-I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker today -- we were
trying to remember big/classic comedy movies from the late '80s. We
came up with a few but it was surprisingly hard to do so. And no, we
don't cheat by using IMDB.com. - Tim

-Judas Priest DVD To Be Filmed Live In South Florida
Attention All Metalheads: Judas Priest's Upcoming Southern Florida
Show Will Be Filmed For A Live DVD -- Not To Be Missed
Tickets On Sale Now -- So Be There!!!!
It is hard to pinpoint when heavy metal history is going to be made.
However, an upcoming event will surely be one of the few times you
know for sure that it will. Judas Priest will be filming their
upcoming August 17th performance at the Hard Rock Live at the Seminole
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino -- Hollywood, FL, for a DVD that will be
included in a forthcoming expanded 30th Anniversary edition of their
1980 classic, BRITISH STEEL. As with all of their U.S. summer dates
this year, Priest has been performing the album in its entirety from
front to back. With the band playing the entire BRITISH STEEL
repertoire, the August 17th show at the Seminole Hard Rock Arena in
Hollywood, Florida (which will be one of the last of this U.S. Summer
'09 tour) will surely capture Priest at their peak!! Not to be
missed!!
BRITISH STEEL has long been considered one of metal's all-time
classics. It was with this release that Priest truly broke through to
the masses, with a pair of tracks that have become fixtures on rock
radio -- the enduring anthems "Breaking The Law" and "Living After
Midnight." But like all classic albums, there is not a single weak
track detected on BRITISH STEEL, as evidenced by such standouts as the
perennial concert highlight, "Metal Gods," as well as "Rapid Fire,"
"Grinder," "United," and "The Rage," among others.
Produced by Tom Allom, BRITISH STEEL was recorded at Tittenhurst Park
in England -- which is a mansion owned at the time by former Beatle
Ringo Starr, and previously owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In
2001, the album was re-mastered and reissued with extra bonus tracks,
and also, was the subject of an in-depth study as part of the popular
"Classic Albums" DVD series.
So come on out on August 17th and cheer the mighty Priest on as they
document on stage an album that has served as the perfect metal summer
soundtrack year after year and constantly picks up new
converts...don't miss your chance to be included in this rare DVD
footage!!
Tickets for this show are now on sale.

-Magic Circle Music Update
Magic Circle Festival III: Thank You For Another Great Festival
True Metal fans had a chance to prove their party qualities during the
third edition of Magic Circle Festival that was celebrated on July
17th and 18th at Loreley/Germany. An international lineup, including
Kingdom Come, Van Canto and newcomers Ulytau from Kazakhstan rocked
the Rhine valley, and not only headliners Manowar premiered songs from
their new album but also Jack Starr's Burning Starr, Metalforce and
rising stars HolyHell hit the stage with songs from their new albums.
For the stars of the evening, Manowar, the Loreley appearance was a
special highlight on their "Death To Infidels Tour" with the live
premiere of their new songs from THUNDER IN THE SKY, the first CD from
"The Asgard Saga," the band's multimedia project with fantasy author
Wolfgang Hohlbein, an action adventure based on the Norse mythology
that will be expanded with further releases continuously.
Before Manowar shook the earth with their latest pieces, including the
pounding "Let The Gods Decide" and "God Or Man," Wolfgang Hohlbein
took the stage to announce the release of his first book from "The
Asgard Saga" for March 2010. For Manowar's upcoming longplay album
HAMMER OF THE GODS that is planned for release this Winter, he
promised an additional exclusive story, like he provided for each song
of the THUNDER IN THE SKY E.P.
The author especially thanked the fans for the great response to his
reading session on Friday, when he publicly read from these short
stories for the first time. "I was amazed by the great interest from
the audience, especially at this early stage of the project, and by
the very warm welcome I was given," the author said afterwards. Joey
DeMaio, who had to visit a hospital for an emergency on Friday, says
"I wish I could have been there to witness Wolfgang premiering his
stories and joining him in the Q&A session. The collaboration with him
has been a great experience and I am looking forward to expand the
project with him." For the next festival the partners promised more
time and space for "Asgard" related activities.
Parallel to the live premiere of THUNDER IN THE SKY a Deluxe 2-Disc
Edition of the CD was released on July 17th. The E.P. features six
songs and a Bonus CD with the power ballad "Father" recorded in 16
different languages. It also holds a booklet with more than 50 pages
of song lyrics and exclusive short stories by Wolfgang Hohlbein,
revealing additional aspects from "The Asgard Saga."
The Deluxe 2-Disc Edition is available in retail outlets throughout
Germany, Austria and Switzerland and other European countries, and for
international shipment at the Kingdom Of Steel Online Store, where
also a high-quality, DRM-free, MP3 format can be purchased. The
downloadable version contains the exact same audio content as the
E.P.: "Thunder In The Sky," "God Or Man," "Let The Gods Decide,"
"Father," "Die With Honor," "The Crown And The Ring" (2008 Metal
Version) and versions of "Father" recorded in German, Italian,
Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Norwegian, Spanish, French, Greek,
Turkish, Polish, Japanese, Croatian, Portuguese and Finnish.
As a special "Thank You" to the fans, the booklet stories from THUNDER
IN THE SKY and further special features will be made available on the
official Web site of "The Asgard Saga," http://www.asgard-saga.com/ .

-Vision Divine Goes 9 DEGREES WEST OF THE MOON
TRENTON, N.J. -- Frontiers Records is excited to announce the signing
for a multi-album deal of the mighty Vision Divine, Italy's melodic
metal finest.
The new cooperation will bring the first fruits with the release of
the band's brand new studio album 9 DEGREES WEST OF THE MOON.
Born as a side project of the esteemed guitarist and songwriter of
Labyrinth, Olaf Thorsen, to keep his working relationship with Fabio
Lione (former Labyrinth vocalist who had moved on to Rhapsody), Vision
Divine evolved during the years into a real band that released five
acclaimed studio albums, one DVD, and toured several times in Japan,
South and North America, and played in several European countries.
The new album is particularly important in the history of the band as
it marks the return of Fabio Lione on lead vocals, after Thorsen's
decision to say goodbye to Michele Luppi in June 2008. "Fabio's return
is like going back to square one for us," said Thorsen. "However
Vision Divine is a band that did always move forward and I think that
with his voice and interpretation he has enriched the songs and gave
them a very peculiar and personal edge. I am truly enthusiastic of his
return to the band and look forward to bringing this record out there
with his amazing vocal abilities."
Vision Divine's lineup is completed by Alessio Lucatti on keyboards,
Cristiano Bertocchi (ex-Labyrinth) on bass, Federico Puleri on guitar,
and Alessandro Bissa on drums.
Produced by none other than the former Stratovarius main man Timo
Tolkki, Vision Divine created what is easily their most mature and
intense record to date. Entitled 9 DEGREES WEST OF THE MOON, this is
Vision Divine's heaviest, but yet most melodic and catchy album ever,
showing why they are now the number one band in the Italian metal
scene. "Melodies are the most important element of our music," Thorsen
said. "However our songwriting is very diverse. All the songs have
very different atmospheres and can go from melodic songs like 'Violet
Loneliness' to very aggressive and heavy ones. I think there is
something for everyone on this record."
Vision Divine are also working hard on putting up a new World Tour
which will again bring the band to Asia, South America, and possibly
Europe outside their homeland Italy. 9 DEGREES WEST OF THE MOON is a
fantastic journey that fans will consider Vision Divine's true career-
defining statement.
The album's final track listing includes: "Letter To My Child Never
Born," "Violet Loneliness," "Fading Shadow," "Angels In Disguise,"
"The Killing Speed Of Time," "The Streets Of Laudomia," "Fly," "Out In
Open Space," "9 Degrees West Of The Moon," "A Touch Of Evil," and
"Fading Shadow" (Demo Version -- exclusive bonus track for Europe).

-Machines Of Grace Turn Heads Early With Strong Radio Showing
On the strength of their self-titled debut, melodic metallists
Machines Of Grace are steadily assaulting rock radio. In less than a
month (the group's debut was issued on July 7th), the group landed at
#4 on FMQB 'most added' chart, with 34 adds (debut 50 bullet with 41
spins) and was #3 on CMJ's 'most added' chart, with 48 adds. Machines
Of Grace has also enjoyed a strong showing on radio stations
throughout the U.S., including such heavy hitters as Austin's KROX,
Los Angeles' FMJ, Kansas City's KKFI, and Chicago's WKTA, among
countless others. With such an incredible early radio buzz, the list
of radio adds will surely only grow larger.
Managing to both pay tribute to their metal forefathers while also
keeping a modern hard rock edge, the Boston-based quartet is one of
the few currents acts that will appeal to both factions. Their self-
titled debut certainly proves this, as evidenced by such white hot/
melodic rockers as "Just A Game," "Psychotic," and "Fly Away."
Comprised of band members Zak Stevens (vocals, whose credits include
Circle II Circle, Savatage), Matt Leff (guitars), Chris Rapoza (bass),
and Jeff Plate (drums, whose credits include Trans-Siberian Orchestra,
Savatage, Metal Church), the album was mixed by renowned studio expert
Paul David Hagar (who has worked over the years with acts such as the
Goo Goo Dolls, Avril Lavigne, Pink, and Tracy Bonham).
"I'd say we're a mix of melodic metal, hard rock, modern rock and
acoustic rock," explains Leff. "The current rock climate is calling
for modern production, strong vocal melodies and memorable songs from
guys that can really play. I think we fit that description." Plate
tops off the sentiment: "The music is metal, but not thrash. Rock, but
not pop. We could be compared to a number of different bands, and each
song will give you a different impression, but in the end the sound is
distinctly Machines Of Grace."
Machines Of Grace has also garnered glowing reviews from such esteemed
online music sources as BraveWords.com (who describe the group as "A
throwback to a simpler time when the almighty riff and strong melody
lines ruled a la Badlands, Brother Cane and Tangier; raucous, groove-
ridden soul to the max") and All Music Guide (who raved "Machines Of
Grace do possess an unmistakable '80s flair about them -- but with a
much more succinct and mainstream rock-based songwriting style"). Give
the self-titled debut by Machines Of Grace a spin to truly understand
what all the early buzz is about.

-Saint Deamon Unleashes Its PANDEAMONIUM
TRENTON, N.J. -- Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release
of the new album from Saint Deamon, PANDEAMONIUM.
Named after a fictitious ghost rider called S. Deamon, and with a nod
towards the contrast between the heavenly/diabolical feel of the name,
the Saint Deamon was put together in 2006 by drummer Ronny Milianowicz
(ex-Dionysus and songwriter for Primal Fear, Cans and Place Vendome
among others), together with bass player Nobby Noberg (also ex-
Dionysus), guitar virtuoso Toya Johansson, and the golden voice of the
Norwegian Jan Thore Grefstad (ex-Highland Glory). The band debuted in
early 2008 with a stunning album IN SHADOWS LOST FROM THE BRAVE, a
record that garnered great acclaim from both critics and fans.
Saint Deamon toured extensively in support of the release during 2008,
with gigs in Sweden, Norway, Austria, Italy, England, and U.S.A.
appearing at some of the world's finest metal festivals like ProgPower
USA and Bloodstock UK, creating a buzz as being one of the hardest
working bands in the scene.
Just over a year after the release of their debut album, Saint Deamon
are back with a strong head wind in their sails with the worthy
follow-up PANDEAMONIUM. Produced by two of the world's most famous
heavy metal producers, Roy Z (Judas Priest, Halford, Helloween, Bruce
Dickinson, who also co-wrote the album's title track with the band)
and Jens Bogren (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth), PANDEAMONIUM
shows a well-oiled metal machine that has no limits in terms of
inspiration, musical direction, focus, dedicated members, or
professionalism.
"The chance to work with Roy was actually pure luck," said founder and
drummer Ronny Milianowicz. "He had been renting our studio for four
weeks to work with the new Wolf album and I was just there to brew
some coffee, drive his equipment here and there to different recording
places, and to make his time in Sweden as pleasant as possible. But
after four weeks together we became friends and I really mean FRIENDS.
You know that kinda friend you can call in the middle of the night if
you really need to. So one night at the local bar the night before his
flight was supposed to go back, he decided to stay, and this after
being in our studio four weeks already! And with Jens we have the
solid ground that never let us down and that makes us perform that
little extra out of every take in the studio. I hardly think we will
ever work without him.
"I really believe that our fans can hear the true passion and
brotherhood in the production of PANDEAMONIUM."
Final track listing of PANDEAMONIUM includes: "Deception," "The Only
One Sane," "Pandeamonium," "Eyes Of The Devil," "A Day To Come," "Way
Home," "Fallen Angel," "The Deamon Within," "Oceans Of Glory," and
"Fear In A Fragile Mind." Also includes: "Pandeamonium" (video clip).

-Galactic Cowboys Reunite For Three Texas Shows
HOUSTON -- Galactic Cowboys, the Houston-based band that made a name
for itself with its hard-hitting music and penchant for sarcastic
humor, will make its long-awaited return to the stage this August with
three shows in its native Texas.
The three shows -- in Dallas, Austin and Houston -- will reunite
vocalist Ben Huggins, bassist Monty Colvin, guitarists Wally Farkas,
and drummer Alan Doss on stage for the first time in nearly a decade.
Dane Sonnier, who played guitar on the first two Cowboys records and
remains an extended member of the family, will join the group for
several songs.
"The Cowboys," as they are affectionately known, played their last
show together on December 10, 1999 in Dusseldorf, Germany, before
parting ways. "We were cruising in our starship just off the shoulder
of Orion and got sucked into a wormhole," said Huggins. "For the past
nine years Galactic Cowboys have been living in an alternate universe
where, in large part, we lost touch with one another. It took almost
10 years to find one another again. Immediately we boarded our
starship and came out the other side of the wormhole ready to rock!"
Or, as Colvin added, "We thought it would be fun. Fans have been
asking us to do this for years, but we finally felt like it was the
right time for us to get back together and just have fun playing some
shows. Well, that, and we finally decided to put aside our intense
hatred for each other!"
Fans can expect a mixture of songs from all of the Cowboys albums,
with an emphasis on the earlier recordings. The group, however, has no
plans to showcase any new material. "It's like when you go see the
Stones and they say, 'Here's something off the new album!'" said
Colvin. 'That's usually when everyone goes to the bathroom. I think
they can still expect a very energetic show, but it's always been
about the songs. We've got great songs, and we plan on playing a
pretty long set. They can also expect it to be loud...so bring
earplugs."
Galactic Cowboys signed with DGC (Geffen) in 1990 and released two
critically acclaimed albums, a self-titled release (1991) and SPACE IN
YOUR FACE (1993). In 1995, the band moved to Metal Blade Records and
recorded MACHINE FISH (1996), followed by the E.P. FEEL THE RAGE, also
released in 1996 (which included covers by Paul McCartney's Wings and
Kiss). THE HORSE THAT BUD BOUGHT (1997) followed these releases. In
the spring of '98 the Cowboys began recording again, which resulted in
AT THE END OF THE DAY.
"We are hoping the true fans who have been asking for this will get
themselves to Texas," Colvin said. "These shows are for YOU! The fans
wanted this, and we are looking forward to jamming for them again. And
perhaps even crushing their skulls...and that's a good thing!"
Galactic Cowboys, with special guests Galea and Leaf, dates are as
follows:

-Epica: New Album Update + Headlining North American Tour
Mark Jansen, guitarist & songwriter for Holland's symphonic metal band
Epica, checks in with a new album update plus a headlining North
American 2010 tour announcement:
"It's been a great time at Gate Studio in Wolfsburg [Germany]
recording DESIGN YOUR UNIVERSE. We worked with the same team [producer
Sascha Paeth] and we worked for the first time together with our new
guitar player Isaac Delahaye [formerly of God Dethroned].
"This made a difference and made things very refreshing because we
could add some new elements because of him. We have worked harder than
ever on the details. We preferred to spend some extra money on great
additions which brings our songs to a higher level instead of leaving
things like they are.
"The result is that we worked so hard on this album that we hardly can
listen to the album anymore. Now it's time to let it go and release it
to humanity. We were already very happy with THE DIVINE CONSPIRACY but
I'm sure this new album tops that one.
"The album title, DESIGN YOUR UNIVERSE, deals with new breakthroughs
in quantum physics. It proves that we are all connected to each other
on subatomic level. Also, it shows that we can create or at least
influence matter with our thoughts... a very interesting fact. Because
it changes everything for us, our whole worldview collapses once you
accept these facts and integrate them in your lives. So this had to
become the new album title.
"We'll be headlining a North American tour in 2010 featuring Daath and
Blackguard. I can't wait for this tour as it's a strong package!"
About the band's new material, Epica singer Simone Simons has
previously stated, "It is so exciting! I love the new songs and can't
wait to play them live."
Confirmed tour dates can be found on the band's MySpace page.
http://www.myspace.com/epica
Exclusive pre-sale tickets for the tour are available online beginning
July 20th at EnterTheVault.com through August 19th. On August 20th,
tickets go on sale through all normal ticketing outlets.

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update
Band: Scathe
Album Title: UNSANCTIONED
Genre: Metal, Punk, Heavy Metal
Release Date: Out Now!!
Web site:
http://www.myspace.com/scathemetal
Scathe was formed in Champaign, Illinois in April of 2008. The band
has many influences including: Tool, Slayer, Helmet, Pantera,
Megadeth, and Clutch to name a few. Although Scathe has drawn
influences from all the bands listed, they have a unique sound that is
theirs alone. Shying away from the stereotypical metal band stigma,
each member adds to the one-of-a-kind, infectious, high-energy songs
and stage show that have earned them an ever growing solid fan-base.
The band members include vocalist Bryce Johnson who has a powerful and
melodic voice with a wide vocal range. Bryce was formally in the band
Third Stone which had some national success, and was on the local
Champaign record label Hammerhead Records. Lead guitarist Jeremy
Harper has a unique style that is interesting and memorable. Jeremy
has been playing guitar for 17 years, and teaching guitar for 13 of
those years. Jeremy hosts an open-mic night that has a large following
proving himself as a vital part of the regional music scene. On rhythm
guitar Jason Beck brings a solid, tight fit between the bass and lead
guitar. Beck has a monstrous tone that fills the room and makes the
music seamless. Bass guitar is played by Josh Dodson who complements
the drums with his super-low, massive riffs, and tone. Metal Blade
Records showed interest in Beck and Dodson's old project Downshifter
in the late 1990s. Jason Kitterman is a heavy handed drummer that has
pinpoint accuracy which leads to a heavy and uniform sound.
Scathe had their first show on August 1st, 2008, and since has worked
relentlessly to earn new fan support. Scathe has had the pleasure to
share the stage with such acts as Mind Drop (Hollow Kept Productions),
Shattermask (Sarcophagus Records), Slow Intentional Damage (Turkey
Vulture Records), and Fer De Lance (featured on this summer's
PointFest) just to name a few. These bands have helped Scathe put
their aggressive style of music in front of new exciting crowds, and
Scathe have capitalized by earning the respect of the bands and their
fans.
Track listing:
1. No Warning
2. Bitter Pill
3. Rise
4. Self Delusion
5. El Duce
6. Chemically Happy
7. Wizard's First Rule
Band: Kinlin
Album Title: END OF DISSENT
Genre: Hard Rock
Release Date: Out Now
Web site:
http://www.myspace.com/kinlin
kinlinrocks@...
Take four musicians who look and dig deep into themselves when it
comes to songwriting and performing. Kinlin hits the stage with
intensity that cannot be denied. Playing every song like it's their
last, they pummel the crowd until they "GET IT." Yeah, they do wear
their influences proudly on the Kinlin sleeve.
Take everything from Soundgarden, Pantera, Disturbed toss in a little
Alice In Chains, Avenged Sevenfold and of course don't forget
Zeppelin! Throw it all together, put the fire on high and let the boys
stamp it with the unique signature that says "Kinlin" all over it. Now
you have a force that cannot be ignored. That's probably why they've
shared the big stage with everyone from Godsmack to Three Days Grace.
A nod to the greats and torch for the new is what Kinlin is all about.
This is the future of rock.
One listen and you'll agree these guys have the goods. They are here
to prove it. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and having just
released their second album, Kinlin has played shows all over the U.S.
and is willing to tour abroad. Kinlin does their own recordings,
production and sound engineering.
Drummer Ali Nassar was a drum tech for several years and worked with
Dokken, Dio and Halford. He's played drums in Supergrub, Eulogy Black
Market, Hero, Cro-Mags, and Goddess Delirious. Tom Lynch (guitar),
from South Florida was formerly in No Pressure and FiveSkin and is a
huge fan of the classics including Zeppelin and Rush. Tom brings
intensity and entertainment to every one of his stage performances.
DeWayne Hart (lead vocals/guitars) is formerly of the successful band
Aces Wild. DeWayne has his own studio and is a sound engineer and
producer and has recorded and produced national acts from his The Barn
Recording Studio in Davie, Florida. Dave Thomas (bass/vocals) formerly
of Trial and Moonfarm is from South Florida and is a huge fan of Dream
Theater and King's X. Dave's experience for a Sound Company contribute
greatly to Kinlin's stage show and self-production capabilities.
Press:
"This is a great band that knows how to pull off high octane rock with
real masculine vocals from DeWayne Hart, you could say they sound a
bit like a mix between Soundgarden, Godsmack and Warrior. They are
professional musicians and launch each and every riff like a missile
towards enemy ground, I like all 9 tracks but the ones that stand out
are 'Forever,' 'Coming Home' and 'The Rapture.'" - Melodic.net
Track listing:
1. Forever
2. Coming Home
3. A Ton Of Bricks
4. Marching
5. Down The Line
6. End Of Dissent
7. By Morning
8. Bet Your Life

-In Honor Of The 40th Anniversary, WOODSTOCK DIARY 1969: FRIDAY
SATURDAY SUNDAY Gets DVD Release On September 22
MVD Visual and Wienerworld are pleased to announce the release of
WOODSTOCK DIARY 1969: FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY for North American
distribution on September 22, 2009. Directed and filmed by D.A.
Pennebaker, and produced by Alan Douglas (who actually shot
Woodstock), this is a 180-minute blast from the past.
August 15th, 1969 was a day that went down in popular music culture
when nearly 500,000 people descended on the infamous site of Woodstock
to listen to 26 now-legendary artists over a three-day period.
WOODSTOCK DIARY 1969: FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY, featuring electrifying
live footage performances of many of the bands and performers who
appeared, is an enthralling "fly on the wall" documentary examining
the creation of Woodstock, on its fortieth anniversary and of the
actual three-day event itself. It contains drama, humor, and even
pathos, and recaptures those heady days of the hippie movement when
young people really believed that they could change the world.
And yet incredibly this historic event almost never happened. A series
of near-catastrophes conspired to derail the Woodstock Festival and
but for the sheer perseverance and chutzpah of several key characters,
the whole course of rock music could have been drastically different.
WOODSTOCK DIARY 1969: FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY features appearances from
The Who with "My Generation," Janis Joplin giving a heart-stopping
rendition of "Ball & Chain," Arlo Guthrie performing Dylan's "Walking
Down The Line" and Tim Hardin's tender reading of his own classic song
"If I Were A Carpenter."
Richie Havens, Sha Na Na, Incredible String Band, Jefferson Airplane,
Sly & The Family Stone, Johnny Winter, Crosby Stills & Nash, Joe
Cocker, Country Joe And The Fish and Jimi Hendrix also turn in classic
performances which have ensured that, while there have been subsequent
attempts to imitate the event, the original electrifying Woodstock
Festival has never been emulated.

-Neurot Recordings Joins Earsplit PR Roster
Earsplit is extremely pleased to announce our latest ally; Neurot
Recordings. Founded by Neurosis, the label is a family-run business
handled by Kristin Von Till, the label is not only the home to the
almighty Neurosis, their sister outfit Tribes Of Neurot and the solo
albums by Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till, but has also been one of the
most prolific underground labels of the last decade, with bands such
as Amber Asylum, Isis, KK Null, Red Sparowes, Zeni Geva, U.S.
Christmas, Made Out Of Babies, Oxbow and countless other intriguing
acts calling Neurot home over the years.
Earsplit will be handling press for North America on a host of current
and upcoming Neurot releases, including A Storm Of Light, and the
long-awaited debut from Shrinebuilder!
The upcoming debut monolith from "doom supergroup" Shrinebuilder is
one of the most anticipated heavy releases of 2009, hands-down. A
collaborative effort between members of some of the doom, drone and
stoner rock scene's most influential alumni, Shrinebuilder consists of
Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om), Scott "Wino" Weinrich
(The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, The Hidden Hand, Wino) and Dale Crover
(Melvins). To be released in September the upcoming self-titled
Shrinebuilder album shows these top-tier icons coalescing their power
into a multi-headed beast that not only surges with each member's
personal approach, but also thrives on its own thunderous vitality.
This release will prove to be one of the most monumental heavy
releases of the year.
A Storm Of Light is one of Neurot's major priorities as of late.
Following the band's acclaimed 2008 debut release AND WE WEPT THE
BLACK OCEAN WITHIN, the Brooklyn-based outfit has toured across
several continents, most recently across the Eastern U.S. alongside
Wolves In The Throne Room and Krallice, showcasing the band's musical
strength and topped with their dramatic visual displays. On their
sophomore release FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES, coming this September,
the band layers even more haunting tones into their engulfing post-
doom passages. Like the tidal surge of an angry tonal sea, the album
broadcasts a dim forecast for humankind, predicting Earth's revenge on
man for pushing the planet to the breaking point. This record will
definitely be a high-point in 2009 for fans of Neurosis, Minsk, Ahab
and YOB.
Other recently released Neurot albums include the sophomore album from
Harvestman (solo project of Neurosis' Steve Von Till) IN A DARK
TONGUE, longtime soloist KK Null's OXYGEN FLASH release, the debut
album FLORA from Chord (featuring Trevor De Brauw of Pelican), and the
¡M.G.R. Y Destructo Swarmbots! release AMIGOS DE LA GUITARRA
(featuring Mike Gallagher of Isis).

-Susperia Working On New Video
Norwegian five-piece Susperia are currently working on a new video for
the song "Character Flaw" with up and coming director/producer Daniel
William Bones. Filming took place in Oslo last month and the footage
is now being edited. The performance video will continue the
apocalyptic theme featured in the artwork of the band's latest album
ATTITUDE, which was released via Candlelight Records in May.
Susperia's fifth studio album, ATTITUDE was recorded in Norway and
mixed at Studio Fredman in Sweden. It features guest appearances by
Chuck Billy (Testament) and Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir). Band vocalist
Athera made his return to the live arena in June at the Steinkjer
Festival in Norway. The singer, who earlier this year suffered a heart
attack which resulted in major open heart surgery, has made a rapid
recovery and doctors gave him the go-ahead to make his comeback.
Regional newspaper Trønder-Avisa posted performance footage and an

VIRUS. Commented front man Peter Tagtgren on the record: "We're happy
of the result so far; its got everything a Hypocrisy album should have
in our own point of view. We will release it October 23rd (Europe) and
November 3rd (North America) and start touring in the U.S.A.,
supporting Ensiferum!"
Roman-themed death metal troop Ex Deo, featuring members of Kataklysm
and Blackguard, will be touring in support of their recently issued
debut ROMULUS. "I would like to thank everyone from the Ensiferum camp
for this generous invitation," said main man Maurizio Iacono. "We
cordially accept the offer, but make no mistake: Rome bows to no one
and our American legions are growing rapidly. We come for blood and we
shall take no prisoners and in the great words of Caesar, 'Vini, Vidi,
Vici,' and this is what we intend to do in November."
Added Blackguard vocalist Paul Ablaze: "We had such a blast with our
Finnish brothers Ensiferum on the Summer Slaughter tour that a second
round seems appropriate. Magnified by the legendary Hypocrisy and our
friends in the Roman legion of Ex Deo, this will be the show to see
this late fall." The folk-influenced progressive metal act is
currently celebrating the release of their debut, PROFUGUS MORTIS.
Ensiferum's FROM AFAR is scheduled for a U.S. release on September 8,
2009 (September 9th for the rest of the world) via Spinefarm Records.
The CD was produced by Tero Kinnunen (Nightwish, Amorphis) and Janne
Joutsenniemi, who produced the band's previous offering, VICTORY SONGS
and mixed by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Amorphis).
Finalized tour dates to be announced soon. Stay tuned!

-Man, that Triton Power Cruise thingy sure looks cool. Crimson Glory,
Jon Oliva, and Evergrey all in one place? C'mon... How awesome is
that? And with Oliva, Circle II Circle, and Jack Frost from Seven
Witches you've got tons of Savatage present...but no Savatage. What,
Chris Caffery can't make it? What is up with Savatage? I've said it
before, yes, Oliva and Caffery are going great guns with their solo
output but I want a new 'tage album.
-More Spinal Tap appearances this week... The band is still hyping
BACK FROM THE DEAD, and the film "This Is Spinal Tap!" was released
this past Tuesday on Blu-ray. The band performed "Back From The Dead"
on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Monday, and "(Funky) Sex Farm"
and "Gimme Some Money" on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" on
Tuesday.
-Personally, I have no use for Static-X but I really like what they're
doing with selling digital copies of their concerts on USB drives
after each show. I know they're not the first band to do this but give
'em props. I think more bands need to do this.
-Be sure to grab that Armored Saint "Loose Cannon" demo while it's hot
-- it's a cool song. I love this band. I know the 'net is buzzing
about John Bush possibly rejoining Anthrax, but if that happens, it
better not interfere with Armored Saint!!!
-Twisted Sister was supposed to perform on "Late Night" last week but
didn't I wonder what was up.

DAY WITHOUT DAWN - UNDERSTANDING CONSEQUENCES (C) Forgotten Empire

Day Without Dawn was formed in 2006 by the remaining members of the
band The Postman Syndrome. Their latest album, UNDERSTANDING
CONSEQUENCES, was released in 2008. Their genre is a bit hard to
classify. They have some elements of classic rock and it reminded me
of a modernized Led Zeppelin or Queen in a small way. For the most
part, the vocals of Jim Stang are on the soft side, coherent, and easy
to understand. There are some parts on some songs, where it gets much
deeper and grittier. That's really the only "metal" component of this
album. The band's style also reminded me somewhat of Tool, but not up
to their caliber. The transition between songs is sometimes seamless.
But this is not always a good thing. It makes it easy to tune out the
music and you'll be unaware of what song you're listening to. The
songs have a hard time distinguishing themselves from each other; it
makes good background music. If there were one word I could use to
describe this album it would be "mellow." The instrumentation is
typical rock and they know how to play, but the sounds just aren't
that original. They're not bad to listen to and there is really not
anything wrong with them. They just seem to lack vigor, catchiness,
and originality.

PATHOSRAY - SUNLESS SKIES (A-/B+) Frontiers/Super D, 2009

Second time out for Italian prog metalers Pathosray proves their debut
was no fluke, as they've turned in another strong album of well
crafted bombast on SUNLESS SKIES. The album kicks off in fine form
with "Crown Of Thorns," all menacing riffs and eerie keyboard
embellishments conjuring a Nevermore vibe, while "Aurora" features
great melodies and stunning vocals courtesy of the excellent Marco
Sandron. The guys still retain a bit of Labyrinth influence,
especially on the sensitive "In Your Arms," but the band are really
carving a distinctive niche for themselves, very noticeable on the
epic "Poltergeist," which really showcases the amazing drumming of
secret weapon Ivan Moni Bidin, along with some well utilized female
vocals. There are a few good but rather customary numbers and I still
yearn to hear a bit more lead guitar but this hardly detracts from the
overall impact of the album, which should go down a treat live. This
one really keeps your interest and gets better with each listen.
Recommended for fans of modern progressive metal.

REO SPEEDWAGON - FIND YOUR OWN WAY HOME (B-) Speedwagon Recordings,
2007
10 tracks, RT: 43:59

It's been over ten years since REO put out a release of all-new
material, and the result has some hits and misses. Kevin Cronin's
liner notes say that this music is the silver lining of some
challenging years, but it does not show here: most of the songs are
typical of REO's more mellow music without as much straight-down-the-
line rock. You won't find a "Don't Let Him Go" or a "Ridin' The Storm
Out" on here, but then, there's no long, epic "Can't Fight This
Feeling" either. What you will find on this CD is a wide variety of
styles and some experiments for this group, which is great to see from
a band that's been playing for over 30 years. While the title track
only gets a 5 of 10 on the rating scale, the opening song is much
better. The upbeat pep-talk "Smilin' In The End" has been well-
received in live performances I've seen. Cronin has a tendency to find
a pattern in his music and stick to it through an entire CD; he's at
his best when others collaborate with him, whether within the band or
outside of it. One of the most skilled and prolific songwriters, Jim
Peterik, joins Cronin in writing "Dangerous Combination," and it
shows. Their words and Cronin's delivery of these lyrics is solid,
classic-rock gold; you suspect there's surely a true story in these
words, and no one would be surprised to hear Cronin spend a little
time setting a scene before performing this one live. It should have
definitely been a single released and pushed -- it might have given
the CD a chance to rise from obscurity. But "Born To Love You" is the
gem of the release; it is the single song written and sung by bassist
Bruce Hall, in keeping with the band's tradition. They need to
introduce this surprisingly catchy funky-blues number into their live
set and retire the 30-year-old "Back On The Road Again," at least long
enough for this song to catch on. Are there clunkers on this? For
sure; skip tracks 5 and 6, and listen to track 8 only once to say you
did it: "Everything You Feel" is too preachy for my taste. "Let My
Love Find You" sounds like it's trying to be a hymn; however, it
showcases the great harmony between Cronin and lead guitarist Dave
Amato -- something the band should incorporate more into their work.
Final answer on this music? REO fans need this CD. The casual fan?
What will hold back the casual fan is the fact that it's new and they
don't have every nuance of the songs memorized (the studio and
possibly even the live versions). Give it a chance. If you like
melodic, classic rock, there are enough songs on this release that
will make it worth the cost, especially this long after the release
when you might be lucky enough to find it in the bargain rack.
