Musicians Institute Awards Honorary Degree to Guitar Legend Steve Vai

Vai Was Keynote Speaker For The Graduating Class 2009

HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Musicians Institute awarded an honorary Doctor of
Music degree to legendary rock guitarist, recording artist, producer,
and composer Steve Vai. The award was officially conferred during MI's
summer graduation ceremony held on September 18 at L.A.'s Wiltern
Theatre.

After first achieving prominence as guitarist for the late Frank
Zappa, Vai has gone on to win multiple Grammys, repeatedly top
critics' and readers' polls, and earn gold and platinum records while
becoming the personification of contemporary guitar virtuosity. His
latest concert DVD, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, is set for release
September 29th on Favored Nations.

Describing why MI selected Vai for the honor (only the second awarded
in the school's history), Vice President of Education Beth Marlis
said, "Steve Vai has not only inspired countless musicians around the
world and played a major role in the evolution of modern rock guitar,
he also embodies MI's ideal of the artist-educator who combines

legendary drummer Carmine Appice, featuring a compilation of 24 of the
best Guitar Zeus songs. CONQUERING HEROES hit the streets on August
25th. The double-disc set showcases the prolific talents of many world
renowned rock guitarists. Queen guitarist Brian May's extraordinary
lead guitar stylings are featured on the prolific song "Nobody Knew
(Black White House)," a prominent track on the Guitar Zeus
compilation.

"As soon as I heard the track, I thought it had a very haunting
quality to it," remarks Brian May about the song "Nobody Knew (Black
White House)," "evoking the '70s in some ways perhaps, but with a very
modern slant. I also found the backing track itself very powerful and
appealing, driven by Carmine's very recognizable style so I was keen
to play on the track straight away, despite being incredibly snowed-
under with work at the time!"

Author, clinician, drummer... Carmine Appice first came to prominence
as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla
Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist
Tim Bogert, adding to the group's high decibel sonic assault. After
five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues
rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty.
Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the
power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart's
backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as "Do Ya Think I'm
Sexy?" and "Young Turks." In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul
Stanley's first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray
Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has
recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He was the
drummer for the bands King Kobra and Blue Murder, and toured with Ozzy
Osbourne.

Appice first created Guitar Zeus in 1995 when he recruited some of the
most famous guitarists in the world to be a part of his project, from
Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent to Brian May (Queen) and Slash (Guns N'
Roses), even tennis legend John McEnroe. Songs also included guest
vocals by Dug Pinnick and Edgar Winter. Throughout the late 1990s,
three Guitar Zeus CDs were released to worldwide critical acclaim.

"Guitar Zeus for me was an amazing experience, working with so many
great guitarists," Appice affirms. "It was fun picking out songs for
each. Each guitarist loved the songs. It was awesome. I would do it
again in a minute even though it was alot of work. I consider these
drum tracks to be some of my best drum performances in my career!"

The remaining members haven't made a standout track since Moon passed
on.

But as far as the Mod movement which had guaranteed The Who's early
success, and the Pete Townsend composed musical depiction of that
movement, QUADROPHENIA are concerned, the story has been twisted,
complicated and misunderstood, but remains endlessly fascinating. The
band, the movement, the album, the second wave, the movie and now the
30th anniversary of the latter two, all make for a story that needs to
be told in depth. That is exactly what this film does.

Using recently unearthed archive footage from the early movement,
rarely seen performance and interview footage of The Who, plus expert
contributions and comment from a panel headed by friend of Pete
Townsend and the band's "Mr. Fixit" throughout their career, Richard
Barnes, and featuring; mod experts Paolo Hewitt and Terry Rawlins; the
ever delightful owner of Acid Jazz records, DJ and broadcaster, Eddie
Pillar; members of Mod revivalists The Chords and The Purple Hearts;
Who biographer and 1960s expert, Alan Clayson and a host of others.

The film also includes a wealth of news reports, film and video clips,
location shoots and much more, all set to a backbeat of music from the
finest British band of the Mod era -- The Who.

This year's Sweden Rock Festival made a new attendance record with
35,200 visitors. Next year only 33,000 visitors will be admitted to
the festival area.

Sweden Rock Festival 2009 was a great success, making an attendance
record and receiving loads of accolades from audience, artists and
media alike. For instance, British Classic Rock Magazine called Sweden
Rock Festival the world's greatest outdoor festival, and German Rock
It! claimed that Sweden Rock offers the greatest festival experience
in Europe by far. Nevertheless, having made our own evaluation, we of
the festival board have decided that it is still necessary to restrict
the number of tickets for purchase. This is to ensure that the
visitors will have the optimal festival experience.

No more than 33,000 visitors will gain admittance to next year's
festival, compared to this year's attendance figures of 35,200 people
and last year's number of 33,200 people.

The festival area will have the same size as this year, and the number
of staff, public convenience, etc. will also be on the same level as
previously.

The four-day tickets will be released on October 1st at 9.00 hrs.

The first 3,000 tickets will be sold at a reduced price.

Kimberley Dahme - CAN'T A GIRL CHANGE HER MIND?

Kimberley was noticed by Tom Scholz and Gary Pihl of the band Boston,
when they came to a club performance looking for a new drummer. Tom
Scholz, Boston's founder was impressed with Kimberley's singing and
asked her if she could play bass. A couple of months later on January
1st, 2001, Kimberley was on stage at the Fiesta Bowl in front of
80,000 people and millions of TV viewers. This was her debut with the
band and her first time playing bass guitar professionally. Tom Scholz
liked her song-writing so much that he included a song she wrote
called "With You" on the Boston album CORPORATE AMERICA. "With You"
will be released again on Kimberley's new CD CAN'T A GIRL CHANGE HER
MIND? Four tours later with Boston have made her one of the fan
favourites and a standout example for women who Rock. Kimberley Dahme

The Daniel William Bones-directed performance video continues the
band's use of apocalyptic imagery as featured on their latest album,
ATTITUDE, and celebrates the return to action of vocalist Athera who
was sidelined earlier this year from a near-fatal heart attack that
stemmed from a previously undiagnosed heart defect.

Released in May, ATTITUDE was recorded in Norway and mixed at Studio
Fredman in Sweden. The album features guest appearances by Chuck Billy
(Testament) and Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir). ATTITUDE entered the official
Norwegian charts at 28, the band's highest placement to date. "Ten
years and still the same five guys," exclaims vocalist Athera with
regards to the band's long commitment to their music. Working for the
first time worldwide with Candlelight Records (previous albums only
saw release by the label in the U.S.), bassist Memnock notes, "We now
have the backing of one label worldwide and this is going to make life
a lot easier for us. And we hope that finally we get to play to our
American fans."

Formed in 1998 by drummer Tjodalv (then of Dimmu Borgir) and guitarist
Cyrus (then of Satyricon/Old Man's Child), Susperia released its
debut, PREDOMINANCE, via Nuclear Blast in 2001. The band's much-
acclaimed second album, VINDICATION, followed in 2003. After signing
with Norwegian label Tabu Records in 2004, the band released its third
album, UNLIMITED, later that year.

A powerful live act, the band has consistently remained focused to the
stage. With numerous high profile support, headline and festival
appearances, one of the band's most cherished experiences thus far
remains supporting the newly reformed Testament in late 2005. The
dates would culminate in the release of the band's Norwegian charting
mini-album DEVIL MAY CARE, followed by the group's fourth album, CUT
FROM STONE, in 2007. Unfortunately due to financial constraints two
tries to visit the U.S. to support the Daniel Bergstrand-produced
album during 2007/08 would set back the album's overall sales target
but the band remained committed. Touring Europe including numerous
dates with W.A.S.P., the band's ambitions stayed and continue to
remain in tact.

Susperia recently completed a run of Norwegian dates; the shows
followed the band's appearance at Norway's Steinkjer Festival which
served as the return of Athera to the stage. Commenting just prior to
the June festival Athera noted, "I can't wait to get back on the road
again. It's something that at one point I thought I would never
experience again, so I'm grabbing this opportunity with both hands."

-Random weirdness... I created a wishlist on my TiVo to look for
Spinal Tap stuff, when BACK FROM THE DEAD came out earlier this year.
I was about to delete it when I figured "Let's give it one more try."
Lo and behold, it turned up a rerun of "The Nanny." Why, you say?
Well, the 1997 episode featured Fran Drescher pulling double duty,
appearing as the titular character and also her "This Is Spinal Tap!"
character, record company exec Bobbi Flekman. Very surreal.

-Jan W. let me know a recent issue of the House Of Hair newsletter had
a bit on those Dokken/Norton commercials. Apparently the ads
originally were to feature Styx, but that band "pulled out," and then
Dokken was approached.

Wow, I am impressed! Every time I listened to The Few Against The
Many's album, SOT, I liked it even more than the previous time around.
It's a shame that there's only 35 minutes worth of music, because I
was left wanting more. The vocal style is reminiscent to Cannibal
Corpse; it's very heavy and brutal, and a nice blend of death and
black metal vocals. In fact, that is the way I would classify their
genre: something between death metal and symphonic black metal. The
drumming is fast and is executed in such a fashion that only death
metallers are capable of. Six of the eight songs are sung in Swedish,
while the remaining two are in English. I was amazed by the frequent
twists and turns this album shape shifted into. There are times where
the mood is very upbeat, having you rocking out in seconds. Then there
are times where the soundtrack takes you into a dark, mysterious
realm. This album offers everything that you could want in a metal
album: thundering drumming, deep, growling vocals, lightning fast
guitar playing, rhythmic guitar playing, and some other eccentricities
to be uncovered along the way. Listen to "Skapelsens Sorti" to get
yourself acquainted to the band. For those that like a good piano
number, try "One With The Shadow." Check them out; they are definitely
doing something more creative than other death metal bands.

END OF RIDE REVISITED is a collaboration featuring Marty Paris and
Kelly Keeling, along with contributions from an impressive group of
melodic rock luminaries such as Don Dokken, Carmine Appice, George
Lynch and Al Pitrelli. Originally released in 2006, this repackaged
version now includes five bonus tracks. END OF RIDE REVISITED is a
fairly laid-back affair overall, with lots of ballads of the Beatles-
flavored Dokken variety, but the guys do flex their hard rock muscles
at times, particularly effective on opener "Tears Of Heaven,"
instrumental "I Learned From The Inside," bluesy "These Days"
(featuring a nice solo by George Lynch), and Guitar Zeus outtake
"Don't Disturb The Occupants." The slower material is well written,
notably the late '80s vibe of "Life," "End Of Ride (Suite)," and a
couple that might sound familiar -- "I've Found" (originally on
Dokken's LONG WAY HOME album) and E.L.O.'s "Telephone Line." Kelly
Keeling puts in a typically strong vocal performance throughout,
comparable to his work with John Norum and Michael Schenker. So yeah,
a little "heavy on the lite side" so to speak, but worth a listen,
especially for fans of Keeling and '80s melodic rock.

Hailing from Australia, Pestilential Shadows aptly defines themselves
as "Anti-human plague black metal." While it may seem too specific a
title to label themselves as, it helps give you an idea about what
they're about. The vocal style is muted, and almost sounds as if it is
being sung a distance away from the instruments. Personally, I think
the faded vocals takes away from the intensity of the songs. It makes
it harder to hear the lyrics. For the most part, the vocal range and
style stays the same, which doesn't make too big of a difference since
the vocals are rather anemic anyway. The drumming is fast, but not
over the top. The instrumental style is rhythmic, with the guitars not
really offering any soloing, but harmonizing with the drumming to
create a very blended sound. For example, with the song "Beautiful
Demise" you've got slightly upbeat drumming, yet with that slower,
somber kind of feel to it. The singing is stretched out -- stretching
out certain words and singing them slowly. At times, the vocalist
takes long pauses between verses. At the end of the song, there's some
brief piano playing. The songs don't bring much diversity. The closest
thing I can think to compare it to would be Venom. I'd say fans of
doom metal and black metal may want to give this a listen.
