-Bruce Dickinson's Graphic Designer Explains Historical Coincidence

[Note: Thiago Sarkis from http://solada.wordpress.com/ sent over this
English version of a story he posted at his site. Very cool. - Tim]

Hugh Gilmour, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)'s graphic designer whose
artworks can be seen on ANTHOLOGY (2006), THE BEST OF BRUCE DICKINSON
(2001), ALIVE IN STUDIO A (1995), THE CHEMICAL WEDDING (1998) and
TYRANNY OF SOULS (2005), spoke to Roadie Crew Magazine's Thiago Sarkis
about the historical coincidence between the front cover of
Dickinson's THE CHEMICAL WEDDING and Prog/Jazz/Fusion group
Gilgamesh's ANOTHER FINE TUNE YOU'VE GOT ME INTO (released in 1978!).

"I didn't know about the Gilgamesh LP cover, which was very
interesting. Designers and artists are inspired and influenced by each
other all of the time. I think it's a much bigger problem for someone
like Roger Dean, whose brilliant artwork is almost instantly
recognizable as prog rock, so ends up being used as some sort of
visual shorthand," said the British designer.

According to Gilmour, he and Bruce are fans of William Blake, and
didn't know about the Gigalmesh's 1978 release: "Both Bruce and myself
are big fans of William Blake. I didn't know about that Gilgamesh
album, and I'm sure Bruce didn't know either. All of the images used
had to be licensed officially from the Tate Gallery in London, who own
them."

-Sacred Oath Return With New Studio Album

Public Service Message: A Blood Storm has been forecast to blanket the
entire metal planet through the holiday season with no relief in
sight!

Sacred Oath is making an unmastered MP3 of the song from their brand
new album freely available at http://www.sacredoath.net/ in
celebration of their redesigned Web site.

The new self-titled album from Sacred Oath contains 14 songs,
including "Blood Storm," "Paradise Lost," "Scourge Of Sin," "Buried
Alive," and is expected to see a late-spring 2009 release date. The
album was produced by lead singer/guitarist Rob Thorne and features
the current lineup that appeared on the critically-acclaimed live
album 'TILL DEATH DO US PART (2008 Angel Thorne Music).

The Web site has been redesigned by Ioannis and his company Vivid
Images Creative to support the anticipated release of the new CD.
Ioannis has also painted the cover art for the album, which fans can
preview on the new site as well. Photography for the CD, site, and
general publicity use was done by Mark Weiss.

Sacred Oath is recognized for pioneering the power metal genre with
their cult-classic release A CRYSTAL VISION (1987 Mercenary Records).
The band broke apart for almost seventeen years, but reformed with the
triumphant DARKNESS VISIBLE CD (2007 Sentinel Steel) and followed that
release with a live album recorded at the first date of their European
tour (Keep It True Festival, Germany).

Sacred Oath biography:

Sacred Oath has long been recognized in the heavy metal underground as
one of the pioneers of the American power metal movement that began
back in 1985. Their debut album, A CRYSTAL VISION, has become a cult-
classic, and established the dark, progressive sound of the band that
many have imitated. What some fans don't know is that Rob Thorne
reformed Sacred Oath in 2007, and released DARKNESS VISIBLE, putting
the band back into full active status with a subsequent European tour
(including an appearance at Keep It True Festival) and a live album,
'TILL DEATH DO US PART, that was featured on iTunes as one of the top
live Metal albums of 2008. Sacred Oath has just finished a new studio
album called simply SACRED OATH, including fourteen brand new songs
that are sure to leave as lasting an impression as their debut, and
establish the band as a vital creative force in the modern metal
scene.

Word is quickly spreading that this is one band you must see live, and
they anticipate another European tour in 2009 to promote the new
album.

-Rob Zombie Back To Write & Direct "H2," Sequel To 2007's Hit Film
"Halloween"

Zombie Nominated For Grammy - Best Hard Rock Performance "Lords Of
Salem"

HOLLYWOOD, CA -- 2009 is the year of Zombie as Rob Zombie steps
forward to write and direct "H2," sequel his box office hit
"Halloween" in 2007.

Once again, Rob Zombie has been tapped to write and direct "H2," the
sequel to Zombie's 2007 reinvention of the horror classic "Halloween."
Malek Akkad of Trancas International Films, who also produced 2007's
"Halloween" with Dimension, will produce the sequel, along with Andy
Gould of Spectacle Entertainment Group, Zombie's long time manager and
producing partner. The announcement was made by Bob Weinstein, Co-
Chairman of The Weinstein Company.

Dimension's "Halloween" scored the highest Labor Day weekend opening
ever with a record-breaking $30.6 million in its first four days of
release and went on to gross nearly $60 million at the domestic box
office in 2007.

Zombie's "H2" will pick up at the exact moment the first movie stopped
and follow the aftermath of Michael Myers' murderous rampage through
the eyes of heroine Laurie Strode.

"H2" will be Zombie's fifth written and directed feature. Prior to the
success of "Halloween," Zombie released the critically-acclaimed film
"The Devil's Rejects" (2005), the follow-up to his cult classic "House
Of 1000 Corpses" (2004). Zombie just wrapped production on his
animated feature film "The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto" due to be
released in 2009. Zombie, also an accomplished recording artist, has
sold over fifteen million albums worldwide, making him one of Geffen
Records' top selling and longest running artists.

Bob Weinstein stated: "Following the success of 2007's 'Halloween,' we
are thrilled to be back in business with Rob Zombie, bringing a sequel
to theatres. The fans have made it clear -- and we agree -- that they
feel the franchise is in great hands with Rob Zombie."

"I am very excited to be working with Bob Weinstein again and
returning to the world of 'Halloween,' states Zombie. "The remake laid
the groundwork, now it's time to really take Michael Myers to the next
level. I believe we've just barely scratched the surface of where we
can take this series."

In the music arena, Zombie has been nominated for a Grammy for Best
Hard Rock Performance for "Lords Of Salem" off the EDUCATED HORSES
album [Geffen Records]. 2009 also brings a new studio album, still un-
titled, and the White Zombie box set [UMe Records] is out now. Zombie
also finished his long time project "The Haunted World Of El
Superbeasto" a full-length cartoon feature whose release date is soon
to be announced. For updates on ALL Zombie click to

-Desert Rock Festival 2009: Full Lineup Announced

The organizer of Desert Rock Festival, Center Stage Management, is
excited to announce its full lineup for its 6th edition held at Dubai
Festival City on Friday, March 6th 2009. Six international heavy metal
bands will dominate the stage providing 7 hours of live music,
supported by two lucky bands chosen from competitions currently
running across the globe. A day not to miss!

Headliner confirmed
The lineup for this year's Desert Rock Festival will feature:

Motörhead, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Chimaira, August Burns Red, Nervecell
and two unsigned bands from various competitions

This marks Motorhead's first ever performance in the Middle East since
the beginning of their career in 1975. On their 30th anniversary, they
won a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance," promising a powerful show.

A celebration of heavy metal
In 2009, Desert Rock Festival will be a full day dedicated to and
celebrating heavy metal. The acclaimed music event started off as a 3-
hour show in 2004 and expanded into a 2-day festival in 2007 with a
heavy metal day to start with and "mainstream" rock the next. However,
based on the popularity of the heavy metal genre in the region and the
day dedicated to it, festival promoters confirm Desert Rock Festival
will take place on Friday, March 6th, rewarding loyal Desert Rock
"disciples" that have made it a success, every year since its
inception. The festival has been described as "the hottest rock
festival on the planet" by Kerrang! and "a major event attended by a
vast crowd from all parts of the Middle East plus a smattering of rock
'n' roll minded British and American expats" by Metal Hammer.

-Walter Trout Nominated For Rock Blues Album Of The Year

May 7th, 2009 marks the 30th Blues Music Awards @ Memphis Cook
Convention Center in downtown Memphis

HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Walter Trout's critically acclaimed 2008 release THE
OUTSIDER [Mascot Records] is nominated by The Blues Foundation and the
Blues Music Awards for Rock Blues Album of the Year.

THE OUTSIDER features 13 Walter Trout originals (the title track co-
written with Trout's bass player Rick Knapp). Trout's backing band on
THE OUTSIDER includes drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp), bassist
Hutch Hutchinson and pianist Jon Clearly (Bonnie Raitt), as well as
Skip Edwards and Samuel Avila on the Hammond B3 and a special guest
appearance by harmonica wiz Jason Ricci.

Stylistically hard to pigeonhole [Is Trout's music too blues for rock
-- or too rock for blues?], to label Walter Trout's music is to limit
it. With more than 35 years of touring and recording under his belt,
this New Jersey native has been "loved and hated, accused and
vindicated, packaged and presented for everyone to see," as his brand
new, autobiographical song "Welcome To The Human Race" details.

Being in the studio with Trout approaches temporary insanity -- the
excitement, the unknown, the experimentation. Truly tantalizing sounds
on par with those infamous Eric Clapton licks and Stevie Ray Vaughan
riffs, are testament to Trout's talent. His music speaks to your soul,
warms your heart and has your foot tapping. Trout brings the blues to
life and invigorates rock in a manner all too rare these days.

Grab your own copy of THE OUTSIDER and catch the wave of Walter Trout.

HOLY MOSES - AGONY OF DEATH (C+) Wacken Records/SPV, 2008

Led by legendary frontwoman Sabina Classen, Holy Moses have been
making a racket on the international thrash metal scene since the
mid-'80s, and though I've read about them in 'zines and on the
Internet for years, I had never had a chance to check the band out
till AGONY OF DEATH arrived in my mailbox. As soon as track #1,
"Imagination," detonated on my stereo, I immediately thought that the
band was very well named because my reaction was "Holy Moses, this is
some seriously heavy sh*t!" (Haha) The band's musical attack contains
all the hallmarks of the classic Teutonic thrash style (think
Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, etc.) while Classen's completely insane
vocal screeches sound like some unholy love child of Wendy O. Williams
and Mille (Kreator) Petrozza. (That's supposed to be a compliment, by
the way.) If I were unfamiliar with the band I honestly would not know
that this band had a female vocalist behind the mic, because Sabina's
growls prove that she is more than capable of playing with the big
boys. She's the Anti-Doro! Though I'm impressed with the machine-like
riffing and overall brutality of this release, I truthfully can only
take this brand of take-no-prisoners, kill-everything-that-moves
thrash in small doses (and the vocals, more often than not, are the
deal breaker for me with the German bands) but even though I'm not a
huge WOOOARRRGH vocal fan I still have to admit that musically, Holy
Moses have definitely got their you-know-what together. Wimps like me
who prefer a little more melody in their thrash probably won't care
for Holy Moses' style of crush but those of you who groove on any of
the aforementioned Germanic bands can definitely add AGONY OF DEATH to
your collections with confidence. Now where did I leave that bottle of
Excedrin? :)

MONGREL - FEAR, LIES, & PROPAGANDA (B-) Screaming Ferret Wreckords,
2008
14 tracks, RT: 45:56
The dictionary defines "mongrel" as "a dog of mixed or indeterminate
breed" or "any cross between different things, esp. if inharmonious or
indiscriminate." I'd say the second definition pretty well sums up
this Massachusetts-based quartet, who mix equal parts of old school
punk, hard rock, and metal to create a catchy crossbreed of genres.
FEAR, LIES, & PROPAGANDA was self-released by the band in 2006 on
Immolation Records but was picked up for wider distribution by
Screaming Ferret Records in 2008. The band's politically-charged
lyrics and no-frills musical attack bring to mind such greats as Black
Flag, Warrior Soul and early Corrosion Of Conformity and should please
both the punk and metal crowds. The Misfits-esque "Whoaa-oh's" in
album opener "I Refuse" had me bobbin' my head right from the get-go,
while the fast paced "Who Would Jesus Destroy" jacked the heart rate
up as well. My favorite track would be "Shut Up, Get Dead," which
features some fast-paced, hyperactive vocal ranting that would make
Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies proud (That track also provided me
with my most quoted lyric of 2008 -- "Shut up, get dead, 'cuz you suck
at life." Haha!), while "Dyslexic Alchemist (F.I.A.A.)" sounds like a
mash-up of early Metallica (during the verses) and Nirvana (on the
choruses). The initials in the title stand for "F**ked It All Away,"
in case you're wondering. Another highlight is "West Memphis Hell," a
thrashing track based upon the tragic story of the "West Memphis 3."
All in all, FEAR, LIES, & PROPAGANDA successfully pulls off being
heavy without being overly extreme, thought provokingly political
without being preachy, and musically solid all the way around.
According to the band's MySpace there's already a follow-up to FEAR,
LIES, & PROPAGANDA in the works for 2009 and I'd be interested in
checking it out when it hits the streets. The Screaming Ferret version
of this CD apparently features a cover of Amen's "Coma America" as a
bonus track but my copy (released on the band's own label) seems to be
missing that song, so I can't comment. From what little I know about
Amen, though, it sounds like they're the perfect band for Mongrel to
cover. Though I didn't quite know what to expect from this disc when I
first received it, this Mongrel ended up putting a pretty decent bite
on me.

MOTORHEAD - BETTER MOTORHEAD THAN DEAD - LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH (B)

Talk about a double dose of Head trauma!! When this combo of
Motorhead's latest studio album and its preceding live disc arrived in
my mailbox in the same package a while back, I was heard to comment,
"Wow, I haven't gotten this much Head in one day since my college
girlfriend!" (Bwahahahaha -- I know, I'm going to Hell for that joke!)
But seriously folks, those of you who've checked in with Lemmy and
company over their past three or four albums (and if you haven't, you
really should!) would be hard pressed to argue the fact that the
current Motorhead lineup is the most consistently killer in the band's
history. Like a fine wine (or perhaps a good cheese), Motorhead
continues to defy Father Time and gets better with age. BETTER
MOTORHEAD THAN DEAD was recorded at London's legendary Hammersmith
Odeon in June of 2005 to mark the band's 30th anniversary and the 23-
track set finds the band as on-target and ear-shreddingly LOUD as
ever. There are no frills to the band's performance -- Lemmy starts
off the set by announcing, "Good evening, we are Motorhead, and we
play Rock N Roll!" before blasting into "Dr. Rock," then leads his
compatriots Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell through a thorough overview
of Motor-history, including such classics as "Stay Clean," "No Class,"
"(We Are) The Road Crew," "Killed By Death" and of course "Iron Fist"
and "Ace Of Spades." The then-current INFERNO album (one of their best
in my book) is represented by the excellent "Killers," "In The Name Of
Tragedy," and the acoustic blues number "Whorehouse Blues." It's also
a treat to hear Lemmy's salute to his spiritual brothers from New York
City, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." kicking off Disc 2 and Dee getting to show off
his drumming prowess in a solo during "Sacrifice." I was a little
bummed that a personal favorite Head track of mine, "Eat The Rich,"
was not included but otherwise I have no complaints about the song
selection on BETTER MOTORHEAD THAN DEAD. Lord knows that there are
literally dozens of other live Motorhead offerings out there already
but I'll wager that the band's legions of hardcore fans will want to
add this one to their collections nonetheless. Moving on to the
current MOTORIZER, I can only echo my comments from the last two
Motorhead reviews I've written for Detritus over the past couple of
years (the aforementioned INFERNO in 2004 and 2006's KISS OF DEATH) --
if you're a Motorhead fan, you'll be in seventh heaven as soon as you
press "play" on this one. Opening track "Runaround Man" sets the tone
for the entire album, i.e. "We're Motorhead, we don't f**k around, so
either get on board or get out of the way!" The single/video "Rock
Out" is a Motor-mission statement, plain and simple, and the sleazy
rocker "English Rose" is Lemmy as his sneering, leering best. In a
nutshell, MOTORIZER will crush, pulverize, and pound you into
submission, which is all anyone can ask from a new Motorhead release.
Long Live Lemmy, and here's to another 30+ years of cranium crushing
rock and roll from one of metal's true legends.

SCELERATA - SKELETONS DOMINATION (B+) Nightmare Records, 2008

Power metal from Brazil, let me see, does that sound familiar? Oh
yeah, Angra! Scelerata certainly have cut their teeth studying the
works of their fellow countrymen but offer up some interesting
variations. Starting off very strong we have one of the best tracks on
the album, "Enemy Within," a combination of killer riffs, soaring
melodic vocals, precise drumming and some slippery lead work. "Leave
Me Alone" is another high energy highlight, moving along at a brisk
pace with some effective guitar/keyboard interplay. Elsewhere we have
"Cancer" with cool riffs and more elegant guitar work, and "Phoenix
Tales," successfully mixing crunch and accessibility. The heavy
emphasis on powerful rhythms and tasty lead breaks helps to set
Scelerata apart from the many bands treading similar territory, but
they are still highly derivative of Angra, Helloween and Gamma Ray --
i.e., vocalist Carl Casagrade is an excellent singer, but needs to
move away from the Matos/Kiske style to avoid constant comparisons.
Otherwise, a very solid, well done dose of power metal.

THEORY OF A DEADMAN - SCARS & SOUVENIRS (B+) Roadrunner Records, 2008

The third release from these Canadian rockers (previous cuts were the
self-titled debut in 2002 and GASOLINE in 2005) shows growth from a
great band too few people know about. Members Tyler Connolly (vocals,
guitar), Dean Back (bass), and David Brenner (guitar) make up a band
that is more melodic and somewhat more mainstream than the band name
would make you think. The lack of permanent drummer has not slowed
them down either. Tim Hart left after the first release; Brent Fitz
(Union, Econoline Crush, Vince Neil, Alice Cooper) helped them out on
tour for the second CD, while Robin Diaz (Three Doors Down, Trapt) did
the studio work on their last two releases. The band's first record
was produced by Chad Kroeger (Nickleback) and that influence shows up
on each of the band's CDs. And with Brent Smith (Shinedown) and Chris
Daughtry (Daughtry) each guesting on separate tracks on this release
it's surprising there has not been more buzz and airplay from this
band. "Bad Girlfriend" has been getting some radio time and may be
familiar for the pounding beat and somewhat risqué lyrics. But if you
let this song form your whole opinion of the band you are missing out.
Connolly is the band's main songwriter and has a way with lyrics --
check out the methods of revenge on a truly evil girlfriend on "Little
Smirk." If it gets released as a single "Hate My Life" has the
potential to be a live concert anthem. Other tracks that must be heard
are "So Happy" and "Not Meant to Be." Tracks 1-10 are the best of
them, with "End Of The Summer" as the weakest track. If you have been
curious about this band, it's definitely worth picking up the CD. If
you like it, go back to their first releases; each is a bit different,
and the lyrics are what will hook you. Theory rocks. With their
opening slot with Hinder on the current Motley Crue tour, the exposure
may give them the word-of-mouth PR exposure they need to make them a
household name. If you are checking out the tour, do not skip Theory
Of A Deadman as the opening band -- you won't be disappointed.

ZZ TOP - LIVE FROM TEXAS (C) Eagle Records, 2008
16 tracks, RT: 1:16:00

ZZ Top's LIVE FROM TEXAS is the companion to the band's first-ever
live concert DVD (released June 24, 2008 as both a DVD and a Blu-Ray).
All of the band's radio classics are represented here. The track list
goes like this: "Got Me Under Pressure," "Waitin' For The Bus," "Jesus
Just Left Chicago," "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," "Cheap Sunglasses,"
"Pearl Necklace," "Just Got Paid," "Rough Boy," "Blues Intro," "Blue
Jean Blues," "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," "Legs,"
"Tube Snake Boogie," "La Grange," "Tush." It's amazing that this band
has not had a lineup change in almost 40 years. The songs are
delivered in a true-to-form fashion to the original recordings. Billy
F. Gibbons' guitar is up front and as dirty as ever and any fan of his
playing will not be disappointed in his performance. The recording is,
for lack of a better term, a very live sounding record. No noticeable
overdubs or studio tricks. Just a bass, guitar, drums, and vocals with
the accompanying crowd responses pushed up at all the right times. A
few keys show up on songs like "Rough Boy" but it is very suitable.
While there is nothing here that will overly excite the casual
listener, true fans of ZZ Top will want this release in their
collection as it is a true testament to the live performances that
this band has been laying out on the road for 40 years.
