Hendrix was the most innovative instrumental genius the rock era produced, a wizard guitar player whose sense of technique never overwhelmed the blues and rock roll spirit that was the underpinning of his genius. Hendrix improvised with the fervor of a born jazzman; he philosophized like the most cosmic rocker; but ultimately he brought everything down to basics and built his most elaborate structures from the rudiments of soul. a reflection of his experiences on the chitlin circuit, where he cut his teeth. Although his public image suggested a frivolous playboy hippie, a druggie whose musical ability was 90 percent intuition and very little intelligence, the reality is far different. On the records released in his lifetime-the first three with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys and Smash Hits-every effect is deliberately placed, with an overriding vision that is simply as impressive as any-thing in pop history, easily the equal of the Beatles' on Sgt Pepper's. It is virtually pointless to speculate upon what Jimi Hendrix might have done had he lived because his music was never headed in a single, simple direction. Hendrix would certainly have done more rock and more fusion, and would have made some attempt to perfect the funk style suggested by Band of Gypsys. It's the reminder of his achievements, those we mere listeners in a way can't imagine, that makes his loss so enormous.
