I'm sure most, if not all, of you know about this, but there is a very odd (in
my opinion) Greg Brown music video for the song "Sadness" at the link below.
Enjoy!

Thanks to Blue Grass, I got this one in the mail today.

I have three copies of this ready to send out to the first three folks who send
me their
addresses. Here are the details:

Greg Brown
East End Cultural Centre, Vancouver BC
19990905

CD 1:
Carrickfergus
The Foggy Foggy Dew
Samson and Delilah / Pretty Polly
Marriage Chant
Lullaby
Ever Since the World Ended
Mose Allison Played Here
A Little You
Fishing with Bill

CD 2:
Real Good Friend
Spring and All
Tuning
'cept You and Me Babe
Two Little Feet
Enough
Dark-Eyed Molly

A few comments:
Marriage Chant has a nice bluesy guitar riff.

Lullaby has a much more pronounced beat than I have heard before.

This is the first time I have heard Greg's version of Ever Since the World Ended
(which I
have had on Mose Allison's CD of the same name since it was first released--one
of the
first CDs I ever bought!), and it is really striking, with a very open approach
on the guitar.

Fishing with Bill has the British trout; if you have never heard the British
trout, then you
want this! (Does he still do the British trout?)

An absolutely burning version of Two Little Feet, boy does he get DOWN when he
plays
this one.

In contrast, Enough is quite mellow (slower than the studio version?). But it
slowly gets
downer and dirtier in the course of the song. Very cool.

I discovered Greg through the Putamuyo sampler a friend gave me a couple of
years ago.
Since then I've stumbled across a few more and really like his phrasing and
presentation.
Glad to see there is following to join. :o)

How do I learn more about VINE and participating in trades? I can offer
graphics and burning
but have nothing of my own to offer.

Yet.

Is there a songbook or a web site with basic chord/tab/lyrics? Even an old
diabetic with
neruopathy can want to learn to play some of these - Blue Car in particular.

From his Lyrics, there are questions I'd love to ask Greg - which are none of my
business (but
I am a nosey old cuss).

Thanks for being here.

That's really neat. I thought it was quite good, albeit weird. It's

What are the questions you would like to ask Greg that come from his lyrics-
there are folks on this list with a ton of history about hisowner. Might be
fun to get that thread going again, long as we aren't poking into stuff that
is too private. Welcome to the band of brownies.

Thanks so much for this. Has anyone ever seen the movie this comes
from? Here's the IMDb description:

Dream with the Fishes (1997)
Terry is a suicidal voyeur who doesn't seem to be able to kill
himself. While preparing for jumping off a bridge, he meets Nick who
ends up saving his life. Terry discovers that Nick is terminally ill
and doesn't have much time left. Scared by the lack of time, Nick
offers Terry a deal he can't refuse: Terry will become the
beneficiary of Nick's life insurance or, since money doesn't matter
to Terry, Nick promises to kill him before he dies. All Nick asks is
Terry's help to realize a few fantasies before dying.

Does anyone know if this is a different version of "Sadness" than is
on Poet Game or if it is just an edit. The soundtrack disc looks
eclectic to say the least:

1 River Man Nick Drake 4:16
2 El Diablo en el Ojo Tindersticks 3:33
  3 Sadness Greg Brown 3:45
4 The Word Behind Words Jeremy Toback 4:48
5 Abegail Anne Jeremy Enigk 3:01
6 Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro) Cal Tjader 2:24
7 Blue Angel Squirrel Nut Zippers 4:33
8 The Sad Chicken Leroy & The Drivers 3:00
9 Why Would I Want to Die Grandaddy 4:21
10 Coming Home Ear Two Thousand 2:21
11 I'm Holding You Ween 4:01
12 Billy Away Chaser 3:59
13 Fisherman's Blues Waterboys 4:21

Hi,

I am interested in GB's concert schedule. I live in South Central Wisconsin
and prefer small, personal, local grass roots venues. (I first, and actually,
only, time I saw him it was at the Oak Center General Store in Minnesota, and
will never forget that experience.) I would appreciate any information about
such concerts within a 200 or so mile radius. I saw that he just recently
performed in Viroqua, which is pretty close to where I live.

   Thanks.

OK. Now THAT explains the strangeness of the video. It just
didn't seem like something Greg would have approved of. But
now that I see that bizarre story line, it makes sense. I
don't watch movies, and that description makes me feel like
I'm not missing much. ;-)

I have seen this film and have the soundtrack. The film is a nice
indie film - not the greatest film ever made, but a good one. The
soundtrack is decent - the best tracks are GB, the Waterboys, and Nick
Drake. The GB cut is the same one from "The Poet Game".

I decided to eat the pie.. mmm.. it was good. The show was great (my
first live GB, although I've been living with Greg's music for 20+
years.) Greg looked like any ordinary Maine-r, in fact I think he was
cruisin the streets of Camden before the show, watching the annual
x-mas parade and hanging out in a joint down by the bay. The first
song, "Cold & Dark & Wet" pretty much describes the weather last
night. The rain was changing over to snow as we drove home.

I hooked up with the show promoter and he got permission from Greg for
me to record. I did. Here's the setlist

Greg Brown, Camden Opera House, Camden, Maine. Dec 2, 2005

Cold & Dark & Wet
Angel From Montgomery
Kokomo
Better Days
Spring Wind
Whatever It Was
The Train Carrying Jimmy Rogers Home
Brakeman'S Blues
Skinny Days
Kern River
Folsom Prison Blues
Bucket
The Little Sparrow (Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies)
Not Dark yet
Harvest Moon
Encore - He Reached Down

about 140 minutes recorded. (AudioTechnica AT822 mic --> Sony MZ-R700
minidisc --> audacity) I'd like to gather a few more live Greg Brown
shows. The 9-23-05 show looks pretty cool.. How do I go about trading
mine for that or some others?

Oh yeah.. Bob Feldman was right on.. Thanks all for the advice.
Thanks Greg.

First show, and you "captured" it. Nice work! See, we told
you to ask him. ;-) My only question is the setlist seems
a little short for 140 minutes of recording time? What are
we missing here? You can offer the show up for trade, and
folks may respond to you (privately/not on list). And next
time, try hooking up to the soundboard when you get permission.
The results are usually substantially better but you may need
special connectors and cables.

It's quite easy to shut these down.

1) Highlight and -copy- the item #
2) Click on 'Help' and type "bootleg" into 'Search' box
3) Click on the first item about bootlegs
4) Go to the bottom of the page where is says "Report Item"
5) Report the item

They usually have them shut down within 24 hours or sooner.

I've already reported this one. And I also send a nasty
little note to the seller as well. ;-)

This is a regular administrative message regarding the GBrown-L
discussion group at Yahoo. It is also sent to new members when they
subscribe. Please review it so you understand of the guidelines for the
operation of the group. This message also contains information on
unsubscribing and changing delivery options and has links to other
information.

[***Updated November 29, 2003 -- See below.***]

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

YAHOO GROUP "-OWNER" ADDRESS [***modified November 29, 2003***]

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address. If you reply to a message via this web
site, be sure not to select that "To" address.

Also, if you receive an administrative e-mail message from an
owner/moderator via Yahoo, you cannot reply to that message directly
because it will not be received. Instead, reply to the owner address
at the bottom of this file.

Was the seller of this from the list? If not I think this show show was
floating around as a "bit torrent" so anybody could have downloaded it.

Does anyone have this saved in it's original FLAC format?

No. I don't think so. He also had a Gillian Welch bootleg
that I reported to Ebay. I didn't recognize his email address
or the one bidder.

Greg closed his Meadville Pa. show last April with a song that started:

Well they Rushed me and they pushed me,
They bashed me and they Bushed me,
They threw me out back on the garbage pile,

The chorus went:

I'm OK, I'm all right
At least I will be when might no longer makes right,
I'm all right, I'm OK,
But I'll have to say I've seen some better days,

The last verse:

Well they stole the lights,
They started fights,
Thsy pissed all over the Bill of Rights,
They told us we had best not make a sound,
They pulled a coup,
They pushed it through,
But I ain't gonna' let the bastards get me down,

I was wondering what the correct title of this song is and if Greg has
played it at other shows.
