-Queensryche Is Xbox Artist Of The Month For April

Xbox Live Marketplace Is Exclusive Retailer For "If I Were King" Video

New Album AMERICAN SOLDIER Now Available From Atco/Rhino; U.S. Tour To
Begin April 16 In Seattle

LOS ANGELES -- Queensryche has been selected as "Xbox Artist Of The
Month" for April to coincide with the release of their new album
AMERICAN SOLDIER. Starting today, the Xbox LIVE Marketplace will be
the exclusive retailer for the band's new video "If I Were King." Xbox
LIVE users can now purchase the video for a cost of 160 Microsoft
points. Xbox LIVE users can also watch an exclusive free video clip of
the recording session of "Sliver" featuring lead singer Geoff Tate and
guest vocalist and soldier A.J. Fratto.

On April 13, just days before the kickoff of the AMERICAN SOLDIER
tour, Tate and guitarist Michael Wilton will take part in a Xbox "Game
With Fame," where Xbox LIVE users can play against the band members.
Tate will be taking on competitors in "NASCAR 09" and Wilton will be
squaring off against users on "Halo 3." The Queensryche "Game With
Fame" will take place on April 13 between 1 - 3 p.m. PT. Visit
http://www.xbox.com/gwfqueensryche for more details.

AMERICAN SOLDIER features a dozen songs inspired by numerous
interviews with veterans conducted by Tate, who was intent on telling
their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served
in various conflicts -- from World War II to Iraq -- Tate turned their
firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical
examination of war from the soldier's perspective.

Queensryche will launch an extensive tour of the U.S. on April 16 at
the Snoqualmie Casino outside of the band's hometown of Seattle. The
shows will be presented in three suites, with the band performing sets
from AMERICAN SOLDIER, RAGE FOR ORDER, and EMPIRE.

-Michael Schenker Releases New CD / Vinyl And Reschedules IN THE MIDST
OF BEAUTY Tour Dates

The German Hard Rock Guitar Virtuoso Returns To America With GIPSY
LADY and His Highly-Skilled Group Of Musicians

GIPSY LADY, the first album from the Michael Schenker-Gary Barden
Acoustic Project, will be available on CD and vinyl on May 19 (just
before the U.S. tour begins). Gary Barden's vocals give the cleverly
arranged songs just the touch of soul they need for full impact... The
long-term Schenker collaborator wrote the lyrics virtually off the top
of his head. Also on board is Michael Voss, an experienced producer
and second guitarist, who also provides background vocals. Kai
Luennemann on percussion completes the team.

With such a distinctive, soft sound from Michael Schenker's guitar,
this album distinguishes itself easily. In this way, using a flamenco
guitar with castanets in "Dance Lady Gipsy" conjures up a hot-blooded
gipsy dancing before your eyes, while the fiddle and flutes in "Fight
For Freedom" transport you to beautiful Ireland. The new album from
Michael Schenker-Gary Barden Acoustic Project is more than an acoustic
album; it demonstrates all Michael Schenker's expertise as a guitarist
and songwriter.

Album Info and Hi-Res Cover Art:
http://mvdb2b.com/item.php?s=INAK9091CD

The live Michael Schenker experience will come to fruition through the
IN THE MIDST OF BEAUTY world tour headed for the United States .

The lineup for the U.S. Tour is:

Michael Schenker - Guitars
Gary Barden - Vocals
Chris Slade - Drums
Wayne Findlay - Guitar & Keyboards
Robbie Crane - Bass

The tour begins on Tuesday, June 9th in Hollywood:

06-09 - Key Club - Hollywood, CA
06-10 - Fat Cat - Modesto, CA
06-12 - Canyon Club - Agoura Hills, CA
06-16 - Club 101 - El Paso, TX
06-18 - Pontiac Garage - Dallas, TX
06-19 - House Of Blues - Houston, TX
06-20 - Camargo Park - San Antonio, TX
06-21 - Aces - Austin, TX
06-24 - Blender Theater at Gramercy - New York, NY
06-25 - Jaxx - Springfield, VA
06-30 - Pops - Sauget, IL
07-03 - Vinnies - Concord, CA
07-04 - 19 Broadway - Fairfax, CA
07-07 - Element - Victoria, BC
07-08 - Studio 7 - Seattle, WA
07-10 - Brixton - Redondo Beach, CA
07-11 - Galaxy - Theater Santa Ana, CA

Schenker is truly a legend... From helping form the Scorpions to his
stint with UFO, his guitar prowess has been electrifying from the
beginning. 2008's IN THE MIDST OF BEAUTY perfectly captures the MSG
aesthetic and mystique, which makes sense as 4/5ths of the original
MSG are back in the fold!

Singer Gary Barden and the rest of the band make this one of their
best (and most highly anticipated) recordings and a return to classic
MSG form. Pushing the boundaries of hard rock, heavy metal and blues
rock to the limits which his old fans love and which will impress a
wide range of new fans.

IN THE MIDST OF BEAUTY was the first runner-up for Best Metal Album of
2008 on IGN.com -- http://bestof.ign.com/2008/music/4.html

"...Rock and roll with a certified master guitarist."
- Ralph Greco, VINTAGE ROCK

"Every song is well written, every band member's performance is solid,
and the axework is pure classic Schenker."
- Steve Angulo, HEAVY METAL ADDICTION

"Some of the best work Schenker has done in years."
- Allan Athans, THE RIGHT TO ROCK

-Available Now! Duff McKagan's Loaded - SICK

There are few individuals around today that exemplify the term "idol"
or "legend," but one of Seattle's own stands tall amongst this chosen
minority. This person is Duff McKagan and anybody would be hard
pressed to dispute that he is the epitome of a hard rock icon. At the
early age of 19 he embarked to Los Angeles with only one goal in mind:
to become a star. Now over 20 years later the ex-Guns N' Roses and
current Velvet Revolver bassist has carved out a place in rock n' roll
history selling millions of albums and touring the world multiple

However, with his latest, appropriately titled project, Duff McKagan's
Loaded, he gets a chance to further show his songwriting prowess and
versatility assuming the role of vocalist/ guitarist. This is an all

-Jeff Scott Soto Makes A BEAUTIFUL MESS

TRENTON, N.J. -- Jeff Scott Soto returns with this first new album in
four years, BEAUTIFUL MESS.

Available April 7 in the U.S. on Frontiers Records, BEAUTIFUL MESS is
different direction for the soulful vocalist, who earned a reputation
as one of the finest singers in melodic rock/metal through his work
with Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and
Journey. For this record, Soto is using the moniker JSS, the trademark
initials his diehard fans associate with him, to separate BEAUTIFUL
MESS from his three previous solo albums.

"This is the album I always wanted to make," he said. "The last one,
LOST IN THE TRANSLATION, was more rock and in-your-face. BEAUTIFUL
MESS is all about songs and the singer, not guitar solos and big
riffs. The songs on BEAUTIFUL MESS are also more soul and R&B laced,
as well. I wanted the diversity it has but I didn't want it to sound
confusing to old fans while I am trying to gain new ones."

Soto began gathering material for BEAUTIFUL MESS in 2005 as the tour
for LOST IN THE TRANSLATION was winding down. He took a break to
record a new Talisman record, then got further sidetracked when
Journey came knocking. After touring with the rock legends, Soto
managed to get into the studio to record BEAUTIFUL MESS, then hit the
road with Trans-Siberian Orchestra for its 2008 holiday season tour.

Soto's chaotic life and work schedule were the inspiration for the new
album's title. "My life, my career, this album... is a beautiful
mess," he said. "I have recently gone through a divorce, which is
always messy, but in the end beautiful things came out of our lives.
My career has always been a bit messy -- am I a rock singer, pop
singer, soul singer? But it is beautiful that I can mix all of them to
one. This album has a messy mix of different sounds, but in the end,
it fits together beautifully!"

-Saga: New Album Available

For months, thousands of Saga fans have been asking themselves
anxiously: how will the band sound after vocalist Michael Sadler's
departure? Before going into any more detail, let's answer the big
question: on their latest album, THE HUMAN CONDITION, Saga still sound
unmistakably like Saga but with a big dash freshness. The essential
elements of the sound which the band has continuously developed over
decades, their rocking attitude, haunting melodies, virtuoso solo
passages and intelligent arrangements, haven't changed one bit in
2009. And what is more: the band members, Ian Crichton (guitar), Jim
Crichton (bass, keyboards) and Jim Gilmour (keyboards) have used the
recent lineup change for an artistic evolution of their expressive
means. To cut a long story short: THE HUMAN CONDITION is 100% Saga,
and much more.

Let's travel back in time: autumn 2007 saw founder member Michael
Sadler leave the band to set off to pastures new. No farewell in
anger, no personal or musical differences -- as we have frequently
seen in other bands -- but an extremely amicable separation from a
musician who is looking for new challenges, privately as well as
artistically. For the remaining musicians, Sadler's departure never
called into question the group's existence. Saga immediately started a
global search for a new front man and struck lucky in January 2008
when they came across Rob Moratti, until that time vocalist with the
Canadian act, Final Frontier.

With Moratti as their new band member, Saga got together and arranged
the material they had been individually writing for six months. THE
HUMAN CONDITION was produced by Saga and mixed by Pat Regan at the
Sound Image studios in Van Nuys, California, in February 2009. The
result is a spirited recording with nine versatile numbers which
redefine the borderline between rock music and progressive attitudes.
THE HUMAN CONDITION features vocal melodies consisting of several
voices, Crichton's unmistakable staccato guitars and sweeping solo
passages which extend into the spheres of fusion and jazz. THE HUMAN
CONDITION substantiates the good news about Saga's unaltered sound:
they are continuing their great career and are set to present many
more examples of their great creative power.

New From Heart Of Steel (Italy)

Betoken - VENOM EMPIRE (2009)

VENOM EMPIRE is the new and fourth album for these Italian Power
metallers and it will feature 13 powerful tracks, influenced by the
Classic U.S. Power Metal and by bands like Queensryche (OPERATION:
MINDCRIME / EMPIRE eras) and Vicious Rumors with some harmonies and
technical guitar parts that might recall mighty Megadeth.

Burner - RESURRECTION (2009)

The album has been recorded between 2006 and 2008 and it contains
songs written in a time period spanning from 1984 to 2007, but
sounding in a pure traditional '80s NWOBHM style (with a sound that
might recall bands like Blitzkrieg and Diamond Head).

Fallen Silver - BLOOD IN BLUE EYES (2009)

These five guys from Sydney, Australia play Classic Hard Rock full of
kick-arse riffs, a fat rhythm section and some dirty yet still very
melodic vocals, not too far from the "classics" AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and
Black Crowes, with the energy of their country-mates Airbourne, and
some '80s Street Rock influences (Junkyard/Bang Tango/ L.A.Guns).

Ivory - TIME FOR REVENGE (2009)

Great Melodic / Power Metal debut for this five-piece coming from
Italy. Their style is very personal, combining powerful riffs and
double-bass song structures, in the melodic Power Metal style, with
catchy vocal harmonies (close to the classic Melodic Hard Rock) and
some deluxe arrangements influenced by Progressive Rock/Metal.

Serena Rock Band - ROLLING ON THE ROAD (2009)

Second NEVER-released album recorded in 1991 for this Italian Hard
Rock band featuring Alex De Rosso (Dokken, Dark Lord, Headrush, etc.)
on guitar and Paolo Muffato (Dark Lord) on bass.

Great production (the recording budget was huge, back then!), full-
color 16-page booklet, all lyrics included plus many band pics and a
band biography. Fantastic Class/Melodic Rock a la David Lee Roth
(SKYSCRAPER era)/Dokken!!!

Lyin' Rampant - UP AND CUMIN' (2009)

CD reissue, re-mastered with bonus tracks, of this U.K.-based '80s
melodic heavy rock band, early Def Leopard style.

-Sonata Arctica: Keyboardist Checks In

Keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg of the Finnish melodic metal band
Sonata Arctica has issued the following update:

"So far we have about half of the new Sonata Arctica record in shape,
so we're missing some songs, as usual. In April we start recording,
and, as before, me and Tony are working at our home studios while the
other guys record at more 'professional' studios, and by the end of
May everything should be recorded and we're ready to mix and master. I
know a lot of you are really eager to hear what the album sounds like
and probably the speculations have already started on the forums, etc.
I can only say that it's a bit darker and maybe not so complex as
UNIA. Nevertheless, it's definitely not a back-to-the-roots album with
fast power metal. All the trademark Sonata stuff is on there, solos,
lots of singing some slower songs. Actually, I can hardly wait to hear
how it turns out myself.

"Next fall we start to tour again, it will once again be a massive
effort and going all over the world... at least once. We'll be
starting the world tour in... sh*t, I can't say that yet. Anyway,
there'll be a lot of new places and even more of places we've already
been to."

The record is due in September 2009 via Nuclear Blast Records.

-Sensory Records To Release Sophomore Delain Album

The much anticipated second album from Delain is finally here. It is
fascinating to witness how the band has evolved! Originally conceived
by Within Temptation keyboard player Martijn Westerholt as a studio
project, the success of the debut album LUCIDITY tipped his hand and
Delain has since evolved into a full blown active band. With Charlotte
Wessels on vocals, Ronald Landa on guitar and grunt vocals, Sun Caged
bassist Rob Vander Loo, and Sander Zoer on drums, Delain took the
Netherlands by storm. The band has toured extensively throughout
Europe, opening for many acts including sister band Within Temptation,
and appeared at many festivals. Ultimately they became a headliner in
their own right. With that behind them they headed into the studio to
create their sophomore opus, APRIL RAIN.

Licensed to Sensory Records (with U.S. distribution through Ryko/
Canadian distribution thorough Sonic Unyon) from Roadrunner Records
who released the album in Europe, APRIL RAIN is cut from similar cloth
from LUCIDITY but different enough to hear the evolution mentioned
above. Instead of the multiple guests that were featured on LUCIDITY,
APRIL RAIN does benefit from the return of Nightwish bassist Marco
Hietala who sings male vocals on two tracks, as well as world renowned
cellist Maria Ahn.

Martijin Westholt is clearly at the helm -- the big symphonic sound is
still in place. Those elements that he brought to Within Temptation
are clearly evident. There is a difference though... perhaps because
of Jacob Hansen's mix the sound is more focused and even grittier,
crunchier (thank you Mr. Landa). Songs tend to be on the shorter side
but they slam harder. Having been familiar with Rob Van Der Loo's
intense bass work with Sun Caged its great to see him bring that
progressive element to the rhythm section. Charlotte Wessels is young
but has developed into the perfect voice and face for Delain.

The comparisons to Within Temptation will continue but it's obvious
that Delain has come up with their own sound that stands on its own.
APRIL RAIN is THE symphonic gothic metal album of 2009. The album
debuted this week on the Dutch Top 100 album charts at #14, and
debuted at #1 on the Dutch Alternative Charts. The band is currently
on tour in Europe as direct support for Kamelot, which takes them
immediately into their headlining tour. Through the kindness of
Roadrunner NL we are able to offer the special limited edition digi-
pak edition, with the exclusive bonus track "Come Closer."

The official North American release date is June 30, 2009.

-Mad Margritt News

Mad Margritt will be performing Saturday, July 4th at the Muscle
Racing Festival in Sarasota, Florida along with BulletBoys and Pretty
Boy Floyd!! Over 10,000 people attended last year's event featuring
L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat, Bang Tango & Mad Margritt. This year is
expected to be even bigger & better!!

More details to be announced soon!!!

The following is an interview with Mad Margritt singer Eddie Smith &
guitarist Scott Banks. It appeared this week on the Web site Hair
Metal Mansion.

I am proud to present to you another EXCLUSIVE Hair Metal Mansion
interview! I got the chance to talk with Mad Margritt front man, Eddie
Smith and guitarist Scott Banks! If you don't know Mad Margitt... you
should! Because they are a great band that is keeping real rock and
metal alive! A lot of their influence comes from the rock and metal
bands of the '80s. I would compare their sound to Bach-era Skid Row!
They've played and toured with a number of bands... such as; Kiss,
Poison, Cinderella, Queensryche, Skid Row, Ratt and MANY others! They
are now signed with Perris Records.

Read the interview to find out more about them!

Hair Metal Mansion: This is for both of you. Were either of you
involved with any other bands/projects prior to Mad Margritt?

Eddie: I played in a few bands down in South Florida before forming
Mad Margritt. One was called the Strangles Of Bombay. We were kind of
a cross between Motley Crue and Twisted Sister. Another band I was in
was called Sanction. We were together about three years and then me
and the bass player broke off to form Mad Margritt.

Scott: I have been in several other bands/projects over the years,
worked as a sound engineer in a few studios, a great learning
experience for what we do now.

HMM: Who are some of your major influences?

Scott: I have a variety of influences, that vary from all types of
music, but Blue Murder, King's X, Ozzy, just to name a few.

Eddie: At first I was really into all the classic rock stuff
(Zeppelin, Sabbath, Kiss, AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith), then I
started getting into all the '80s rock and metal. I wasn't just into
one aspect of the '80s, I loved all of it. Everything from the glam
stuff (Poison, Cinderella, Def Leppard) to the harder stuff (Motley
Crue, Skid Row, Guns N' Roses) and of course the metal stuff (Iron
Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy).

HMM: How and when did Mad Margritt first form?

Eddie: The band was formed in the mid '90s down in South Florida but
we relocated to Atlanta, Georgia a few years later. We were sick of
all the grunge and alternative crap that was going on at the time. We
wanted to put together a band that played high energy, in your face
rock and metal.

HMM: In July of 1999, you were signed by Delinquent Records... and
released your first full-length album, IN THE NAME OF ROCK. To go
along with that, you guys went on your first U.S. tour and opened for
bands like Ratt, Cinderella, Great White, Warrant, Slaughter, Quiet
Riot, BulletBoys, Skid Row, Tesla, Every Mother's Nightmare and Pretty
Boy Floyd. Tell me a little bit about that album and what it was like
during that time.

Eddie: It was a really exciting time for us. After the CD came out, we
received write-ups in all the major magazines including my favorite
magazine at the time, Metal Edge. Going out on tour was really cool. I
had never been on the road before so it was awesome to go out and play
all these places that I had never been to. I can't even put into words
how cool it was to open up shows for bands like Cinderella and Quiet
Riot. I think the first big band we ever opened up for was Ratt. My
heart was beating out of my chest the whole time. It was such an
incredible high and a total adrenaline rush. I still get excited like
that every time we do a big show, there's no better feeling than
rocking out in front of thousands of screaming fans!

HMM: Mad Margritt released an album in 2002 called, NEW SENSATION.
Now, it also featured legendary vocalist, Derek St. Holmes (Ted
Nugent/Michael Schenker) on one track as well. What was it like to
work with Derek and how did it come about exactly?

Eddie: He's really a cool guy and can sing his *ss off. He sounds even
better now then he did 30 years ago. The Ted Nugent band was one of
the first hard rock bands I ever got into so having the guy who sang
"Stranglehold" in the studio with us recording one of our songs was
surreal.

HMM: Mad Margritt is now signed with Perris Records... how did that
come about?

Eddie: We were playing at a place called Pink E's in Las Vegas and Tom
Mathers (President of Perris Records) pulled me aside after the show.
We talked for a few hours and eventually ended up signing a deal with
them a few months later.

HMM: The latest Mad Margritt album, ANIMAL, was released back in 2007.
I have to say that I think that it's a pheneomenal disc. I look
forward to featuring songs from it on my show! Tell me about that
album.

Eddie: I think ANIMAL is definitely the best CD that we have ever put
out. It really captures all aspects of the band. There are some real
heavy songs, some melodic songs and some straight ahead rockers.

Scott: This record was something different for all of us, we each
brought something different to it, that's why it's such a departure
from anything else we have done. The entire record is self-written,
self-produced, and we recorded it ourselves, so we had 100% control of
the sound! We are very proud of this new direction.

HMM: What's your favorite Mad Margritt song to play live?

Eddie: I love every song on the CD so picking only one song is really
hard. My adrenaline is usually pumping pretty hard when were onstage
so I'll have to go with one of the more aggressive ones like "Animal"
or "Loaded Gun."

Scott: Each song brings out a different emotion for me to play, like
"Ruling Me" is fun and party-like, whereas "Time" or "Animal" are
heavy and aggressive, so I can't say that I have a favorite.

HMM: Out of all the bands you guys have toured and played with, who
were the coolest?

Eddie: We've always gotten along really well with all the bands we've
played with. Some of them like to hang out and socialize a little more
then others but they all have been really cool with us.

HMM: Scott, word has it that you actually travelled with the band
Stryper back in the day... tell me about that.

Scott: Ok, It wasn't the yellow/black Stryper that everyone thinks of.
It was called King James with Robert Sweet and Oz Fox, but Oz couldn't
make the tour to Norway/Sweeden, so they asked me to fill in. I was
pretty young, it was a chance to see a part of the world that I hadn't
seen before, and a great opportunity to play with those guys.

HMM: Eddie, you are also "Rocknation TV's" latest VJ. "Rocknation TV"
is a weekly hard rock/metal video show that airs in over 234 cities
nationwide. Tell me about that.

Eddie: "Rocknation TV" is a 30 minute hard rock / heavy metal video
show. It's kind of like the old "Headbanger's Ball" on MTV. They
started playing our video for the song "Loaded Gun" about a year ago
and apparently it got a lot of positive feedback. The producer of the
show contacted me and said people were really responding to the video.
He asked if I would like to shoot a few promo spots to help promote
the show. After I finished the shoot, he told me that he liked the way
I came across on camera and asked if I wanted to be a VJ on the show.
I stay really busy with Mad Margritt but I thought it would be a
really cool thing to do so I'm trying to fit it into my schedule
whenever I can. So far I've done an interview with Buckcherry and a
few intros and IDs. It's been pretty cool so far, I'm looking forward
to doing some more stuff with them.

HMM: Mad Margritt performed at the South Texas Rock Fest last year...
alongside bands like Queensryche, Dokken, Skid Row, Tesla and many
more! How did that go and what was it like?

Eddie: It was insane! We had such a blast out there and the crowd was
incredible. The Texas heat was pretty brutal but other than that it
was awesome!!

HMM: What has been the most memorable highlight of your career so far?

Eddie: I just feel really fortunate to be able to play to play music
for a living. Every night that we perform is a highlight!

Scott: I can't talk about my favorite highlights, they're on film!!!

HMM: What's on the horizon for Mad Margritt?

Eddie: We're gonna start working on a new CD after the summer is over.
We've already started working on a few songs and so far it's coming
along great. I'm real excited about the direction we are going with
the songwriting. It's gonna be similar to the ANIMAL CD but a lot more
intense. We're gonna turn everything up a notch and put out a CD that
will melt your speakers!!

I just want to thank both Eddie and Scott for taking the time out to
do the interview! It was a real honor for me. I want to wish them and
all of Mad Margritt nothing but the best!

-So I got the press release on the new acoustic project from Michael
Schenker and Gary Barden, and did a little research online. In my
cyber travels I came accross some Web site where a dude commented that
Schenker was once a member of Manowar. Wha...???

-Jack Black guested on the kids TV show "Yo Gabba Gabba!" last week.
The episode was called "New Friends." If you've got TiVo, look for a
repeat and check it out -- pretty wacky stuff. There was even some
screamin' rock guitar in the musical parts. :)

-AC/DC is still playing venues of that size? God bless 'em.

-In my current playlist: Queensryche - AMERICAN SOLDIER (Rhino), Derek
Sherinian - MOLECULAR HEINOSITY (InsideOut Music), Blind Race - SEEING
RED (indie), Time Has Come - WHITE FUZZ (Regain Records).

MEMOIRA (B+/B) Nightmare Records, 2008
9 tracks, RT: 41:08

Lance King sure has an ear for talent, continually finding quality
outfits to sign to his Nightmare label. Memoira are a six-piece band
from Finland playing melodic goth metal with progressive elements, and
their eponymous debut is quite impressive for such a young group.
Vocalist Jemina Pitkala has the stylistic chops and emotional range to
pull off epic sounding pieces such as "Experimenters Farewell,"
"Haunted," "Incurable" and "Liberation," the band adept at blending
heavy crunch with majestic keyboards. Memoira get a bit too morose at
times and even though "Shadow On My Name" is a catchy tune, I'm not
sure the male/female vocal duet entirely works. Still, this is some
strong material from a band that has the ability to follow acts such
as Evanescence and Lacuna Coil into the mainstream, or go head to head
with heavier groups like Within Temptation and After Forever. Overall
an engaging work well worth checking into...

BILLY SHEEHAN - HOLY COW! (A-) Mascot Records, 2009

Bass god Billy Sheehan is back in fine form on his third solo album
HOLY COW! Well you know you're in for some high octane bass playing
whenever Billy is involved, and he really does a great job of infusing
this material with suitably impressive chops, his slippery runs and
creative two-handed tapping technique second to none. Billy is a good
singer too, but that's not why fans will buy this album -- it will be
to hear the master at work on his instrument, showing how it's done on
some stylistically diverse tracks like opener "In A Week Or Two (I'll
Give It Back To You)," infectious rocker "A Bloodless Casualty,"
hyperactive shredder "Just Another Humanoid," kinetic instrumental
"Theme From An Imaginary Sci-Fi" and precisely atmospheric "Cell
Towers." HOLY COW! is not unlike Geddy Lee's MY FAVORITE HEADACHE
combined with a healthy dose of Paul Gilbert and Dug Pinnick, and
indeed Paul and Dug show up here on several tracks, along with Billy
Gibbons. Billy Sheehan is the main guy here though, handling bass,
vocals and guitar with the excellent Ray Luzier manning the drum kit.
HOLY COW! is a fun listen, and Billy even includes three bonus tracks,
closer "Swimming Under Water" turning out to be another highlight.
Essential for fans of Billy Sheehan, I can also recommend HOLY COW! to
anyone who likes good ol' high energy rock -- with bass apparently
from another planet!

STATIC-X - CULT OF STATIC (B/B-) Reprise Records, 2009
11 tracks, RT: 42:06
Wow, first Carbon 9 and now Static X, if I'm not careful folks are
going to think I've gone Industrial! Self-described "evil disco"
stylists Static X have just released their latest album CULT OF
STATIC, and if you are familiar with the band at all you pretty much
know what you are in for -- jackhammer riffs, blasting beats, pounding
bass, techno keyboard flourishes and of course, Wayne Static's speedy,
growling vocals. It's all well-produced and delivered with sincerity,
if not a bit one-dimensional at times, but the repetition contributes
to the hypnotic feel which is an integral part of this kind of thing.
Highlights would have to include opener "Lunatic" which features a
cool solo by Dave Mustaine, menacing "Z28" (which has an interesting
"Hangar 18" vibe), rhythmically driving "You Am I" and closer "Grind 2
Halt." I don't know, for some reason the main riff to "Stingwray"
brings to mind the Ohio Player's well-known hit "Love Rollercoaster"
(!?) but it turns into a pretty decent heavy groove rocker.
Personally, not the kind of stuff I can listen to for long periods of
time, too much of the same thing for me but if you like this style
you'll probably find CULT OF STATIC satisfying.
