Gilbert and Nelson share many musical and cultural roots. Both artists
grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both were born the same
year and started playing guitar around the same time. Both played in
Pittsburgh bands, and even shared some of the same band members.
Gilbert moved to Los Angeles, and Nelson stayed in Pittsburgh, so they
never met until now.

On first listen, Nelson's stunning vocals reminds many listeners of
the legendary Freddie Mercury. But listen again, and you will be
introduced to a singer, performer, and writer with a unique sound and
character all his own.

Gilbert could easily rest on his "Guitar Hero" reputation, but being
raised on The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen, Gilbert
craves great rock singing and songs.

Paul Gilbert began his career with the legendary shred-metal band
Racer X in 1986. Since then, his guitar playing has brought him number
one hits with the band Mr. Big, and a devoted following of guitar and
music lovers all over the world. Gilbert's recent foray into
instrumental guitar music brought him even more attention, and has
resulted in extensive touring with Joe Satriani's G3 tour in North
America and over 100 shows as a headliner in Europe, Japan, and South

Moore's spent the last several years out on tour with British rock/
metal band UFO. Once off tour, Moore spent time orchestrating his new
album meticulously laying down the tracks to his newest guitar
instrumental masterpiece.

Choosing a very retro-contemporary rock style mixed with many other
styles and influences, Moore decided he would make it a good old-
fashioned rock 'n' roll instrumental album. It's just Vinnie Moore,
his guitar, and his raw guitar talent -- all the ingredients that make
this album a work of art.

TO THE CORE boasts such tracks as "Fly," "Panic Attack" and "Off The
Hook." All the songs take on unique tones has Moore takes you on a
journey track after track. "The only plan I had when making this
record was to do some things I have never done before," explains
Moore. "I am into many types of music and wanted to make a record
where I could just let it all pour out without limitations. I am
basically a rock guy but all these other influences that filter into
my music. You can hear many styles from an R&B/Hip Hop vibe to one
that is heavy but has an indian vibe with lots of exotic percussion. I
even have a couple tunes with techno elements, some funk, some blues
and some bepop. Hell, there is even some motorcycles on it and I even
played slide guitar on 'Jigsaw' which is fairly new for me. The common
thread that ties it all together is probably the fact that it's me
playing guitar through it all."

TO THE CORE was recorded at The Core. John "JD" Deservio (Black Label
Society) plays bass, with Van Romaine on drums and Tim Lehner on
keyboards.

-Bass Player Marten Andersson Unveils New ESP 8-String Bass

Bass Player Marten Andersson (Lizzy Borden, George Lynch, Starwood), a
long time player and endorsee of ESP, has unveiled photos of his new
8-string ESP Bass. "I have played ESPs for most of my life," explained
Marten Andersson. "Working together with ESP, and based on my ideas
and specs we have created a prototype of my first custom bass. This is
a true, unique 8-string bass that has been refined in my head for a
couple of years. I chose top components and the highest standards and
craftsmanship that ESP offers. This bass stays in tune throughout a
full headlining set and it is one of the loudest, most powerful basses
I have ever heard."

Only available factory direct through ESP (at the moment) as a built
to order. This bass was designed on Andersson's original
specifications and comes with top of the line pickups and hardware,
but can be outfitted with either EMG or Seymour Duncan pickups,
Schaller or Dunlop Straplocks, and Black or Chrome hardware. Featuring
a standard 8-string ESP B Series neck (with different headstock), 34"
scale with 24 frets. The model incorporates a metallic red sparkle
finish with star inlays as fret markers. Fretboard/inlay: rosewood/
stars and Gotoh Tuners.

which premiered on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" last weekend. The track

-Power Quest Bid Farewell To Bill Hudson

We are sorry to announce that after 10 months, Bill Hudson and Power
Quest have parted ways. The split was extremely amicable and was down
to the fact that both parties were struggling with the logistics of
Bill being based in L.A. and the rest of the band being in Europe.

Power Quest keyboardist and founder Steve Williams commented:
"Unfortunately the timescales and costs involved were too great for us
to be able to manage in the current climate. We remain the very best
of friends and certainly do not rule out collaboration between myself
and Bill in the not too distant future. We all wish him the very best
for the future with Circle II Circle and his other projects and we
look forward to him joining us on stage at ProgPower USA in Atlanta in
September!"

Bill also commented on the news: "Yeah, it's true. I'm no longer in
Power Quest and that pretty much sucks. Unfortunately, having to fly
back and forth between Europe and the U.S. became a hassle, and I was
even having to NOT be present at some shows, such as Hammerfest in
Wales. That situation wasn't good for either of us. HOWEVER, you can
expect to see me on stage with them at ProgPower USA this year, as
well as some other surprises that might just appear here and there!
Just to make it clear: I still love those dudes and we're still the
best of friends! I wanna thank all of our amazing fans (some of the
most hardcore I've ever seen) as well as Manuela, Simon and Paul, who
work their asses off to make Power Quest's life easier on the road!"

Z Rock Festival Moves Into 2010

It is with great pleasure that we can confirm that a Z Rock Festival
will be staged in England during May 2010. We have already secured
some acts for the main day and are currently in negotiations with

-Sacred Oath: Video Debut Headbanger's Ball Blog And Top 50 Debut On
iTunes At 46 On Rock Chart

MTV has the exclusive on the first video from the new Sacred Oath
album April 10th. "Counting Zeros," also the first single from the
self-titled new album, was handpicked by iTunes as their Discovery
Download Pick Of The Week for April 7th, and the band quickly set upon
creating a video for the song.

"I couldn't be happier," said lead singer/guitarist Rob Thorne in a
written statement released by the label Angel Thorne Music. "'Counting
Zeros' is my favorite track on the album for so many reasons, not
least of which is the lyric content. A few years ago we were
uncovering the corruption underneath the war in Iraq. Now we're neck
deep in AIG bonuses and Bernie Madoff. 'Counting Zeros' is a call to
arms."

It seems fitting for a band whose loyal fans refer to themselves as
"Oathbangers" to pair up with Headbanger's Blog for the video debut.
Sacred Oath released their first album in 1987 (A CRYSTAL VISION) when
"Headbanger's Ball" was new and enjoying tremendous popularity. "Our
fans have always been the 'oathbangers,'" says Thorne. "Everyone was
bangin' something back then," he says with a smile.

The new album from Sacred Oath cracked the Top 50 on the rock charts
within the first three days of sales on iTunes. At the #46 position
(and climbing), this is already the best-selling album ever for the
band. "Unbelievable," croaked Thorne from a 7:30 a.m. wakeup call

-Shadowside: DARE TO DREAM MySpace Premiere Announced

Full album will be available for preview on MySpace music this
Thursday (16)

Shadowside together with MySpace Brazil will feature all tracks from
the upcoming record on their official MySpace profile. From noon on,
Rock/Metal fans all over the world can check out, from April 16th to
May 16th, the full DARE TO DREAM album before its release, set for the
first week of May through LCM/Radar Records.

After four tours through U.S.A. and Spain, following the successful
debut album THEATRE OF SHADOWS, this new material was produced and
mixed by Dave Schiffman (System Of A Down, Audioslave, Avenged
Sevenfold) at LCM Studio, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In charge of the
mastering was Howie Weinberg (Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Metallica,
Pantera and several others) at Masterdisk Studio, in New York.

-Daydream XI: New Band Name And EP Soon To Be Released

Osmium, a Brazilian prog/power metal band, was formed in 2005, only
playing covers on that time. In the next few years the group composed
their first own songs, and with the development of their musical
identity, in the end of 2008 they presented themselves as Daydream XI.

With this new name the quintet formed by Tiago Masseti (vocals),
Marcelo Pereira (guitars), Cássio de Assis (guitars), Tomás Gonzaga
(bass) and Maurício Goldstein (drums) will release soon their first
EP, which is being produced by the guitarist Renato Osorio (Magician,
Scelerata, Fighterlord). More information will be available in the

The Dutch Melodic Metal band Edge Of Serenity will release their debut

-Korpiklaani: New Album And Tour

Finnish folk metallers Korpiklaani will release their sixth album,
KARKELO (English translation: "Pleasure" or "Party"), on June 26

Today Tomek "Storm" Twardowski has left Witchking. His personal

-The Iron Maiden documentary "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" is due out on
extended Blu-Ray and DVD later this spring. There will also be two-
disc soundtrack CD and limited edition two-disc vinyl picture disc
releases. The European street date is set for May 25 via EMI, and the

-Okay, I admit it. I fell for it. The "Manowar reunites with original
member" headline above had me thinking guitarist Ross The Boss was
back in the fold. After all, he has been playing old Manowar tunes
live and he put out the excellent NEW METAL LEADER disc last year. For
a second I wondered if they'd pull an Iron Maiden by keeping both Ross
and Karl Logan in the band. But then before I started hyperventilating
I actually *read* the press release and saw it pertained to the
drummer situation. Ah. Gotcha. I know Donnie Hamzik rejoined Manowar
for a special gig or two recently but I have no idea what he's been up
to for most of the last, oh, 25 years or so. I hope it works, and I
hope all's cool with Scott "My Drum Kit Is The Ultimate In The
Universe And Everything Else Is Junk" Columbus.

Ana Kefr is a new band and they're here to introduce a new style of
metal -- Philosophy Metal. Their musical style is experimental, a
fusion of deep meaning themes and heavy, hard-hitting sounds. I had
the pleasure of conversing with the band's vocalist/keyboardist/
lyricist, Rhiis Lopez. I can now say that I see real potential for
this hard-working and determined band! Just to become better
acquainted, the term "Ana Kefr" is an Arabic phrase, when translated
means, "I Am Infidel." This is a prime example of the ingenuity that
this band has to offer. Their debut album, VOLUME 1, is set to be
released June 1, 2009. But don't fret, in the meantime you can get a
taste of what to expect from the tracks posted on their MySpace page.
The album is somewhat of a concept album. It is structured in
chapters. There is one cover song on the album, "Step Back," which
features Tairrie B and Mick Murphy of My Ruin. Other than that, the
songs flow in a consistent rhythm, each song experimenting with free
speech in their own way. My favorite thing about this album is the
lyrics. They fearlessly express a critical analysis of western
society. Racism, religion, philosophy, politics, and overall hypocrisy
are cast into the foreground, and are expertly dissected in a blunt,
but honest way. There is emphasis on truth, or lack of it, which is
the theme of the aptly named song, "T.Ruthless." Ana Kefr is a highly
evolved band that can see problems and corruption in the world, and
they are sick of it. While it's the shortest song on the album, "Feed
A PETA Member To A Starving Child In Africa" showcases their
perceptive, yet humorous solution to some of our world's serious
issues. Musically, this band holds a more unique charm than a typical,
straightforward metal band. Acoustic guitars, keyboards, and even some
Eastern hand-percussion instruments are blended together to create a
unique breed of music that complements the philosophical lyrics well.
Vocally, they are hard to characterize, because Rhiis Lopez uses a few
different ranges. When he's screaming his lungs out, it reminds me of
Dimmu Borgir, but not in a gothic way. This is a very well thought-out
and cleverly constructed album. If you like lyrics with depth,
covering current events and "religio-political" topics, then you will
be sure to like this. If you're going to listen to this album, then
you *need* to read the lyrics too, because they're just that damn
good! If you want some brutal, head-banging metal music, then this
album will be sure to satisfy your needs. This is a really impressive
album for a debut. Worth checking out!

Canadian trio Mendozza hammer their brand of Sludge/Stoner metal home
on WHITE RHINO, the name likely a reference to a certain illicit herb.
The early Black Sabbath influences are clear on crushers like "Otzi
The Wanderer," "Halo Of Crows," and the title track, but Mendozza also
mix in elements reminiscent of The Melvins and Mastodon, really
hitting their stride on "Rise Of The Piscean." It's heavy stuff, and
honestly the raw vocals do tend to grind you after awhile, but the
shear weight and intensity of the material is intoxicating, inviting
repeat listens. Good production and a reasonable running time help
keep things approachable. WHITE RHINO is not going to be to everyone's
liking, but if you have a taste for some powerful doom, look no
further...
