Thoughts: Pieta Brown opened, and it's sure a treat to see her grow
as a musician. Her sound keeps getting more full and she seems to be
playing w/ more confidence too. Definitely a treat to see her
perform, w/ the added bonus of getting to witness Bo's sublime guitar
work during both her and Greg's set. I really can't get enough of
Bo...
Since I know there's interest out there...the fashion report: GB came
out in black leather pants, black t-shirt, the 'classic' GB shades,
big hoop earrings, and a bug furry Russian hat (think, Spies Like
Us). Does the word 'resplendent' work here? I say yes. Anyway, yet
another example of only something Greg Brown could pull off. The
girls in my party were impressed....
The show was excellent--lively, straightforward, no-nonesense. A bass
player (John Penner?) joined Greg and Bo and provided some nice low
texture to the songs. Not much banter--although he did go off on a
nice long soliloquy about how if you're throwing a party and not much
is happening and it's a little lame (sorry, weak transcription, but
you get the drift) then the best thing you can do to lively things up
would be to put in one of Bo's records, they'll get everyone moving
and feeling good. Then later if maybe you're making a little time
with someone from the party (again, sorry for the transcription...but
you get the drift), then maybe a good idea would be to put in one of
Pieta's records. And then he wrapped things up by saying, and 'if you
want everyone to feel bad, put in one of my records...'
On a personal note I was very pleased w/ Greg's performance--it
wasn't my favorite setlist but he really seemed to be putting a lot
of effort and care into the songs. Unfortunately, I don't get to see
as many shows per year as I used to (living in Iowa City was a
gift...), but among the more recent shows I've caught in the past
couple of years Greg's vocal delivery had changed somewhat. Maybe a
little more talk-singing rather than singing. And while I still revel
in the shows, I must admit that I prefer a little bit of sonorous
Greg mixed in w/ the gruff stuff. And that was on display on
Saturday, and it was sweet. Early and Driftless were definitely big
treats...
Last bit of indulgence before I sign off. One of the things that I
always love about Greg Brown shows is how my mind wanders to good
places. Good ideas, good reminders of how things can be and should
be. And all critiques and fashion reports and opining aside, that
element never seems to fail. So grateful that we still get to
experience this, and can't wait for the next chance.
Happy Holidays to everyone
