Wow, just found out I’ll be able to see Pieta Brown and Bo Ramsey
this Saturday night.. They’re performing at the Cafe Paradiso in
Fairfield, Iowa. It just so happens I’m going there with a couple of
guys from the movie I made. We screen the movie at 3PM leaving
plenty of time for the concert that night. Oh what lucky man I am.
Should be a blast. Heck maybe Greg will show up.

Not only does Iowa have the best musicians on the planet, our fellow
lister, Joe, made a great documentary about how the Field Of Dreams
ballpark continued to inspire people long after the Hollywood film crews
departed. Ghost Player must be playing at the Fairfield Film Festival.
Check it out there or online. This is just another unexpected,
pleasurable connection that Greg has brought into my life. Thanks, Greg.
Now I'm humming Here in the Going Going Gone again.

This is part of my newsletter & PR release:

Singer/songwriter Pieta Brown and Bo Ramsey will be playing in Fairfield this
weekend at the Cafe Paradiso, the same weekend the Ghost Players from the Field
of Dreams movie is screening.

Pieta Brown is the daughter of Greg Brown. DreamCatcher Production of Dyersville
IA produced Ghost Player: Relive the Magic. DreamCatcher also produced The
Artists Recovery Fund Benefit Concert DVD starring Pieta's father Greg Brown and
featured Radoslav Lorkovic. The DVD was nominated for an award at the Iowa
Cultural Corridor Alliance Innovation and Excellence Awards – the Ickys.
Although the DVD did not get chosen as one of the finalist for the award's
ceremony the DVD has garnered praise for the quality audio mastered by Tucker
Burnes (of Tucker Burnes Recording).

"We are looking forward to all the events at the Film Expo. So many excellent
programs but we'll take time to see Pieta and Bo at the Café Paradiso", Ghost
Player producer Joe Scherrman reported. "Pieta's father Greg was one of a
select few A-list singer/songwriters who contributed tracks for the recent
Golden Globe award winning film "Crazy Heart" starring Jeff Bridges. It was a
pleasure recording Greg during the benefit concert in Iowa City. What a
wonderful opportunity to hear Pieta live. Heck she's toured with John Prine and
is recording a new full-length studio album. She is cool."

Direct Current report:

Folk/Americana - Acclaimed producer Don Was literally pulled off to the side of
an L.A. freeway when he heard the voice of Pieta Brown live in the studio from
trendsetting radio station KCRW. A few phone calls, emails and months later,
Brown and guitarist Bo Ramsey met up with were at his home to play him some new
songs. Wanting to capture her remarkable voice "unadorned", Was grabbed his bass
and joined Brown and Ramsey in the studio, mixing the impromptu sessions live as
they went down. The result is the wondrous Shimmer (November 10, Red House), a
seven-track mini-album that captures Brown's poetic lyricism, wonderfully sweet
and smoky voice and the intimate immediacy that comes from three skilled
musicians plying their crafts with palpable inspiration.

Residing stylistically somewhere between Lucinda Williams' alt-country twang and
the eclectic, boundary-blurring songwriting of Cat Power and Leslie Feist, Brown
draws deep upon her slow-cooked rural roots but unlike most, moves ahead into
her own quietly daring territory. Beneath her soft, folksy drawl lies an
intensity -- what Was calls "major star power magnetism" and the BBC has termed
"seductive simplicity." Songs such as "You're My Lover Now" drift and sway with
easy, graceful moves as Brown's deceptively wispy voice is suspended in air,
seemingly close enough to feel her breath in your ear. Highly recommended.

So, that was a beautiful review of "Shimmer" by Pieta Brown that someone
posted today. Makes me want to buy the disc, though I haven't bought a
Pieta disc since the first two, because I can understand not one single
word of the lyrics. I am not trying to criticize her, just make a
comment. Is she enunciating any differently on the newer recordings?
Thanks, Tim

This is a regular administrative message regarding the GBrown-L
discussion group at Yahoo. It is also sent to new members when they
subscribe. Please review it so you understand of the guidelines for the
operation of the group. This message also contains information on
unsubscribing and changing delivery options and has links to other
information.

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

My friend and fellow lister, Melanie, had her car broken into recently.
Among the treasures that were stolen was this live recording. I offered
to help replenish and augment her losses, but I don't have this
particular show. Is there one kind spirit out there with this recording
that would burn a copy for her? I'll do what I can to make it worth
your while. Thanks in advance for any help you can give to a friend of

No, sorry. I had high hopes that I did have it but what I have is Greg and Bill
Morrissey April '93 in Grouse Mt. Lodge, Whitefish Montana. In fact, I have an
extra copy of this double disc show, I'd be happy to send it to Melanie.

Many thanks to Jan, Nancy and Larry for their offers to help. I should

Nancy is the winner(?) of this backwards vine. I am grateful to all of

I'm glad he touched with you with three great songs. For me, sometimes even a
dull concert is very memorable if there is one shining jewel in it. I haven't
heard him play Downtown in a long time, but maybe he does. Those were his
beatnik days.

He's doing the Grateful Dead now? Imagine going to a Greg concert and
hearing him sing every song he has ever written and covered. I wonder
how long that concert would take. Somehow, I'd find the time.

Great Valentine's Day show last night at the Highline. I'd seen Greg and Bo
at Sanders Theater in Cambridge about six weeks ago. I was in the balcony
for that one and I must say that, beautiful as the room was, it felt a
little too big. Not so with the Highline.

For starters, Bo's opening set was amazing! He played acoustic the whole
time and the room was totally enraptured. His tone and touch were so
delicate and sparse. There were these great little moments of total silence
at the end of his songs before the audience began to clap.

Greg came out after a short break and joked a bit about Valentine's Day and
how he wished he could write love songs like Stevie Wonder, but hey you
gotta work with what you got, etc. He then proceeded to play a whole set of
love songs (when doesn't he, really...). "Further in" was a request -- and
I'd like to thank whoever it was who requested it, because it was probably
the highlight for me. "Happy by myself" was great too -- he got in a nice
groove that just rolled and rolled along.

Great show all around! Maybe others who were there can correct my humble
attempt to keep a setlist. If anyone happened to record it, I'd love to
hear it and will gladly propagate a vine.
-Ramsay

Nice review, Ramsay. I've never heard of Bo doing an
all-acoustic set!? That's cool.

Great to see Greg playing "Hanging Man" for the encore.
Yummmmmmmmmmy.

---------------------------------------------
Great Valentine's Day show last night at the Highline.

According this, "Bucket" by Greg Brown is #3 on Jeff's iTunes personal
playlist. Bo Ramsey's "Unseeing Eye" comes in at #9.

Hi,
I am in Perth Western Australia and came across Greg's music by accident a few
years ago. I have managed to find three of his albums here (Slant 6 mind,
Further in, & Covenant) and enjoy listening to them still. I arrived at my
wedding to "Billy from the Hills". I would really like to see/hear him live and
this brings me to my fist question.
Does he ever tour outside of the USA? My second question relates to additional
album purchase of which I will do online. Having not had the opportunity to hear
other albums can you make some recommendations as to which others are considered
essential for a Greg Brown collection?
Thanks
John

John,
Glad to hear Greg's music finds his way down under! I'm not sure how much he
tours outside the US these days. Others on the list know better than I and I'm
sure will chime in.
It's hard to go wrong with any of his albums, and the three you have are great.
Other ones I'd definitely recommend are "In the Dark with You" and "One Night",
both essential early albums. One Night is a great live album from around '81 or
so. Another essential is The Poet Game. And I love his album Songs of Innocence
and Experience, where he puts to music Blake's poetry.
For my two cents those are the ones I'd seek out next, though it'll be hard to
go wrong with any of them.
cheers,
John in Chicago

Welcome, John !

Greg rarely plays outside of the country and as time goes by,
he’s even less likely to do so. But one never knows! He may
surprise us all again. His few ventures have been to Europe.

As for other albums, one’s collection could never be complete
without Poet Game. It’s a must. And go back and explore his
early records also. One More Goodnight Kiss is a good place
to start.

Any guy that would play Billy from the Hills as his wedding
arrival song, is someone I’d like to meet! Come on over mate
and let me buy you a beer. ;-)

To the other excellent album suggestions, I'd add "Dream Cafe" as essential.
But let's get real: John, like the rest of us, you're going to end up with all
of them!

Hey John,
I agree with Mike that acquiring Greg Brown albums may become something of a
compulsion.  I love One Night, the live album mentioned by John P. I believe,
and I'm also a big fan of The Live One.  Nothing epitomizes a song of Greg
Brown's for me like the version of "Canned Goods" on that one.
Best of Luck,
Jeff in RI (Like Ramcey, I've also got beer available to you up here if you make
it over.)

Another fun album...something that gives us parents some sanity is Bathtub
Blues.  It has a few really nice songs on it.  The ones with his daughter and
friends children singing are fun to listen to also.  My daughters love that
album...which means on long trips I don't have to listen to that crap they call
children music.  They know all the words to Bathtub blues...it's so fun to catch
them singing it while they are playing.  They like the "I turned into a duck"
part.

My favorites on that album are Green Leaf(just a haunting sound to it), Young
Robin(which being from Minnesota have seen what he is singing about), Late night
radio and You might as well go to sleep(which all parents have had to go thru
one night or another) .  A little for the kiddies and something for the adults
to enjoy.  A compromise if you will.  Plus the songs with the children singing
actually are kind of funny.  I sing Down by the sea hotel to my daughter when
she won't go to sleep.  She asks for it everyonce in awhile...and she wants me
to sing it.LOL  It must be a very well written song for my daughter to request
"me" to sing it.LOL

Also songs that have really hung onto me are "Say a little prayer" and
"Daughters" fun songs...someone send him the angel poop song!  I cannot find it
and he needs to hear it.LOL
