The mystery of SASSAFRAS SAM by George Grace   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #8713 of 9740 |
Hi all, I need your expertise.

Alright, so I'm getting ready to list a ragtime piece on eBay called SASSAFRAS
SAM by George Grace, and I came across this reference:

"Wenrich wrote so many rags that he was given his own line by McKinley in 1908.
The cover shows five rags in the series: three by Wenrich, one by Dolly Richmond
and one (this one) by George Grace. Publishing records show that the Dolly
Richmond piece is, in fact, Wenrich. We don't have the same proof for the Grace
piece, but in all likelihood it is by Wenrich. Two pieces of information add to
the likelihood: 1) No other piece of music has ever been found by this composer
- and 2) There was a popular vaudeville actress named "Grace George" at the
time, and this is just the kind of joke Wenrich liked to play.

So my question is, has anyone ever heard of a composer named George Grace, or is
this person's point valid, that it is probably Wenrich.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I'm listing the peice, as well as Percy's
DIXIE KICKS rag, this afternoon.

Keith
