(Laurel was 20 minutes ahead of me on the post!)
Greetings,
Greg came to Chico, CA last nite for a show at the Sierra Nevada
Brewery. Having seen him many times over 20 years, lately I'm been
feeling frustrated after attending his shows feeling that he's not
been interested in performing. For the past few years, I've often
felt that he mutters and mumbles through the songs, rarely connects
with the audience and appears generally disinterested in what he's
doing. Last year when he passed within an hour's drive of here, I
decided it wasn't worth making the effort. It had come to that. My
friends have joked with me and say that Greg and I are
having "issues."
So it was an exciting thought to imagine seeing him in such an
intimate venue that I particularly enjoy. My wife (who's been feeling
the same as I) and I were anxiously awaiting to see how he would be.
And like a handful of times over the many years where I'd been
feeling down about Greg's shows only to be lifted out of the funk
into the heavens of light by hearing a amazing new song or
experiencing a fantastic show, last night's show was one for the
ages. It was the most enjoyable show for me since 2003 when he turned
in a memorable set under the stars at the Kate Wolf Festival. Last
night's show with Bo was like a spiritual awakening. He was IN the
music. He and Bo sitting next to each other rolled through a set of
music that was highly charged and at the same time so grounded in the
goodness that Greg can deliver. Our love has been rekindled. Here's
the song list:
1. Maddie Price
2. Oily Boys
3. Whatever It Was
4. Treat Each Other Right
5. Just By Myself
6. Think About You
7. Kokomo
8. Going, Going, Gone (!!!)
9. Little You
10. He Reached Down (Iris Dement)
11. Like A Dog (Greg broke a string during the song and ended the
show after)
Encore: (using Bo's acoustic guitar)
12. Not Dark Yet (Bob Dylan)
13. Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash)
Bo opened the show with a great 7-8 song set. In all of the years,
this was the first solo-set of Bo's music I'd heard. It was a treat
and watching Bo during his set was like watching both he and Greg
inhabit the same body. Bo mentioned he had a new album coming out in
April.
Greg came out looking like everything just kinda stuck to him the
last time he walked through a thrift store. A spotted bicycling cap
with a turned-up bill, a silk jacket over a green dress shirt with
Elvis-like collars that on one side kept lifting up and flapping
against his cheek, a blue print tie tied very loosely around his
neck, and leather boots with the pant leg of his jeans on one side
tucked into the boot.
It was a very good night. A table of friends, pint glasses filled
with the local beverage (Greg commented on the number of tanks
attached to the brewery and said it looked more like a refinery. He
thought that maybe one day we could run our cars on beer.) It was a
treat to see listers Laurel and Pete at the show as well.
Thanks Greg and Bo for another real good time!
