THE DRAMATICS - THE SINGING GROUP
The Dramatics originally formed in 1962 in Detroit, MI as the Dynamics, but had changed their name by 1967, when they recorded their first hit, All Because of You. The group did not break through until their 1971 single, Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get, broke into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. (That record was certified gold by the R.I.A.A. in December 1971.)
At this point the Dramatics consisted of Ron Banks, Elbert Wilkins (who passed away in 1992), William "Wee Gee" Howard (who passed away in 2000), Willie Ford, Larry Demps, and James Mack Brown (who passed away in 2008). Shortly after the success of their first album, Howard and Wilkins left the group, and were replaced by L.J. Reynolds and Leonard "Lenny" Mayes. Through the 1970s, the group appeared on Soul Train and continued to have hits, including the #1 R&B record, In The Rain, Toast to the Fool, Me and Mrs. Jones (a cover of the Billy Paul hit), I'm Going By The Stars In Your Eyes, and Be My Girl.
The Dramatics also were featured singers on the Snoop Goggy Dogg song, Doggy Dogg World, which appeared on the 1993 debut album, Doggystyle. The group continues to tour and presently consists of Reynolds, Banks, Ford, Winzell Kelly, and Michael Brock, who replaced Lenny Mayes, who passed away in 2004. The Dramatics’ Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get appeared in the 2005 documentary Sunday Driver, as well as the critically acclaimed movie Wattstax.
Most recently, the Dramatics just finished recording their new studio album, and Bad Girl is the first single slated to be released early in 2009
