The Low concert last night was excellent. In a
live setting, the perfect meshing of Alan and
Mimi's vocals becomes apparent. His, plaintive
and yearning, hers serene and crystalline. The
spirituality in the lyrics (which focuses on the
struggle) is illuminated. They write postmodern
hymnals: stately, majestic songs about mundane
and profound matters. The music is
mesmerizing--they never go for cheap "ethereal"
atmospherics. The beauty shines from within. As
simple as Shaker furniture, as beguiling and
evanescent as the fairytale temple outside of
Silver Spring, this was a great show. One of the
best I've seen in the past year. I'm digging up
out my Low collection for today.
