Hi, my name is Steve Miller and I've been trying to teach myself the
shakuhachi for a few months, all the time wondering about how to get
tuition in the UK. This group seems to have answered the question quite
nicely though - head down to London. I live on the mid north east coast
near sunny Cleethorpes so it won't be too much of a trek.
In terms of study I divide my time between acoustic guitar (my main
instrument) the shakuhachi and learning/teaching martial arts. Much of
what I learn stems from samurai technique. The 1.8 is about the same
length as the short staff - also about the same as a Filipino escrima
cane. So in a bizarre way I know far more of the shakuhachi as a
rumored komuso weapon than as a musical instrument. I feel I need to
redress the balance here and learn the music!
