Thanks, Jon, for the review. Here's one I had already written, so will send
it on too.
Unlike the Greg at Red Wing earlier this year where he sat in communion with
the audience and filled that sweet Sheldon Theatre (and my head) with song
after song all night, the Greg at the Fitzgerald on Friday night was more
about his "performance." Oh, he sang wonderfully, but while standing and
moving around on the stage as if he owned it, sometimes strutting, sometimes
a backward soft shoe, sometimes lifting his knee up to his chest as he
played and sometimes bending low, low while jamming with Bo as only those
two old buddies can.
Greg had control over the stage and the audience as he preached and played
and condemned and charmed. His second talk-song was a direct condemnation
of the war in Iraq and the administration (the most blatant I've ever heard
from Greg) and I don't know what to call it, other than "It's All About the
Oily." There were loud cheers and applause. (If anyone else has heard this
and knows the title and/or words, I'd love to have them.) He dedicated "You
Are A Flower" to Pam in the audience, played the harmonica while singing
"Kokomo," and talked about his church, Bob Feldman and his grampa.
He wore his baggy tan-brown suit with an un-tucked, unbuttoned-at-the-neck
short-sleeved white shirt with an untied orange tie. Of course, it wasn't
long before the jacket came off. He had on brown shoes and a tannish brown
fedora-type hat. He wore horn rimmed glasses and now and then, when his hat
came off, you could see his hair is growing out again.
Another first for me was Bo opening for Greg. I was so taken-aback and
impressed, I didn't get a setlist for Bo.
I'm not the best at setlists because I don't write very well in the dark and
am always in such a trance that I forget if I wrote the last one down or not
or even where I wrote it (I'll have to practice). But, here goes as best as
I know:
Worrisome Years
It's All About The Oily
Joy Tears
Preachin' the Blues (Son House)
Ina Belle Sale
Down at the Mill
Kokomo
Treat Each Other Right
You Are A Flower
Cold and Dark and Wet
Slow Food
Hacklebarney Tune
-----------------
Encore
Here in the Going, Going, Gone
Folsom Prison Blues
Greg seemed happy and maybe a bit triumphant to be back at the Fitz. His
interview earlier in the day with Kari Miller on MPR's Midmorning was
fabulous. I think you can stream it.
