This is a regular administrative message regarding the GBrown-L
discussion group at Yahoo. It is also sent to new members when they
subscribe. Please review it so you understand of the guidelines for the
operation of the group. This message also contains information on
unsubscribing and changing delivery options and has links to other
information.

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address. See "YAHOO GROUP '-OWNER' ADDRESS" below
for more information.

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

YAHOO GROUP "-OWNER" ADDRESS

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address, even though Yahoo may still offer this
address in the "To" or "Reply-To" fields of messages. This means:

(1) If you reply to a message via the Yahoo Groups web site, be
sure not to select that "To" address.

Greg in Redwing. I've never done this before (written a review of Greg's
performance), but, what the hey, there's a first time for everything. I've
seen Greg at least a dozen times and this was one of my favorite
performances. And, that's even with a couple of distractions, like the
theatre getting my seats mixed up and taking my 13-year old granddaughter to
see Greg for the first time. (I think she liked it, even though it is way
out of her genre).

I liked it because Greg was so relaxed and seemed so happy. He even smiled
a lot. He played almost non-stop, but his conversations were as witty as
ever, saying he walked around Redwing before the concert and noticed that
there was a church in a department store (there was!). He noted as how you
have to keep a careful watch on the devil, then sang "One Wrong Turn." He
also commented that he once bought a pair of shoes there (Red Wing shoes)
but that was "shit" before they were a "boutique" item.

The Sheldon Theatre (a beautiful place) was sold out. The audience was
kinda quiet, except for applause (I'm used to a few yells and catcalls along
the way). Greg even asked a couple of times, "Are you okay out there?"
Maybe his concert reflected this mood, because although he was dressed in
the same brown baggy suit I saw him in a year ago in St. Cloud, I liked this
performance much better. I would call it mellow. Greg's voice was in great
form and his guitar playing too. And, his persona was definitely "blues"
with his flat felt brown hat and dark glasses, he could have been Ray
Charles. He sat during the performance and moved with the music with rhythm
and grace, sometimes bringing his guitar down deep and low and then swinging
it up high as he ended his songs.

As I said, he wore a baggy brown suit with a plaid shirt and pinkish tie.
He had on a brown felt "tam"? and dark glasses. He wore brown loafers. He
kept all of his clothes on until the encore when he came out without his
jacket to show off his wide black suspenders. Must have been dressed for
the Midwest!

I missed writing down the first song (cuz, with granddaughter at my side, I
hadn't committed myself to it and forgot until he was on his third one).
Some of the songs were new to me, so I'm not sure of the titles. They're
indicated with an asterisk. Maybe some of you know the titles.

Pieta and Bo opened. Great concert; he's coming to St. Paul (the Fitzgerald
9/15/06). I'll be there.

Nice review, Rose. Sounds like a great show. I put in
a few possible song suggestions below. Some I don't
recognize either. And great fashion report as well!
Thanks. Just what I needed.

Nice review. I saw him play the Sheldon a few years ago. Wish I would have
gone to this one...

The Sheldon is a beautiful small town auditorium. They did a fantastic job
restoring it (rescuing it). I grew up in Red Wing in the 1970's, and back
then it was a rather dingy movie house (but certainly one with nice
character).

Although I won't dispute the fact that Red Wing might have a strip-mall
church, it also has a wonderful central corridor--adjacent to the
Sheldon--lined with churches on both sides, and a few right in the heart of
the corridor. Real churches, made with real brick, real stone, with real
church bells, and real pipe organs.

Without question, the sexiest Greg Brown song is "Enough."

You mean as far as topic or lyrics, Jon?

Among Dylan's Basement Tapes songs, I hear musical similarities with
the spoken-sung verses in his cover of Hank Williams' "Be Careful of
Stones that You Throw."

NO HAT! I've seen Greg a lot, but never with no hat. Once he didn't
wear sunglasses, but no hat? I've seen a baseball hat, a straw dress
hat, a stocking hat, one that looked like his mothers lamp shade, but
never no hat!

No argument there.
Covenant comes in a close second in my little black book.
I cast my vote for sexiest song alive: "No Place Away" from 92's Dream Cafe.

I know I'm compulsive, but, based on info from Virginia, a jog in memory
from the Grand Rapids set list, and clarification from my husband, who is a
devoted Dylan fan, here's a revised set list. Hubby tells me that Greg only
sang Dylan's Watchtower, not Jokerman, and that it starts out with lyrics
about the joker so I got confused. He'd know! He also added his 2-cents
worth by saying he thought Greg's rendition of Dylan's song was FABULOUS,
and that's saying a lot from a die-hard Dylan fan.

1. Mighty Sweet Watermelon

2. *I woke up this morning wishing it would rain.

3. My Home in the Sky

4. If I Had Known

5. *Tell Her I'll be over in the Morning

6. Never So Far

7. Samson

8. Skinny Days

9. One Wrong Turn

10. Like A Dog

11. River Will Take You

12. Angel From Ontgomery

13. *Hard Way to Go

14. All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)

15. Nearer My God to Thee

16. Brand New '64 Dodge

17. New Religion (Son House?)

Encore:

18. Ain't No One like You (with Pieta)

I thought that was a pretty obscure and quirky kind of
medley... glad I didn't spend much time on what the
relationship there is...all along the watchtower is
still very cool by itself, and oh so appropriate for
the times we live in. Thanks for the update.

Records, Roads and Pawnshops
A chat with Greg Brown

Christine Dean
September 25, 2002
Ripsaw News, Duluth

The many miles Greg Brown has traveled show in his music and in his
road-worn, comfortable baritone. Raised primarily in southern Iowa, he grew
up surrounded by poetry, music and family. All of these have remained at
the center of his life even as he's become one of this country's most
respected folk artists.

Although as a young man he tried out big-city life, Brown found that he
preferred the slower pace of his home state. He's lived in Iowa City for
many years, but plans to spend less time there and more time in a house
he's built on some family land in an area about 15 miles from the Missouri
border.

Now in his 50s, Brown has been releasing albums on St. Paul-based Red House
Records since 1980. In 2000 he also put out an album on an Iowa City-based
independent label, Trailer. His most recent Red House release, Milk of the
Moon, came out in March.

Ripsaw: You've cut your amount of touring in half recently. Part of what
you wanted to do more of was get some writing done, some other kinds of
writing, right?

Greg Brown: Oh, I just said that cause people are always asking you what
you're going to do. I'm really just going to poke around and fish and sit
out on my deck and watch the sun go down. But you know, that sounds lazy so
I told people I want to do some writing.

RS: You made Milk of the Moon pretty quickly. Do you make all your albums
that quickly?

GB: That one actually felt very leisurely. I think we recorded for about
five, six days and then the mix was pretty easy, Pete did that. I recorded
it at the home studio of my friends Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman in
upstate New York. They live in an old converted church, had a beautiful
sound in there and then Pete mixed it up right there. But you know, my
stuff is simple and I don't have like a choir or a string section or
anything that might be more time consuming, so it can happen fairly quick.
It's always fun to play with Karen and Pete. Ever since I met them it was
like I've known them all my life. We just started playing like we'd been
playing since we were little kids.

RS: Some of the songs that you did were written at the last minute and I'm
wondering which those are.

GB: There was a song called The Moon is Nearly Full which I wrote right out
on their porch and there's another one called Telling Stories,I wrote that
sitting out in the yard one day. There might be another one or two that was
written right there.

RS: Is there any difference between the songs that are spontaneous and the
ones that you carry around for a while?

GB: There's easy ones and there's hard ones, just like everything else in
life. Like the song on there called Milk of the Moon, that one probably
went through I don't know how many different versions, 20 or 30, and many,
many, many verses written and discarded and different tunes. And I think if
you work on those ones that are hard, if you stick with them, then it seems
like you get these little presents that just take like a half-hour to
write. It seems to be the way life is. If you really plug away at something
then you'll get a little grace period or something, you'll have things open
up in some way.

RS: Your work has a strong sense of community and you really foster that
with the benefits that you do and the exposure you give other artists. That
must be one of the greatest parts of having a little bit of success, being
able to share it.

GB: Yeah, it is, to be able to put in a word for that stuff. I just think
its the most basic thing in life is what goes under that word of a sense of
community. As I've traveled around America it seems to me that it gets
squashed down so much and people don't feel like they can do things
together, and they do have a voice and they can make a difference, and I
still think all that stuff is true, particularly at the local level. So if
I can do stuff like that and have some good effect, that's a good thing.

RS: You've done a little bit of recording in Duluth recently, is that right?

GB: Yeah, I came up there and tried recording with Charlie Parr. I think
he's just wonderful and he really reminds me of a young Dave Van Ronk, he's
got that kind of solid deal to him. I had been wanting to record some
traditional tunes and we had jammed out a few times, and in the studio
things didn't really quite work out. You know, you go into the studio and
sometimes it's a little different than playing a live show and we didn't
quite catch it that particular time. But we're gonna do some more recording
over time and I'm sure Ill be doing a lot more stuff with him as time goes
by. He's really good.

RS: Are you planning to do anything else on Trailer Records in the near future?

GB: Actually, my next record is going to come out on Trailer. Some time
this fall, Im not just sure when, it may be late fall, I'm going to record
a record that'll be probably about half traditional folks songs and blues
and then about half songs that I wrote that are inspired by that kind of
music and that'll come out on Trailer sometime in the spring.

RS: Do you feel that you could put different kinds of material on there
that maybe wouldn't fit as well on Red House?

GB: You know, I haven't really thought of it in those terms. I did that
kind of series of records for Red House with Bo [Ramsey, Brown's long-time
friend and collaborator] that were ... I think there are some subtle
pressures when you record for somebody like Red House because they want it
to be on the radio, which is really just public radio and community radio
and a few triple-A stations, I mean, its not like it's on big commercial
stations, but there is this feeling that they want a certain sound and that
sound should be kind of a really well-produced, fairly, you know, folk, but
kind of slick folk sound. That's just sort of understood there. I hadn't
really thought of that consciously, but when I did the Trailer record it
was just me and my buddies sitting around in a little garage with a little
DAT recorder on and to me, I thought that record had more emotion and more
life to it than a lot of Red House records I've done so that kind of caught
my attention. Whether I record for Red House or Trailer, my aim is to keep
that life to it and keep that emotion to it and not be thinking too much
about "Well, hows this going to sound through some big fat speakers? I
think my ears have gotten tired of that whole sort of pretty full,
big-bottom sound. Id rather hear something kind of harsh and tinny these
days." (laughs)

RS: You're touring with Garnet Rogers. How far do you guys go back?

GB: Oh god, Garnet and I go way back. He's such a beautiful soul. His songs
just lay me out. Some of his love songs are so beautiful it's just more
than I can take almost. And he's such a big old thing, too, you know, I can
walk up and put my head on his shoulder. Not too many folksingers that are
big enough for me to do that with. We always have a good time. It's fun to
tour with Garnet because he knows every pawnshop between here and China. He
collects instruments and also he knows all this stuff about anything old,
his wife runs a horse farm so he knows all about horse paraphernalia, knows
all about furniture, knows all about all the old instruments. And I love to
poke around pawnshops, although I don't even know what I'm looking at half
the time. Touring with Garnet is fun and we enjoy jamming out together at
the end of the night.

RS I was going to ask if you do some stuff together onstage because those
two deep voices together must be just amazing.

GB We can rattle a few walls. (laughs)

I'm wondering about the set list where song # 1 is listed as Mighty
Sweet Watermelon and # 5 is listed as Tell Her I'll Be Over in the morning.
It sounds like these two are the same song. I don't know if the lyrics
to this song have been posted here yet, but this is transcribed from the
way it was sung at the Creekfest in Pennsylvania last spring.

Mighty Sweet Watermelon

Mighty sweet watermelon spittin’ out the seeds

Mighty sweet watermelon spittin’ out the seeds

Go see if Grandma got everything she needs

And tell her I’ll be over in the morning

Tell her I’ll be over real soon

Mighty big pumpkin we’ll save up all the seeds

Mighty big pumpkin we’ll save up all the seeds

Go see if Grandpa got everything he needs

And tell him I’ll be over in the morning

Tell him I’ll be over real soon

Mighty chilly evening come crawl in bed

Mighty chilly evening, Honey, come crawl in bed

We could keep working but we should snuggle instead

There’s plenty of time again in the morning

Plenty of time to do stuff in the morning

Sunflowers dancing like my daughters do

Sunflowers dancing like my daughters do

Life gets old and love makes it new

Come down and meet us in the garden

Come down and meet us real soon

Mighty sweet watermelon spittin’ out the seeds

Mighty sweet watermelon spittin’ out the seeds

Go see if Grandma’s got everything she needs

And tell her I’ll be over in the morning

Tell her I’ll be over real soon

Greetings,

John Prine is playing the Orpheum in Minneapolis on May 19, with Pieta
Brown. Outside her direct family, I'd say this is a pretty big name to be
opening for. She's moving up.
http://www.hennepintheatredistrict.org/eventdescription.asp?theshow=Prine06

Or, if you look on Pieta's web site, Pieta Brown is playing in Minneapolis,
with John Prine. I'd say this old geezer is doing pretty well hitching his
train to a rising star like Pieta.

LOL! Good one, Mark.

But just remember that that "old geezer" just put out what may
have been the best record of last year, bar none. Great to see
Pieta getting the kind of exposure that opening for Mr. Prine
will bring to her and her music.
