Am 'bout to catch a plane for home but wanted to add to & clarify
John's post (it *was* Son House's 'Preachin Blues' John!).
I was fortunate to get to see not one, but two of my favorite
musicians ever play back-to-back shows at one helluva venue.
Octogenarian jazz pianist Mose Allison played a good 20+ of his
repertoire for a full house at the OTSOM Friday night. (I cast a
glance or two around looking for Greg but don't think he made it-- he
wouldn't have been disappointed). Moses' daughter Amy opened with a
set of self-penned tunes in a country flavor that belied her Long
Island upbringing but was refreshingly entertaining. Her voice
reminiscent of Iris'....high-pitched, sweet-n-twangy,unforgettable.
Tonight's show was as John said, short and sweet with a lot of covers.
Early on Greg remarked how he seemed to be in *free association*
mode, covering Mose Allison's 'Ever Since The World Ended followed by
his own tribute. John Prine, a native Chicagoan in there too. Lots of
yakkin' it up,variations on his beloved themes of religion, from the
Dalai Lama to the old Iowa Pentecostal Church to St.Mark's in
downtown KC),Iris & other great musicians, the sad state of affairs of
our government. The highlight of the night for me was Greg's cover of
Randy Newman's 'Louisiana' -- a gem of a song to which Greg's soulful
version invoked in me what must run close to the emotions our
brothers and sisters still struggling in the wake of Katrina must be
feeling.
I've seen Greg perform oh, getting to be quite a few times now,and
every show has been different--like snowflakes, each one unique, and
I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you kindly for yet again another
fine, fine evening, Mr.Brown.
Humbly,
