I have not had any requests for this vine, however, I must close it for now.
I will be traveling for three weeks and do not want to make anyone wait to
receive their copies.

I will reopen the vine upon my return home.

This is a regular administrative message regarding the GBrown-L
discussion group at Yahoo. It is also sent to new members when they
subscribe. Please review it so you understand of the guidelines for the
operation of the group. This message also contains information on
unsubscribing and changing delivery options and has links to other
information.

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address. See "YAHOO GROUP '-OWNER' ADDRESS" below
for more information.

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

UNSUBSCRIBING AND CHANGING SUBSCRIPTION OPTIONS

YAHOO GROUP "-OWNER" ADDRESS

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address, even though Yahoo may still offer this
address in the "To" or "Reply-To" fields of messages. This means:

(1) If you reply to a message via the Yahoo Groups web site, be
sure not to select that "To" address.

(2) If you receive an administrative e-mail message from an

Wow - Another great night with Greg, Pieta, and Bo. My husband and I
took my parents to their second Greg Brown concert, and it was an
incredible treat. We had a wonderful opening with Pieta and Bo.
Peita was very talkative - she hadn't seen Bo or her Dad in a while,
and they had surprised her with a new guitar. Greg played many
favorites, and was very "on" until he broke a string. For those of
you interested in fashion - he was very dressed up in gray slacks a
pink dress shirt, and a sport coat. He had on a wide brimmed fishing
hat and sunglasses of course. Some of the treats included Skinny
Days, Like a Dog, and my first time hearing Canned Goods live. He
played several songs I was not familiar with, but it was a great mix
of old favorites and songs that were new to me.

All in all a great way to spend a spring evening here in Iowa. It
seems that this time of year I long to hear more and more Greg.
Anyone else notice this? Maybe it is the planting, growing, and
fishing we get more and more absorbed in this time of year...

Julia,

Oddly enough,... I like listening to Greg in the fall, and winter.
The summers, where I live, are full speed ahead, no holds barred! Go,
go, go! People get drunk on boats, and play annoying loud music.
Then, when the seasons start to change,... and the tourists go
home,... I start spending more time in the house, getting ready for
winter... and snow. Lots of snow! Fall is the time to slow down, and
listen to Greg! Songs like "Two Little Feet," "Canned Goods," and
"Rexroth's Daughter" get me though the winter! (There are so many
other GB songs that help!) The first three songs of Covenant are a
blessing! (We get dumped on pretty good, where I live. "Coldest
night of the winter,..." <grin>)

And then there are the songs that get me jumping around the house with
a "ski pole guitar," but that's a guilty pleasure! ;O)

It's been a long time since I've written one of these, but having had the
opportunity to go hear Greg close to home, I guess it's my duty to those further
  away!

Although it wasn't announced in any publicity I saw, the show opened with a
long set by Pieta Brown and Bo Ramsey. I am not too familiar with Pieta's
work, and will no doubt get the titles of the songs wrong, but those who know
are
  encouraged to update my list.

1. Rolling Down the Track
2. West Monroe
3. Hey Run
4. ? "A song about songs," Pieta said.
5. "When the sun goes down, love me still"
6. "We used to be friends, but we don't talk anymore."
7. A stranger in this land
8. "I rolled and I tumbled" - Muddy Waters
9. In my mind I was talkin' to Loretta (this was in response to seeing Coal
Miner's Daughter.)
10. Remember the Sun (title track from one of her albums.)

After a break, Bo came back out with Greg, who sat on a chair while Bo stood
off to the side. I'm gonna be lazy and not get up to verify exact titles,
but if you know Greg's songs at all, you'll probably recognize my version. For
the fashionistas, Greg was wearing some kind of tan suit and a gray fishing
hat - midway through the set he took off the jacket to reveal a black
sleeveless t-shirt. Cowboy boots that looked like they might be some exotic
leather,
but on the other hand, they might just have been beat up.

Until the glass was empty, Greg sipped from a glass of red wine between
songs. After the final series of bows at the end of the show, Greg threw the hat
into the audience. (A fellow GB-List member, who was kind enough to review my
draft of this report, opined that it would have been better if he'd thrown
his black t-shirt. You are allowed one guess as to the gender of the kind
teacher who corrected spelling and song titles, plus provided the lyrics
below.)

1. Here in the Going Going Gone.
2. Pound It on Down
3. Evening Call
4. Treat Each Other Right (This was a really long rocked out version.)
5. Preachin' the Blues" (I want to be a Baptist Preacher so I don't have to
work ---" a Son House tune)
6. Pray (by Merle Haggard from his Bluegrass album

Greg talked about how since this was Sunday night, he'd keep with the
religious theme. He then commenced to give a long intro to the next song, about
back-sliding in the fundamentalist church his Dad had preached to down in
Parsons, Kansas. He compared the cycle of repenting and being saved, followed
by a
slow backsliding decent into sin and debauchery, to a slow form of
Catholicism -- "you just confessed once or twice a year instead of every week."

7. Poor Backslider
8. Fooled me once
9. China
10 Whippoorwill ( Greg made clear this was not the Hank Williams song, "I'm
so lonesome I could cry," but about his own experience with the bird. He said
he was pretty sure that Williams had never heard a whippoorwill, or
certainly not up close for a long long time, or he wouldn't have made the bird
sound
so romantic; Greg said that close to the house at 3 in the morning singing
over and over and over again, they just sound insane!) For those of you don't
remember, Hanks's version goes like this:

Hear the lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I’m so lonesome I could cry

I’ve never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means he’s lost the will to live
I’m so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I’m so lonesome I could cry

Greg's song is a bit less complimentary to this bird.

11. Blues Go Walkin'
12. InaBelle Sale (with an intro comparing the "Jesus Radio" stations you
hear at the left end of the dial to the NPR stations that are down in the same
spectrum. "If you go over a hill, or get behind a big building, NPR just
fades out, but not Jesus Radio!")
13. Blue Car
-----
14 (encore with Pieta) "He Reached Down" by Iris DeMent. Greg explained that
this had been written by Iris after listening to the preacher at the church
they both attend in Kansas City; the theme had been on the Good Samaritan. I
think the preacher, Rev. Sam Mann, may have been in the audience.

I didn't see any evidence the show was being taped, but with any luck, maybe
someone did.......

Hello,

I haven't posted to this group in a long time. As a former Iowa
Citian I was able to catch Greg a couple of times a year. Now not so
much. I am wondering does anyone have a recording of him doing Lynn
Street?

Thanks so much for your help,
   Mitch

A cool evening closed out a 95 degree day in the Willamette Valley.

Jim Brunberg opened. Check him out on MySpace.
http://www.myspace.com/jimbrunberg

It went pretty much in this order. I'm not exactly sure where Treat Each Other
Right fell in the lineup, but it's close.

Everything with You is Sex
Fat Boy Blues
Verona Road
Pray Merle Haggard
Ever Since the World Ended Mose Allison
Mose Allison Played Here
Louisiana Randy Newman
Oily Boys
Little You
One Wrong Turn
Lullaby
Why Do You Even Say That
Treat Each Other Right
Folsom Prison Johnny Cash
Out in the Country

Encore
China
I Shall Not Be Moved

Solo. Seated. Frequent tuning on an "old guitar that doesn't get out on the road
much".
Orange ball cap, shades, aqua and fuschia palm tree batik print on black
background button up shirt, short sleeves rolled up, jeans, hiker/sneaker sort
of footwear.
And, yes, at times, he did sound "like a beaver with its tail in a trap,
underwater".

If you do not wish to belong to GBrown-L, you may unsubscribe by sending

YAHOO GROUP "-OWNER" ADDRESS

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address, even though Yahoo may still offer this
address in the "To" or "Reply-To" fields of messages. This means:

(1) If you reply to a message via the Yahoo Groups web site, be
sure not to select that "To" address.

(2) If you receive an administrative e-mail message from an
owner/moderator via Yahoo, you cannot reply to that message directly
because it will not be received. Instead, send your message to the
address listed at http://muras.net.

Humorous song. I got the lyrics from a GB live recording several
years ago, I seem to remember Don't think he does it often.

Tony

Fat Boy Blues

My baby said so sweetly
You're still my all and all
But either part of you got bigger
Or part of you got small
I looked down in consternation
I couldn't even see my shoes
Houston we got a problem
And me I got these fat boy blues

Well my friends they treat me kindly
My friends they treat me great
They are so quick to remind me
That I've put on a little weight
Yeah, they add so quickly,
Sure looks good on you
Then they try to slip on past me
And leave me with these fat boy blues

I don't know how it happened
I ain't no Elvis P
But one day I just woke up
Just as fat as I could be
I stagger out to the kitchen
For a chicken or two
Well yes I did it my way
And I've got these fat boy blues

Well I guess that I could lose it
If I really wanted to
I want to get as round as ??????
Shope at Wallmart too
Triple X has a brand new meaning
My whole wardrobe is brand new
You can sail a sailboat with my shirt son
I've got the fat boy blues

Well my pants keep gettin tighter
But it ain't cause I'm aroused
I can't pull out my lighter
Or get my loose change out now
I guess I'll get used to it
In a year or two
Well yes I am the walrus
And I've got the fat boy blues

I want a tush like Belushi
When he was livin large
I wanna make like Cleopatra
Float the river in a barge
Down to New Orleans
Where they know a thing or two
Bout rice and beans and garlic
And the fat boy blues

OMG!?!

This song is hilarious! I've never heard it or seen it before.
Surely this must have been a request by someone. Just another
reminder to many of us of our Skinny Days. ;~)

Thanks, Tony!
