Yeah, this lineup proves how unhip I can be (and I'm going to Steely
Dan/Michael McDonald tonight). I'm a Doobies fan....and pre Michael
McDonald which is what this fine band of American rock is back to.
Of course I didn't want to show up @ 11am in Adams Cty (which is the
pit of Colorado btw and the smelliest with its livestock &
industrial industries there). Sure the park/fairgrounds seems like
an oasis in the middle of all that shit but its still in the middle
of all that shit. And it was 101 fucking degrees there yesterday.
Do you think the wife would leave the 1000+ higher elevation, lower
90's temp with breeze, pool, and general fine Colorado summer
comfort for Hawgfest? No way of course. Not only did the lineup
make her cringe but she said there is no way she wants to be in 100
degree temps with a bunch of drunk skeeters all day.
Doobies were gonna play from 5 to 7 pm. I didn't want to see the
other bands although I was a bit curious about the lesbian Led
Zeppelin cover band. So I show up during the last half of set by
Logger Jim's favorite band, Foghat. Never saw these guys before and
they couldn't have played it any better as Foghat and all. The
heavily dominated biker crowd (IT WAS THE HAWGFEST!) ate it up. A
foghat aficionado told me it was all the original motherfuckers in
the band except the lead singer, who seemed so Foghat but still too
young to be an original & who was a dead ringer in the voice dept
for classis Foghat. He told me the original singer died of throat
cancer.
Now what concert can you go to & see a guy in a t-shirt that
says "Tell your tits to stop staring at my eyes", concession stands
featuring boutiques like "Stitches For Bitches" , head shops, barrel
of porn (full of porn DVDs for 10 bucks ea), unsolicited boob
flashes (and some surprisingly good ones), and more bikes than
cars. Ok, Sturgis I guess.
The Brothers came out blasting with "Dangerous". They played a few
songs from their last album (Brotherhood?) and a new instrumental.
Also on the set list: an instrumental of Dark Eyed Cajun Woman, Down
In The Track, Neal's Fandango (one of my faves), China Grove, Take
Me in Your Arms, among several more hits they dished out in rapid
fire. No Sweet Maxine, Road Angel, Without You, or Disciple though:(
Hard to believe that Tommy Johnston was so fucked up after maybe his
best Doobies album, Stampede, that he had to leave that tour and
subsequently gave Michael McDonald his career. Sure McD had a
career as a session guy with Steely Dan (who he is in town with but
did not show up last night) & others which is how he got the Doobies
gig in the first place. But Johnston's health problems made his
entrance into the Doobies as an emergency. All of a sudden one
night, he was there & Johnston was gone. McDonald was singing
Johnston's songs (as was Pat Simmons). He hadn't written for the
Doobie's yet....he was just a last minute emergency reserve. And
this was never announced. I remember seeing the first show I think
after this change and I was wondering where in the hell TJ was and
who in the fuck is this raspy voiced keyboard dude. I was pissed.
So although I did grow to like some of the MMcD Doobies
era....Minute by Minute, Living On The Fault Line...that stuff
wasn't bad. I really like "Chinatown" but I just wanted TJ back in
the group and leading – not McDonald. So it is surprising today
that TJ is not only back, but looking so much younger than Simmons &
everyone else. He's in the best shape of his life and can pass for
Doobie Brother circa the 70's. Still, a fantastic guitar
player...especially with those sweet guitar harmonies with Simmons &
McFee. He belted out vocals & whipped the crowd like a young man
and the true leader of the Brothers – back where he belongs. I also
like the newer replacement musicians like the bass player, who seems
like a Tiran Porter on steroids.
