Hem at the Black Cat, Washington DC, 7/18/2003   Message List

Ethereal Americana-band Hem opened for Vic
Chestnut last night at the Black Cat. They were
wonderful. The singer, Sally Ellyson, has a
marvelous instrument; its tone is so achingly
pure. The music was as rich and rustic as a
tapestry. Kudos to the two
mandolinists/guitarists, Steve and Gary, and the
steel pedal guitarist. The atmosphere was very
living room-friendly, the musicians looked
relaxed. This belied the wonderful music they
effortlessly produced.

In addition to performing material from
"Rabbitsongs," Hem did some new material, and
some covers of songs by Springsteen and Randy
Newman. (A covers e.p., entitled "I'm Talking with My Mouth," is being sold on
the
road).

Don't miss them if they come to your town. Their
folk and country music hints at a mythic,
mystical American spirit.
