This is a regular administrative message regarding the GBrown-L
discussion group at Yahoo. It is also sent to new members when they
subscribe. Please review it so you understand of the guidelines for the
operation of the group. This message also contains information on
unsubscribing and changing delivery options and has links to other
information.

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address. See "YAHOO GROUP '-OWNER' ADDRESS" below
for more information.

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

YAHOO GROUP "-OWNER" ADDRESS

Due to the amount of spam, the moderators no longer read mail sent to
the GBrown-L-owner address, even though Yahoo may still offer this
address in the "To" or "Reply-To" fields of messages. This means:

(1) If you reply to a message via the Yahoo Groups web site, be

My husband and I caught Greg's show last night in Iowa City at the Englert Civic
Theatre. Pieta opened for him, (Accompanied by Bo Ramsey) and was really
amazing. She has a new cd being released this Tuesday and is about to start a
national tour with Bo. She's very enduring to watch live. She commented that
still when she opens for her dad she gets so nervous she can hardly talk.

Greg opened the show by reciting e.e. cummings' poem thank You God for this
amazing day. It was so appropriate for Easter and also due to it being a perfect
spring day in Iowa. So lovely it gave me chills. He then sang Wash My Eyes.

I didn't write down the set list. Sorry. Bo and a bass player, (Eek, sorry I
forgot his name. My apologies to you Mr.Bass player, you were wonderful)
accompanied him for the better part of his set. I love watching Bo play live.
For Greg's encore he brought all three of his daughters, (And grand daughter?)
onstage along with Iris and they sang back up on Iowa Waltz and This Little
Light Of Mine. It was a great show...of course. Being native born to Iowa I have
to say hearing him sing Iowa Waltz, live in Iowa nearly brought a tear to my
eye. Not everyone can appreciate the beauty of the state...it's nice to hear
it's beauty in song.

Looking forward to seeing Greg live again this summer at the Minnesota Zoo.

Richland's Woman Blues (Mississippi John Hurt)

Opening Set by Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman (6 songs)

I was the original taper of this show (it was just a few days after my birthday)
and that was not the greatest recording I've done. It was recorded on mini-disc
- I later got a DAT recorder and my recordings got better. As usual, however,
tape-master Ramcey has done a rather - er - masterful job of re-mastering this
show. It is very nice and I recommend it.

A note about Greg's rendition of Just By Myself for this show: I was chatting
with Greg in the lobby of the Lakewood Theater before the show when two somewhat
- okay, very - obnoxious guys interrupted our conversation and practically
demanded that Greg sing Just By Myself. Greg didn't seem particularly happy to
accommodate their request and they sensed that and pressed a $100 bill into his
hand - to bribe him into singing it, I guess. The guys talked about having been
in CO hunting and were obnoxious about that, too. Greg turned and put the $100
bill into the bar tip jar and then went backstage. And then he sang Just By
Myself for those guys. I'm sure the irony was completely lost on them...

Huge favor to ask of some kind soul: if anyone can do a B&P for this show, I'd
appreciate it
as I can't burn.

I was at this show with another Greg fan who I met at an Austin Cactus show on
this tour. Btw,
I was near the bar and saw those 2 guys talking to him and saw him leave a tip.
Little did I know
what had happened.

Greg was pretty sick with a cold or something but played and sang a
superfabulous set anyway.
He signed and took photos with us and others afterwards. I didn't know "Wash My
Eyes", so I
asked him by giving him a brief description and a few lyrics. "One Cool Remove"
I did already know,
and he sure did a goosebump-raising performance of it (would love to see if
anyone here agrees).

Friend and I went to Stevie Ray's grave the next day (took photos) and stopped
to eat at that cool 50's vintage
restaurant off the highway. I took the camera in rather than leave it in the
hot car, and left it in the booth! Despite
several calls later that day and for a week, no one turned it in. My friend was
so excited because it was the only pic
she'd ever taken with Greg; but neither one of us thought to check for the
camera until we were home. I should have
run a "no questions asked" ad in the local paper. If whomever ended up with my
camera ended up on this list; please
send the photos, "no questions asked".

Oh, also, another time I met Greg after a show, I asked him "hey, do you
remember your show at the
Lakewood theatre in Dallas? Remember the decor?". He laughed and said
something "Yeah, what a trip!".
During the show he looked around and described it as "driving a Corvette through
Egpyt", and he was right!

2 other cool things about this show...

"Good Morning Coffee" was how I discovered Greg's music, on the radio (an NPR
affiliate, natch).
"Say A Little Prayer" and "Little Feet" are also amongst my faves. How often do
you get so many
absolute faves in one live show?

Those 2 shows were incredible (and very small venue, 100?). First come,
first serve for seating! The acoustics are exquisite, as is the decor (a
red velvet curtain backs the tiny stage, a painting of Bob Dylan and, a
Townes Van
Zandt poster on walls, vintage tin ceiling). No Corvettes through Egypt for
the
Cactus Cafe! They also have about 30 vintage posters of various artists on
the wall
outside in the lobby, where you wait in line for your seat. There's a couch
for the lucky
ones, otherwise you have to stand in line (for 2 hours sometimes, but
there's a lot of
comraderie in Cactus lines, doing saves and making friends, etc.). Ticket
prices are
affordable, and no bad music there ever, either.

The 1st nite (I think?) was off the charts. Greg was ON both musically and
lengthy--even risque--banter-wise ("little man in the boat", etc.). Btw,
what song
is that from?; I've actually forgotten and possibly since it was improvised
it doesn't come
up on a quick search of GB lyrics. Help, please.

It'll be a damn shame if these didn't get recorded. I asked Griff (Cactus
manager) about
official recordings. They SB every show, but the recordings belong to the
archives of the
University of Texas. What would be best, of course, is video, too, but I've
forgotten
whether they video (and have never seen a video cam in use at the Cactus).
Cams are
much smaller now, of course.

Jesus & Elvis, Speaking in Tongues, more faves of mine...were stunning.

I wasn't able to find a set list for those 2 shows, and my memory is foggy.
I went with a musician who hadn't ever heard of Greg (can you imagine
hearing him
first ever, live?). Needless to say, he was blown away.

I
want to say that he sang "sail away like a little man in a boat" as
part of Two Little Feet but that doesn't seem right. I do remember him
saying the phrase slowly at a concert one time so that we all could
understand just what the phrase is.

and:

>I went with a musician who hadn't ever heard of Greg (can

>hearing him

>first ever, live?). Needless to say, he was blown away.

Sounds like the first time I saw Greg, 1987, in a little place in Davis, CA. I
was blown away, too. Instant fan!

and:

>Oh, also, another time I met Greg after a show, I asked him
"hey, do you remember your show at the

During the
show, Greg also apologized for not having a suit to go with the theater
decor and said he looked for one but couldn't find one, and promised
that if he ever gets back to tyhe Lakewood, he'd have clothes
appropriate for the venue! It's a lovely art-deco theater, pretty wild,
really beautiful.

Lisa
BTW, I also agree that his performance of One Cool Remove at the Dallas show was
gorgeous!

Not High is the title with lyrics "little man in a boat".

Greg played a great show in the teeny town of Stoughton, WI last night at the
beautiful Stoughton Opera House. I am a big Greg Brown dork, and set out to make
the man a dinner, some slow food, Wisconsin style. :) Mexican Chicken Corn
Casserole, Country Green Beans with bacon, homemade bread, and French Silk pie.
All from scratch, all made while listening to Greg Brown. Took all freaking day,
but it was totally worth it. , thank

Like I said, Stoughton is super small, and at 6:00 I walked into the Opera House
like I owned the place. Sat down and listened to sound check, just for me. (Sat
in the back, totally incognito.) It was awesome!

After Greg finished, I brought him dinner. He was very grateful and kind. I
didn't want to bother him before a show, so I just set down the tray in his
dressing room, thanked him, and skee-daddled.

I wrote him a quick card thanking him for his music, his poetry, putting himself
out there... I very, very humbly at the end of the letter stated that I didn't
know if "Two Little Feet" was in rotation these days, but that if it was and he
felt like playing it, I would be one grateful Mama. I said that if he didn't
play it, I would in no way be disappointed.

I then told him that if my unwed husband of 12 years and I ever decided to get
married, we would dance our "couple" dance to "Hey, Baby, Hey". Thanked him
again, and signed off.

Here is his set list:
(forgive me if I have titles wrong. If I wasn't familiar with the song I wrote
what I assumed the title was.)

Rock Me Sweet and Low
Fat Boy Blues
Hey, Baby, Hey
Spring and All
Tenderhearted Child
If I had Known
You Drive Me Crazy
Dimming of the Day
Two Little Feet
Remember the Sun (Pieta song)
Let The Mystery Be (Iris song)
Red-Winged Blackbird
Like A Dog
Blue Car
Brand New Angel

Encore with The Pines:
Hard Times
Honky Tonk Woman

I was most curious about Tenderhearted Child. Does anyone know where I can get a
recording of this? It was so touching.

He was very funny in between songs, and seemed to be genuinely having fun.

Afterward, I spoke with him briefly where he said he loved my beans. ;)

Any thoughts on Tenderhearted Child would be appreciated.

Thanks, y'all!
Tara

Thanks for this wonderful story and review. You really brought your whole
experience to life for me. How wonderful! your evening. I could only have been
better had Greg asked you to sit down and share that meal with him. But he
played your songs! And he played Dimming of the Day? I don't remember hearing
that he has played that before, I'd love to hear his version.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Wow, Tara. You sure know the way to a man's heart. Slow food!
That Wisconsin style version sounds mighty tasty. Very classy
of you to leave the food and *not* hang around. I'm sure that
Greg enjoyed his time alone with a great meal.

It looks like Greg was in the "cover" mode on this night. I'm
with Jan. I'd love to hear his take on Richard & Linda Thompson's
"Dimming of the Day". It's such a gorgeous song.

Ramcey did an incredible job mastering these two shows for my friend
Chad who did the recording. These are must have discs. The recordings
are soundboard and then played with by our own Ramcey in Nashville

02.26.10 is a single disc show from the Xeriscape/Water Conservation
Conference (fantastic set list)

02.27.10 is a double disc show from the Lobo theatre (small, old movie
theatre with fantastic acoustics)

I will send three packages out nationally and I'm willing to send at
least one package overseas

For a Greg Brown fan this past weekend couldn't really been any better.
Great Friends and a great music. We Drove from Chicago to Milwaukee's
Shank Hall, then Madison for the Stoughton Opera House show and then
Home and out to The Space, up in Evanston. Pretty close dates in
completely difference settings, with beautiful spring weather to buffer
the shows with nice drives. To make it more interesting is was just Greg
and no Bo the whole weekend, although I love Bo, it made Greg maybe have
to work just a bit harder. The Evanston show was a real treat.
I'd love to have recordings of these shows! If anyone is willing to help
me out I'd return the favor some how. I know the Shank Hall show is at
least out there.
