Hello Folks and fellow fans,
Here is the skinny,
Venue Campbells Tavern Cloughanover Headford County Galway, located 15 miles
from Galway City, capacity 115.
Iris DeMent played on the Saturday night (could not get a ticket) it was a great
night by all accounts Greg joined her for one song and John Prine joined her for
3 songs.
Now for the Sunday night, a local singer songwriter Noellie McDonnell played
support watched and listened to by Greg and Iris who seemed to enjoy very much.
Audience were very appreciative and listened very well. Short intermission then
the main event.
The venue is small and intimate lots of timber and great acoustics and the stage
was low and with a big backdrop of a gold sun face with rays spreading out on a
black material. Fashion report Seedsaver baseball cap, tinted round glasses,
pinstriped dress trousers, suspenders (or braces as we call them here) John
Prine white tee shirt (borrowed from John Prine) and a guitar borrowed from Iris
(Greg's clothes and guitar went missing from flight). The fact that he was
playing with Iris' guitar which seemed to be very small in his hands did not
faze him at all and he was very calm and friendly and lots of between song chat
about Ireland, George W (who he said is now in power for 34 years or so it
seems), his daughters and lots more casual chat.
He was playing solo and seemed very comfortable to be there for his first visit
to Ireland.
Set list as best as I can remember is as follows;
1. Down In The Mine Merle Travis
2. Big City Merle Haggard
3. Folsom Prison Blues Johnny Cash (great version very bluesy)
4. Oily Boys
5. Whippoorwill (great chat about these birds and their call)
6. Upstairs and Downstairs (song one of his daughters sang to him)
7. Pound It On Down
8. Ella Mae
9. Canned Goods (Greg spoke for 5 minutes or so about his 2 grandmothers and his
Irish roots)
10. Driftless (with Iris)
11. The Train Carrying Jimmy Rogers Home (with Iris)
12. Inabella Sale
13. Rexroths Daughter
14. Souvenirs (with John Prine)
15. Angel from Montgomery (with John Prine) these were super and Greg said it
was his first time playing on stage with John!
16. Mattie Price
17. Walking Daddy
18. Preaching the Blues (Son House)
19. He Reached Down (with Iris)
It was a fantastic gig and Greg was very calm cool and collected chatting to
people (lots of between song chat) was going fishing yesterday (probably for one
of those English trout?) and said he is looking forward to coming back again.
The only small fly in the ointment is that management would not allow any
recording of the gig, Mitchell (Greg's manager) was wary of upsetting the owner
as he said that when it comes to "vining" and recording Europe is very sticky
about this.
However Campbells have recorded the gig and Noellie McDonnell who played support
will try to get a copy of the gig and if he does I will offer on the vine.
So all in all a great night and great music and a great audience a great after
gig party which went on till daybreak, what an experience.
I will keep you all posted on the recording.
Best regards to all,
Joe McMahon
