In these parts, some head north for their medicine, but I'm different.
I headed south yesterday in a glorious mid-60 degree autumn day to get
my prescription. Me and 649 others had an appointment with Dr. Brown at
the sold out Aladdin Theater. Been depressed and stressed for awhile
now and needed another dose. I knew when I saw a place called Dream
Cafe a couple miles from our hotel, everything was going to be all
right. My mental health improved dramatically when my old friend
searched me out before the show. And the hugs I shared with his
beautiful damsel was the best medicine I have had in years. I can't
wait for another refill of that stuff. Okay, maybe the hugs were just
one way, but they were healing for me.
Greg's Oregon crowds have an energy that uplifts me. They are so
friendly and receptive and attentive and rambunctious all at the same
time. Joe Price opened and wowed the crowd with his boot stomping
blues. He plugged his guitar in and danced like his trousers were on
fire. Mr. Happy Pants is quite the entertainer and guitar player. His
happiness is contagious. Talk about good meds. Joe worked up a pretty
good sweat and brought out his wife, Vicki, who slowed down the tempo
for a couple songs. I would definitely go see him again if he came
around.
Greg came out in a white T-shirt, jeans, some sort of black dress shoes,
shades and no hat. Word has it he didn't wear shades in Eugene, but
everybody there is too cool or stoned to share their comments. I am
always amazed how buff the guy is. I wouldn't want to meet those biceps
in a back alley. My old body is getting a little brittle and a hug from
him would probably crush me. He was in prime form last night. Moe
thinks he sounded better than ever in both his vocals and guitar
picking. I can't disagree. He senses the vibe of his audience and
responds. Thank you Portland for being so enthusiastic!
Setlist (As my scattered notes suggest)
Pound It On Down---I think Joe's opening set got him pumped up
Oily Boys---The crowd participated with cheers
Treat Each Other Right
Almost Out Of Gas
Boomtown
Coneville Slough
Kokomo-- How come nobody whips off their tube top for me?
Skinny Days
Evening Call
Blue Car
Hacklebarney Tune
He Reached Down---Talked about his church in Kansas City and dropping
busses and medicine instead of bombs in Iraq
Whippoorwill--Not the sweet bird song, but the one with lyrics about how
annoying they can be. I loved it
Canned Goods---Slow tempo and lots of beans
e: Long Gone--- With Joe Price
e2:????? --- Joe had his Crazy Legs working again and Greg put one ankle
on his knee as he played backup to Joe's lead. I had so much fun with
it I have no idea what the song was. It may have been an old
traditional blues tune.
Had a great time all around again. That was some good medicine.
