On a hot Sunday afternoon, the Doobs turned in one of the best
performances that I've ever witnessed them play. It was Hawgfest -
an all day biker gathering with 5 bands: Lez Zepellin (a female Zep
tribute band - surprising good), The Groove Hawgs (a local act),
Quiet Riot (80s glam rock with lots of f-bombs), and Foghat (all
their songs sounded the same except for 'Slow Ride'). The temps were
in the upper 90s & there was little shade to be had as the bands
tore through their sets. Quiet Riot's lead singer Kevin DuBrow even
enticed a few ladies to show some stuff & many did - yes it was that
kind of day at Hawgfest 2006!
At 5:30, the headlining Doobies came out (without the Harley
revving - that was strange - especially being a Harley crowd, they
would have loved it). The crowd was a drunken, sweaty mass by then
and were very loose & ready to rock. The boys worked it & showed
that without question they were the most talented on the bill with
tight harmonies, killer licks & Mark's sax blowing up the place.
They played 2 songs (I won't mention them by name for those who have
yet to see them this year) that I have NEVER heard them play live
before!! The crowd was the loosest & loudest I have ever heard at a
Doobs show & it was the first show I've seen where Tommy didn't have
to say something like "Let's get on up people!"). Right after the
band left the stage, Pat ran back out & started signing autographs
in the front row!!!!! Unbelievable!! Simply an incredible show by an
incredible band. And the fun doesn't stop. Tonight I'm seeing
Michael & Steely Dan at Red Rocks!!!

Subject: [doobiefans] Re:Doobies on a desert island
On the radio here in England we have a programme called Desert
Island Discs.
According to The Guiness Book Of Records it is the longest running
music programme in the history of radio!
Guests are invited to imagine themselves as castaways on a desert
island and asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would like
to take with them:discussion of their choices gives a review of
their life.
You are also allowed to take one book(excluding the Bible or other
religious work and the works of Shakespeare which are already on the
island) and one luxury item.
Years ago of course it was 45 vinyl records. So I thought wouldn't it
be
interesting to imagine if you were castaway which music tracks you
would choose. To make it more interesting we could have the 8 'A'
side trcks as Doobie tracks and 'B' sides as non Doobie tracks.
The 'B' sides could be any artist or band but obviously something
special to you because lets face it you might be castaway for a long
time!
It does make you think exactly what you would like to have with you.
Also, with the music tracks it makes you remember back to when and
where you heard a particular track.
So whether this will make a good discussion I don't know!
Well here goes----------these are my 8 Doobie tracks.
1.Listen to the music.
A friend at college asked me one day if I had heard of a band called
The Doobie Brothers!! He let me borrow his LP Toulouse Street.
I drove my parents mad playing it at all hours, I think it had large
grooves in it when I gave it him back.
I don't want to think how many years ago that was but all I know is
I am so glad I got my hands on that LP!
2.China Grove.
Was hooked on The Doobies and bought The Captain and Me, played
this to death as well
3.South City Midnight Lady.
This is such a cool number, I just wished I could play it on my
guitar.
When I met Pat he explained it was open tuning, just a pity I never
got
a demo.
4. Another Lonely Park Another Sunday.
Me and my wife had not long met way back then.
Bought 'What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits' and we both listened to
it all the time.
5.Neils Fandango.
6. Long Train Running.
Reminds me of the Las Vegas concert with the beach and The Doobies
on a stage surrounded by water!! Was I dreaming?
7. Dangerous
Wolf trap DVD
8.What A Fool Believes
Had this played on the radio for my wife who was in hospial.
And my nominations for the non Doobie tracks are-----------------
1.Pretty Woman---Roy Orbison
I played drums years ago and a band who I had never heard of called
me one Saturday to ask if I could play at a gig that night. I said
ok and
this was the first number played. We had never rehearsed together, I
was only 15 years old at the time and was so nervous playing the
opening drumming.
It seemed eveyone in the place was watching me but it went ok.
2.Horse With No Name---America
This was and still is one of those numbers I love, it never seems to
age.
Just wished the band would come to England!
3.Hotel California---The Eagles
This reminds me of my holiday (sorry vacation) in California last
year.
It was one of the songs I sang at a kareoke somewhere in Arizona?
This was shortly before visiting Las Vegas, seeing and meeting-----
YES-----The Doobie Brothers!!!
Have to thank Chris, Heidi and Linda for all their help.
4.Black Magic Woman--Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac
What can I say about this number. It is probably one of the first
numbers
I tried to play on my electric guitar and failed!
I know Santana played a good version and had initially more success
but for me this is the best.
5.While My Guitar Gently Weeps--George Harrison
Reminds me of The Beatles
6.Boys Of The Summer
Heard this long ago,it reminds me of summer days, driving my sports
car
and having no worries1
I can't stop playing it even now.
7.Albatross---Peter Green/Fleeetwood Mac
If I am going to be cast away on a desert island then this is the
ideal chill out number.
8.Handle With Care--The Traveling Wiilbury's
Tom Petty, Bob Dillon, Jeff Lyn, Roy Orbison and George Harrison.
What more can you say?
The book I would take--Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The luxury item--my electro-acoustic Takamine 12 string guitar.
Any comments?
Ken
