-New Queensryche Video For "If I Were King" To Make Worldwide Premiere
At Military.com On March 23

Site Will Also Premiere Exclusive Podcast Interview With Geoff Tate As
Well As An Op-Ed Column Written By Tate

AMERICAN SOLDIER Available March 31 From Atco/Rhino

LOS ANGELES -- The video for "If I Were King," the first single from
Queensryche's highly anticipated new album AMERICAN SOLDIER, will
receive is worldwide debut on Monday, March 23 at Noon ET on
Military.com, home of the largest military and veteran membership
organization. The military community site, 10 million members strong,
will also feature a podcast interview with lead singer Geoff Tate as
well as an op-ed column that he wrote exclusively for the site.

The video for "If I Were King" was directed by J. Andrew Colletti and
Jonathan Williams and addresses the same themes of loss and healing
that are the focus of the track. The song was written based on an
interview Tate conducted with Sean Lenahan, a veteran of U.S.
conflicts in Somalia and Kosovo.

"Military.com is the perfect place to premiere the 'If I Were King'
video and we are proud to be involved with the site," says Tate. "I
hope their members can find a connection to the song and video. The
whole album is a tribute to the soldiers, told in their own words,
sometimes using their own voices, and I hope it will spark discussion
within this community."

AMERICAN SOLDIER features a dozen songs inspired by numerous
interviews with veterans conducted by Tate, who was intent on telling
their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served
in various conflicts (from World War II to Iraq) Tate turned their
firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical
examination of war from the soldier's perspective.

-Fifth Angel Begins Work On First Album In 20 Years

[Note: This is from http://www.fifthangel.net/ . - Neal]

SEATTLE, WASH. -- Although not active for 20 years, one of Seattle's
finest metal bands, Fifth Angel, has begun work toward a new studio
project. Fifth Angel, formed in the mid-1980s, released two studio
records, FIFTH ANGEL (1986) and TIME WILL TELL (1989) to critical
acclaim, building a rabid underground fan following. The band's song
"Midnight Love" was the featured theme song of radio personality
Howard Stern's TV show in the early 1990s.

The following is an official statement from the band on its status:

After 20 years, the musical wheels have started turning in the Fifth
Angel world. Last fall, Ed Archer (rhythm guitar) felt the time was
right to open up and get out the songs popping into his head and
slowly began talking to the other members of Fifth Angel about working
on some material. Now in 2009, that work has commenced, with Ed having
completed demos for four songs, with another 15-20 ideas being worked
on for future demos. John Macko (bass) and Kendall Bechtel (lead
guitar) are also doing work with writing and recording demos.

The road to this point was a long one. We disbanded in 1990 after not
receiving support from the industry. Promises weren't kept and the
change in musical landscape from metal to grunge had the same impact
on Fifth Angel as it did with most bands of the period. While fans
didn't forget about Fifth Angel, the business side of music did. We
all went on to other careers or other bands, perhaps not content, but
proud of what we achieved.

However, with technology today allowing for remote recording, the
Internet, etc., the world is a smaller place and the time is right for
us to reconnect with our music and see where it leads. At present, the
plan isn't for Fifth Angel to be a "career band," but we're all
dedicated to working on songs, and working toward the possibility of
getting an album out there, and perhaps playing a few shows in
different areas of the globe for all those fans that were denied that
so many years ago.

Our lineup, as it sits now, remains the one on the TIME WILL TELL
album: Ted Pilot on vocals, Ed Archer on rhythm guitar, John Macko on
bass, and Kendall Bechtel on lead guitar. We have a drummer or two in
mind to complete the lineup, and when the time is right, will announce
who will fill that role in Fifth Angel.

For now, just know that the entire band appreciates every fan out
there that has said such complimentary things about our music over the
past 20 years. We've seen the comments on Amazon.com and YouTube, read
the e-mails sent to FifthAngel.net and observed all the discussion on
message boards on the Internet. We know bands say this all the time,
but we truly are humbled by your enthusiasm for our music,
particularly after being disbanded for so long. It means a lot to us.

Hopefully, schedules permitting, we'll have some new music for
everyone in the next year.

- Ted, Ed, John, and Kendall (Fifth Angel)

We can however confirm that Danger Danger's Ted Poley with special

Ted sent the following message to fans...

"I am sorry to see that a few of my good friends couldn't make it to

psyched to be returning to the U.K. with my own killer U.S.A. band
which features my brothers Vic Rivera, Eddie Campbell, Doug Odell, and
new drummer Ed Faust.

"To play a show with John Waite (one of my IDOLS!), and get to see
Wigwam (one of my favourite new bands!) live and get a taste of all of
the other great bands is a personal dream come true and we are very
much looking forward to it. Expect to hear a cool set exclusive to
this show, which will include a few cool songs from my own musical
career outside of D2, and some Poley/Rivera slammers along with some
of the usual fun favourites!

"I will of course be on hand as usual to try to sell you stuff, sign
whatever you bring, take photos, and drink your booze should you be so
generously inclined as to offer up a shot of Southern Comfort. Our
thanks to Mark and all at Z for adding us!

"See ya at the party in May! tp"

Testimonials:
"Jeb Wright is not just my American BloodBrother, he is a heart and
soul BloodBrother to real American music lovers everywhere as he
continues to fan the flames of the greatest classic rock of all times.
Jeb is a SoulBrother, FunkBrother BloodBrother, all American Rock-N-
Roll maniac, and he deserves me!" -- Ted Nugent

"Once in a while, someone writes a book for the sheer love of the
subject. They need to put on paper the things they've been feeling. It
doesn't happen often, but when it does it becomes a special moment for
the reader. 'Stadium Rock' is one of those books, and the author Jeb
Wright is one of those people. -- Rock Journalist Steven Rosen

"Jeb Wright is unique and a very natural interviewer." -- Paul Rodgers

"{Wright's] straightforward, unabashed interviewing style remains
consistent through all twelve interviews and makes for an interesting
read even if the reader is not a fan of the particular band being
interviewed." -- Abort Magazine

"From one Topeka boy to another, it's always great working with Jeb."
-- Phil Ehart of Kansas

"'Stadium Rock' is a fun and fast read full of interesting little
moments; Paul Rodgers of Bad Company talks about how he waited for a
full moon to go outside and record his vocals for the group's
signature tune 'Bad Company,' Joe Perry of Aerosmith hypes his Mango
Peach Tango hot sauce (and of course discusses the band's celebrated
rehabilitation) while Lou Gramm of Foreigner explains how he lost his
rock star looks by ballooning up to 255 pounds in the aftermath of
having surgery to remove a tumor." -- antimusic.com

"When Jeb interviewed me, I already knew him as a backstage regular. I
think it made me more open and honest." -- Neal Doughty of REO
Speedwagon

"Wright's interviews are sure to elicit a series of smiles, frowns and
'I didn't know that,' responses from readers... When I picked it up, I
couldn't put it back down! That's the best compliment I can pay to
Wright and 'From The Vault Series 1: Stadium Rock.'" -- Classic Rock
Music Blog

"Jeb Wright is a font of Rock N Roll knowledge. His interview
questions are some of the best we have heard. He has a way of getting
to the interesting stuff that people want to know about. Nothing
boring about Jeb. We love him!" -- Roger Earl of Foghat

"[Wright's] love for the music bleeds through every question, and he's
right there with every answer -- his passion and experience connects
with every interviewee. This is the kind of stuff they don't teach you
at journalism school." -- PowerLineAD.com

"Jeb Wright asks the questions people want to know about. This book
makes a great gift, but read it before you wrap it!" -- Tom Scholz

"It is in some of these chats that you can watch Jeb put his subjects
at ease, coaxing out details and frankness and frankincense and mirth,
making for an effortlessly enjoyable trawl through time, Jeb's weirdly
incredulous 'been there and almost bought the farm' laugh being his
best weapon at lightening the mood, even if subject matter gets
tough." -- Music Journalist Martin Popoff

-Over The Rainbow, Neal Morse And Dan Baird Confirmed For Sweden Rock
Festival 2009!

"There will be no reunion of Rainbow." These are the words from
Ritchie Blackmore. So the closest we will ever get is Over The Rainbow
with 4/5 previous Rainbow members fronted by Joe Lynn Turner and with
Ritchie Blackmore's son on guitar -- this could be pretty good! Dan
Baird, once the front man in Georgia Satellites will show up with his
band Homemade Sin, and charismatic guitar wizard Neal Morse will also
appear at Sweden Rock Festival 2009.

OVER THE RAINBOW (US/D)
There will be no reunion of the legendary Rainbow, says guitarist and
unrivalled band leader Ritchie Blackmore. But this lot is about as
close as you can get to the real thing! Keyboardist Tony Carey,
drummer Bobby Rondinelli, bassist Greg Smith and not least singer Joe
Lynn Turner are all former members of Rainbow, and they have a certain
Mr. Blackmore on guitar. No, not Ritchie, but his son Jürgen, a
definite chip off the old block guitar-playing-wise. Together, they
are Over The Rainbow, and thanks to them we will get the opportunity
at Sweden Rock Festival to hear the classics from one of hard rock's
most beloved bands live once more, the way they were meant to be
played!

DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN (US)
Atlanta resident Dan Baird is best known as the former leader of
Southern rockers The Georgia Satellites, who between 1985-1989
released one EP and three full-length albums of supreme quality,
featuring hits like "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" and "Open All
Night." In 1990, he "fired himself" from the band, and has since
continued as a solo artist, with different backing bands. He formed
the band Homemade Sin in 2005, as always with faithful companion Mauro
Magellan (drums) at his side, and their eponymous debut arrived last
year. If you want your rock simple, gritty and honest, Dan Baird &
Homemade Sin will be very much up your alley.

NEAL MORSE (US)
Neal Morse is one of the truly great personalities in contemporary
progressive rock. As the founder and former leader of Spock's Beard,
with whom he released six albums between 1995-2002. As a member of
supergroup Transatlantic, who during their brief existence made a
lasting impression on prog-fans around the globe. And finally for his
solo career, that in merely ten years have spawned numerous,
exceedingly eclectic albums. But even as a solo artist Neal Morse is
best known for his progressive rock albums, often concept albums
alluding on his Christian Faith. A truly special artist, and a worthy
addition to this year's Sweden Rock Festival.

-Ian Anderson On Tour

Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute
and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull will be touring this
October and November in the United States. Ian is inviting a number of
guests from the jazz, classical, rock, and world music world to share
the stage for this eclectic acoustic tour.

Widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music,
Ian Anderson remains the crowned exponent of the popular and rock
genres of flute playing. In addition to classical flute, he also plays
ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the
mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures, which
are an integral part of most of the Jethro Tull repertoire.

When not touring with Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson appears more and more
frequently in solo concerts with a variety of lineups from the music
world, including orchestral.

For the 2009 Ian Anderson Plays The Acoustic Jethro Tull, his band
includes jazz artists: bassist David Goodier (Jethro Tull) and Mark
Mondasir (John McLaughlin). Classical musician John O'Hara, who also
plays keyboards and accordion with Jethro Tull will be joining the
lineup, as will German Rock and Flamenco guitarist Florian Opahle. Ian
will have a range of other guests on this tour.

As a solo artist, Ian Anderson has recorded four diverse solo albums
in his career: WALK INTO LIGHT (1983), the flute instrumental
DIVINITIES (1995) which reached number one on the Billboard Classical
chart, and the more recently recorded acoustic collections of songs,
THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRDS (2000), and RUPI'S DANCE (2003).

In 2006, he was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot Watt
University in Edinburgh, the Ivor Award for International Achievement
in Music and, in the New Years Honours List 2008, an MBE for services
to music. In 2008 he celebrated 40 years as a recording and performing
musician.

-Ravenland: Angra's Drummer Featured On Ravenland Debut Album

Angra and Shaman's drummer Ricardo Confessori was recently working at
Fusão Studio in São Paulo, Brazil, with the gothic metal band
Ravenland. Ricardo was responsible for the production of Ravenland's
first album and also played drums on it.

"We didn't know Confessori's work as a producer, but once he is very
experienced with drums sounding and because we think that it
represents a lot for the whole production of an album, we decided
working with him. Afterwards, our previous drummer quit the band and
Confessori told us that he could record the drums parts if we wanted.
Of course we wanted!" said the euphoric vocalist, Camilla Raven, who
also plays violins and keyboards.

The band's debut, entitled ...AND A CROW BRINGS ME BACK, will be
released soon and will feature 14 new tracks and two multimedia
videos. More information is available at http://www.ravenland.net/ .

-Savage Circus Send A Sign Of Life -- New Song Available!

After five million years in hibernation Savage Circus send an
impressive wake-up call: The first song of their new album! Go and get
a listen to the track "The Ordeal" on http://www.savage-circus.com/
and http://www.myspace.com/savagecircus ! The pages are also updated
with some exclusive pictures from the recordings. But that's not all
Savage Circus have to say -- here is the personal letter from the band
to all their fans:

"Hi to all the good folks,

"It's been a long time... and if you say too long, you are damned
right! Well, there is not really one overall reason for this absence;
it's more or less a combination of smaller and bigger things in the
life of the individual band members. But there's been one thing for
sure, that struck all of us at the same time: the separation from
Thomen. This hit us right in the middle of the first songwriting
process for the follow-up album to DREAMLAND MANOR and -- as you may
imagine -- was not really a boost to our creativity. This had to be
'digested' for a while...

"While 'digesting' in Umea, Sweden a lot of things did happen. Jens
and Emilio got involved in the annual House Of Metal Festival (where
SC played in 2007). This is quite a lot of stuff to take care for and
indeed is time consuming. Yet another quite time consuming activity
can be reported from Jens: he built a house! And nevertheless Emilio
has encountered the maybe by far most time consuming thing in the
world: the man got married! Congratulations and welcome to the club!

"But also in Hamburg time moved on. In early 2006 my 3rd (!) daughter
was given birth and she's just sweet as honey. By now she is 3 years
old and started kindergarten in October 2008. This finally gave me
back the time I needed so bad to finish up my songwriting for SC! In
the year before it has been my job to take care of the little one
during the day... I thought, songwriting is best at night, so no
problem. Unfortunately I forgot, how much energy such a little thing
draws from you. Those of you with kids of their own know, what I am
talking about. So this whole thing turned into a more or less
unplanned Sabbath year for little Piet. The only thing I managed to do
was to play two U.S. shows with my other band Iron Savior (check
http://www.iron-savior.com/ for more details on this) and to come up
with a handful of riffs and melodies for the SC songwriting.

"At this point the whole band would like to thank all of you for your
patience big time. And your patience shall be rewarded! We are in the
final process of the songwriting and a good 90% of the songs are
finished and ready to get recorded.

"But it will get even better -- Jens and Emilio have already recorded
vocals on the first track and they added some pics from the recording
that can be found on http://www.savage-circus.com/ . So the pre-
production of the follow-up the the great debut album has started! And
as a proof of life you will find the first teaser track 'The Ordeal'
on http://www.savage-circus.com/ , too!

"So enjoy the first demo-sounds from the forthcoming album and check
back this page very soon for more infos!

"All the best to all of you!

"Emilio, Jens, Mike, Yenz and Piet."

Founded in 2004 things moved rapidly in the Saidian camp as the guys
released their debut album, FOR THOSE WHO WALKED THE PATH FORLORN the
following year. This record was promoted by a full European tour with
Jon Oliva's Pain. The Savatage mastermind liked the band so much he
contributed guest vocals on their following album PHOENIX, which was
released in September 2006. Hitting the club and festival circuit,
Saidian's meteoric rise peaked with an earth shaking performance at
the first Magic Circle Festival in summer 2007. [Documented on the
Magic Circle Festival DVD Vol. 1].

Now with the strongest lineup to date the band cut its blazing new
album EVERCIRCLE. The recording took place between March - September
of 2008 with the talents of German producer Axel Heckert, (now also
Saidian's live engineer). EVERCIRCLE showcases a broader musical
spectrum for Saidian including a mix of headbanging anthems, melodic
rockers, powerful ballads and the band's first cover song, the 1981
hit, "Tokyo" from the German hard rock band of the same name (later
known as Craaft). One listen to songs like the mystic "Solomon's
Dance," the powerful "Pale Moon Rider" or the barnstorming opener "Out
Of The Shadows" and you'll hear what the European festival scene has
been raising their ale horns to for half a decade. Prost!

Upcoming Shows:

May 23 - Rockfabrik (Club 2), Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg (Germany)
May 31 - Kutival Open Air, Bretten/ Golshausen, Baden-Württemberg

-Powerwolf Upload First New Song Off Upcoming Album BIBLE OF THE
BEAST, Reveal Musical Direction Of The New Album!

Heavy Metal chiefs Powerwolf have uploaded the first new song off
their upcoming new album BIBLE OF THE BEAST! Click on
http://www.metalblade.de/ or http://www.myspace.com/ to check out
"Raise Your Fist, Evangelist":

http://www.metalblade.de/mp3/powerwolf/raiseyourfistevangelist.mp3
http://www.myspace.com/metalbladeeurope

BIBLE OF THE BEAST has become the most powerful and heaviest Powerwolf
album to date, adding a harsher edge to the typical Powerwolf sound,
while still including all the trademarks Powerwolf are known and loved
for. Guitar player Matthew Greywolf: "When we started writing new
songs it became clear that Attila had developed his voice to a new
level of intensity and heaviness. He has explored a lot of really
heavy bands during the last two years which he hadn't known before,
and this probably left an impression. And with Attila raising the
level of aggression in his voice, it felt natural that the whole band
followed during the songwriting process. We finally were able to set
free all the power and strength that lied hidden underneath the wolf's
fur during all these years, and now it felt like the time for its
outbreak had come. The songwriting felt like a giant rush of energy,
which songs as 'Raise Your Fist, Evangelist' or 'Werewolves Of
Armenia' display quite clearly."

After three months of intense songwriting the band was ready to hit
the studios in November 2008, this time recording the basic tracks at
Kohlekeller Studios near Frankfurt in Germany, while once again for
the church organ parts they invaded a chapel near Thionville in
Northern France. "Recording a real organ gives a much more haunting
feeling to the music. No keyboard could ever transport that, and
that's why we don't do it the easy way, but take the ordeal of
recording a real organ in a church," says organist Falk Maria
Schlegel.

Moreover, on BIBLE OF THE BEAST Powerwolf fulfilled a dream they had
kept since they started working with choirs on LUPUS DEI. For BIBLE OF
THE BEAST, no less than 25 classically educated singers of the
Musikhochschule des Saarlandes (a national conservatory for classical
music) sang choir arrangements on eight of the songs. "We actually
recorded the choir parts in the studio of the conservatory. I think it
was the first time that these venerable walls had been shaken with
heavy metal," says Charles Greywolf with a smile. "While on LUPUS DEI
it was a bonus we added on top of some songs, this time we already had
choir parts in mind when we wrote the songs, so the dialogue of choir
and Attila works perfectly in songs such as 'St. Satan's Day' or
'Seven Deadly Saints.'"

For the mix of the album, Powerwolf once again worked with the
legendary Fredrik Nordstrom at Studio Fredman (In Flames, HammerFall,
Dimmu Borgir), who seems to have outdone himself this time in setting
up a massive, powerful, yet transparent wall of sound, that perfectly
transports both the heavy edge as well as all the many details
Powerwolf put into this album.

BIBLE OF THE BEAST will be released on April 24th / 27th in Europe!
The limited first edition will be released as a Digi-pak including the
bonus DVD THE WACKEN WORSHIP - LIVE AT WACKEN OPEN AIR 2008!

-Sacred Oath Announce European Release Date Of May 22nd For New Studio
Album SACRED OATH And Distribution Through H'Art Musik/SAOL (CMM
Marketing)

Sacred Oath (who credit their loyal fans in Europe for bringing the
band back to life in 2007) have just signed an exclusive European
distribution/publishing deal with CMM Marketing in Hannover Germany
for their new studio album SACRED OATH.

The album will be released on May 22nd via H'Art Musik/SAOL.

Both the standard AND the deluxe editions of the album will be
marketed throughout Europe by CMM, a company best known for their work
with Iron Maiden, Rob Halford, Yngwie Malmsteen, Overkill, Metal
Church, the Wacken festival, and more.

"Germany has long been at the center of the European metal scene,"
says Rob Thorne, lead singer/guitarist of the band. "To form a
partnership with a company like CMM is a great step forward in making
our music more available over there. Until now, most of our fans have
had to hunt our discs down through mail order services and import
companies. It's amazing how long we survived underground."

Sacred Oath first traveled to Germany in 2007 during the European leg
of their World IndiVisible Tour, where they co-headlined the Keep It
True Festival in Dittigheim with Leatherwolf and Hirax. That
performance was immortalized in the critically acclaimed 'TILL DEATH
DO US PART -- a live CD released in 2008 and recognized by Apple
iTunes as one of 8 Top Live Metal Albums alongside catalog discs from
Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. Exclusive distribution
of that live album is also a part of the agreement with CMM.

Plans are underway for the band to appear in Europe again in 2009. "We
love the fans over there," says Thorne. "They hung in there for a long
time waiting to see us. Many of them brought original pressings of our
debut on vinyl that they had been holding for twenty years, waiting
for us to sign them. It was an honor. I hope we'll be back at some of
the clubs we played last time -- Negasonic in Belgium, Rock City in
Switzerland -- great little clubs!"

Angel Thorne Music will remain the parent label for the band,
organizing and managing all distribution and licensing agreements.
According to Rob, "I've been doing it this way since 2001. It's been a
hard climb, and we're just beginning to see the light of day, but I
wouldn't have it any other way. We're very much the business model of
today's music industry. Sure, we take a lot of risk, but we're not
whoring ourselves out anymore like in the beginning with Mercenary
Records. THAT was a nightmare, and it crippled the band for years."

Sacred Oath recently announced a release date of May 12th for North
America but have not announced a distribution partner yet. For more
information please visit http://www.sacredoath.net/ .

-Overlorde Update

Ovelorde are happy to announce the return of none other than Bobby
"Leather Lungs" Lucas as their new vocalist! Bobby and the guys are
anxious to begin working on material for their follow-up to RETURN OF
THE SNOW GIANT which received unanimous critical acclaim in the
European and North American metal press.

Bobby is quoted as saying:

"I couldn't be happier about returning to Overlorde. Our release,
RETURN OF THE SNOW GIANT, is some of my best work ever and I plan on
giving the next album 110%. I have been through some tough times and
battled illness and tragedy in my life over the past three years, but
I have come through it a much stronger person. I feel better than
ever, and my voice is stronger than it's ever been in the 24 years
that I've been a vocalist! Mark, John, and Dave are like family to me
and it feels like I never left the group. I also want to thank them
and the fans for sticking by me and making it all worthwhile! Cheers
everyone!!!"

Bobby is also currently fronting one of the top Iron Maiden tributes
in U.S. called Sanctuary. For gig dates and where you can see them
perform, go to http://www.ironmaidentribute.com/ , or

expired. The band thanks Manos, Kostas, and the rest of the label for
their faith and support and wishes them the best. Overlorde is now
looking for a new label to release their next CD. Any interested

-Believer Upload Another New Song Off GABRIEL On MySpace!

Reactivated late '80s/early '90s technical thrash metallers Believer
have posted another new song, "Stoned," on their MySpace page. Click
here to check it out: http://www.myspace.com/believerband

Commented drummer Joey Daub: "As we were mixing 'Stoned,' the ripping
old-school death metal riff and locking into a groove felt great until
we added the weird piano section. After repeated listens to this part
during the mix, both Jeff [King; keyboardist/programmer] and Kevin
[Leaman; guitarist] developed throbbing headaches and severe nausea.
It must have been the odd, conflicting timing between the keys,
guitars and drums totally screwing with their inner ears or something.
Obviously Kurt [Bachman; vocalist/gitarist] and I felt great (not sure
what that says about us), but I guess that's what one might call
'feeling the song.' Warning: Listening to this section over and over
again may induce physical illness."

"Stoned" comes off the band's highly anticipated fourth album,
GABRIEL, which will be released in Europe on April 9 / 14.

-PopMatters' Two New Books On Rock 'n' Roll: "We're All Gonna Die So
We May As Well Laugh About It"

"Apocalypse Jukebox: The End Of The World In American Popular Music,"
By David Janssen And Edward Whitelock

Disaster, Revelation And Impossible Salvation -- This Is Rock 'N'
Roll!

and

"Rebels Wit Attitude: Subversive Rock Humorists," By Iain Ellis,
Spotlights Some Seriously Funny People In Pop Music

CHICAGO, IL -- PopMatters, the #1 independent arts and culture site on
the web, is pleased to announce two books on rock 'n' roll which, in
PopMatters' fashion, take a critical look at a very popular topic.

"Apocalypse Jukebox," an examination of American popular music -- from
hellfire hymnals through anarchic rock 'n' roll -- reveals the
nation's collective fixation on disaster, revelation, and impossible
salvation. (March 2009)

"Rebels Wit Attitude," an engaging history of rock music exploring the
serious social impact that pointed rock 'n' roll humor has had on
generations of American youth. (December 2008)

**Co-published with Soft Skull Press as part of the PopMatters Books
Series**

"Apocalypse Jukebox"

For a cultural movement that has no definite beginning, the sense of
an ending is never very far below the surface of rock and roll music
and lyrics. American popular music has always been shaped by an
apocalyptic world view.

In "Apocalypse Jukebox," Edward J. Whitelock and David A. Janssen
trace the influence of apocalypticism upon the development of American
popular music, with the premise that America itself can be fruitfully
understood, defined, explicated, and sung in apocalyptic terms.

They examine the diversity of apocalyptic influences within American
recorded music spanning the 1920s through the present, either as a
spiritual revelation tied to the Second Coming of Christ or as a
cataclysmic but secular end of the world through nuclear or natural
disaster, focusing in particular upon a number of influential
performers including Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, John Coltrane, Devo,
R.E.M., Sleater/Kinney, and Green Day. In doing so, they reveal
apocalypse as a permanent and central part of the American character.

Read one of three excerpts on PopMatters here:

n-and-impossible-salvation/

Advance Praise for "Apocalypse Jukebox"

"From a terrifying 1833 meteor shower through the atomic bombings of
1945 and the attacks of September 11, 2001, U.S. cultural creators
have often viewed the times through an apocalyptic lens. In this
freewheeling and vigorously personal book, David Janssen and Edward J.
Whitelock explore the pervasiveness of apocalyptic themes in American
popular music, from gospel, folk, and country to jazz, rock & roll,
and beyond. Performers as diverse as Presley, Coltrane, Dylan, Devo,
and R.E.M. receive fresh new interpretations. 'Apocalyptic Jukebox'
should have broad appeal." -- Paul Boyer, author of "When Time Shall
Be No More"

"Outstanding . . . a noteworthy achievement, studded with aphorisms,
drawing on interesting parallels in other fields of endeavor when
appropriate, and filled with canny, sympathetic evaluations of the
musicians they profile." -- The Brooklyn Rail

"Rebels Wit Attitude"

In "Rebels Wit Attitude," music writer and professor Iain Ellis throws
a spotlight on the history of humor as a weapon of anti-establishment
rebellion by paying tribute to great rebel humorists in American rock
history and investigating comedy and laughter as catalysts and
expressive forces in these artists' work. The performers who are the
subject of Ellis's study are not merely funny people -- they are those
whose art exudes defiance and resistance, whether aimed at social
structures and mores, political systems, aesthetic practices, or the
music industry itself. In this study of rock's impact on youth through
the decades, Ellis proves that the most subversive rock humorists
serve as the conscience of our culture. They chastise pretensions,
satirize hypocrisy, and pour scorn on power, corruption, and lies.

Discussing the work of iconic figures as diverse as Chuck Berry, Bob
Dylan, Lou Reed, the Ramones, the Talking Heads, the Beastie Boys,
Missy Elliott, and Madonna, Ellis examines the nature of the rock
humorist, asking why and in what ways each performer uses humor as a
weapon of resistance. While their lyrics constitute Ellis' primary
field of analysis, his exploration moves into a discussion and
interpretation of image, performance, product, and musical content.

Rock music has been the principle outlet of youth rebellion for over
half a century, and though these rock rebels have been idolized and
written about extensively, their humor -- which has invariably been
the bullet in the gun of subversive performers -- has never been the
main focus. In "Rebels Wit Attitude" (Soft Skull Press / Counterpoint;
Trade Paper; December 2008; $15.95; 978-1-59376-206-3), Iain Ellis
celebrates and scrutinizes the humor, asks what it consists of, how it
manifests itself, what it targets, and what effect it has had on
generations of fans.

Read one of three excerpts on PopMatters here:
http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/66327-rebels-wit-attitude-nirvana/

Listen to the author on WNYC's "Soundcheck" here:
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/soundcheck/episodes/2009/01/22

Praise for "Rebels Wit Attitude"

"A brainy, fun, and thought-provoking rollick through the last fifty
years of music history. . . . What emerges is a greater understanding
of the individual musicians and writers as more than enthralling
entertainers and talented instrumentalists, but also as commentators
on the ever-changing social and political landscape of the modern
world." -- ForeWord Magazine

"...'Rebels' is a comprehensive survey of subversive humor in American
rock, devoting substantial attention to both the obvious and the not-
so-obvious purveyors of the genre." -- John S. Hall, King Missile

"A masterpiece of cultural criticism. Ellis does for rock music what
Robert Hughes did for modern art -- shows how the basic move is to
subvert something. From Big Mama Thornton to Eminem, Ellis analyzes
hundreds of performers, songs, and songwriters, showing how smart-ass
humor grounded their appeal. If you've always wondered what Little
Richard meant when he sang 'A-wop-bop-alu-bop-a-wop-bam-boom,' you
need to read this book." -- John Morreall, author of "Taking Laughter
Seriously," "The Philosophy Of Laughter and Humor," and "Humor Works"

"A fascinating exploration . . . aptly illustrates the rock musician's
dual role as both critic and entertainer, examining the power dynamics
among artists, audiences, industries, and the culture at large." --
Joanne Gilbert, author of "Performing Marginality"

About the Authors:

Edward Whitelock spent most of 1978 hoarding his grandmother's meds in
preparation for suicide. Why? The usual story: he was a poor, clumsy,
socially awkward kid whose daily life was comprised of the slow,
lonely, seemingly unending torture of the middle-school outcast. When
Devo appeared on "Saturday Night Live," everything changed; the future
was revealed: The geeks would inherit the Earth. He is now a Full
Professor of English at Gordon College. He has published poems in over
a dozen literary journals as well as numerous articles in professional
journals and anthologies.

David Janssen grew up in the mountains of the Northwest with blisters
on his fingers resulting from his religious devotion to a cheap
acoustic guitar. Told in a dream that he would be the punk Bob Dylan,
he ardently pursued his destiny into twenty-something adulthood until
his guitar and amp were stolen, which he read as a providential sign
to enroll in graduate school. He is now an Associate Professor of
English at Gordon College and associate editor for Studies in Popular
Culture.

Iain Ellis' writing and scholarly interests crystallized with the
arrival of the punk rock movement in 1977, when he was 14-years-old
and living in London's sleepy outer suburbs. Punk introduced him not
only to the thrills that great rock music can instill, but also to
political dissent, subversive humor, and a cultural awareness of the
scope and possibilities of artistic expression. These burgeoning
interests coalesced into a life engagement with Cultural Studies at
universities in both the U.K. and the U.S., and Ellis wrote his
American Studies Ph.D. dissertation on punk culture. He currently
teaches in the English Department at the University of Kansas and
writes regular columns on "Alternative Rock Cultures" and "Subversive
Rock Humor" for PopMatters.

-Susperia: Singer's Operation A Success Despite Further Complications

OSLO, NORWAY -- Despite further complications Susperia singer Athera
(Pal Mathiesen) successfully underwent open heart surgery on Monday
March 16th 2009 at Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Oslo, Norway.
Originally scheduled to have a triple bypass operation, surgeons
discovered further problems which resulted in the vocalist also having
a main artery -- which previously ran to his lungs -- connected
directly to his heart. Athera will remain in hospital to recuperate
and has been advised by doctors that full recovery will take between
three and five months.

Still in some agony from his ordeal and in reflective mood, Athera
said: "Wow -- Well what happened there?! It looks like this time my
name wasn't on the guest list at the pearly gates or the other place
down below. I got through the surgery and I'm now back in the regional
hospital after five days at the specialist heart clinic. Here in my
hospital bed I'm contemplating the enormity of what happened -- the
what ifs and the what might have been. I'm in agony but the strong
medication helps. It was a heavy operation having my body parts re-
arranged -- If a musician ever needed a 'TUNE UP,' I hope this was it.
There are some tough times ahead but I will get there in the end."

Commenting further on the messages of support and with an eye on the
future he added: "I'm truly amazed at people's humanity at times like
this, with all the goodwill messages I've been getting from friends
and strangers. Once again the metal community comes through with
flying colors, putting their prejudices aside to come together as one.
Respect to those who took the time to send messages of support. It's
heart-warming to get messages from metalheads who don't have the time
of day for my band yet still find the time to send a message. You all
helped me get through this, and strengthened my metal heart! I will be
out of the game for a while till my chest bones completely heal and I
can sing fully again. I wish my boys a good trip round the U.K. in May
on the tour, and am confident they will bring along a singer that will
make the show worth while for you. I wish I could be there."

As previously reported, Susperia have confirmed the postponement of
Norwegian dates, which were set for April '09. Their U.K. tour in May
with Breed 77 will go ahead at the insistence of Athera himself,
having urged the band not to let their U.K. fans down and to look at
finding a replacement vocalist.

The release of Susperia's next studio album is set for early summer as
planned, through Candlelight Records. Full details will be announced
shortly.

-Regain Records Signs NYHC Veterans Merauder

Regain Records is very proud to announce the signing of NYHC veterans
Merauder! Jorge Rosado (vocals) has issued the following statement:
"Merauder, the metalcore kings and creators, are teaming up with
Regain Records to bring you the long awaited album titled GOD IS I.
This is one of the most important and brutal records we've ever worked
on and it's all worth it!!! Come out and support us on tour with The
Haunted."

The most focused recording since the band's classic album MASTER
KILLER, GOD IS I finds Merauder in perfect shape. Melding the band's
roots with modern bite, the intent becomes immediately clear within
seconds of the album's sucker punch opening riff; "Until" hones in on
its listener and the chase begins. Runaway freight train grooves, mid-
pace stomps, seething gang vocals and death metal drenched riffs all
find themselves vying for supremacy amidst their patented NYHC
delivery.

GOD IS I is set for release on Regain Records June 19th, 2009.

See Merauder on the road now on their way out to team up with The

-Mark Morton's latest article at Heavy Metal Examiner is a report and
commentary on Metallica's "surprise" show at the SXSW festival last
Friday. Sounds like the gig was just a glorified plug for the "Guitar
Hero: Metallica" video game, which, as Morton intimates, probably
doesn't really need a whole lot of extra hype. I'd have to agree.

-My 4-year-old is suddenly into classical music. When we're driving
around it's *so* funny to hear that little voice coming from the back
seat, "Daddy, can you put on some classical music please?" We've been
listening to a local radio station as well as CDs with Beethoven,
Handel, and Bach, but after a while I know we'll be rocking out with
Yngwie, old Accept, and endless repetitions of Savatage's "Prelude To
Madness."

-Cool to hear about the Fifth Angel reunion. I always liked that band.
I also remember the time, perhaps around 1993, when I'd just found
both of their albums on vinyl in a cut-out bin, and I had them with me
when I visited my grandma. I remember her looking at the spooky,
gothic cover art a little suspiciously. :)

-Egads... Have you seen the commercials for "Osbournes Reloaded,"
which debuts next Tuesday (March 31) on Fox TV? It's really true...
Ozzy is part of a TV variety show. Please don't give Gene Simmons any
ideas.

-What happened with Thomen Stauch leaving Savage Circus? Wasn't that
*his* band? Did he get the Vinnie Vincent treatment?

-I can't believe a new Great White studio album snuck out with me not
hearing a single peep until now.

-New Queensryche next week, and it bugs me that I'm still unsure if
this news excites me.

-We're all going to the Corey Feldman show, right?

-In my current playlist: Halford - RESURRECTION - REMASTERED (Metal
God Entertainment), Katra - BEAST WITHIN (Napalm Records), Joetown -
PILLS AND AMMO (Joetown Records), Isole - SILENT RUINS (Napalm

CARBON 9 - THE BULL (A-/B+) WorldSound Music, 2009

I think one of the reasons I never became a huge fan of
Industrial-styled metal was because of the time it rose to prominence
in the mainstream; around the period when traditional metal was about
as welcome as a fox in the hen house bands such as Nine Inch Nails,
White Zombie and Marilyn Manson were taking over video and radio,
seeming to join Grunge in an effort to displace all the music I
treasured. Actually I did enjoy some of it, finding Trent Reznor's
early work with NIN interesting and Ministry's sonic assault quite
authentic. Now with some distance from those days of alternative
overload I thought it reasonable to give this style another chance to
impress, and it has in the form of an exciting new outfit from L.A.
known as Carbon 9. While drawing inspiration from several of the bands
just mentioned, Carbon 9 successfully carve out their own approach on
THE BULL, mixing in tribal, hard rock and electronic influences with a
healthy degree of melody to create a cogent listening experience. Try
and see if you can keep from headbanging to explosive, infectious
anthems such as "Crawling Over Me," "Somebody Like Me," "Butterflies
In My Head" or "Lonely In Love." A sure favorite for me is the title
cut, its brooding verse leading to a great emotionally charged chorus.
Excellent production, cool lyrics, and spirited performances make THE
BULL one you'll find yourself returning to frequently, and that's
probably the best recommendation I could give it...

JADED HEART - SINISTER MIND (C) Locomotive Records, 2008

Germany-based Jaded Heart has been around since 1990, but the music on
their eighth CD has a distinct '80s style. There have been several
lineup changes over the years, so for those out of the loop, currently
playing on this CD are bassist Michael Muller, Axel Kruse on drums,
and Peter Ostros on lead guitar. Johan Fahlberg has been their lead
vocalist since 2004 and is a great fit for the band. Curiously enough,
a little digging reveals that their keyboard player, Henning Wanner,
also moonlights in the new formation of '80s band White Lion. The band
lists a varied group of musicians as influences: Savatage, Kiss, Iron
Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Motley Crue, and Pantera, but
SINISTER MIND is all '80s flashback. While the title track, "Hero,"
"Always On My Mind," and "Heavenly Devotion" are the strongest songs
in the collection, all of these songs will remind you of songs from
'80s film soundtracks. They will leave you wondering if you have heard
the songs before; a review of the related Web sites (and admittedly,
imdb.com) reveals no such connection. The talent is here: strong
beats, catchy hooks, and easy-to-learn choruses -- you won't find much
fault with any of that. What is disappointing on this CD is the
repetition. After repeated plays, I found it hard to determine which
song I was listening to unless I was hearing the chorus specifically.
After trying to rate the songs track by track, I found my attention
diverted easily over much of the disc and all of my ratings were in
the 4-7 range (with a score of 10 given to a great song). Jaded Heart
is touring Europe this year and may be better live, pulling their set
list over their whole catalogue. If you like the style and want little
variety, this CD is for you, but I'm curious to see if their next
release shows more versatility.

STRINGS 24 (B+) Lion Music, 2009

If you've ever seen a G3 performance I'm sure you remember the
legendary jam at the end of the show, where all three featured
guitarists come together for some truly incendiary trade-off solos;
now imagine what the results would be if talents of this magnitude
assembled for an album of original material and you'll have some idea
of what Strings 24 is all about. Comprised of ace guitarists Frank
Caruso, Stefano Xotta and Gianluca Ferro, the project features the
three players contributing compositions and alternating solos ranging
from sensitive melodicism to all-out shred. The guys all play eight-
string guitars, hence the title (3X8=24, geddit?), and they definitely
know their way around all that steel, with amazing chops displayed on
tracks such as the fusion-y "Outraged Dimensions," metal charger
"Running In The Wind," smoldering "Remember Blues," and shred-worthy
rocker "Psychedelic." Yeah, the compositions are mainly designed to
show off the talents of these virtuosos and introduce them to the
guitar hero community but they do keep your interest long enough for
the pyrotechnics, which are often stunning. Bottom line is these boys
are good, and with some maturity could give elder statesmen like Vai
and Satriani a run for their money...
