I've heard him do an impression of Garrison telling the story of how they wrote
Slow Food. Lots of nose breathing into the mic.

It took me a long time to find Greg. I first heard him on a single track on a
late night radio programme here in Melbourne Australia in about 1992. We have a
great station here http://www.rrr.org.au/ which plays things you'll never
otherwise hear. I don't recall which track was played but it was enough for me
to take a note of his name. I tried finding him in local record stores but only
one had a listing under his name and that was in the jazz section! Plus it was
expensive to order in those pre internet days. A few years later I heard another
single track and I thought WOW it's that guy again but still no record stores
here could help. Then in about 2002 during the glory days of bootleg CD trading
a friend said she's been offered a show by a guy called Greg Brown, was it worth
getting? Did I know anything about him and would I like a copy? That was it. I
now have about 120 Greg shows plus all his officially released stuff but he's
never visited Australia or likely to although Pieta is due here next month and
we have some fantastic fishing. The closest I got was about 7 years ago while
visiting my niece in New York and Greg was playing upstate but my time was too
short to get to the show.

called "Folk Ways" (I always call it "Folk Waves").

I was working in my barn, it was "Good Morning Coffee" in full. I had to call
the radio station to find out who it was...then to found out a large catalog of
work...

How did you first hear (or hear of) Greg?

Not sure if I responded to your earlier email regarding the Pearl Jam song.
You ought to send the suggestion to Greg, over at his web site.  He might enjoy
considering a new song for his repertoire.  Can't hurt.  It is a great song.

I first heard Greg on A Prairie Home companion also, which I still listen to
religiously, even though Greg hasn't been on in years.  Iris is on
occasionally.  I have heard the story Greg tells about him and Garrison
discussing writing the song together, Slow Food.  It is funny!  they are both
such great story tellers.

Thanks for starting a good discussion topic.  Even pulled our Aussie friend out
of the woodwork with a comment!

I'm pretty sure I first heard Greg (Good morning coffee) on the morning folk
show on WERS in Boston in the mid-80s. But I didn't get hooked until '88 when I
was living out west. One wintry night my roommate dragged home two ( very cute)
women who needed a place to stay. One of them had a tape of In the Dark and that
was it - that's when I climbed aboard the Brown bus!

Good idea, but I'd rather request it in person at a show (LOL). Since I may not
be able to get to Dallas or Houston, I will try his website. Plus I am calling
the manager of the Cactus Cafe (best small venue ever) in Austin to get him to
drag Greg here.

One of the better things about living in Montana in the 70s & 80s was Gus
Chambers on Montana Public Radio. Gus was great about playing the 'commercially
challenged' artists on his show- and then on Sunday you'd get more Greg on
Prairie Home Companion. I wonder if Gus is still doing his thing? Jd

I first saw Greg with Ani Difranco at Carnegie Hall in NYC probably in
the late 90's, I must have missed his opening set, but he came on at the
end of the show and performed "Untouchable Face" with her. I've always
loved that song she was playing it on the first tour I saw her on in
1992. They clearly got along and seemed to really enjoy playing
together. When I went back to work and told a friend I'd seen Greg
Brown with Ani, she was really excited and loaned me "Further in", I was
hooked, I've seen Greg perform in about 5-6 different states from the
east coast to California. Its been about two years since my last show...
I'm definitely overdue. Sometime in the early 2000's I saw Greg in a
dinner theater setting at the Town Crier Cafe in NY state. He played
"Untouchable Face" and followed it up with "Vivid" a song he said Ani
had written for him after he'd brought her a bouquet of wild flowers
when they were performing at a festival together.
Thanks for the topic.
Take care
-Noelle

Dallas...forget what year...

I've told this story before, here...

But anyway...sooooooooo excited with anticipation for the performance...a
theatre (old timey movie theatre)...Lakewood Theatre in Dallas...but it had
life-sized Roman-ish statues of people on the walls...lots and lots of gilded
paint...very art-deco yet somehow modern...and Greg opened with "this is like
driving a Corvette thru Egypt" (LOL)....it really was ultimately surreal.

And he actually did "One Cool Remove"...which btw is still not available on
youtube.

I think that was the show where pre-show, I was behind Greg in the booze line
and it took everything I had to resist talking to him (I try to respect
privacy). My new friend/GB-fan that I travelled with and I talked to him
afterwards...he had a bad cold (but still sung like a bird) and I could smell
the whiskey on his breath. He did photos with us (what a guy!).

The next morning we drove to Stevie Ray Vaughan's grave, took photos. Went to a
mahvahlous 50's diner (Waco?) and I left my frickin' camera on the booth seat.
Gone.

No photos for me/us....oy....but I still have the memories....

Here's another one (fave venue, Cactus Cafe in Austin)...

Drop-dead show...Greg by himself...nobody recorded it (damn!)...he was on such a
roll...very risque and you would not believe the version of the song about
little man in the boat...and he did Jesus & Elvis...it was one of 2 nites in a
row there...totally different performances...cannot find a recording of it!

I waited afterward for everyone to filter out...to get his autograph...I asked
and he set his geetar down against one of the real wood kitchen-type
chairs...you know the ones...

He is so kind and down-home to his fans...

I must stop spamming his mail list (LOL)!

Let's see ... it must have been the winter of 1984, when I was listening
to the WERS morning coffeehouse, pregnant with my second child, and
watching my daughter, then 5, dancing into our bedroom. When I heard the lines
"And in the morning they magic the house," I was hooked . I had heard Greg
before, I'm sure, but that was it for me. By the way, the second child was
my son, but the magic remains.

POSTING - MESSAGE TOPICS

The group is for discussions related to Greg Brown and his artistic
endeavors. It's fine to post messages on Greg's efforts for charitable
causes (such as In Harmony). Occasional messages about his close
associates (such as Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore, Nina Gerber, etc.) are OK.

It is fine to write to the group to let people know about the
availability of commercial products related to Greg (CDs, T-shirts,
etc.).

DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, "BREAKING NEWS,"
ETC. Please do not send "test messages" to the group.

Considerate debate and critical analysis are OK; name-calling or
otherwise attacking other group members is not.

Send messages in plain, simple text. Do not send binary attachments,
nor messages in HTML or "rich text" format. Be kind to your fellow list
members, some of whom have relatively slow dial-up connections!

POSTING - REPLIES

By default, replies to go the original sender. Before sending a
message, check the "To" address to verify that it is going to the
intended recipient(s). Send personal replies and replies only of
interest to one person to the original sender, not to the whole group.

Please use a meaningful subject in messages to the group (not blank or
"Re: Digest Number...").

Quote judiciously. Usually it's best to include a few lines from the
original message so that readers can understand the context of your
replies. Don't quote the whole original message, especially if it's a
digest!

MESSAGES ABOUT "VINES"

Some members of the group like to trade recordings through a structure
called a "vine," in which each person who receives a recording offers
to make copies for others.

If you are offering vine recording(s), your message to GBrown-L *MUST*
have the characters "VINE:" (4 capital letters followed by a colon) in
the subject of the message. This is so people can filter vine-related
messages.

If you are replying to a vine offer, please do so directly to the
person making the offer, not to GBrown-L.

I can remember it clearly. It was the spring of 1984 and I was at a conference
in Iowa City. Some of my colleagues and I decided to go out for pizza and beer
at a place called, I believe, the Sanctuary. There were these two guys playing
tunes that cut through the din of many conversations and the clatter of food
servers. I found myself thinking that the songs sounded very familiar, but they
weren't really. They just resonated with me.

Later I found out that the two guys playing were Greg Brown and Dave Moore.
Since that time I've heard Greg many times across the midwest--even with the

I'm a bit different in how I came into Greg's music. Even back
in the 80's, I was already following a few hundred songwriters.
It took quite a bit to get me totally locked-in to more than a
handful of them, as I was constantly being exposed to more and
more incredible artists, each and every month.

I think that I probably heard Greg on either PHC and/or a local
folk radio show on KANU out of Lawrence, Kansas. I was living in the
boonies on a lake near Manhattan, KS at the time, and only learning
what it felt like to literally feel the land and seasons in your
bones. Keep in mind, I'm a guy born in Key West. There are barely
any real seasons (weather-wise) there, and the "land" is basically
some rocky islands surrounded by ocean. In other words, that feeling
of hills, dirt, trees and creeks were not something I could relate
to, until I had lived in a similar environment for a few years.

Once I did, it felt like I'd always lived there, and it was one of
the main reasons I left Florida and moved to my 5 acres of "brush
and trouble" on the outskirts of Nashville.

Already owning 3 of Greg's early records on vinyl, it wasn't until
I first heard the Further In album that it really hit me. Now, I
could better understand the vibe consistent in many of Greg's words.
Somehow, I had missed buying Poet Game, so purchased that just a
few weeks after not being able to remove Further In from my CD
player. It was like being run over by a truck, except in a good
way. Wow. I was hooked, big-time. Many of his songs got me into
the same groove that some of my favorite blues and jazz songs did.
The themes and words now seemed familiar, honest, perfect.

I traveled from Florida to New England (THANKS FERN!) for 8 days
of Greg shows, having never heard him perform live; and it was
one of the greatest weeks of my life. From tiny clubs in bigger
cities, to snowy Middlebury, Vermont and beyond, each and every
show just a wild ride of improvisation through his songs.

When Greg plays Nashville this week, it will a continuation of
the long journey, which I can only hope goes on for many more
years ahead....

I had the good fortune of going to college at the University of Iowa as a
freshman in 1977. For a couple years before the album 44&66 came out I regularly
heard Greg play at the Sanctuary and also at The Mill, the other great folk
music bar/restaurant in Iowa City. Decades ago I lost track of how many times
I've seen Greg play. He doesn't come to Chicago very often these days--about
once a year but I don't think he came last year--so I don't get to see him live
as often anymore. I feel quite lucky to have been able to follow Greg from the
early days of his career. He has been and continues to be one of the two or
three biggest musical influences in my life. And I really think he is one of the
great poets of the last 30 years.
Glad to see the Dave Moore reference! Love his music too. Wish he'd record
another CD. It's been too long.

Since that time I've heard Greg many times across the midwest--even with the

I first heard of Greg in 1977ish from two sources: Michael Johnson
covered "Pilot Me" and "Rooty Toot Toot for the Moon" on his first
album, and a local (Omaha) bluegrass band covered "Four Wet Pigs" during
their set... I bought an album by Greg as a result, and didn't like
it. I have since changed my mind. :-)

It is so wonderful to hear the stories! There are a lot of you out there and
even though we rarely "hear" you online, it is comforting knowing all of you are
still following the vine.

I, comparatively speaking, am a "tween," but so was I when I bought my first
Dylan album, (Blonde on Blonde") and I still follow Bobbie today.

When I first heard Greg's track,"Milk of the Moon," I froze as I listened and I
did not try to wipe the tears away. He gets that reaction a lot of times from
me. I will be following Greg and Dylan until I no longer can, and I hope that's
a long way off...

Peace out!

Though I rarely post on here, I do follow it faithfully. I first heard Greg
with my friend, Heidi, in the early 80's at the Coffeehouse Extempore, a
little upstairs venue in Minneapolis. He was playing with Dave Moore. I
also heard him on the Prairie Home Companion Show. Started buying his
records, tapes and CDs and have every one of them. He's my all-time
favorite, while Bobbie is my husband's. We have a good time entertaining
each other. I, too, see him as a great poet of our time. I see him
whenever he is in Minneapolis or surrounding area - he'll be here at the
Cedar Cultural Center in April. Last summer by chance I heard he was doing
an outdoor concert in St. Paul. It was free, open and beautiful. I think
it was one of his best.

A favorite memory is walking out of the Electric Fetus a few years ago with
my new The Evening Call cd, putting it into my car cd player and hearing the
first few chords of Joy Tears On My Face. Pure joy!

It has been fun following this thread.  Seems like a lot of us have been
following Greg since the 80's.  Prairie Home Companion was a boon for him,
giving him a wider audience.  I suppose I'd have heard of him eventually but
that was my first place.  44 and 66 was my first record by him I bought.  Now I
have the CD replacement.

I admit that when I first listened to Evening Call I wasn't so sure how much I
liked it but over the next couple of listening months it slowly moved up to be
one of my most favorite albums and Joy Tears is one of my favorite songs.  So is
Milk of the Moon and Hey Baby Hey and Rexroth's Daughter and Lull It By and
Spring Wind and Two Little Feet and Cold Dark Wet and Gallery and..............

I have never posted a message here so I quess it is about time.  I was back
in Minnesota where I grew up visiting my Mother. The year was 2002 I think.   I
was reading an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune about this guy from Iowa,
a folk singer.  There was a picture of Greg sitting in a field wearing a straw
hat and a shirt with no sleves if my memory serves me right.  The article was
quite inspiring so I had to learn more about this man Greg Brown.  When I got
back to Texas I started to search for a cd of his.  I was at the mall one night
and all I could find was this tribute cd Going Driftless An Artist's Tribute to
Greg Brown.  I was excited even though I still hadn't found a GB cd.  When I got
to my car I fumbled with the cd trying to get it opened.  I drove around that
night listening to all those female singers singing all these beautiful songs.
I just played it over and over.  About a week later I found Milk of the
Moon and was driving by myself from Dallas to Austin, it was raining and I
found myself in such a peaceful state listening to Greg's voice, the words, the
music.  Everything around me turned into a state of slow motion.  I was so
moved.  I started buying more cd's wherever I could find them,  I started
ordering from Red House.  After aquiring One Night and listening to Spring Wind
( my second cd ) my appreciation of Gregs music just continues to grow.  I have
gotten to see Greg play a couple of times in person but that is a story for
another time.  I might add that I love reading all the posts on here and thank
you all.

So, I think the first time I heard Greg Brown was in 1994 when four of his discs
were in rotation at the coffee shop/restaurant I was working in. They got lost
in the cacophony and I really don't remember them at all. I remember the cases
but not the music. Later, I heard an NPR story that had Greg playing some
tracks from "Over & Under" live. Good enough for me to buy "Slant 6 Mind".
Again, I liked some of the songs but to this day have a hard time with some of
the others. I still hadn't had my "Ah Ha" moment.
That came when moving my parents from Albuquerque to Montrose, CO. I had "Slant
6 Mind" in the CD player of the truck as I left Silverton and headed into the
mountains. As I topped out on Red Mountain Pass "Spring & All" came on. That
song, on repeat, took me the rest of the way into Ouray. I never play a song
over and over and over and over again but that one got me. Never been the same
since. I still can capture that same feeling, almost taste the way the trees
smelled through the open driver's window, if I relax and listen to that song.
"Vivid" got me from Ouray to Ridgeway through the valley as dusk rolled in and
the orchards came up in the valley. Simply Epic in all the right ways.
From there, it was all over. I have bought all the cd's I can (even the yucky
one), seen him nearly a dozen times, traded lots of recordings (always slowly
though), raised two daughters with a healthy appreciation and love for his music
(one sat front row to watch him at the conference we hosted and invited Greg to
play at two years ago here in ABQ) and almost daily wish he'd come back to NM...
I work in a coffee house again at night and I keep trying Greg out on the
college students. I turn the volume up louder and hope that someone else gets
hooked. Sometimes, he'll be on and I'll see someone lean back away from their
laptop, close their eyes and sink into their chair or the couch. I'd like to
think that someone just got sucked in by Greg's baritone. Who knows...

OK, I'm a rare poster. In 1992 I bought "Legacy II: A Collection of
Singer/Songwriters" and I was struck by Greg's "Who Woulda Thunk It". I
immediately bought "In the Dark With You". I have many favorite songs of Greg's
on different CD's, but that CD continues to be my favorite through and through.
If I couldn't sleep at night, I'd go down and put that CD on and it would put me
in a very relaxed state and eventually put me to sleep. I agree with Richard
about "Vivid" and "Spring and All". Those are still favorite songs of mine. I
recorded "Small Dark Movie" on my CD in 2008 ("The Preacher and the Teacher")
and Greg recently played it a show I was at and gave me a little shout out - a
real high for me. I do like his sentimental songs. It's a bit like I love
early Tom Waits, before his voice had deteriorated (I still like Tom's songs and
there is still sentimentality in them, but it's harder to connect to the
feelings with his voice). I perform "Brand New '64 Dodge", "Small Dark Movie",
"Vivid", "Lord, I Have Made You a Place in My Heart", and "Say a Little Prayer".
The "Canned Good's" song is a particular favorite. I grew up with 4 brothers
and a sister in the Midwest, including 4 years in Iowa. That song is very
evocative for my whole family. I'm very happy I bought that CD in 1992.

I live in Australia and have to go to Vermont for a conference late this month.
When I arranged this a couple of months ago I checked Greg's tour schedule and
was very disappointed to find out that I would miss concerts in this area by a
few weeks. The other morning I had an intuition to check again and was stunned
to find out his Pawling concert had been rescheduled to the night after I
arrived in NY.

I have contacted the venue, and after explaining this was a once in a lifetime
opportunity for me, they have kindly offered to squeeze me in even though they
were fully booked. I am so grateful and it is not often I am this excited about
something. Never did think I would get to see Greg live - increadible turn of
sychronistic events.
