Greg Brown at the Birchmere - Alexandria, Virginia
Great show, as always. Jason Wilber played a nice opening set. I'm not
familiar with his songs, but I'll make a stab at a set list.
Whatever Happened to Bo Diddley's Money, Lost In Your Hometown, Lazy
Afternoon, 69, In Her Veins, Great Uncle Jim Had a Fiddle, and 67
Satellite. These titles are guesses.
Greg seemed in a very warm and mellow mood - quite talkative and
friendly. He opened and closed with John Prine songs and did a number
of other covers, including a rip roaring Folsom Prison which really got
the crowd moving, even though he sat throughout the show. He played a
very battered looking Gibson which was described to me as a Walnut
Sunburst. The accompaniment by Wilber was very low key and delicate -
you hardly noticed him a lot of the time.
The songs were:
Souvenirs
Kokomo
'Cept You and Me, Babe
Blue Car
Homeland (I Want My Country Back)
Preachin' the Blues
Goodwill
One Wrong Turn
Folsom Prison
Kern River
Jesus and Elvis
Angel From Montgomery
Poet Game - Encore
Fashion statement: black jacket with a patterned cowboy-style yoke,
gray ribbed tank top, silver hoop earring, black Prada-esque ankle
boots. The hat deserves a special write-up. A fashionista friend
described it as a circa 1986 Vans welders hat pulled low over his
forehead with the bill on one side. It was a combination of leopard
print and purple stripes - wish I had a picture to post! Hope to see it
again tomorrow night in Annapolis!
