Yes, it IS very tedious. As for the timing problem, since I only
did the rolls I really like enough to invest the time, I knew the
music well enough and had the timing in my head. So that part was
easy.

have him in your honky-tonk LP list, Bill). The LPs I have are The

Kunz was born in Allenstown , Pennsylvania, but made his mark from

Hi, Bob.

Yes! Elite Syncopations is a 24-hour ragtime internet radio station
that I operate at:

http://www.ragtimeradio.org

Anyone with a high-speed internet connection should be able to tune
in. Until I became too busy with school obligations this past year, I
hosted a weekly 2-hour live program on Tuesday or Thursday evenings
that ran with a simultaneous chat room session on Dan Mouyard's
website. So, you tune into the audio stream, then join the chat room
to discuss the music playing (or anything else!) with the other folks
in the chat room. Many ES list members drop by and it's always a lot
of fun. If you're able, I hope you'll join us!

Take care,
Bryan

Bryan....
Got a chance to go in and listen to Joe Jordan and Joe Lamb on
your radio. I need to spend more time navigating the site because I
was getting obnoxious Wal-Mart commercials which I can do without.
Is this a subscription site, or how does it work? I will go back
later when I have time and read about it. I also got a message
about disabling my pop-up blocker, but I was able to avoid doing
that. But it sounds like a great station. Thanks for the link.
Also, I clicked on the 'buy' button to see what came up. It
seems to be connected to Amazon, and when I go to Amazon it says
those items cannot be found. So why have a 'buy' button?????

Hi Bob.

This is the same show that for much of the time this group has been
active has had weekly notices on until recently, complete with links
to a chat room and links to the web site so one can hear. I know that
somewhere in the archives a couple of years back we had a discussion
about the subscription costs, Bryan noting that it was necessary to
hear the broadcasts in stereo and without commercial interruptions. I
believe all the information you'll need is at the host site,
LIVE365.com, and the cost is reasonable per year if you plan to listen
at least a couple of times per month.

Bryan changes the loop on a regular basis, and puts new tunes in quite
often, so it doesn't get too old listening to old tunes. Granted, the
site needs updating because Bryan has his hands full with other
things, but I know this is one of his great passions that he provides
for us.

When you click on the listen link on his site you'll see a rather
prominent area to the right of the screen that starts "Become a VIP"
and the benefits underneath. That is where you subscribe.

Hope that is helpful.

Finest, Bill E.

I'm very unqualified to answer the question, but given my boundless
chutzpah (hey, it's gotten me this far), I'll try anyway. What I do
is try to identify and isolate the measure - or part of the measure -
that I can't get. Then, I try to figure out what fingering would work
for it, experiment with different things, try to make it work somehow.
If it's still difficult, I practice it over and over and over and
over until it's right. The key for me seems to be practicing very
very small bits at a time.

Mind you, that doesn't mean that I will get it right after all that,
but it at least increases the probability of that blessed event
occurring.

Oh, and in my experience, if a piece is haunting you, the only cure is
to learn it. Been there done that. That's how I learned Bohemia,
Pork and Beans, Easy Winners (which is still stuck in my head!),
Champagne, Music Box Rag, and quite a few others. I still don't get
Pork and Beans exactly right every time, but it's getting closer.

Just received a copy of from my exchange library of "William Bolcom Piano Rags" (1991, Marks) ($12.95) distrib. Hal Leonard, 78 pages, that contains 8 individual rags plus  The Garden of Eden and The Ghost Rags. I haven't had a chance to try any of the tunes out yet -- still working on the other rag books that are due July 8.

On checking with Amazon I notice there is a "Complete Rags for Piano: Piano Solo" (pub. 2000), 128 pages, that contains 22 rags, list $18.95 ($12.89 discount price)  as well as a disk, "Bolcom -- Piano Rags" list $36.98 (no discount) of the same 22 tunes.

Apparently this guy is a very busy contemporary composer. Is he any good? How is he regarded?

You're kidding, right? That's not a question you expect to hear of
a Pulitzer Prize winning composer with 3 Grammys...

Let's just say we've heard of the guy, he's good, and he's highly
regarded. :)

He has a national if not world-wide reputation as a composer (check
wikipedia or other sites). Most people who know of him would
probably not associate him with ragtime, but he got into the ragtime
scene in the 70's and contributed many wonderful compositions to our
little world, most famously Graceful Ghost Rag.

I'm not that familiar with most of his rags, but taking the Ghost
rags as a cue, they are quite a bit more cerebral than your typical
fare, and much more difficult to play. For example, don't even
bother with "The Poltergeist" or "Rag Infernal". Watch performances
on YouTube and leave it at that.

Is he any good?

He has so many classics, both of his recorded performances and his
pieces, that he can't be ignored. Sorta won a couple of great awards
here and there as well.

Of note are, besides the obvious and ubiquitous Graceful Ghost (I have
recorded all three ghost rags, and Poltergeist still haunts me since
it is so bloody difficult), are Seabiscuits - the trio introduction is
very clever, Tabby Cat Walk - not too difficult, California Porcupine,
the beautiful Epitaph for Louis Chauvin, and the one he did with Bill
Albright, the brilliantly silly Brass Knuckles.

You can find out the history of the Ghost Rags with some information I
got from him at http://ragpiano.com/pbmidi16.shtml

Hope that is encouraging.

Looking for a song called "Remembering You" (1971) by Roger Kellaway and Carroll O'Connor. It was used as the closing theme for "All in the Family" -- the Archie Bunker classic. Any clue to digital downloads or TV

It's listed as "Vocal (With Piano Solo) Stride Style.

I misplaced my folio that only contains the tune -- but I had the foresight to copy ONLY the first page (easier on the piano's music rack!)

Phil,

I found this a couple years ago with great difficulty and will look
for it when I get home.

The music I bought, however, is not arranged as you hear Kellaway
playing it on the TV theme. It's either a super easy piano version
or it's just the changes - I can't remember. I came up with an
arragement that reasonably approximates the TV version, though, and
I can send you a midi file of it sometime next week when I get a
chance to create it.

I assume that posting it to the group would be a no-no due to
copyright limitations?

By the way, I bought a CD recorded by Kellaway that includes this
tune and was disappointed to hear that he had a completely different
take on it in that recording. I'm sure he got tired of playing it a
thousand times for fans of the show and just wanted to give it a
fresh sound, but sometimes it's better to just give the people what
they want, especially if I am the people and I shelled out $15 for
your CD. :)

Years ago, I worked as MC in a NY piano jazz club. Roger appeared
there. He did the tune every night and it sounded the same as on
TV. The only thing about it is that you only heard the first eight
bars or so on the show. The rest of the tune is quick lovely.

Hi, All.

Well, according to the poll, it looks like a toss-up between
Wednesdays and Thursdays for the live broadcasts. I already have
plans for tonight (Wednesday), so for this week, at least, let's do
the live broadcast tomorrow night, Thursday July 3 at 8:00 PM

different night, but I like the idea of returning to Thursdays.

As usual, I'll supply the live stream of music on Elite Syncopations
Radio: http://www.ragtimeradio.org

All listeners are encouraged to join the simultaneous chat at Dan
Mouyard's website: http://music.mouyard.com/forums/
(You'll need to click on the tiny "Chat" tab about a third of the way
down the page.)

If you've never tuned into one of the live broadcast and chat
sessions, why not give it a try? It's always a lot of fun. It's
completely free. Anyone can listen to the ES Radio station, but to
enjoy much better sound quality and no commercial interruptions, you
might want to consider becoming a Live365.com "VIP" member. It costs
about $5 per month, and if you can spare the five bucks, I think
you'll find it's well worth it. Plus, when you listen as a "VIP"
member, a fraction of your monthly $5 is sent back to ES Radio to
help reduce my broadcasting costs. (Currently, for every hour that
each VIP listens, ES Radio gets about 1 cent back--not a heckuva lot,
but if enough VIPs listen, it can add up to a few dollars per month
off my broadcasting bill!)

Hope to see you all tomorrow night!

Agree. I used to watch reruns and wait for the closing credits so I
could hear the song. On certain episodes, the credits would run
longer and they'd go into the interlude theme for a couple measures,
so I knew there was more to the tune.

The music I got has the whole thing. While the main theme has
sentimental value and crowd appeal, I think I like the interlude
theme even better - it's got some neat changes.

There is a feature story with a picture of the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra in the Wall Steet Journal. The reporter sits in on at the recording session and  talks about the George M. Cohan authentic rag-time era arrangements that will be used. Turns out the Paragon bandleader acquired original arrangements from the era.

The account goes into the backstory of the Rick Benjamin, the founder and conductor of the band and how he got hooked as a an 8-year-old  kid on ragtime era songs when he found a 1917 Victrola in his grandparent's garage and cranked it up. This during the Gerald Ford era.

The reporter offers some austute observations, during the recording session, among which:

"The first things you notice are the numbers' exceptional tunefulness and syncopated rhythmic infectiousness."

The story of how Rick stumbled upon the library of Arthur Pryor is an
extraordinary one. And so is the fact that he was kicked out of the
Julliard School for playing ragtime!

William Bolcom is one of this country's premier composers, who works as comfortably in the 'vintage pop' realm as he does modern classical music.  Since the 1970s, he's had an on-again,off-again semi-touring show with his wife, Joan Morris, doing what amounts to cabaret shows.  On the flip side of this is his career as a classical composer, particularly of keyboard music.  I recall, for example, he was tapped to compose a piece for a significant Organ competition in Dallas.  My own first exposure to  Bolcom was a ragtime LP he made back in the 70s, with William Albright, on which they played both their own compositions, and the works of Joplin, Lamb, and others (if memory serves).

There was a time, back in the 70s, when that, along with The Entertainer, and a few other tunes, were sort of 'must haves' for the average joe with a player piano....and Todd's absolutely correct, it truly IS a lovely tune when heard in its entirety.

Incidentally, in the 70s, QRS put out what I consider to be some really REALLY nice arrangements, of what at the time were some of the current pop tunes.  If you happen to come across some of these, like "Lara's Theme" (Dr. Zivago), Simon & Garfunkle's "The Sound of Silence" or Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle", you might actually be pleasantly surprised at the level of musical craftsmanship, and the surprisingly intricate musical effects their arranging staff at the time was able to achieve.

I own two vinyl discs of Bolcom playing rags (piano solo), both on the
Nonesuch label. The playing is really first class.

One disc, copyright 1971, is called "Heliotrope Bouquet - Piano Rags
1900 - 1970." H-71257. The tracks are:

1. Turpin "A Rag-time Nughtmare"
2. Joplin "The Easy Winners"
3. Joplin/Chauvin "Heliotrope Bouquet"
4. Lamb: "Ethiopia Rag"
5. Scott "Pegasus"

1. Joplin: "Wall Street Rag"
2. Robers "Pork and Beans"
3. Bolcom "Graceful Ghost"
4. Bolcom: "Seabiscuits"
5. Albright/Bolcom: Brass Knuckle

The second disc, copyright 1974, is called "Pastimes & Piano Rags."
H-71299. The tracks are:

1. Scott: "Efficiency Rag"
2. Scott: "Modesty Rag"
3. Scott: "New Era Rag"
4. Scott: "Troubadour Rag"
5. Scott: "Great Scott Rag"

1. Matthews: "Pastime Rag No. 1"
1. Matthews: "Pastime Rag No. 2"
1. Matthews: "Pastime Rag No. 3"
1. Matthews: "Pastime Rag No. 4"
1. Matthews: "Pastime Rag No. 5"

Last I checked these were not out on CD, but it's been a while since
I've checked.

Agree! Agree! When I was a kid, I had no interest in any of the
thousands of rolls with black boxes stacked in every corner of the
house, but the red QRS rolls were the fun ones (that we were allowed
to play!). Really cool arrangements of:

Theme from Batman
Mission! Impossible
Music to Watch Girls By
Up, Up in the Air
Sunny
When You're Hot, You're Hot
Spanish Flea
Whipped Cream
Jesus Christ, Superstar

Come to think of it, I'm not really sure why we had any of those -
none of that music is of any interest to my dad. They were probably
a free sample collection from a visit to the QRS factory or
something...

But yeah, these weren't just throwaway arrangements to fill a market
need, they were full and intricate and went the extra mile. Batman,
for example, had a killer boogie bass, a couple of sweet jams after
the first run through of the verse, and a key change at the end with
a really neat riff, ending with a classic major 7 chord with
augmented fifth (I don't know my chord notations.) It was my
favorite chord for a long time after that, before I started
listening to Oscar Peterson :).

Subject: TV themes folios -- Remembering You
philkeys25
Send Email Send Email

After about 50 hours of surfing the web -- checking out the "new" music web stores and the used book stores on the web I have located a book with "Remembering You" in it. Found two titles; one of them available from an Amazon merchant.

Funny thing is, I had tried all kinds of searches with a variety of browsers with "Remembering You - Kellaway" Kellaway is the writer; to differentiate from the Chapman version, which is all over the place.

It was only Dumb Luck (and his brother the piano tuner Trialan Error) that I was able to find it at all. In my travels I remember encountering a leadsheet version of the tune on one of the sheetmusic download sites and so searched for "Remembering You - leadsheet:" that I came up with this page.

I have ordered a used copy from one of Amazon's associate merchants. Alibris -- who has serviced me in the past -- didn't have a copy.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been trying to locate a copy of the closing theme from "All in the Family" which I own and misfiled. I don't think the book was purely a TV theme book because as I recall it had "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer" in it. Which is probably why I bought it in the first place. Less bulky on the piano rack than NY Public Library Joplin opus. Just a good piano book from the 70s. And playing through it one day I found "Remembering You." I liked the turnaround introduction and photocopies -- hence how the first page got separated from the rest.

Now that I have ordered this used copy of the folio, it will probably turn up when I am looking for a guitar book in my archive.

You may want to find a classic tune from the ragtime era that was used as a television theme, And if you know where to look, you search is shortened.

The page is called Sheet Music Folio Books
turns out it is a sub-directory of the site and lists all the stuff categorized:

http://www.classicthemes.com/sponsorship.html

The below address takes you right to the TV sheet music folio:

http://www.classicthemes.com/50sTVThemes/sheetMusicBooks/themeFolioBooks.html

and is lists several collections. What is better is that it lists the television themes by TV show.

This requires a manual search -- you've got to eyeball the entire page until you find the TV show/tune you need. But I found it highly readable and only had to scan 2/3 of the document to find two folios that had my tune.

Hope this saves somebody all the hours I wasted in the finally successful search

Phil Lloyd
