I'm finally retiring the stragglers of my VHS collection and have copies of two
Greg Brown videos that could use an appreciative home: "In Harmony & Concerts
for a Cause Presents Greg Brown" (looks like from 2000), and the In Harmony
Solid Heart 3 video (April 2001). Let me know your address and I'll send the
pair to you. Fine print: no charge or need for reimbursement; package deal
only, left-coasters preferred.

Thanks! Suzanne

Now HERE is the way to spend a Spring fling. If you're not familiar

with the namesake of this festival, do yourself a favor and spend

5 minutes to read his bio.

I was working late and did a quick search for some new music to listen to and
found Greg's June 24 appearance on Mountain Stage. I may have missed this if it
was posted before, but it is certainly worth a listen.

I do remember the references to the Butte Creek Family Band. I first moved to
Chico in 1982. I think that was around the time that they morphed into Spark and
Cinder which is still in existence today--mostly as a result of Jimmy Faye being
the mainstay. I also remember Cabos well and saw lots of great shows there. I
left Chico in 1988 and came back in 2000. It still feels like the same place it
did way back when. It's bigger of course, 100, 000 now, but a very small town
feel. The Sierra Nevada Brewery opened up an intimate music room a few years
back with 350 seats and gets some of the best acts there. Bob Weir and the
Waybacks, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, David Grisman, Peter Rowan and Tony
Rice. Greg Brown was there last year. Lots of folks.

Does anyone know where I can find an updated list of Greg's current concert
schedule? I checked out Pollster.com, but it doesn't have a show listed until
the middle of December. Obviously, he's been playing shows not listed on this
website because all of you are reviewing the. Please let me know how to find
out about these shows before they happen. Thanks!

That's it! I was at that show.
Greg talking:
"I don't think we did any church songs yet . . .Religion is a great example
of story telling . . . it's sort of a tenuous thing . . . religion was fine
until people started thinkin . . . thinkin thinkin thinkin . . .well, you
end up like a Unitarian. Wow. Ever read one of those Unitarian hymns? Wow,
they sound different. "I sort of think there may be a god, it could be a guy
or a gal, it could be a Buddha, Mohammed or Christ, I really think they are
all swell . . it's unbelievable"
Nancy, were you there? are you in the NW?

The Napa Opera House, where Greg played Saturday night is a small, intimate
venue where I suspect every seat has as good a view as mine did. The sound where
I sat was excellent, and Greg played well, sounded great and gave a fine
performance, which included:

Pound It On Down
You Drive Me Crazy, kinda funky
Fat Boy Blues
Train Carrying Jimmie Rogers Home
The Evening Call
Hey Baby Hey
Like A Dog
Canned Goods
Treat Each Other Right
Not Dark Yet (Dylan)
Ever Since the World Ended (Allison)
Ina Bell Sale
Cheapest Kind
Never So Far
E:
Jesus & Elvis, in which, at one point, Elvis picked up a Gibson and made all
the...
Kokomo

He didn't work out as much on the guitar this night as I had hoped for, not as
much as he did Wednesday night in Ft. Bragg. And he did many of his songs quite
differently from their usual, whatever that is for Greg, as he is wont to do!
Pound It On Down kind of set the tone for the evening, as he did several tunes
in that vein; slow, somewhat droning. Jesus and Elvis may have been the highest
energy tune he played Saturday night. He did some funny songs, though, and said
some funny stuff, and there was a guy a couple of rows behind me who had a great
belly laugh and who was really enjoying the show, which added to my own
enjoyment. Greg wore that same plaid hat he was wearing Wednesday night,
sunglasses, brown pants, boots this night, and a brown shirt with a stripe
design on it, white tank underneath. He played seated quite a ways back from the
front of the stage (I'm more accustomed to seeing him closer, and seemingly more
connected, to the audience) so it seemed a little odd in that regard. Also
somewhat unusual in my experience was Greg's appearance after the show at the cd
table in the lobby to sign cds! Many people lined up to say hello to the Man,
myself included along with Pete and Joel from the list. Greg seemed in a good
mood and it was a good night, good show.

Thanks for these reviews, Lisa! They make me even sorrier I had to miss him in
Portland last month. I love your in depth reviews, complete with the fashion
report. Thanks for posting. Great song list, he is pulling them out from so
far back. he didn't mention when his next unit will be out, did he? Surely he
has enough songs for one. I have never heard his song Everything With You Is
Sex. Has that one been on a commercial recording yet? Are the lyrics posted
anywhere?

I remember getting to see Greg and Bo do a sound check one night and the
stage had a "dead" spot. Bo moved them back a couple feet and all was
good. It is a special treat for Greg to show up in the lobby at the CD
table. He did it a few times when I was selling Solid Hearts.
I am enjoying all the reviews and posts lately. Thanks to all who have
shared.

Really? Signing CD's at the merch table? Wow. I've never seen him do

anything even close to that. Interesting.

Mmmmmhhh.. I love when he ends the regular set with a gem like

"Never So Far". Of course he's just setting you up for a butt-kicking

on the encores!

Thanks, Lisa.

There is a version as part of an introduction to Sampson at a show in
Port Townsend in 8-04. I know he does it elsewhere, too. He starts off
"Church songs... Religion is a great example of story telling. It was
great till people started thinking too much. You start thinking too much
about something like religion you end up like the Unitarians - you might
as well just join a country club and get in a few rounds. You ever heard
those Unitarian hymns? Wow! " Then he sings:

I sort of think there may be a god
It could be a guy or a gal.
It could be a Buddha, Mohammed or Christ
I really think they are all swell.

He goes on to talk about stories helping religion last and sings Sampson
and Delilah.

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a

Well, I usually don't pay much attention to fashion reports, but this one

was interesting to say the least!?! Surely he was trying to match up with

Greg came to Chico last night and was joined by John Hammond and David
Lindley on a billing named "American Troubadours." John did the first set,
then David followed with his set and usual fabulous attire. Greg walked on
looking like an Elvis Presley impersonator: lime green dress shirt with wide
collars, button down to the middle of his chest, olive green silk, patterned
scarf, large rose colored eye shades and hair tussled up high like it was
either bed-head or moused up.

His performance was simply great. Lots of changes to the arrangements for
the older tunes. His voicing throughout Cheapest Kind was so unusually deep
and slow that it was a curiosity. The shared bill made his set all too
short. Still, it was a great treat. Here's what he played:

Cheapest Kind
Like a Dog ("Here's a love song")
Rexroth's Daughter (Never mentioned Rexroth, changed the words to "poet's
daughter" throughout)
You Drive Me Crazy
Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home
Fat Boy Blues
Treat Each Other Right
He Reached Down (Iris Dement)

Thanks for the review Steve.

Wow!!Hammond, Lindley and Brown on
one bill!!! What was the venue?? I used to live in Chico (1979 to
1983). Lovely place. Ever hear of the Butte Creek Family Band? I lived
out on the land for a time. Lots of wonderful intimate venues. Saw Rick
Danko and Levon Helm at Cabo's IIRC correctly.

Greg came to Chico last night and was joined by John Hammond and David Lindley
on a billing named "American Troubadours." John did the first set, then David
followed with his set and usual fabulous attire. Greg walked on looking like an
Elvis Presley impersonator: lime green dress shirt with wide collars, button
down to the middle of his chest, olive green silk, patterned scarf, large rose
colored eye shades and hair tussled up high like it was either bed-head or
moused up.

His performance was simply great. Lots of changes to the arrangements for the
older tunes. His voicing throughout Cheapest Kind was so unusually deep and slow
that it was a curiosity. The shared bill made his set all too short. Still, it
was a great treat. Here's what he played:

Cheapest Kind
Like a Dog ("Here's a love song")
Rexroth's Daughter (Never mentioned Rexroth, changed the words to "poet's
daughter" throughout)
You Drive Me Crazy
Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home
Fat Boy Blues
Treat Each Other Right
He Reached Down (Iris Dement)

Wonderful review, Lisa. Thanks so much for sharin'.

One of my favorite bluesmen, was the great Hound Dog Taylor. He played

a Fender guitar through a tiny amp. It came out all distorted and very cool.

But Greg's setup is even more funky. I mean. A pickup duct-taped to the

guitar!? That's frickin' hilarious! I think the man could play a broomstick.

One of the new songs you mention, is the "All of Those Things" that you've

heard me go on about on several occasions here on the list and off. That

song is soooo cool, and I don't think Greg realized it until some of us were

asking him to play it. So it's great that he seems to be playing it often
these days.

Really great set list. Wish I coulda been there. Wish I could hear a
soundboard

recording. Wish, wish, wish...

OMG! What a show! Greg appeared solo and played for two hours on his old
Sear & Roebuck Kay guitar from the 40's with a pick-up duct-taped to the
front of the guitar, and it sounded fantastic. He played through a small amp
which was, of course, miked and had a little reverb on it, but just a
little. I talked to Greg after the show and he said that he had a hard time
settling in, getting his groove going, until about three-quarters of the way
through the show, but I'd bet $50 that he's the only one who could tell. I
was sitting close and watching even closer and I could see that he missed a
note here and there but he was playing so many that the missed ones weren't
even noticeable. Truly, Greg's guitar work last night was sublime. If it's
any indication of things to come, Saturday night in Napa should be ecstasy!

He started off with Ever Since the World Ended by Mose Allison and then told
a story about when, early in his career, Greg was playing at a place called
the Top Hat, which he described as a toilet, in Missoula, MT, and saw a
poster of Mose and thought "Well, if Mose Allison played here, there's hope
for me yet." He also talked about wanting to write a tribute song for Mose
and how it couldn't be some sweet silly thing, considering who Mose is and
what Mose writes, and then Greg talked about the time he played the Dingo
Bar in Albequerque and how he came to write that tribute song, Mose Allison
Played Here, which was the next song he played.

Next up was something I hadn't heard before, and Greg didn't say the name of
the tune, possibly Home on the Range (?) It ended with "we work and play and
at the end of our day rest in the arms of our sweet Mother Earth." Very nice
song, followed by:
You Drive Me Crazy
Blues Go Walking
Fat Boy Blues
I've heard Fat Boy Blues several times now and it still gets me rolling in
the aisle. It was apparent last night that many had the same reaction. Very
funny song.

Then Greg did a talking blues number that referred several times to "my
ex-wife" and which he called a little back-yard story. He seemed to be
reading much of it off of the papers he had on a music stand there on the
stage. (He had a great many pages on that music stand and did several songs
from them.) He told me later that he wrote that story a couple of months
ago. I thought maybe he had just written it that day...

Next was: Everything With You Is Sex
followed by another song I'd not heard before, which seemed to be: I'm All
of Those Things With My Baby
This song listed several sets of opposites - happy and sad, good and bad,
old and young, smart and dumb - and I'm all of those things with my baby.
Then he sang Smell of Coffee, after which he talked about how he used to
write meaningful songs.
Not this one: Corn Cob Blues. It was a song about working in the garden, a
silly song, a dirty song, he said (har, har, har).

After shuffling through the papers on the music stand, he said "Oh! I want
to play you this old song!" and did Ships, one of the cd bonus tracks from
One Night. That was sweet!

Then we heard:
If You Don't Get It at Home
One Wrong Turn
Lullaby (after which he asked "How's everyone doing? Anyone still awake?
See, now, if I was a good lullaby singer, you'd all be asleep!")
Kokomo

So, then he asked if you've ever known someone who couldn't make a decision?
About anything? About dinner? About a chair? About you? He said he wants to
read Dante but he can't find a good translation so thinks he may have to
learn to read Italian because he really wants to read Inferno to find out if
there's a special circle for people who can't make up their minds, and then
he sang Waiting On You. He ended the set with Jesus and Elvis.

Encore:
Sam Stone (John Prine)
Whippoorwill

Fashion report:
Blue long-sleeve v-neck sweater
brown slacks
brown leather loafers with red socks
plaid hat and sunglasses

Greg was in good voice, in a good mood and, as reported above, put on a
really good show last night. If you get a chance to see him on this tour,
don't miss it.

I've been in this group for a couple years and have enjoyed reading your
postings about my favorite singer/song-writer. You are all good writers and
fans!

This is my first time posting.

It's been several years since I've seen Greg perform, so I am excited about
this weekend.

I'm going to see Greg this Saturday night in Napa and I wonder if any of you
will be there as well?

Elise

Hey Jan,

I think you have a copy of Greg's Seattle show at Benaroya Hall. I
think that was in 2008. That's the most expansive, spoken word
description I know of how he was compelled to write Jesus and Elvis.
Unfortunately, we didn't capture the actual song that night. Virtually
everytime he plays his Mose song, he speaks of his great respect for
him. Perhaps someone else can suggest a particular show for that. I
can't remember which show he told my local crowd he met Mose at Jazz
Alley in Seattle. After Mose's set, Greg nervously introduced himself
and told him how much he appreciated his music. Kind of sounds like me
when I got brave and introduced myself to Greg years ago. You may want
to look in your collection for a Greg version of "Ever Since The World
Ended". That's a Mose tune that I believe Greg first played in
Vancouver, BC in 1999 or so. Maybe you should play your entire
collection again and enjoy the research!

I don't know if a recording of any recent (last 3-4 years) Albuquerque,
NM shows exist but "Mose Alison Played Here" is an autobiographical song
about Greg playing the infamous Dingo Bar in Albuquerque and he usually
plays the song here, and tells an extra descriptive story about the
Dingo. Two years ago at the Kimo Theatre in Albuquerque the story
seemed longer than the song. I don't know if he has played the song
much in his years of runs at Pinos Altos, NM but that would be another
good place to try to track down good stories. I know both nights of the
2008 run were recorded but I have never seen the shows surface.

I haven't written in for quite a while but wanted to say how much I
appreciate all the recent reviews from people who have attended Greg's
concerts in the past couple of months. Always fun to hear the stories
and I especially enjoyed the posts from the attendees of the Portland

I gave a Greg CD to a new friend who had not heard him before and I
believe we have a new fan now, she loved it. She especially liked Jesus
and Elvis, she thought the lyrics were so clever. Now I want to make her
another CD with selections from concert shows I have containing Greg's

was a professional musician himself, asked if I had ever heard of Mose
Allison so I need to put in Mose Allison Played Here and related
stories.

Does anyone have suggestions for particular shows to find these
stories/songs? I have a lot of the shows but haven't kept good records
of the song lists. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a lovely Iowa weekend, went to the Prairie Home Companion live from Des
Moines.  Pieta was supposed to be a guest, but had canceled that morning due to
voice problems.  GK ended the show with the Iowa Waltz, nice touch.  Only a few
singing along though.

Then on to Davenport to see Todd Snider/Robert Earl Keen/Bruce Robison-great
show!  Three solo acoustic performances, then all three taking turns with
songs-great songwriting.  REK has Laughing River on his most recent CD and
before he sang it on Sunday, he told how Greg called him up while he was
recording and asked if he could sing with him, since he was in town (Austin?
can't remember).  REK said, well yeah, it's your song.  My partner swears he
heard someone near us saying, "Who's Greg Brown?"
