-Ratt And The Donnas Invade Your Holiday
LOS ANGELES -- The original hard rock hitmakers Ratt return to
celebrate the holidays with a very special "Invasion Of Your Holiday"
run of dates this month. In honor of their Southern California roots,
the band is embarking on a 4-show mini-tour to invade your holiday.
Two shows, the House Of Blues in Los Angeles and the House Of Blues in
Anaheim, feature Ratt performing with The Donnas. The Donnas
frontwoman Brett Anderson commented, "We're so excited to play with
Ratt at the House Of Blues. We've been Ratt fans forever, and we'd be
at the show anyway so we might as well play right?!" Ratt recently
announced the addition of famed guitar hero Carlos Cavazo, best known
for his multiplatinum work in Quiet Riot. The band will continue to
tour into the New Year and also release a brand-new studio album,
their first since 1999's self-titled RATT.
For more information or to purchase tickets, please see the band's Web
sites at http://www.TheRattPack.com/ and
http://www.MySpace.com/TheRattPack .
Ratt's VIDEOS FROM THE CELLAR: THE ATLANTIC YEARS DVD and TELL THE
WORLD: THE VERY BEST OF RATT CD were released last year and are
available now at all retail outlets and at http://www.rhino.com/ for
suggested list prices of $14.99 for the DVD and $18.98 for the CD,
respectively.
ABOUT RATT
Before selling more than 16 million albums worldwide and establishing
itself as one of the '80s most popular groups, Ratt perfected its
trademark mix of guitar heroics, anthemic hooks and hedonistic
attitude playing the clubs along Los Angeles' famed Sunset Strip. The
band singed with Atlantic Records releasing its debut in 1984. OUT OF
THE CELLAR sold more than three million copies and rocketed into
Billboard's Top 10 on the strength of its first single, "Round And
Round." Peaking at #12 on Billboard's Singles chart, the track was the
first in a long line of hit songs and videos that made Ratt a fixture
on the radio and MTV as well as a major live act playing to sold-out
crowds across the nation.
Ratt's uninterrupted streak of platinum records continued a year later
with INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY, its second Top 10 album, followed by
1986's DANCING UNDERCOVER and 1988's REACH FOR THE SKY. After scoring
nine Top 40 Album Rock tracks and two Top 40 hits in the '80s, the
band started a new decade with the 1990 release of DETONATOR, the
band's fifth album and a certified-gold hit.

-SPV Newsletter
With 2008 coming to a close, we wanted to bring you all up to speed
with what's going on in the SPV/InsideOut world. Along with the usual
band and tour updates, we also want you to be among the first to hear
about two really cool contests going on. We wish you all very happy
holidays, and want to thank you for all the support in 2008! You'll be
seeing much more from SPV and our bands in the New Year!
Battle Of The Bands - SPV/InsideOut Fan Appreciation Contest
Step 1: Pick your favorite SPV/InsideOut band to support
Step 2: Create a tribute to the band (video, art, dance, song, etc.)
Step 3: E-mail or mail your tribute to SPV with your contact info
If you are one of the 100 winners, you will receive a prize pack from
your selected band in the mail. Top winners get top prizes! More
details at http://www.myspace.com/spvusa .
1. Pick a band from the following list: Skinny Puppy, Whitesnake, Type
O Negative, Motorhead, Iced Earth, Symphony X, Kamelot, Monster
Magnet, UFO, Evergrey, or misc. InsideOut bands (including Kings X,
Ayreon, Tangent, etc.).
2. Create a tribute to the band that you chose. This is very open
ended, and we encourage participants to be creative, humorous, and
think outside the box. Some examples are creating a video, writing an
essay about what the band means to you, creating a piece of art,
inventing a dance, writing a song, drawing a picture, etc. Please be
responsible -- do not harm any living beings or property, and do not
do anything illegal.
3. You can e-mail your submission (which can include a link, file to
download, or embed in e-mail) to SPVContest@.... If you need to
physically send your submission please send it to: SPV America, 68
White St. #287, Red Bank NJ 07701. You MUST include your full name, e-
mail address, phone number, and mailing address.
The deadline is March 1, 2009, and this contest is open only to
residents of North America. It is important to note that your
submission will not be returned, and that not everyone that submits an
entry will receive a prize. Prizes will be sent to winners once they
have been judged, and will not necessarily be announced publicly. Only
one submission will be accepted per person. If several people work on
one tribute, only one prize pack will be sent to winner.
How the winners are selected:
It's simple: the employees of SPV will pick their favorite
submissions. Decisions will be based on creativity and effort.
How the prize packs are determined:
Each band has different kinds and quantities of prizes. The
submissions for each band will be judged separately, and all submitted
tributes will be ranked from best to worst. The prizes will be
rewarded based on this ranking, as there are different levels of prize
packs. For example, Type O Negative Prize Packs are as follows:
Top 50 winners receive two license plate frames, magnets, stickers,
promo CD or video, and Autographed poster. The top 10 winners will
also receive a T-shirt. Top two winners receive all prizes mentioned,
plus a 3-disc vinyl box set with T-shirt.
The fine print: All material submitted to SPV, both online and via
snail mail become property of SPV to use and distribute in any way,
place, or form for eternity. Tributes will not be returned. SPV is not
responsible for any damage, liability, or finances associated with the
creation of the tribute. To continue reading the fine print, please go

Riff King Contest
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DoXEiv5FtqRY&id=preview
Saxon is searching for the musician who contributes the best solo for
the current Saxon single "Live To Rock" (from the new album, INTO THE
LABYRINTH, out in January 2009).
What do you have to do? That's simple enough: by clicking the link,
you will be able to hear "Live To Rock," and all you have to do is
play your own solo to fill in the part where the song is faded out.
Record your contribution by webcam or video camera and submit it to
the Riff King channel. All entries will be judged by a panel.
If you win, you will get to play live with Saxon in Brazil, Japan or
Germany, whichever you prefer. All expenses paid, and you'll be
treated like a full Saxon member on this unique day, appearing on
stage with your heroes that night! Along with the main prize, there
will be other excellent prizes, among them an exclusive Saxon Dean
Flying V guitar.
This competition ends on the 28th of February 2009! So hurry up and be
the next Riff King!
Band Updates
Kreator
The HORDES OF CHAOS will soon be unleashed! The massive new album from
the thrash metal originals hits the streets on January 13. After the
band finishes a cross-Europe trek in early 2009, they'll be hitting
the road in North America with the mighty Exodus in April for what is
destined to be one of the most memorable metal events of the coming
year! http://www.kreator-terrorzone.de/
Motörhead
The metal icons are wrapping up their European tour along with the end
of the year -- and what a year it's been for them. With the summer
release of MOTORIZER, Lemmy, Phil, and Mikkey found themselves sitting
on the Billboard Top 100, with one of their best records to date.
Along with the release has come an enormous amount of press, including
a multi-page feature in Inked Magazine (on stands through Jan. '09), a
feature in Guitar Player Magazine, and countless others. Even the vast
musical accomplishments aside, Motorhead has had film and television
undertakings in 2008 as well. Motorhead's song "Dog-Face Boy" can be
heard in Disney's new movie "Bolt," and Lemmy made a special
appearance getting his tattoos touched up by Kat Von D for TLC's "L.A.
Ink" (air date TBD). With a 30+ year history, there is no question
after a year like this that the band only gets better as the years
progress. More news at http://www.imotorhead.com/ .
Sepultura
To all the Sepultura fans that have been patiently waiting for a new
release since 2006 -- the wait is almost over. Sepultura have created
a "Clockwork Orange"-inspired masterpiece called A-LEX, being released
in the U.S. on January 27, 2009. In the meantime, you can hear a sneak
peak on Sepultura's MySpace page, SPV's MySpace page, and "Liquid
Metal" on Sirius Radio. The wait will be well worth it, as the CD will
be accompanied by U.S. and European tours, as well as a video for
"We've Lost You! http://www.sepultura.com/ ,
http://www.myspace.com/sepultura
OhGr
Coming towards the end of his U.S. tour, OhGr has had a big year in
more ways than one. With the release of his latest record DEVILS IN MY
DETAILS on November 4, he continues to foster his musical ambitions,
while also incorporating another side of creativity. As of November 7,
"Repo! The Genetic Opera" -- a "Rocky Horror" meets "Blade Runner"
film that critics are hailing "an instant cult classic" -- has hit the
big screen. Alongside Ogre, the musical stars Paul Sorvino, Sarah
Brightman, Alexa Vega, Paris Hilton, Anthony Stewart Head, Bill
Moseley, and Terrance Zdunich. If you haven't picked up DEVILS IN MY
DETAILS or experienced a live OhGr show yet, hurry. For more details
about the record, visit http://www.devilsinmydetails.com/ , and for
info about his new film, visit http://www.Repo-Opera.com/ .

-Tragic/Triumphant Story Of Guitarist Tommy Bolin Told In New Book,
"Touched By Magic"
To many, Tommy Bolin was the legitimate heir to Jimi Hendrix's rock
guitar throne. Stints with the James Gang and Deep Purple -- as well
as solo albums and a groundbreaking release with jazz-rocker Billy
Cobham -- certainly proved that the adulation was rightly deserved.
And with a techno-color fashion sense, he certainly stood out from the
pack. Only one problem, Tommy had a death-defying drug addiction,
which ultimately would lead to a premature and tragic end -- before he
was able to truly take his standing among the elite musicians of the
world. "Touched By Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story" is the first book to
focus entirely on the life story of Tommy Bolin -- compiled from
nearly 50 exclusive interviews (including family, friends, and band
members that played alongside Tommy throughout the years), and
featuring many never-before-seen photos.
"Touched By Magic" is available through http://www.lulu.com/ for
$19.98 (U.S.), and there is a sample chapter to read at the site (the
chapter is titled "Moxy/'Teaser'/Deep Purple"). The book was written
by journalist Greg Prato, whose work has appeared in a variety of
sites and magazines, including All Music Guide, Billboard.com,
RollingStone.com, Record Collector Magazine, and Classic Rock
Magazine, among others. A long-time fan of Tommy's music, Greg
conducted interviews with such renowned rock names as David Coverdale,
Glenn Hughes, Eddie Kramer, Carmine Appice, Jan Hammer, Martin Barre,
Jimmy Haslip, Mark Stein, Prairie Prince, Dale Peters, Jim Fox,
Alphonse Mouzon, Kenny Passarelli, Henry Paul, Narada Michael Walden,
Reggie McBride, and Otis Taylor, as well as Tommy's brother, Johnnie
Bolin (among countless others), for the book.
While it will obviously appeal to fans of Tommy Bolin, this 252-page
paperback book (whose title comes from a phrase that keyboardist Jan
Hammer once said to describe Tommy's guitar playing) will also be of
interest to fans of classic rock in general, as large portions of the
book focus on Deep Purple, the James Gang, and Billy Cobham, while
you'll find additional stories that involve Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck,
Jethro Tull, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the Tubes, Moxy, the Outlaws,
and Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios, among others. You'll also
get the inside scoop on such classic Tommy-related releases as Billy
Cobham's SPECTRUM, the James Gang's BANG and MIAMI, and Deep Purple's
COME TASTE THE BAND, plus Tommy's two cult classic solo albums, TEASER
and PRIVATE EYES. Additionally, new information is gathered around the
events that led to Tommy's tragic passing in 1976, after a show in
Miami with Jeff Beck.
Tommy's following continues to grow each year, as his album PRIVATE
EYES was recently certified gold in the U.S. (500,000 units sold),
Dean Guitars recently unveiled a Tommy Bolin TEASER tribute guitar,
while Hartman Electronics recently premiered a new Tommy Bolin fuzz
pedal. And with the release of "Touched By Magic," the buzz is only
going to grow louder about the great Tommy Bolin. "After reading
'Touched By Magic,' it seemed to me every interview 'takes you there'
for the moment...I give 105 stars to Greg!" -Johnnie Bolin, Tommy's
brother

-Lion Music Update
Upcoming Release: George Bellas - STEP INTO THE FUTURE
Released January 23rd 2008
LMC255
EAN6419922002551
The ever prolific George Bellas is back, less than a year on from his
previous solo album PLANETARY ALIGNMENT with his boldest and most
progressive body of work to date in STEP INTO THE FUTURE. The name
George Bellas is synonymous with stretching musical boundaries and
human imagination with his musical compositions. This new album is
ultra-modern in style and really reaches out to a futuristic sound in
its compositional sense and outlook. The album ranges from the
explosive to the ethereal with emotionally stirring segments. Adding
to its uniqueness STEP INTO THE FUTURE consists of just one song that
is 76 minutes in length.
George's goal on STEP INTO THE FUTURE was to compose ultra-modern
sounding music that used composition techniques that he had not
previously used on any of his other releases. George comments, "I did
not initially plan to write a 76 minute song, it just came out that
way. I just kept writing and writing and as more ideas came to me, I
eventually realized that this was turning into a behemoth of a song.
The album was not a bunch of separate tracks that were merged together
after the fact, but it was indeed written as one long continuous
piece. There are several factors that differentiate STEP INTO THE
FUTURE from my previous releases, one of which is that this album
contains only one song that is 76 minutes long. Other significant
factors are the compositional techniques that I employed. Although I
am known to compose very complex, progressive music, I did not want to
use the same elements found on my previous releases. So, all fresh
scales, meters and chords were written specifically for this album. I
was very much inspired by advanced compositional techniques such as:
Interval Sets, Twelve Tone Serialism, Poly-Meters, Poly-Chords,
Quartal and Quintal Harmony to name a few. I was also inspired to have
a bunch of very melodic guitar playing with very lyrical themes that
at times had a melancholy feel to them. To put it simply, I was
imaginatively inspired with what the future may hold. I would also say
that STEP INTO THE FUTURE is the most dynamic album I have released so
far. This album was not written as a showcase for guitar solos, it is
composition in the truest and finest sense there is. I really strived
for something that captivated my senses with ultra imaginative, highly
unique, creative writing."
Backed once again by the ultra impressive drum work of Marco Minnemann
of whom Bellas proudly states, "Marco Minnemann did an incredible job
on this album. I sent him some very complex rhythm scores and he
plowed right through them recording nothing short of awe inspiring
drum performances. I truly consider Marco Minnemann to be one of the
best drummers that has ever lived. It was a honour to have a musician
of such high calibre contribute to STEP INTO THE FUTURE."
Whilst this maybe perceived as specialist stuff, STEP INTO THE FUTURE
has enough variation to take the listener on a journey through
unchartered musical territories and will reward those bold enough to
take on the challenge.

Upcoming Release: Miosis - ALBEDO ADAPTATION
Released January 23rd 2009
LMC254
EAN6419922002544
Miosis are a dark progressive rock/metal band hailing from Gothenburg,
Sweden who have been gaining a strong reputation with live music fans
in Sweden along with a more international following due to very
positive reviews of a self released EP. With their debut release
ALBEDO ADAPTATION, Miosis offer seven tracks of music that is both
modern and classic at the same time.
Miosis plays a dark and dynamic brand of prog rock/metal with a sound
that draws parallels to the likes of Tool and Isis but with its own
edge and personality. Whilst many progressive bands aim is to dazzle
all listeners with amazing virtuoso musicianship, Miosis do so in more
subtle measures, preferring to build songs around a correlation
between the instruments and vocals making their musical journey more
of a voyage through a sonic spectrum. The music of Miosis is all about
creating moods for the somewhat depressive and often self-reflecting
poetry of the lyrics, it is about finding a way to create images of
the darker corners of the soul, in minds and hearts that are explored,
contemplated upon and poured out in interesting, tasteful musical
arrangements.
The writing for ALBEDO ADAPTATION was the process of several years
where "Red" is the newest composition and "Once Divine" being the
oldest. The recordings took place in September 2007 at Belly of the
whale studio, Gothenburg.
Band Bio:
Miosis was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden in the late summer of 2005.
The band had the vision to create music that was both emotional and
complex. All the members were fans of melancholic bands like Radiohead
and Massive Attack, but also fans of heavy and progressive bands like
Tool, Mars Volta and Isis. With the poetry of drummer Mattias Axelsson
they started to create music and found their own sound early in the
process. In 2007 the band released the self produced EP KONVOLUT which
was spread around the world and several fanzines gave it top reviews.
Soon after the release of KONVOLUT, the band decided to start working
on a full length album.
Track Listing:

Lion Music Artist News
Just a couple of news items for you today.
Jennifer Batten Draws Critical Praise
Jennifer Batten played at the recent Les Paul Music Masters Tribute at
the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame to great reviews.
Ohio.com/Beacon Journal Malcolm X Abram:
"The evening's showstopper was provided by former Michael Jackson/Jeff
Beck cohort Jennifer Batten, who performed an amazing and technically
dazzling solo arrangement of 'Lover'; she recalled Paul's early
multitracking techniques by providing her own beats, rhythm and
harmony parts and leads, all presumably done with digital effects."
Cleveland Plaine Dealer:
"Of course, in the right hands, the guitar itself can sing, as
Jennifer Batten (a veteran of Michael Jackson's and Jeff Beck's bands)
demonstrated with a dazzling re-creation of Paul's hit 'Lover.'"
RollingStone.com
"Paul capped the three-and-a-half hour tribute by accepting an
American Music Masters award statue and playing a set with the Les
Paul Trio, which backed him for a tear-jerking rendition of 'Somewhere
Over the Rainbow.' The marathon concert kicked off with renditions of
Paul's material, including a lighter-than-air 'Lover (When You're Near
Me)' by Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson, Jeff Beck)."

John Macaluso Opens New Music School On Long Island
Drummer John Macaluso (of ARK, Yngwie Malmsteen, TNT, James LaBrie (of
Dream Theater), Union Radio, Riot, Powermad, Delmar Brown (of Sting),
George Lynch, and Starbreaker) has returned to his hometown of
Commack, NY to open a new music instruction school, where he hopes to
share his legacy with aspiring drummers. The Music Lab, located on
Commack Road just south of Jericho Turnpike, will open in December of
2008 with a wealth of offerings that appeal to all musicians,
including private drum, guitar, bass, vocal, and keyboard lessons,
rhythm and reading programs for young students, drum circles, group
jams, rehearsal space, musician's referrals, and master
classes/clinics with special guests.
The school's goal is to strike a unique chord with aspiring musicians
by capitalizing on the experience of seasoned music industry
professionals who have a solid touring and recording background.
Macaluso explains, "The lessons are individually designed by a
teaching staff who is highly experienced with both their instrument
AND the music business. We realize that although some people take up
playing simply to engage in a relaxing hobby, most students have the
end goal of actually performing in front of an audience or recording
in the studio. We're the only music school on Long Island that can
help students with that, in addition to music theory and technique."
The lineup of instructors features Randy Coven (bass), Mike DiMeo
(vocals), Tommy Hellbent (guitar), Larry Meyer (guitar), Ray West
(vocals), Krissy Macaluso (rhythm for kids) and of course, John
Macaluso (drums), whose combined playing/recording credits read like a
who's who list of the music industry.
The Music Lab plans to bolster Long Island's music community by
hosting group events, such as jams organized by experience level and
weekly drum circles. According to Macaluso, these events are intended
to be a fun and valuable way to network, but they're also inspired by
interesting research that shows the benefits group drumming & music-
playing can have on health and well-being. For younger age groups,
there's the Rhythm Safari program: A twelve-week course that teaches
children the basics of reading, rhythm, and group performance in a
drum circle-like setting.
The Music Lab also intends to expand its reach by offering online
lessons via webcam to anyone who has an instrument and an internet
connection.
Those interested in any of the services offered by The Music Lab are
encouraged to visit their Web site at

-Lion's Share To Film "Judas Must Die" Video
Swedish melodic heavy metal masters Lion's Share will film a video for
the song "Judas Must Die" in Stockholm, Sweden with director Josef
Doukkali. Lion's Share previously worked with Doukkali on the clip for
the track "The Edge Of The Razor," from the EMOTIONAL COMA album. The
band's original decision to work with Doukkali was based in part on
the fact that his background was not in music video but in narrative
film projects, and that his more cinematic approach would give the
video a unique look and feel.
"Judas Must Die" comes off Lion's Share's sixth album, DARK HOURS,
which is scheduled for release in March, 2009 via Blistering Records.
The CD was mixed and mastered at Fascination Street in Örebro, Sweden
by Jens Bogren, who has previously worked with Opeth, Symphony X,
Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth, etc. The new album features a guest
appearance by Michael Romeo of Symphony X.
The band states, "The new songs are simply awesome and everybody that
have heard it, think it's our best album to date. The red thread lyric
wise on this album is that all songs are about things that happened in
the late Sixties; a decade known for many good things. However, we're
not describing the happy times of the '60s: We give you the Dark
Hours. Musically it's more straightforward and faster than ever. The
songs are filled with energy and great hooks."

-Les Claypool Makes History On New Year's Eve: First Ever Rock Show @
The War Memorial Opera House In San Francisco
Co-Headlining is Dweezil Zappa performing Zappa Plays Zappa; Opening
Is Critically Acclaimed Singer/Songwriter Tim Fite
HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Les Claypool, infamous bassist and mastermind of the
legendary band Primus will add yet another feather of creative genius
to his hat. As a showman of colossal proportion, Claypool has created
a visual and aural extravaganza in 3-D of the unexpected for his debut
at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. This is the first
ever rock show to take place at the War Memorial Opera House home to
housing the opera and ballet.
The Opera House is one of the most beautiful venues in Northern
California, and this is the first ever rock concert there. The box
seats, usually reserved for ballet or opera season ticket holders,
offer a unique viewing experience for groups of 8, including a private
vestibule, waitress service and souvenir poster.
Les Claypool rose to fame in the early '90s as leader of the multi
platinum alt rock band Primus. Taking his funk derived mastery of the
electric bass and witty story songs, he dove into the jamband scene in
2000. Primus headlined their annual New Year's Eve Freak Out in the
Bay Area from 1992-99, and Claypool has continued the tradition in the
Bay Area ever since. His midnight climaxes are legendary and always
over the top. Thematically manifesting everything from a band of cave
men circa "Quest For Fire" to a parade of costumed freaks, Claypool
takes great pride in his New Year's Eve performances and extras. This
year's show will present unparalleled 3-D visuals, with 3-D glasses
included in the ticket as well as other interesting antics that only
Claypool himself could derive.
Zappa Plays Zappa has received rave reviews for the last few years, as
Dweezil has carried on his father's legacy. The music of Frank Zappa
couldn't be in better hands than the high level of musicianship
collected in this group which includes some alumni from the original
band (Ray White, also of KVHW).
This show marks the first ever appearance of a Zappa on the same bill
with Claypool. He and Primus have often been compared to Frank, and
Primus guitarist Larry LaLonde was recruited by Rykodisc several years
ago to compile a Zappa Picks compilation of his favorites from Frank's
catalogue.
Les Claypool with Zappa Plays Zappa & Tim Fite
New Year's Eve - December 31, 2008 at 8 p.m.

Ticket prices will range from $69 - $125

-Submission Signs Worldwide Deal With Blistering Records
Danish melodic death/thrash band Submission, have signed a worldwide
deal with Blistering Records.
The band's second album "Code Of Conspiracy" will be released by
Blistering Records in early 2009.
CODE OF CONSPIRACY is "a grand tour de force in highly technical, yet
still melodic and aggressive death/thrash played by highly skilled and
ass kicking musicians -- it's clear that Submission holds no fear
towards colleagues such as Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Soiwork or
Textures whatsoever!"
Submission's new album marks the debut of new singer Lasse Sivertsen,
who replaced Steven Qvist, the man behind the microphone on the band's
debut album, FAILURE TO PERFECTION (Listenable Records, 2006).
Commented drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen: "I believe Submission has its
own trademark. Our song structures are not common and there is a huge
variety within our songs. The music is kind of technical but still
with hit potential. Also, we have a range from very groovy and melodic
parts to fast blast beats. In metal 'more is more' and I think
Submission climbs that demand without losing perspective."
Tentative track listing is:
"111008666700"
"Rebel Of Society"
"Imaginary Freedom"
"A Terror Within"
"In The Eyes Of The Tyranny"
"An Illusion Of The Perfect Forever"

-Sepultura... A-LEX Is Upon Us
Sepultura from Brazil are a prime example of an intelligent thrash
metal act whose powerful compositions continue to tackle exciting and
ingenious subjects. 1996 saw the band devote their landmark release,
ROOTS, to the fate of the Xavante Indians on the border of Brazil and
Bolivia; in spring 2006 the musicians put to music an opus by the
Italian poet and philosopher, Dante Alighieri, on their album, DANTE
XXI. Now this concept has reached a new climax: on their latest
release, A-LEX, guitarist Andreas Kisser and his three colleagues,
Derrick Green (vocals), Paulo Jr. (bass) and new addition Jean
Dollabella (drums), have dedicated themselves to Anthony Burgess's
book "A Clockwork Orange," creating an awesome thrash metal opus
around this timeless and exciting subject. A-LEX will be available on
Steamhammer/SPV January 27, 2009 and certainly has what it takes to
shake up the foundations of the metal scene: few other albums from
this genre sound as ambitious or impressive.
"A lot of people know Stanley Kubrick's film, 'A Clockwork Orange,'
which is a movie classic, but few realize that the last chapter of the
book is missing from the film. And that's what in my opinion is
extremely important for the message that Anthony Burgess wanted to
convey: it's your own free will, your own free choice, in which
environment you choose to move," band mastermind Andreas Kisser
explains his interpretation of this historic publication. "Following
his stay in hospital, Alex, the book's main character, returns to
society, meets old friends, finds a wife and starts a family. He makes
this choice of his own will, irrespective of what the government had
in mind for him," an interesting aspect which Sepultura underlines
with their typical hard-as-nails thrash metal compositions on A-LEX
(an album title with a double meaning: in Russian, "A-Lex" means
something like "lawless"). The recording is divided into four
chapters, the first three of which cover the familiar plot from the
movie, while chapter four reflects the final part of the story from
the book. "Every chapter, from 'Alex I' to 'Alex IV,' starts with a
brief introduction which allows the listener to follow the story at
all times," Kisser explains.
Along with Sepultura's familiar raw metal tunes, which are omnipresent
on the one-hour recording, they have authentically translated Alex's
affinity with Ludwig van Beethoven: supported by classical symphonic
musicians from Sao Paulo, the track "Ludwig Van" picks up Beethoven's
9th Symphony and transposes it into a heavy metal context. This number
is a definite must, and it would be impossible to optimize this
combination of classical music and savage thrash metal.
The material was produced by Sepultura and Stanley Soares at the Trama
Studios in Sao Paulo and mastered by George Marino at New York's
Sterling Sound studios. A-LEX is the first Sepultura album to feature
new drummer Jean Dolabella, who joined the fold during the DANTE XXI
tour. "We've known Jean for more than three years; he's from our
hometown of Belo Horizonte and joined us when Roy Mayorga left to team
up with Stone Sour," Kisser introduces his new drummer. "He's ten
years younger than the other band members and has brought a new
approach into the band. Jean has an amazing amount of energy and
motivation. We're very happy to have him with us, and we're proud of
the positive impact he's had on the material on A-LEX."
With Dolabella as Sepultura's driving force and more outstanding
guitar work courtesy of Andreas Kisser, A-LEX proves to be a dynamic
and extremely haunting metal opus which was written in just three
months and created more or less on the basis of extended studio jams.
The listener feels this spontaneity and vibrancy in every single note.
A-LEX will be available in two versions: a regular jewel case and a
vinyl gatefold LP.

-Into Eternity Debut New Video For "Time Immemorial" On MySpace
The wait is finally over as Canadian extreme progressive metal icons
Into Eternity proudly present their new conceptual, visual masterpiece
for "Time Immemorial." The track appears on the group's critically
acclaimed concept album, THE INCURABLE TRAGEDY, which debuted at #17
on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart upon its September release. Click
on the link below to check it out now.
The video, which features vocalist Stu Block in a prominent role, was
filmed in Montreal in August, just before the group embarked on the
Summer Slaughter Canada tour. That trek was followed by a run
alongside the legendary Iced Earth, which capped off a year that also
saw the band tour with Symphony X, At The Gates and The Dillinger
Escape Plan, among others.
Block (vocals) further comments: "It was really cool and, to be frank,
kinda creepy doing some silent acting in the video. I've done some
acting in high school and some extra work in Vancouver, so I was sorta
familiar with what to do. So, hey Rob Zombie, I'm ready man; throw me
in yer next slasher flick!
"It was a long day for everyone -- 14 hours, I think. I don't think we
knew what to expect from the video because the focus was more on the
acting sequences as opposed to band performance, which was kind of
weird for us. Everyone involved with the video were really laid back
and cool, and the other actors and actresses were really awesome and
helped me out if I had any questions. (They are the pro's, after all!)
"We filmed the video in Montreal at a haunted house that had been
turned into a nightclub/restaurant, so it was a treat both for us to
be filming a video in Canada and for me being a horror movie buff, as
I was definitely in my element. I was hoping for a ghost sighting or
for people to start disappearing periodically, but well, that never
happened.
"We were really pressed for time near the end of the shoot due to the
fact we had to pick up our tour manager from the airport since we were
going to start a new tour, but what a way to start a tour! I think all
in all we are happy the video is finally finished, and we hope our
fans enjoy it! Thanks to all our fans for picking up THE INCURABLE
TRAGEDY, and we will see you all on the road in the future."

two nominations.
-I was saddened to hear metal journalist Adrian Bromley recently
passed away at only 37 years old. I never met him -- or even
communicated with him -- but I owe him a small debt of gratitude. A
long time ago I used to read "Chronicles Of Chaos," a metal e-zine he
co-founded. It was one of the first that I ever recall seeing, and
even though it dealt primarily with the *really* heavy stuff that I
don't always care for, the 'zine was always well-written and served as
a sort of inspiration for Detritus. I'd like to express my sincere
condolences to his family and friends. For more information, check out

.
-Our very own Patrick Brower has been quite the busy little elf this
year. He's been taking on new business ventures, still doing the
Detritus thang, and so much more. Each year he produces an elaborate,
funny Christmas card, and the 2008 version is online now at
http://www.patrickbrower.com/xmas/2008.html . Also, he and some
cohorts usually produce a new holiday-themed song each year.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen in '08 but you can still view an
archive of his past work at http://www.myspace.com/browitzer . Check
it all out. Ho ho ho!
-As a Kiss fan I was excited to hear the news of a new studio album.
(Thanks, Bill!) I really, really hope it's a good one. In the
meantime, for some snarky and funny commentary on the Billboard.com
piece mentioned in "News/Rumors" above, check out

-In my current playlist: Various - WE WISH YOU A METAL XMAS AND A
HEADBANGING NEW YEAR (Armoury), Pretty Maids - IN SANTA'S CLAWS (CBS
Records), John Taglieri - EVERYTHING WE ARE (Leap Dog Music), Suspyre
- WHEN TIME FADES... (Sensory), Ben Averch - START AT THE BEGINNING
(Automatic Earth).

KREATOR - AT THE PULSE OF KAPITULATION - LIVE IN EAST BERLIN 1990
(DVD) (B) SPV/Steamhammer, 2008
DVD: RT: 1:56:26
CD: 15 tracks, RT: 1:10:34
The Berlin Wall came crashing down in November of 1989, signaling the
long overdue reunification of the divided Germany. What better way to
celebrate the end of 40 years of oppressive rule by cramming 7,000
metal-starved East Germans into a concert hall in the former East
Berlin and letting 'em thrash it up to the then-current cream of the
Noise Records crop, i.e. Coroner, Sabbat, Tankard, and Kreator? It
happened shortly after the fall of the Wall in March of 1990, and
marked a turning point for Germany in general and thrash metal in
particular as the first major heavy metal festival held in what had
formerly been East Germany. Kreator's triumphant set from this
momentous event was released in the early 1990s as the LIVE IN EAST
BERLIN VHS tape but has been out of print for years. Finally fans can
re-live one of the high water marks of Kreator's career with this
newly re-mastered DVD/CD combo, re-titled AT THE PULSE OF KAPITULATION
- LIVE IN EAST BERLIN 1990. Though I've admittedly never been the
biggest fan of Kreator's gnarly Teutonic Slayerisms outside of a few
tracks here and there, I still have to admit that watching this DVD
was a pretty cool experience. I couldn't help but feel emotional while
watching this sizable crowd of formerly repressed metalheads (many of
whom had never attended a metal concert in their lives until this gig)
going absolutely ballistic while Kreator, who were arguably at the
peak of their career when this video was shot (that would've been
their EXTREME AGGRESSIONS period, kids, if you're keeping score) blaze
through 15 tracks of high-speed mayhem including such favorites as
"Under The Guillotine," "Pleasure To Kill," "Riot Of Violence," and
"Betrayer." The video has been upgraded for this DVD release by
Kreator main man Mille Petrozza himself with some audio help from
famed Megadeth/Nevermore/just-about-everybody-else-producer Andy Sneap
(who was also part of that big day in East Berlin many years ago, in
his old role as guitarist for Sabbat!) and the results are both
sonically and visually pleasing. I did notice the picture would
occasionally "jump" during the concert portion but to be honest I'm
not sure if that was due to a lapse in the video quality or merely a
cranky DVD player on my end. Either way, this video is still a wicked-
cool time capsule of a very special period in thrash history. A bonus
documentary about the concert, "The Past And Now," is also
fascinating, as many of the people who organized the East Berlin
festival (and fans who attended it) are brought together again to
share their memories not only of that special day (my favorite: the
guy who proudly displays his original ticket stub from the concert and
calls it his "Holy Relic!" Haha!!), but also of the day-to-day
difficulties of simply being a Metalhead in East Germany before the
fall of the Wall. Most of this segment is spoken in German, obviously,
but thankfully for us Yanks, subtitles are provided. To sweeten the
deal, SPV has added another goodie from the Kreator vaults to this
DVD, a newly re-vamped version of 1991's "Hallucinative Comas" VHS
tape, which was a "mini horror film" made by the band that ties
together several tracks from that year's COMA OF SOULS album with a
loose conceptual story of a scientist named Dr. Wagner, whose studies
in the field of "Violence Research" eventually lead to his becoming a
crazed killer himself. Some of the quick-cuts and rapid-fire editing
here may cause seizures in those with sensitive constitutions, so be
warned, but the injury-to-eyeball and throat-slashing scenes were
unexpectedly nasty!! The package is topped off by a CD version of the
East Berlin concert, which is also re-mastered and brought up to
current audio standards, making AT THE PULSE OF KAPITULATION a must-
buy for the Kreator fan on your holiday shopping list. As Mille
himself might say, "Feel zee endlezz PAIN!!!!" :)

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE - PERPETUAL FLAME (B+) Rising Force
Records, 2008
12 tracks, RT: 68:47

I guess the best and worst thing you can say about Yngwie's new album
PERPETUAL FLAME is that it's not going to throw you any curves -- all
you've come to know and love (or hate) about Mr. Malmsteen is here:
neoclassically structured anthems, soaring operatic vocals, fun
juvenile lyrics, and of course, technically stunning, blazing lead
guitar solos, lots and lots of solos. Indeed, you could be forgiven
for thinking you've heard much of this before, as many of the riffs
and melodies will remind of past glories like "I'll See The Light,
Tonight," "Evil Eye," and "Far Beyond The Sun." The main difference
between PERPETUAL FLAME and the last several Yngwie albums is that the
man behind the mic is now Ripper Owens, he of Judas Priest and Iced
Earth fame, and while his performance is fine, unfortunately his
identity is basically lost singing this material, essentially
indistinguishable from Yngwie's past vocalists, at times sounding
especially like Mark Boals to my ears, with the production placing him
lower in the mix than he should be. In all fairness, the album was
reportedly written before Ripper's involvement, which may explain why
he seems underutilized. Although Ripper's vocals are not fully
realized here, Yngwie still delivers what his fans want on shredders
such as "Damnation Game," "Live To Fight (Another Day)," "Four
Horsemen (Of The Apocalypse)," and "Priest Of The Unholy." Yngwie is
most effective when he lets his guitar take over, and the three
instrumentals accentuate his prowess well, my favorite the emotionally
satisfying "Heavy Heart." So the bottom line is you won't find
anything unexpected on PERPETUAL FLAME, which to the majority of the
faithful will be a good thing. Fans looking for stylistic deviation
will be disappointed, and those who were never on board with Yngwie's
brand of grandiose classical shred will remain unconvinced...

Here's another disc that came to me out of the blue and made me go
"Wow! Where the hell has this band been my whole life?" Rebellion was
a totally unknown commodity to me till I slid it into my CD player and
immediately became immersed in their unexpectedly cool brand of
fantasy/power metal. Thanks to Wikipedia, I learned that Rebellion
hails from Frankfurt, Germany, that they feature a couple of ex-Grave
Digger dudes (guitarist Uwe Lulis and bassist Tomi Gottlich) in their
ranks, and MIKLAGARD (sub-titled THE HISTORY OF THE VIKINGS VOLUME
II), their third album overall, is the second disc in a planned
trilogy of albums dealing with Vikings and Norse mythology. Before my
first spin of MIKLAGARD I was dismayed at the idea of "walking in
during the middle of the movie" so to speak, since I had never heard
the first part of what appears to be a very in-depth, involved story,
but thankfully it wasn't a problem because on a strictly musical
basis, MIKLAGARD simply freakin' rips! I'd say that MIKLAGARD closely
resembles a German-accented Iced Earth (if Jon Schaffer were obsessed
with Norse history instead of aliens and horror movie characters),
mainly due to Michael Seifert's passing vocal resemblance to Iced
Earth's Matt Barlow. Other reference points would include Grave Digger
(naturally, though I prefer Herr Seifert's vocals over anything that's
ever been sung by Grave Digger's tone-deaf Chris Boltendahl), Manowar,
and the steely chug of Primal Fear. After a brief spoken word intro
"Vi Seglar Mot Miklagard" (which apparently translates to "We Sail To
Miklagard" and features a guest appearance by Morgana Lefay's Charles
Rytkonen), Rebellion tears into the fist-raising opener "Sweden" and
doesn't let up for the remaining dozen tracks. The hero of our story
is an unnamed narrator who dreams of joining a Viking crew and seeing
the fabled land of "Miklagard" for himself, thus each song on the CD
details another part of his journey. I won't even try to boil all the
things that happen to our hero down for you, let's just say that over
the course of this album, he encounters the ghosts of past sailors,
battles crooked merchants, fights off another Viking horde intent on
taking over his ship, among adventures worthy of an old Robert E.
Howard pulp novel. Even if this quasi-"Conan"/Dungeons & Dragons style
storyline isn't quite your bag, Rebellion's music should still quicken
the pulse of most headbangers. Rather than the clean, polished, choir-
filled and over produced stuff that passes for most of today's
"fantasy power metal," (yeah, I'm looking at YOU, Rhapsody Of Fire!),
Rebellion deals in dirtier, chugging, rough-and-ready kind of
material. If "Taste Of Steel" doesn't get you headbanging (or at least
hoisting your beer stein overhead) the Metal content in your blood
must be about a quart low! I honestly had been getting burnt out on
the whole Germanic power metal scene over the past several years, but
MIKLAGARD was an enjoyable eye opener that proved there are still some
absolute gems coming out of Deutschland. Nothing more to say except
"excellent!"
