yes, a steel snare drum will definitely ring, but if you like a tighter, more
controlled sound you can try an Evans Genera Dry (single ply) or an ST Dry
(2-ply)
also make sure the bottom head is nice and tight, and the top head is medium
tension.
also, as an alternative, you may want to consider either a moongel or 2, or a
zeroring on the top head.

personally, i love a ringy, steel snare sound. i want a keplinger! :)
Paul Dickinson at UDRUM is making me titanium snare. it'll be a bit drier than
steel, but should be LOUD!

Subject: [Drummer] Just bought a new snare

Hi everyone. I just bought a new snare. Its actually the first snare I've bought
that doesn't come with a kit. Its a Pork Pie Big Black 6.5 X14 steel snare. I
tuned it up yesterday and I am getting alot of ringing . Is this normal for a
steel snare? I still have the stock heads on but I did purchase new ones that I
am going to put on today to see if that helps. Should I try tuning it lower? I
don't know I'm newer to the drums and still trying to find my sound. Please
help.If this ringing is normal it may not be the drum for me. Thanks, Tom

Here's a contagious recounting of someone getting turned on to one of my
favorite types of music, too.

There are lllots of beats going on, for drummers to groove with.

(And this way you might find out about Derek Sivers, as well-a major player
in the music & music-business worlds!)

Thanks Honey,

I've seen your kit in a couple of your wonderful videos. It's tough when you
lose a drum in a small setup...er, I mean a minimalist setup. I know you
carried on and finished the tune.

I always carry my drum key on my car keyring...I have for years.

Do you have a drummer's survival kit of some sort?

Worst thing to happen during a live gig was breaking a snare drum head in the
middle of a song! I switched to my highest pitched rack tom and finished the
song. The rest of the band turned around to see what the hell was going on. Once
they realized my situation... and the fact that I didn't miss a beat, they got
into finishing the tune. I quickly changed out snare drums and changed the head
during our next break. It pays to have at least one decent backup snare, if you
can afford one.

Since then, I always tote one case with my extras. My standard emergency items
include a complete set of new replacement heads for all drums, extra sticks,
felts/washers/ cymbal nuts, assorted nuts/washers/ allen screws/etc., 600#
capacity convertible hand truck, 2 Shure SM57s, face towel, king-sized sheet to
cover my kit between shows, ibuprofen, Rolaids, wet wipes (don't ask), gummi
worms, rechargeable AAA & 9v batteries & charger, cell phone recharger, my own
pillow (hotel room pillows are horrible, am I right!?) and any musician's best
friend...a roll of duct tape, gaffers tape, 100mph tape...in black, of course.

Because I also own the PA system, my kit includes extra audio equipment
accessories, 2 multi-tools, electricians tape, extra guitar/speaker/ patch cords
& extra mic cords, band aids, and miscellaneous items necessary for common PA
emergencies.

How about you?

Good one! I notice far too many venues don't want to give out change

my choice of pain meds is Advil gel caps extra strength if you have sore
muscles pair that with a good muscle relaxant and you'll be good to go, just
don't plan to drive until you know how it effects you some people it hits
like a sledge hammer

Add to that
a tensor bandage
Band-Aids
eye drops
gravol
anti-diarrhea medication
laxative
Bug spray if you have an outdoor gig and sunscreen if it's during the day
chemical cold pack
safety pins

Cathy

my choice of pain meds is Advil gel caps extra strength if you have sore
muscles pair that with a good muscle relaxant and you'll be good to go, just
don't plan to drive until you know how it effects you some people it hits
like a sledge hammer

Add to that
a tensor bandage
Band-Aids
eye drops
gravol
anti-diarrhea medication
laxative
Bug spray if you have an outdoor gig and sunscreen if it's during the day
chemical cold pack
safety pins

Do you have a drummer's survival kit of some sort?

Worst thing to happen during a live gig was breaking a snare drum head in the
middle of a song! I switched to my highest pitched rack tom and finished the
song. The rest of the band turned around to see what the hell was going on. Once
they realized my situation...and the fact that I didn't miss a beat, they got
into finishing the tune. I quickly changed out snare drums and changed the head
during our next break. It pays to have at least one decent backup snare, if you
can afford one.

Since then, I always tote one case with my extras. My standard emergency items
include a complete set of new replacement heads for all drums, extra sticks,
felts/washers/cymbal nuts, assorted nuts/washers/allen screws/etc., 600#
capacity convertible hand truck, 2 Shure SM57s, face towel, king-sized sheet to
cover my kit between shows, ibuprofen, Rolaids, wet wipes (don't ask), gummi
worms, rechargeable AAA & 9v batteries & charger, cell phone recharger, my own
pillow (hotel room pillows are horrible, am I right!?) and any musician's best
friend...a roll of duct tape, gaffers tape, 100mph tape...in black, of course.

Because I also own the PA system, my kit includes extra audio equipment
accessories, 2 multi-tools, electricians tape, extra guitar/speaker/patch cords
& extra mic cords, band aids, and miscellaneous items necessary for common PA
emergencies.

How about you?

I'm a rock climber and tried playing in climbing shoes, if you have a pair I
recommend giving them a try. It's better if they have some wear, new one's grip
the pedals too much. No weight to them at all though, helps with speed.

Dedicated shoes, no mud, no stones, only tromping though spilled beer.

OK I got a new MusiciansFriend catalog in the mail the other
day and listed in it was "Drumming shoes." With absolutely no
wright up.
What up with these? Why would I want to shell out $35+ for a
pair?
thanks

Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree plays every live gig barefoot.

However... they travel with their own "stage carpet" and one of their crew
vacuums it every night right before they go on stage. It's kind of funny
actually, in a pampered artist sort of way.

Hey,
OK so now I know why I should buy those shoes. :)
Got another question: When you are playing out do you wear
these "drumming shoes" just in the venue to play or do you wear
them to the venue and setup and tear down, play and then drive
home in them?
I guess what I want to know is do you wear a dedicated pair of
shoes to play?
I'm with you Sistah - I would NEVER play barefoot in a bar/club
- not with all the crap I've seen on stages and floors!!!
