Bjork's "Vespertine" featured mixing skills of Intellligent Dance
Music (IDM) darlings Matmos. For the most part, though, their odd
sonic tinkering was apart of the background of the album's lush,
orchestral feel. German duo Laub offer what that collaboration
might have sounded like, minus the orchestra. An ominous
architecture of hisses, burbles and synth-washes recalls the best of
Autechre and Pole. The female singer warbles sensuously, turning
German into smooth, swirling rivulets. The vocals humanize the
background, creating a hybrid pop-electronic noise music. The album
encompasses both extremes of sound, from the popish "Wortspur" to the
abstract, stuttering "Temporaries." "Filesharing" is a perfect and
painless introduction to the complex world of IDM.
