-Saxon Documentary On The Way
U.K.'s Coolhead Productions is putting the finishing touches on a new
documentary about the legendary British heavy metal band Saxon called
"Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie." The film, which is expected to be
released in November, celebrates the group's 30th anniversary.
Produced by the makers of the critically acclaimed "Ian Gillan:
Highway Star" (Universal, 2007), it not only has contributions from
members of Saxon, past and present, but also from the likes of Lars
Ulrich (Metallica); Lemmy, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, Phil Campbell, Mikkey
Dee (Motorhead); Harvey Goldsmith, Danko Jones, Doro Pesch and many,
many others. It will also feature plenty of rare archive material and
previously unseen concert footage, from the classic 1980s lineup to
the brilliant St. George's Day show in 2008 and Wacken Open Air in
2009. A special limited edition of "Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie"
will contain a feature-length documentary, at least two never-before-

Guilt Machine Unleashes New Album In The U.S.A.

HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Arjen Lucassen creates the new prog rock project
Guilt Machine. The band releases ON THIS PERFECT DAY September 29th on
Mascot Records U.S.A. The album will be released in three formats.
Regular Edition of CD in jewel case, Special edition of CD/DVD Digi-
pak and a limited edition CD/DVD Digi-book.
"In my view this is my best side project so far," explains Lucassen.
"It comes completely from the heart, for it was written and recorded
during a new inspiring phase in my life after my heavy depression.
This, being an entirely new project, there were no expectations
whatsoever, which enabled me to just let my inspiration guide me
without any (outside) pressure."
As Ayreon fans have come to expect from Arjen, the music of Guilt
Machine ranges from dark and heavy to atmospheric and melancholic. But
Guilt Machine introduces some new twists as well, particularly when it
comes to the vocals. Rather than putting together an ensemble cast of
vocalists from the prog, rock and metal scene, Arjen has enlisted the
talents of a single alternative rock vocalist, Jasper Steverlinck.
How did Arjen get an alternative rock vocalist to switch genres and
sing on a prog rock project? "In the beginning, it was hard to
convince Jasper to sing on this album, because he comes from a
completely different musical background," Arjen said. "He didn't even
know what prog was, but we've made a believer out of him! What I
admire about Jasper's voice, besides its beautiful clear timbre, is
the emotion and credibility he puts into his performance and his
enormous range. Because this project features just one singer I needed
someone versatile enough to portray all of the different moods, and
Jasper didn't disappoint. And he's a really nice and dedicated guy as
well!"
For Guilt Machine, Arjen also chose to record with a different
drummer, Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree). "Chris was the ideal
choice this time, having both the power for the heavy sections and the
subtle touch needed in the more atmospheric parts," Arjen said.
Rather than the explicit storyline you would expect in an Ayreon
release, the songs of Guilt Machine revolve around a central theme.
Instead of looking outward into a world of fantasy or science fiction,
the songs look inward, exploring the destructive psychology of guilt,
regret and the darkest form of secret -- the secrets we hide from
ourselves.
"At first I asked my partner and personal manager Lori to quickly
write scratch lyrics for one of the songs so I could record some guide
vocals," Arjen said. "I was so impressed by what she produced that I
asked her to write the lyrics for all the songs. I was unable myself
to create the type of darkly enigmatic, open-ended lyrics I wanted for
these songs, my specialty being sci-fi lyrics about sinister aliens.
She definitely gave the songs an extra dimension with her lyrics,
exorcising the demons we both had faced in the past few years. It's
also no secret that I've always been a big fan of her melodic guitar
style, so she also plays all the guitar solos on this album."
Despite these differences, Guilt Machine still has much in common with
Ayreon. The songs are mainly long, "epic" tracks that feature dynamic
contrasts between softer, dreamy sections and powerful, heavy
passages. There are intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, soaring
melodies, and an eclectic selection of instruments -- all what you'd
expect from an Ayreon release.

-Kansas To Perform With Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra At
Patriot's Theater On October 17
TRENTON, N.J. -- The world renowned classic rock band Kansas will
perform one very special concert with the Greater Trenton Symphony
Orchestra at Trenton's Patriot's Theater at the War Memorial on
Saturday, October 17.
After 35 years, Kansas still rules the classic rock radio airwaves and
continues to put on simply spellbinding shows of the highest caliber.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of Kansas' self-
titled 1974 debut, a live DVD, THERE'S KNOW PLACE LIKE HOME, will be
released on October 13. A hi-def for Blu-ray release (mixed in 5.1
surround sound), the show was filmed on February 7 of this year in
their home state (at Washburn University's White Concert Hall). For
this show, the group -- which includes singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh,
guitarist Rich Williams, violinist David Ragsdale, bassist Billy
Greer, and drummer Phil Ehart -- was united with former members Kerry
Livgren (guitar/keyboards) and Steve Morse (guitar), as well as the

Kansas' current tour includes just two performances with an orchestra
-- including the Trenton appearance -- that will re-create the classic

in 1921, was the ideal choice to assist the group.
"The symphony in Trenton has a musical history that spans 80 years,"

In the past eight decades, the Trenton Symphony Orchestra has
introduced the experience of live orchestral music to generations of
New Jersey audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Over the
years, the GTSO performed with some of the twentieth century's
greatest artists, including opera singers Kirsten Flagstad, Lauritz
Melchior, Eleanor Steber, and Placido Domingo, pianists Gary Graffman
and Ruth Laredo, and composer/conductor Maurice Durufle', among many
others. In recent years, the orchestra has performed with or presented
concerts by pop and jazz artists Sarah Brightman, Barbara Cook, Smokey
Robinson, Al Jarreau, Melissa Manchester, and Ben E. King, trumpeter
Doc Severinsen, and actor John Lithgow.
This will be the GTSO's first performance with a rock band. "The
orchestra musicians are very excited about playing this concert," said
the orchestra's conductor, John Peter Holly. "We're always interested
in new musical experiences and this concert will definitely be a new
experience for most of our musicians."
Kansas' popularity continues to flourish, as their classic ballad
"Dust In The Wind" recently obtained gold status as a digital

-Halcyon Way Parts Ways With Vocalist!
The Atlanta, GA based progressive metal band Halcyon Way has parted
ways with singer Sean Shields due to creative differences.
Taking over on vocals for the Nightmare Records recording artist is
Steve Braun, known for his work with Italian progressive-metallers
Ashent, who have released two records via Lion Music.
"I'm really excited and humbled by the opportunity to jam with these
guys, and I'm looking forward to help take the band to the next level
on the new record," said Steve.
"We're very excited about having Steve in the band, he's got a
fantastic voice and will have no trouble whatsoever with the older
songs, he's adding a lot of new life to the material for the new
album, and he's a professional in every sense of the word -- he's got
a great attitude, and our fans will be thrilled with our choice. The
new album is going to be crushing and it will be a great way for Steve
to introduce himself to our fans," said guitarist Zane Matthews.
Halcyon Way are currently tracking the follow-up to A MANIFESTO FOR
DOMINATION, which is tentatively scheduled for release in Spring 2010.
The album is being produced by Jon Bodan & Lasse Lammert, and the
drums are being engineered by Mike Froedge (DoubleDrive, Bloodsimple,
Dixie Incorporated) at Open Sky Studios in Atlanta, GA. The band also
just completed tracking a guest appearance by Pamela Moore of
Queensryche fame.
The band will not miss any scheduled shows due to the move, and is
scheduled to play at Pathfinder Metalfest on October 24, 2009 with
Aska, Twisted Tower Dire, and many other acts. Halcyon Way has
appeared at Rocklahoma on three occasions, Nightmare Metal Festival
II, and at ProgPower USA twice, as well as having shared the stage
with Helloween, Strapping Young Lad, Kamelot, Symphony X, Doro Pesch,
and many others.
Halcyon Way released their debut record, A MANIFESTO FOR DOMINATION on
Nightmare Records on November 11, 2008 to rave critical reviews. The
album was produced by guitarist Jon Bodan with assistance from James
Murphy (Testament, Death, Obituary), and was mixed by Lasse Lammert
(Alestorm). It also featured guest appearances from Jonah Weingarten
(Pyramaze, Avian) and Blaze Pearson (The Souls Unrest).

Unleashing a blast of guitar rock and roll reflective of rock's golden
era of the late '60s and early '70s, Surefire's debut album is packed
with timeless songs and energy for the new millennium. Recorded by
singer/guitarist/songwriter Ben Rice in the band's own studio in
Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, the resulting album is a testament to the
band's DIY work ethic and musicality. Formerly signed to Lizard King

Calling on friends Emiliano Ortiz (guitar), Ben Spinrad (drums) and
Seth Bulkin (bass) the new Surefire organically and effortlessly came

down legendary rock producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin
and The Rolling Stones) asking him to come on board to co-produce and
mix the record. "I listened to a series of MP3s and loved the musical
direction of the band," recalls Kramer. "It was innovative with a
strong look back at the classic rock era." Shortly after Kramer
invited the band out to Los Angeles to complete the album.
Having supported recording artists Arctic Monkeys, Brendan Benson, The
Bravery, The Subways, and Mando Diao, Surefire is building a devoted
following. In 2006, alongside Coldplay, Radiohead and Bloc Party,
Surefire contributed their song "Surrender" to War Child's compilation
HELP A DAY IN THE LIFE, a benefit album to help alleviate childhood
suffering in war ravaged countries. In the spring of 2009, leading up

Essenza was born in 1993, when the guitarist Carlo and his brother
Alex, bass guitar player, started to play in many rock clubs and
festivals of South Italy. At first, other members collaborated with
the band on voice, guitar and keyboards. Luca, the youngest brother,
joined Essenza as drummer and arranger, and enriched the Essenza sound
playing string and keyboards. In this period, their music was an
explosive cocktail of blues, hard rock, rock and roll, and prog rock
with classical Italian rock influences.
After the release of two demo CDs (ESSENZA and ALGORITMO 60, in 1996
and 1998, respectively) they increased the heaviness of the sound and
elaborated an original melodic heavy rock style, inspired to the
monsters (Priest, Van Halen, Megadeth...), with thrash and power metal
influences, but with Italian lyrics.
Kick Promotion Agency signed the band in 2000, and then they recorded
two studio albums: SUGGESTIONI (2000) (containing new recordings of
the songs released on the two demo CDs) and CONTRASTO (2002). In
November 2004 Luca left the band and was replaced by the drummer Paolo
(from the bands Abash/Shade Out). In April of 2006, in the occasion of
the 13th anniversary of Essenza establishment, the band releases XIII
ANNIVERSARY LIVE (full available online), an unofficial recording of a
performance in Bari, Italy, containing original songs and covers. In
2007, the band promotes and distributes the E.P. DANCE OF LIARS,
containing English lyrics (for the first time) and the video clip
"Deep Into Your Eyes." In 2009, the band joins the Armageddoom
Alliance and the independent label Bigmud Records publishes the full-
length CD DEVIL'S BREATH, the completion of the E.P. DANCE OF LIARS.

"How can this band be so damn good while managing to stay literally
unknown?" Trusties have always followed their own path ignoring
various trends happening in the world of music around them. As years
have gone by, the original acoustic prog-folk trio has turned into an
electrified five-piece, and this has brought darker and heavier
elements more and more to the foreground in their music.
Their third effort HUMAN WHEEL was released in June 2009, and it has
been received with praise by the international press. Like its
predecessors, the album has been created without sparing blood, sweat
or tears over the course of six years. The end result is a natural mix
of diverse musical styles, virtuosic musicianship, pristine
soundscapes and most of all great song writing. The guitarist/
composer/producer Oikku Oikarinen describes the genre of their music
as "modern guitar-oriented progressive rock." He also says that it's
not easy to say which artists their sound might resemble to, but
mentions that fans of Rush, Dream Theater and System Of A Down, might
very well go crazy by hearing the music of Trusties.
Although the band in its current lineup is quite heavy and bombastic,
their background as a compact and flexible light-weight unit comes
through nicely in the live settings. The communication with the
audience and between the musicians works well, which guarantees that
their performances will always be unique and contain humour, surprises
and sensitivity of expression. The band just can't wait to get back on
the road again after spending all this time in the studio.

The desire for a world without pain sounds appealing and is as old as
humanity itself. At the same time its also foolish and naive, because
a world without pain is like a day without night, a flush without
studs or a love without dispute. Without dulling no brilliance and
without pain no well-being.
These awareness -- that property needs its negative side, like the
poet its muse -- indicates "P.A.I.N. Management" in their hard, varied
and implicitly progressive "UNIQUE METAL."
Thus meets atmospheric keyboards to brute guitar walls, plausibility
on requirement and melody on aggression, while everything of a
foundation from bass and Schlagzeug is together welded, into which the
singing perfectly embed themselves.
By Markus (vocals), Christian (drums) and Andreas (keyboards) founded,
was the band with Andre on bass and Patrick on the guitar completed.
In the years 2007 and 2008 they played in this occupation many
concerts in the area North-Rhine-Westphalia and they made one's mark
in the local scene, which reflects in hundreds sales of the demo CD
SAVE THE DAY and SAVE THE E.P. 2008. The debut album LOBOTOMY was

Chuck Mosley's New Solo Album WILL RAP OVER HARD ROCK FOR FOOD
NEW YORK, NY -- Rap and Rock music, though viewed through the public
lens as worlds apart, are not as distant from one another as they
seem. The energy, aggression, and valiant spirit make them the perfect
vehicles for unabashed expression, and rap-rock veteran Chuck Mosley
realizes this. He is the embodiment of the unification of these two
musical forces, as well as the various musical influences he has
accumulated as both an artist and an avid music fan. On August 11, he
releases his first solo album WILL RAP OVER HARD ROCK FOR FOOD via
Cleveland-based label Reversed Image Unlimited.
Mosley's return with WILL RAP OVER HARD ROCK FOR FOOD showcases the
Godfather of rap-metal seamlessly blending rock, hip-hop, metal, punk
and funk. Recounting his previous work, Mosley, as he describes it,
would "rant to the beat." On his latest effort, Mosley's musical stew
combines this approach with an exploration of his vocal range. It's
apparent that he chose to let his amalgam of cultural saturations melt
into this new album, which he describes as "just very normal for me."
WILL RAP... was produced by multi-platinum award-winning producer/
engineer Michael Seifert (Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, Fountains Of Wayne,
and most recently Reversed Image electro-rockers This Is A
Shakedown!). Backed by his band Vanduls Ugenst Allliderasy, Chuck was
also joined by a cast of characters including John 5 (Rob Zombie,
Marilyn Manson), Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Drag), Michael
Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and RIU label mate Leah Lou to contribute
to the record. Korn front man Jonathan Davis (courtesy of Warner Bros.
Records), who attributes Mosley as a massive influence, also makes an
appearance on the lead single "The Enabler."
In the '70s, Mosley was just a kid growing up in Southern California
with no limitations on his tastes in music. A musical sponge, he
studied classical piano for 10 years, while soaking up influences from
jazz, rock, pop, and early rap. Eventually signing on to front Faith
No More, he crafted these influences to pioneer a whole new take on
heavy music. Bringing the rhythm and raw emotion of rap vocals to the
riff-laden, chaotic-nature of rock, Mosley became an innovator which
many musical acts would emulate, including Korn, Linkin Park, Limp
Bizkit, and Kid Rock. He would later front legendary hardcore/reggae
group the Bad Brains as well.

-Wim Den Boer: July 10, 1965 ~ September 3, 2009
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Wim den Boer,
bassist with The Cotton Soeterboek Band, passed away September 3, 2009
from a heart attack.
Wim den Boer was a gifted musician, performer and a consummate bass
player.
Wim started his career in Reinforced Concrete and later on in
Aggressor. He was one of the founding members of Abyss and later
joined Jeff & Co., with whom he recorded several successful albums for
in Holland. Wim joined The Cotton Soeterboek Band in 2006, as well as
playing with Silver Dollar and Four 4 The Road.
Statement from the band: "Words are not enough to describe the loss we
feel with Wim's passing. He was so happy with the recent births of Amy
and Daisy, spending time with his family, and looking forward to start
recording the new album this month. We are devastated at the loss of
our friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family
in their time of need."
Wim is survived by his wife Marja, his son Leslie and his twin
daughters Amy and Daisy.

Faust is the brainchild of singer/vocalist Aleister (Ancient, Abgott)
who formed the band in 1992. After releasing a self-titled demo a year
later, the band fell silent release-wise until 2001 when Aleister was
commissioned as a live member of Ancient, and the aptly-titled first
E.P. AND FINALLY FAUST was released independently.
Aleister constructed an all-star lineup and in 2008 brought the newest

INFINITY. The album lineup features both Ghiulz Borroni [Profanatum]
and Luca Princiotta [Doro, Blaze, Clairvoyants] on guitar, Steve

-BraveWords.com reported the Scorpions are working on a new album with
Swedish producers Mikael Nord and Martin Hansen for a spring 2010
release. In the meantime a new DVD entitled AMAZONIA - LIFE IN THE
JUNGLE! is due out next month.
-Slayer's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD is due out November 3 in the U.S. on
American Recordings/Columbia Records. Track list: "World Painted

Just in time for the Halloween season comes Rob Zombie's second effort
in the relaunch of the "Halloween" movie franchise, along with this
suitably creepy soundtrack. I must say there is sort of a perverse
pleasure in hearing songs such as 10cc's "The Things We Do For Love"
and The Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin" sharing space with the
likes of Motorhead's "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch" and Void's
"Time To Die." An interesting set of songs indeed, effectively
creating an ominous mood that I'm sure serves the movie well. Do you
need it? Well, there are some songs on it you have probably heard many
times already and may even have in your collection, but these are
well-recorded versions and are worth hearing in the context presented
here. Sounding particularly good are Rod Stewart's "(I Know) I'm
Losing You" and Foghat's "I Just Want To Make Love To You." You also
have two new tracks by the ghoulishly fun pychobilly outfit Captain
Clegg And The Night Creatures and a pretty eerie take on Nazareth's
hit "Love Hurts" by Nan Vernon. Lots of short bits of spoken dialog in
here which sounds a bit like filler but does remind you that this is a
movie soundtrack, and a scary movie at that. So yeah, this one would
be cool to have in your collection for cranking up on October 31st, as
there is plenty of variety here to keep interest while the songs,
often in strange ways, relate to the subject matter. "R" rated
language shows up throughout so this isn't one for the youngsters.

This band is seriously underrated! Drawing influences from Iron
Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest, Ilium is a melodic power
metal band hailing from Australia. The first track on their album,
"Mothcaste," opens with a powerful and fast melody that instantly
grabs your attention and does not let go for the duration of the song.
The next track, "Hibernal Thaw," outdoes "Mothcaste" and delivers a
fast and very spirited song. Mike DiMeo's (Riot, Masterplan) vocal
style stays within the power metal boundaries, and while it's very
distinguished because of this, it fits perfectly for this album. The
high pitched screams will have you nodding your head in agreement that
this outfit is nothing short of a gifted power metal band. "Tar Pit"
was another song that stood out to me, because it was memorable; it
starts off with a little bit of a darker vibe, but then doesn't
hesitate to start jamming its way up to an upbeat melody. Song after
song, this album just plain delivers what every good metal album
should deliver! I highly recommend this album for anyone who's looking
for talent, energy and intensity in a band. What else can you ask for?

"It ain't over yet," is what Loverboy says on their first track from
JUST GETTING STARTED. Are they right? Yes! So, maybe most of the songs
are about searching for love, chasing love, or love gone wrong, but
it's not at all sappy or sugary-sweet; that's not what this band is
about. In fact, the best track doesn't even have to do with love. "One
Of Them Days" talks about a universal fantasy everyone has once in a
while, of everything going your way, but it never seems to come true.
Be sure to listen to the words of that song. The title track, "Just
Getting Started," has been called the "Working For The Weekend" of the
millennium. It could be, with many similarities to that song and a
beat that pulls you in. Very reminiscent of the old Loverboy sound is
the song, "Lost With You," and the well-written "Fade To Black" will
grow on you quickly. Vocalist Mike Reno says "The One That Got Away"
is the story of his life -- it may be a sad tale to tell, but this
"goodbye" song tells it well. "The One That Got Away" would be the
softer version of "When It's Over" if it were released as a single. If
you listen very closely, you may hear backing vocals by Phil Collen of
Def Leppard on "Stranded" (I still can't tell it is him). JUST GETTING
STARTED is not perfect; the weakest track on the release is "As Good
As It Gets." The band carried the loosely-woven theme of perseverance
and resilience as a complete package down to the cover art, which
shows a supposedly indestructible Teflon-coated heart of steel scuffed
and scarred with a bullet hole. What scores the home run for this band
is that the words and music feel totally fresh, but the essence of the
whole release still has the stamp of the Loverboy sound that we all
knew from the '80s. The band has accomplished with JUST GETTING
STARTED what many of us wish more of our classic rock bands would do
with their current releases. And don't believe the skeptics who might
say the studio work is great, but they can't be this good live. I've
seen Loverboy several times over the recent years and yes, Reno still
hits the notes he did way back when. Many fans will miss bassist Scott
Smith, who was declared lost at sea in 2000; however, "Spider"
Sinnaeve has been a great find for the band and musical complement to
drummer Matthew Frenette. And of course, keyboardist Doug Johnson and
guitarist Paul Dean are still part of the band and their influence is
heard. It's no wonder that Loverboy still holds a record number of
wins (6) in one night at the Junos (1982), and that they were inducted
into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame this year, because this band is
still going strong.

Fusing elements of hard rock and melodic metal in a modern way,
Machines Of Grace has achieved an album that can satisfy metallers and
fans of rock at the same time. You know the album has got to be good
right off the bat, because we see drummer Jeff Plate (Trans-Siberian
Orchestra, Savatage, Metal Church) and lead singer Zak Stevens (Circle
II Circle, Savatage) putting their expertise and experience to good
use, creating a fantastic rock/metal album. The music has an easy-
going kind of feel. This could be described as progressive metal, and
possibly power metal in some ways. The music is memorable with catchy
choruses. The guitars crank out some good riffs, but it's nothing too
hardcore. The vocal style is clean and coherent, making singing along
easy. It's clear that these guys are very talented with their
instruments and that's evident on every song. It's an album that you
can listen to for a few times in a row and not get tired of it. I
think this album has a very wide appeal. Definitely worth checking
out.

These guys are just plain brutal! While the album runs on the short
side, it packs a death metal punch that'll knock you out. I instantly
thought of Cannibal Corpse when I heard the first song, so if you're a
Cannibal Corpse fan, I'd definitely recommend this. This band is the
kind of death metal that's darker, grittier and scarier than some of
the others. The drumming does not disappoint, blistering away at the
insane speeds that death metal is known for. "Raw" is a song you must
hear, because it really showcases the band's talent and will instantly
get you banging your head. The vocal style is much like you might
expect -- that deep, growling, and grunting sound, sometimes deviating
with a higher pitched scream. The album keeps up its fast pace,
keeping you thoroughly entertained for its duration. This band could
seep into the black metal sub-genre in a way. So, if you're
bloodthirsty for a decent death metal album, give this a try.
