a few songs that have been re-mixed by Beau Hill, so there is
a three song promo pack now with an up-to-date sound that meets the
international levels.
In the meantime, the original TRAVELER album has been started to
travel around the world, as more record labels, promoters and
distributors started to sell it around the world, including one of
their flagships, AOR Heaven. Now H.A.R.D. Is working on songs for the
upcoming album, and rehearsing for kick-ass concerts.
H.A.R.D. are:

"This band is an unpolished diamond with potential to reach all the
way into the finest room of our melodic hard rock hearts. I like what
I hear and their sound is so genuine and the guitars are so sharp that
you can cut some solid glass straight through the middle. The vocals
are nothing less then a blessing from the sky -- a true discovery for
the entire world under the category called hard rock voices." - Johnny

-Ex-Hades Members Form One-Night-Only Cover Band
Former Hades members Alan Tecchio, Dan Lorenzo, and Ron Lipnicki (who
is now on drums for Overkill) have teamed up with Fuse TV's "Talking
Metal" duo (John Ostronomy and Mark Strigl) to form Screaming Metal, a
cover band.
Screaming Metal have been jamming songs by Judas Priest, Kiss,
Metallica, Black Sabbath and AC/DC the last few months. "Jamming these
songs has brought back a lot of great memories, and at our age we can
approach this with a more mature perspective," said vocalist Alan
Tecchio. Guitarist Dan Lorenzo said, "I never wanted to be in a cover
band, but I have to admit it's fun as hell to jam songs like, 'Mob
Rules' and 'Walk All Over You' just like I did when I started playing
the clubs in the early '80s." For now Screaming Metal will perform
only one night -- Saturday Feb. 7th at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ.
Openers will include LowBuz who will be performing their last show
ever.
"Talking Metal's" Mark Strigl said, "John and I feel honored to play
with guys who's history helped define the genre. The songs we have
been jamming on are more of the deep cuts, most of these songs will
not be found on the typical cover band's set list. I think this will
make our gigs a real treat for the true hard rock and metal fans."

-ROADRUNNER UNITED: DVD Due In December
What was Roadrunner Records supposed to do after the label corralled
56 musicians from 44 different bands spanning the label's entire 25-
year history to release one groundbreaking album, called ROADRUNNER
UNITED: THE ALL-STAR SESSIONS? Simple. Throw one helluva party!
The label did just that, holding a party complete with an all-star
performance by artists once and currently signed to the label, as well
as friends of the company.
Roadrunner is pleased to announce the release of ROADRUNNER UNITED THE
CONCERT on December 9, 2008. The double-disc set hits shelves almost
three years to the day after the now-legendary concert held at the
Nokia Theater in Times Square in New York City on December 15, 2005.
The concert enjoyed a cult, "You had to be there!" status in the metal
and hard rock scenes and now Roadrunner is giving the label's diehard
followers a chance to witness the event for themselves.
ROADRUNNER UNITED THE CONCERT captures the festive intensity of the
evening. A house band, featuring members of core Roadrunner acts such
as Slipknot, Sepultura and Machine Head, performed hits and classics
culled from the entirety of the Roadrunner catalog. Some of the
highlights included Slipknot/Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor
performing "Bother" with Life Of Agony's Keith Caputo; former
Killswitch Engage singer Jesse Leach dueting with current vocalist
Howard Jones for KsE's "My Last Serenade"; an assortment of front men
handling vocals for staple songs like Slipknot's "(Sic)" and
"Surfacing," Machine Head's "Davidian," King Diamond's "Abigail,"
Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1,"
Soulfly's "Eye For An Eye" as well as four songs from the ROADRUNNER
UNITED: THE ALL-STAR SESSIONS album. The double disc set also includes
a 75-minute documentary, complete with interviews and behind-the-
scenes footage, making it an even more intimate, fan-friendly
experience!
The DVD is essential for those who've followed Roadrunner from its
humble beginnings as a Dutch import label to the powerhouse, gold
standard in hard rock and heavy metal that it has become.

-Skeletonwitch Films New Video
Ohio's Skeletonwitch have completed the filming for the band's debut
video from BEYOND THE PERMAFROST, which saw an October 2007 release
through Prosthetic Records. Combining live footage from Stuart's Opera
House in Nelsonville, Ohio and additional narrative footage from
various locales in southern Ohio from earlier this summer, the b-roll
footage was wrapped in September. Director Brian Wiebe is a friend of
the band and successful graduate of Ohio University's School of Film
in Athens, the unholy birthplace of The Witch.
"Making the video was a killer time!" guitarist Scott "Scunty D."
Hedrick says proudly. "Lots of beer, weapons, and more than 50 pounds
of animal intestines; how could we go wrong? I must admit, however,
that shooting live footage for 10 hours straight wears you out more
than actually playing a real set, resulting in the 'ultimate
bangover.'"
After a handful of recent solo dates and shows with Trap Them, The
Gates Of Slumber, and Khann, to preface the tour, Skeletonwitch begins
the band's involvement in the annual Blackest Of The Black Tour
tonight, which also features headliners Danzig and Dimmu Borgir, along
with Moonspell and Winds Of Plagues in order to continue supporting
BEYOND THE PERMAFROST, the band's second full-length and third release
overall after 2006's WORSHIP THE WITCH EP and 2004's AT ONE WITH THE
SHADOWS, both independent, self-financed releases.

-Eternal Descent's Llexi Leon Secures Faith Guitars Endorsement
Faith brand acoustic guitars well-suited for Eternal Descent's
unconventional material
LONDON, UK -- On the heels of a recent ESP Guitars endorsement,
Eternal Descent's Llexi Leon has officially secured an endorsement
with U.K. based Faith Guitars. Leon, an Incendium Records recording
artist performing goth/industrial/ metal music, found that Faith
Guitars were best suited to acquire atypical tones and effects on his
recordings, and he now endorses the product.
"I'm excited to be involved with a forward thinking company like
Faith," affirms Leon. "My use of acoustic guitars on Eternal Descent
material is quite unconventional, playing with low altered tunings,
staggered delay effects, MIDI triggering, and layered loops.
Thankfully none of this was an issue for Faith! Already we've been
discussing ideas for Baritone scale Acoustic guitars featuring custom
electronics, whilst keeping a darker modern aesthetic that works
within the world of Eternal Descent. Currently, I'm using the mid-
range Eclipse models in my studio as writing tools. They're a pleasure
to pick up and play -- great definition and the overtones ring out for
days!"
Llexi Leon, the mastermind behind the multimedia concept Eternal
Descent, began making noise in London, England in 2005. His highly
intricate guitar style exhibits the many influences corralled to
create his intense sound -- from classical, flamenco, electronica, and
ambient genres to the more prominent genres of rock and metal. All of
these genres infused to one, Leon has created a cinematic fantasia
with a gothic flair, which will soon branch out to a comic book
series.
Leon began playing classical guitar at eight years old and progressed
to electric guitar at 13, the now-22-year-old has continued to broaden
his horizons. Leon has since studied piano, violin, and percussion,
adding diversity to his instrumental performances, whilst continuing
to embrace new guitar techniques.
Leon began incorporating original music with art and writing ideas,
soon realizing he had to bring the concept to life. His main
aspirations are bringing stories to life through escapism, utilizing
everyday events and his vivid imagination to create more avenues for
his multimedia enterprise. To prove its tangibility, Leon has
assembled a team of artists to create the "Eternal Descent" comic book
series with the first issue slated for publication in early 2009. He
also began his own production company, Incendium Records to release
his first concept album LOSING FAITH and the EP THE PHANTOM OF THE
OPERA. This fulfilled his desire to have all Eternal Descent media
developed to the highest standards, under one roof.
Having grown significantly over just a few short years, Incendium is
now working with major names in the music and comic book industries.
In 2009, Eternal Descent plans to expand globally in both areas.
Incendium is already working closely with ESP Guitars on several
exciting projects. Expect to see some custom signature guitars in the
comic books and some headlining recording artists performing on them
throughout the storylines. The possibility of these concepts could
crossover to real life.
Leon was approached by Faith Guitars as an endorsee for their
products, and the two are working on a series of promotional
collaborations, video demonstrations, and custom acoustic instruments
for future Eternal Descent recordings.
Orange Amplifiers has also been an extremely supportive collaborator.
The have been creating and developing anything Leon requires for the
upcoming studio album, including an amplifier that doesn't look like
your typical Orange amp, but still has the trademark tones associated
with the brand. Orange-inspired designs will also be featured in the
comic book on backline and an occasional wall of cabinets.
With these powerful collaborators and Leon's creativity combined, the
Eternal Descent comic books and album releases are sure to explode
worldwide, making Incendium a premier multimedia conglomerate.

"Straight out of Hostile City, U.S.A. (a.k.a. Philadelphia) American
Speedway pound, bash and puke through marriage-ruining a**hole-anthems
like 'Drink' And Drivin'' and 'No Control' like the Supersuckers on
their first day back from a 90-day stint in the county jail"
-- Sleazegrinder, CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE
"Confident and assertive without hitting the point of cockiness, every
second of SHIP OF FOOLS asserts that while we are no longer in the
fine company of acts such as the New Bomb Turks or Gaza Strippers, the
world of punk rock'n'roll is alive again. American Speedway have
revived the corpse.'"
-- Keith Carman, EXCLAIM!
American Speedway formed in the beginning of February 2007. They
earned their mark as powerful local live rock and roll band that can
move a tough crowd, easily make new drinking buddies, and make club
owners happy. They began to play shows with legendary acts such as
Murphy's Law, Electric Frankenstein, Scott H. Biram, Joe Buck (Hank
III), and Wednesday 13 and soon found shows outside of the Philly
area: N.Y.C., Cleveland, Boston, Baltimore, D.C., etc.
American Speedway's main philosophy is real simple: play what THEY
like... that's "real" rock and roll. They're not out to reinvent the
wheel, earn scene points, win musician competitions, or be the next
biggest thing. Their hit single "One Foot In, One Foot Out" remained
in Top 10 Most Songs Played on Sirius Radio's weekly charts, channel
29, for 5 months. Through radio airplay, constant touring, and great
press, American Speedway have graduated amongst the earlier believers,
etc....

-My kid's been on a "Scooby Doo" kick lately -- the cartoon shows and
movies, mind you, not the silly live-action stuff -- and we've been
going overboard TiVo'ing stuff and making DVDs for the video library.
(My kid now has more DVDs than me, I think.) One random show my wife
recorded was a 2003 episode of "What's New Scooby-Doo?" entitled "A
Scooby-Doo Halloween," featuring none other than... Kiss. Yep, the
Mystery, Inc. gang ends up at a Kiss concert where the band performs
"Shout It Out Loud." Paul Stanley even has a few lines of dialogue,
and at the end Shaggy lifts up his mop of hair to reveal a "KISS"
tattoo on his forehead. Pretty funny stuff, and I had no idea this
existed. At least one more repeat is scheduled for October 26 -- check
it out.
Also on the Kiss front, my friend Bill sent me a link to a write-up on
the upcoming Kiss Mr. Potato Head toys. The article is pretty funny
(title: "Kiss' Mr. Potato Head Line Was Made For Spudding You, Baby")
and includes artist renderings of the toys as well as photos of the
prototypes:

-Online reports indicate a new VH1 Classic series called "That Metal
Show" will debut November 15. Described as a cross between
"Headbanger's Ball" and "The Man Show," it will feature metal stalwart
Eddie Trunk plus comedians Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson hosting
metal luminaries for a "roundtable discussion" in front of a live
studio audience. The first slate of guests includes Ace Frehley, Alex
Lifeson, and Geddy Lee. This sounds very cool, but I wasn't clear
about whether those three would all be on together, or on separate
episodes. I just can't imagine a conversation between Ace and the
cerebral Rush fellows. :)
-And speaking of my kid, a few nights ago all of us were driving
around the neighborhood looking at Halloween decorations. I put on Van
Helsing's Curse - OCULUS INFERNUM (2003) for some "spooky music" to
set the atmosphere. After about three songs my wife had had enough and
asked me to turn it off, but we heard a little voice from the back
seat: "Daddy, please turn the spooky music back on." Guess who won
out? :) Later that night I pulled out some Helloween CDs so we could
look at the cool pumpkin artwork together. Ah, fatherhood.
-In my current playlist: Gamma Ray - HELL YEAH!!! - THE AWESOME
FOURSOME (SPV/Steamhammer), Van Helsing's Curse - OCULUS INFERNUM
(KOCH Records), Battleroar - TO DEATH AND BEYOND... (Cruz Del Sur
Music), Artas - THE HEALING (Napalm Records).

BENEDICTUM - SEASONS OF TRAGEDY (A-/B+) Locomotive Records, 2008

Benedictum's excellent 2006 debut UNCREATION was one of those
unexpected surprises, revealing an explosively tight band with a
captivating and powerful singer in Veronica Freeman; just a quick two
years later and Benedictum are back with another scorcher, the
hopefully not apocalyptically titled SEASONS OF TRAGEDY. Those who
enjoyed UNCREATION will find more of that style to love here, with
Veronica's distinctive vocal melodies, guitarist Pete Wells'
aggressive riffs and kinetic solos, Jesse Wright's solid bass and Paul
Courtois' intense drumming firing up metal anthems like "Shell Shock,"
"Burn It Out," "Within The Solace," and "Beast In The Field." Some
notable guest appearances add to the cool factor, including turns by
George Lynch, Manni Schmidt (Grave Digger), Jeff Pilson and even Craig
Goldy showing up on the European version which includes a cover of
Rainbow's "Catch The Rainbow." Benedictum obviously enjoy paying
tribute to their influences, as UNCREATION had interpretations of
Black Sabbath's "Heaven And Hell" and "The Mob Rules," and on SEASONS
OF TRAGEDY they include their take on the Accept classic "Balls To The
Wall." The aforementioned Jeff Pilson produced and recorded the album,
and it's a bit more polished than UNCREATION, which may or may not be
to your liking depending on how raw you like your metal. One thing is
certain, however -- SEASONS OF TRAGEDY is a potent blend of
traditional American and European melodic power metal that begs to be
unleashed live, something I hope I am able to witness soon!

DEVIL'S SLINGSHOT - CLINOPHOBIA (A-) Mascot Records U.S.A., 2008

Certified virtuosos Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan and Virgil Donati
assemble for CLINOPHOBIA, the debut release from their side project
Devil's Slingshot. CLINOPHOBIA is filled to the brim with the kind of
crisp, tight, well-produced fusion these guys are all known for,
including modern hypnotic rhythms, otherworldly guitar solos, odd-time
percussion, and impossible basslines. You can hear elements of Tony's
melodic style on tracks such as "Ballade De Bastille" and "Def Bitch
Blues," while the crazy time of "Injustice Line," and the heavy fusion
of "Flamed" reflect Virgil's writing style. A nice atmospheric blend
is found on "Hourglass," a track co-written by Tony and Virgil and
interestingly enough, featuring Bunny Brunel on bass. Closer "Aerial
Perspective" sums up the Devil's Slingshot style nicely, with refined
driving rhythms and killer guitar work from Tony. Truth be told,
CLINOPHOBIA is kind of Planet X-lite, with an emphasis on more
economical arrangements minus the busy keyboard playing. The guys do a
great job of displaying fantastic musicianship while avoiding the urge
to go overboard, effectively leaving the listener wanting more. Those
who are already fans of these masters will certainly want to add this
one to their collection, but CLINOPHOBIA may also end up reaching the
ears of many who are not yet converted to the sometimes abstruse
sounds of fusion...

SERENITY - FALLEN SANCTUARY (B+) Napalm Records, 2008

This album really took me by surprise. I had previously heard
Serenity's second album, WORDS UNTOLD & DREAMS UNLIVED and it did
nothing for me. Maybe it was the mood I was in or something else but
the music just seemed disconnected and not very fluid. So I was
pleasantly surprised when I saw the video for "Velatum" on YouTube.
Actually I was blown away at how awesome the vocals were, the
incredible production and the memorable melody I sang over and over in
my head after hearing it. Much to my surprise, after hearing the
entire album, "Velatum" is one of the weaker songs on the album
compared to the rest of the material -- now that is saying something.
Georg Neuhauser has an incredible voice with a soaring range and
smooth delivery; his melodies are both memorable and haunting. He is
definitely the star of the show here. On the front of the CD I have
there is a sticker that says "Symphonic Metal, A must have for fans of
Kamelot." While I agree with the Symphonic Metal description and I
won't argue that fans of Kamelot may like this, I really don't see all
that much that is similar. Serenity has more progressive elements in
their music than Kamelot. With that said, it's surprising that there
is only one song on this album over the six minute mark and more than
half of the songs are under five minutes. Serenity pack so much into
each song that the songs themselves seem much longer than they are. I
am still discovering new things I like with each repeated listen and
that's after 10+ spins. One shining aspect that keeps things
refreshing is the incredible contribution of keyboard player Mario
Hirzinger. His sense of melody and arrangements are emotional and well
placed. He never takes away from the song but always seems to add the
right texture and sounds in a perfect way, and his transitions are
flawless. I haven't enjoyed a keyboard player this much since Gunter
Werno of Vanden Plas and coming from me that is saying a lot because I
hold Gunter in a very elite category. There is so much depth in each
of these songs that if I gave a description of each of them I would
just end up repeating my self. As mentioned earlier, Georg Neuhauser's
lead vocals are clear and up front with a stellar delivery, and
beautiful lush background vocals are heard in the majority of the
choruses. The production is top-notch with some very nice orchestrated
parts that add to the structure of the song and never are
overindulgent. There is a great mix of up-tempo and mid tempo songs On
FALLEN SANCTUARY and even a ballad, "Fairytales." My only negative
would be that the lead guitar is a little to far back in the mix at
times when it should be out front during solos and key spots. Also,
there is not a lot of lead guitar work on the album overall; this
isn't necessarily a negative, though, because it doesn't impact the
song quality -- the songs are strong enough on their own that a great
lead isn't necessary. But in my opinion some more would have been
nice. Overall this is an exceptional release and anyone into beautiful
vocals surrounded by great musical arrangements performed with
fabulous musicianship and awesome production should pick this up!
